PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

THE SPARK JANUARY 2019
Dear Rotarians,
The month of January like all other months has been a very
busy month for our Club. A number of activities were
undertaken during this month a few of those I would like to
mention here.
The 3170 District Conference was held in first week of
January. Many of our members attended the conference
held at Sangli. Our PP Kishor Dhume won a number of awards at the Conference for his
outstanding performance during his year, Congratulations to him and his team.
For the first time our Club held the Legends Cricket tournament amongst the members. It
was an unique plan wherein the players were auctioned for the two team owners,
President's XI and Sayi's XI. It was a fun filled Sunday, most of the seniors all above
50years participated. After a keenly fought game, a scrumptious lunch was laid out for the
hungry and tired players, to gorge on.
A four day MHM training programme was organised by our Club at the Education
Department hall, for 75 teachers of schools to which these 75 number MHM machines
acquired under the Global Grant project will be donated and installed. Lunch and snacks
for the teachers during the training was provided for by the Club. The programme was a
Huge Success.
On the 30th of January which incidently came on a Wednesday, the Clubs Chartered Day
Celebrations were held at Ferns Kadamba in the evening. I was happy to see almost all the
Past Presidents along with other members and family, attending the celebrations, just a
few could not due to personal issues. We had a great enjoyable evening. The food and the
ambience added to the festivities.
During the month we had two members inducted into the Rotary fold. I expect and hope to
see all our new entrants along with our existing members take an active part in the club
activities and make our Club vibrant as never before.
Thank you and God bless all.
Yours in Rotary
for ROTARY CLUB OF PANAJI

Dear Readers,January heralds the New Year with new enthusiasm, new vigour and new resolutions. It is also a month to recover from the overdoings of December. Dr. Dixit was just the shot we needed, when we heard him at the Conference. Many have taken to him seriously and have already taken off some inches from around the waist. The Conference is one outing that we look forward to eagerly. This time the arrangements were great and the chill in the Sangli air helped us raise our “spirits”. Add to that the fact that we came away with a lot of awards, including Best Large Club and Best Secretary. Point to note that the secretary's performance was from during the days when his diet was anything but Boiled vegetables and lukewarm water.
thJanuary is also the Vocational Service month and 30 January our Charter Day. A month where we get through our Vocational awards and Factory visits and the like. Our three awardees this year were very deserving candidates. Sheikh Jahid or Bhaiyajee as we call him, is the bhelpuri vendor whom I have been going to right from my school days. At the end of the school day, it used to be a walk across the road for a 50 paise plate of Sev puri. Today, 43 years thence, when cravings for something chatpata start, subject to Dr. Dixit's 50 min rule, my destination is still cart no 20 at Miramar. Radha Naik is another familiar face outside the Maruti temple at Miramar on Saturdays and the Ganesh Temple at Campal on Tuesdays. On both occasions her mid morning and afternoon tea is at our place.
Kudos to the gentlemen who way back in 1962, accepted the idea of Service above Self and agreed to the proposal from the Rotary Club of Belgaum, to bring the Rotary movement to Goa. Today, 56 years later, The Rotary Club of Panaji is still going as strong as ever.
This month I have tried to recreate the old Black and White letterpress printing type of SPARK. Only the cover that is. Just out of a sense of Nostalgia.
Happy Reading.

Vocational service can be hard to define, but it is easy to
describe: It is simply the point where our Rotary lives and
our professional lives intersect. When we put our Rotary
ideals to work through our work, that is vocational service.
When I returned to the Bahamas after many years working
in health care administration abroad, I realized that my
country badly needed a modern health care facility. The
resources we had at the time were out of date and
inadequate, and people who were unable to travel abroad
for care often did not receive the care they needed. Without
the experience I had gained in the United States, I could
have done nothing to change the status quo. But since I did
have that experience, I was in a unique position to have an
impact. I knew I could turn my professional path to good and
make a career out of improving Bahamian health care.
As Rotary became part of my journey, I discovered that the
words of Paul Harris that became the basis of Rotary — that
shared effort knows no limitations — were also true for my
vocation. I could not bring modern health care to the
Bahamas alone. But through partnership, both with the
doctors who eventually became my partners in Doctors
Hospital and with all the dedicated staff members who
worked in the hospital over the years, we could change
everything. My goal became a shared goal — and then it
became reality.
R.I. President's Message January 2019
Rotary emphasizes the dignity of every vocation and the
worth of every calling. Remember that the four founding
members included no doctors or peacemakers — just an
attorney, a mining engineer, a coal dealer, and a printer.
From the beginning, the diversity of those vocations gave
Rotary a special strength. And that diversity is reflected in
our classification system, which aims to ensure that each
club represents the full range of businesses and
professions that serve each community.
Paul Harris put it this way: "Each Rotarian is the connecting
link between the idealism of Rotary and his trade or
profession." It was true when he said it and should be
equally true now. We only spend an hour or two a week at
our Rotary meetings, but most of us spend most of our
waking time at work. Through Rotary, those hours are also
an opportunity for service: a chance to Be the Inspiration to
those we work with, those who work for us, and the
communities we serve.

