Dearchurch family,Dear Church Family,

It is difficult to believe that we are beginning 2010. The decade is coming to a close and there is much for which to celebrate! Even in the midst of the worst recession this country has seen in decades, faithful people continue to be blessed by a faithful God! Our trust here at First Presbyte-rian continues to be placed in Him and He is doing a wonderful work in our midst!

When I was on staff at First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, Tennessee, I remem-ber The Rev. Todd Jones offering to the congregation a list of “Ten Biblical Ideas to Improve Your Life.” The beginning of the year is always an opportunity to assess your life and walk with God. For your contemplation as we find ourselves in 2010, let me offer to you the principles shared by Rev. Jones:

1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1) Build your life on a foundation that will hold, which can only be upon the sovereignty of a great God. Fear God alone, and you will banish the hold all smaller fears have upon your life!

2. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). We can find abiding peace and contentment when we make “the joy of the Lord our strength.” Learning to delight in the Lord shapes our desires in ways that bring maturity and wisdom.

3. Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil desires (Psalm 37:7). Compar-ison to others is the source of all unhappiness. Let your trust in the providence of God deepen your soul. You have more control over yourself than over others!

4. Those with good sense are slow to anger, and it is their glory to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Nothing stretches your heart like forgiving an offense, and being slow to anger is God’s way with us.

5. A person’s pride will bring humiliation, but one who is lowly in spirit will ob-tain honor (Proverbs 29:23). Jesus said, “For I am meek and lowly of heart, and you will find rest unto your soul.” Do you suppose that Jesus was on to some-thing?

6. Discipline your children, and they will give you rest; they will give delight to your heart (Proverbs 29:17). Trust me when I say that with your kids, less will end up being more. Be generous with your time, but be very judicious with ev-erything else. The goal is to make your children strong and self-disciplined. You are not entrusted your children to please them and to indulge their appetites.

6

Page 7: January Here@First

7

7. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it (Proverbs 3:27). We bless those God places in our lives when we affirm their gifts and ap-preciate their accomplishments. William James was speaking the truth when he said, “The deepest craving in the human soul is the craving to be appreciated.” Be fair and generous of spirit with people.

8. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). If Jesus’ life and death teach us anything, they teach us that the power of love is stronger than every form of loveless power. Believe in the power of the Gospel more than in any other power in all the world!

9. The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (II Corinthi-ans 9:6,7). It really is more blessed to give than to receive!

10. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). What we need more than we need anything else in 2010 is Jesus! And what God wants to give you in 2010 is what God wants to give you for all eternity, and that is Jesus.

You may choose different biblical principles for 2010. If these choices have challenged you to do such thinking, I rejoice! As Rev. Jones said, we serve a God of abundant wisdom and love, which makes us rich beyond our deserving. May God bless you with every good and perfect gift in 2010!

Blessings in His service,

Pastor Jack

faMIly lIfe news

Happy neW year! The New Year is a great time to evaluate our priorities in life. As parents we have a tremendous challenge to choose wisely the way we use our time and how we keep our families in balance. It’s easy to let work, school and sports commitments take priority in our lives and forget about nurturing our own walk with Jesus and our children’s spiritual development. We want to help your family grow closer to God and to one anoth-er. One opportunity We offer is RE3 on Wednesday nights here at FPC. We will begin again on Wednesday, January 13 with dinner in the gym at 5:15pm and classes beginning at 6:15pm. There is something for every member of your family. There is a wonderful program for our kids to grow in their faith while having a lot of fun, as well as mid-High and Senior-high youth group and classes for adults, too.

Parents of school-aged children and teenagers won’t want to miss this quarter’s class, “Running the Rapids: Guiding Teen-agers Through the Turbulent Waters of Adolescence”. This video- based class features internationally known Christian psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman. He is both funny and practical making him a favorite speaker and author on marriage and parenting. Don’t count this class out if you aren’t quite to the teen years, it is best to be prepared for the stage ahead of you. The class will be held in the Parlor and will be facilitated by Tim and Liberty Andis. Cost is $7.50 for a participant workbook.

learnIng WHat It MeanS to be generouSSTUDENT OFFERINGFor the last year we have been supporting four missionaries in Cambodia with our offering that we take at Sunday school. The $200 a month that we send to these young people provides them with enough money to eat, have a place to live and support their families. With these basic needs met they are freed up to work full time in ministry.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOLDIER SUPPORTFor Christmas this year we decided to have the middle school students send some very practical presents to soldiers in Afghanistan. We collected basic needs items so that we could mail them to troops who won’t get to be home for Christmas. Hopefully our gifts and cards will let them know they are loved during this time away from home.

HIGH SCHOOL ADOPT A FAMILYOur high school group was able to provide Christmas presents for a family of five from our community. We were able to get warm

clothes for the three young boys, a few household items for the parents and some toys for all of them. We are very aware of how much we have been blessed and count it an honor to bless others.

November 31, 2009

the art of everyday thanksgiving

Hey Friends!

Two weekends ago, we invited all of our staff over to our house for a night of fellowship and games and it was so much fun and chaos. There were more than 30 people at our cozy rental home, but the more, the merrier! One amazing thing that happened this week was our landlord finally put in concrete for our front yard, so that we could easily access through it without getting stuck in the mud and making a mess.

Recently, Caroline had the privilege of hosting Roslyn Jackson at our home, who is working with our organization in the region. It was such an amazing time for Caroline to be able to connect with someone that has been living in Asia for about 30 years. What an encouragement it was to Caroline, to be able to glean a lot of wisdom from Roslyn’s life experiences. Not only was Caroline hosting Roslyn, but there is a Perth DTS outreach team that arrived, so Caroline has been helping this team get settled into life here and connecting them with different ministries for their month here. On the 13th of November, she taught the book of Colossians in the School of Biblical Studies and it went very well!

Garth just arrived back from his time in Myanmar teaching in the DTS there with one of our Cambodian staff Samphas. The 2 of them

also had the opportunity to travel with one of our International Leaders in YWAM, David Hamilton, into Laos and Thailand and this was a great time of learning and gleaning from 33 years of experience. It was also an amazing time to connect with other leaders in the region to see how we can continue to influence this area of the world for Jesus.

This week we headed down to Phnom Penh for a 3-day staff conference for all YWAMers in Cambodia, with David Hamilton as our speaker. Our time together was very unifying, fruitful as well as very challenging for what God has for the future of the ministry here in Cambodia and the region of raising up and releasing the Khmer.

Prayer Points:

1) For us to be able to grow in our love for Jesus, each other and the Khmer people.

2) For us to be able to bring application in our lives to the challenges that we received in the staff conference last week.

3) God to continue to raise up Khmer as leaders and to release them into their callings.

With Thankful Hearts to the King of Kings,

Garth and Caroline