Dinesh Gajanan Kamat is amongst the first few persons
that I connected to as a child when we stepped into Panaji
from our village Sanguem in 1970. In Rotary his war cry
“EEEYEEE” is synonymous with him. A soft-spoken and
jovial man endearing to all in Rotary and more specifically
on the Cricket field. This KAKA of the team has always
been efficient and effective at all responsibilities entrusted
to him in the Club. My conversation with DGK opened up a
can of pleasant old memories of our old days at St Inez.
Dinesh let us hear your story from the very beginning.th
I was born to Shalini and Gajanan Vithal Kamat on the 8
July 1964 at Dr Kerkar's Hospital Margao. My Father who
had lost his mother at a very young age was brought up by
his two elder brothers Anant (Baba) and Upendra (Kaka)
and their wives. They treated Baba as their own son. Kaka
expressed his desire that my birth should be at his place
and requested that he be given the privilege to name the
child born. He named me Dineshchandra. This incident
was recounted by my aunt Bayee to my wife Deepa when
they first met.
We had a very modest upbringing. My father had a small
Radio repair shop at Fontainhas Panaji. Our Resources
were very scarce in those days and my father was helped in
many ways , be it guidance or moral support by his brothers
Anant and Upendra.
When did your family come to Panaji?
Baba came to Panaji from Assagao in the 1940's.When he
married, he needed a place to stay. Caculo had built a
Chawl for his employees at the place where now exists the
Caculo Mall, my uncle put in a word with Mr. Caculo to
accommodate him though he was not their employee. We
were the first to occupy a house of the chawl. The others to
follow were the Tukaram Kamat family, Dattabab Zingde
Family, Motibab Parrikar Family and Rameshbau Agshikar
family.
Dinesh can you share some experiences of the Caculo
Chawl days.
Viresh you are also a party to our growing up days because
your family too shifted in the adjoining 7 –B Govt. quarters
in 1970. It was one big family and unlike today we would and
could walk through each other's houses without any
hesitations. The kids were all around the same age and the
bonhomie was unprecedented. This article would not be
enough to pen down all the experiences of the Chawl days.
In one sentence if I can put it, we had less resources but
ample happiness, in short we were high on our Happiness
Index. Pulling down a ripened mango with precise aim
(teer) was a skill that we as youngsters mastered, off
course there were some amongst us who were the better
“teeradors”. Sharing the mango with everyone was
another celebration. Our hockey sticks came from fire wood
sticks which resembled the shape of a Hockey stick but we
still enjoyed the sport. I can go on and on. Well we will
forever cherish the memories of those days.
Dinesh how can I forget those wonderful growing up
days
Viresh as you were a part of it, I am sure you will subscribe
to what I say. Our childhood was the best that anyone could
expect. Excellent friends of around the same age and a few
seniors who would be our guides. A big field in the front

where now exists the Fire Brigade Dept. was our play
ground. Having a huge playfield across the road is any
Childs dream. We learnt to play the different sports here.
Festivals were celebrated with great camaraderie amongst
the neighbours. The area was called TAD MAD or the
Devchar Tad Mad . Presently a small Shiva shrine which
is the land mark of the locality exists on the banyan tree.
Our elders started the TAD MAD Sanskrutic Mandal, a
cultural association. Come Narkasur and the colony would
be a buzz not only with the Narkasur effigy but also with the
practise sessions (Yesai's) of the cultural programmes that
we had on the Diwali eve or Narkasur nite. The Colony's
“Narkasur Nite” was looked forward to by several around
the St-Inez Area. Many a tournament were organised at the
Tad Mad grounds like the Marieta Cup Football for the
Football Clubs by the Nehru Yuvak Kendra, and cricket
tournaments like TheTamba Trophy and the Telang Trophy
organised by the Panaji Youth Club. Tad Mad Sports Club
had strong teams.
You have been a state level Cricket Player, Tell us a little
about this interest.
Yes , but again thanks to our senior neighbours and here I
have to make a mention of Dr Pradip Nagarshekar and the
Panjim Youth Club who taught us to hold the cricket bat,
groomed and trained us . I would also regularly take the
SAG Cricket coaching at Campal under coaches Mr
Sharma, and later Mr Chedde.
I have represented the GOA under 19 team on three
occasions besides excelling for our clubs and colleges
including being a captain of Goa Engineering College but
preferred to pursue a career in Engineering rather than
Cricket and mind you during those days the options for
Cricket were also few and Goa was not even a Ranji Playing
State.
Where was your education?
I started my schooling at the Mustifund School near the
Mahalaxmi Temple where my elder brother Deepak also st
studied. I shifted to Don Bosco from the 1 std in 1971. Our
Rotarians Gaurish Dhond and Tata Thakur were colleagues
of my brother Deepak at the Don Bosco High School. In Don
Bosco my classmates throughout included the now Justice
of High Court Mahesh Sonak, Arch. Armenio Rebeiro,
Dinesh Salgaonkar (Salu), Rajiv Hubli to name a few. In
fact, we had three students with the name “Dinesh” in our
class and hence we were called out by our respective
father's name. Some of my colleagues still call me Gajanan
(laughs). Due to our huge friend circle, relatives and the
welcoming nature of my mother, my house often became
the meeting point. My mother would always be the good
hostess to all who stepped in our home. This often made me
to shift to my cousin Sureshbhayee's house for the peace of
mind required for my studies. Sureshbhaiyee's guidance
and moral support especially when I started my business is
something that I am eternally grateful to. My other cousin
Udaybhayee stood guarantor to me at the bank and
Sanjivbhai was my other pillar of strength when I started my
business along with my immediate family.
Post SSC I pursued the Science Stream in the Dhempe
College of Arts and Science, Miramar. As a child I was
always fascinated with machines, I would make small
machines with motors and battery cells and other available
accessories. I thought I had the right aptitude to pursue the
Engineering line and hence joined the Mechanical Branch
at the Goa Engineering College. By any standards we were
not economically sound, but the value of education was
imbibed in us not only by our parents but also by our
neighbours. The educated background of our neighbours
had a huge impact on us about the importance of
professional degrees. Whether it was the Professors of
Medical College or Pharmacy college who stayed around
us in the Government Quarters or the well-educated Zingde
family next door, they all contributed to us developing a
mindset for professional education. This was another
advantage of living in the Chawl. My elder brothers
Rajkumar and Deepak were also Engineers. To educate
three Engineers was a difficult task for my father with his
little earnings. We sustained on scholarships which was a
sum of Rs 600/- per year, an amount just enough to take
care of the college fees.A lunch plate would be Rs 1.75 in
the college canteen, Rs 2 in the adjoining hut,the famous
Zopdi of Farmagudi, Rs 2.25 at the Barves Khanaval and

Rs 3.00 at Hotel Sanman.
My daily allowance from my father would be Rs 10, from
which a couple of Rupees would be saved for my Drawing
sheets. Luxuries were a distant reality but we understood
the difficulties of our parents.Despite all the problems they
faced Ayee and Baba raised us up with a positive attitude.
We were always greeted with a smiling face by our parents.
Things improved when both my brothers started earning
and the small luxuries that they missed as students were
realised through me by them. My father always preferred
his bicycle even when his children could later afford to give
him a car. He lived his life with his head held high and parted
to us his best values. He expired two years ago at the age of
91 and couldn't have asked for more.
Dinesh How did you start your Career post your
graduation?
Well, after my graduation I started Aluminium Fabrication
through ALPRO Industries in1986 at Betim Verem, then
started an anodising plant in 1989 at Bicholim and finally the
powder coating plant in 1991. I also tried my hand at other
businesses such as TEFLON coating, but unfortunately the
project could not move forward in spite of getting the
product approvals from the principles PHILIPS. I hired a
sick Teflon unit in Kolhapur, worked on it for days and got
the right product approved from PHILIPS, unfortunately the
incentive of “tax holiday” attracted the company to
Himachal Pradesh and I had no other choice but to
abandon the Project. I have tried my hand at other ventures
also. I believe that one should always try to do new things, it
is not necessary that he will succeed all the time . The
entrepreneur within you should not be allowed to die. Small
failures could show you the path of big success. My elder
brother Rajkumar joined me in business 1992 after quitting
his job in ACGL. He later diversified into his own business.
In 2014 I realised that there are 3 industries which are cash
rich, Mining, Construction and the Food Industry. Three
Rotarians from our Club Sandeep Prabhu, Parai Dubashi stand me joined hands to form the SDP Foods and our 1
Venture was SUBWAY stores at Mall de Goa. Recently we
have started a cake and savoury shop “7th Heaven” and
coming soon is “Curry Pao”. We are hopeful that the
company will grow.
Dinesh Tell us a little more about your family
I have two brothers Rajkumar and Deepak and a sister
Rupa.I married Deepa Kolwalkar in 1993, Deepa is a MA in
History from the Goa University, she is also Director in
ALPRO Metal Pvt. Ltd and my pillar of strength. She has
stood by me through thick and thin and I will forever be
grateful to her. We have a daughter Ira who is schooling in
Dr K.B Hedgewar High School, Cujira. She did her Primary
education at the Sunshine World-Wide School, Old Goa
which is run by our own Rotarian Deepak Khaitan. In 1993
Immediately after marriage we stayed at Sidharth
Apartments at Tonca, then shifted to the Waglo Building

near Green Acres, Tonca before finally shifting to our house
at Bainguinim in 1999.
How did you connect with Rotary?
In 1993 RC Ponda sponsored RC Bicholim and I was the
charter member of RC Bicholim. Due to my commitments I
was unable to regularly attend the meetings, during those
days RC Bicholim and RCPanaji played a few cricket
matches within themselves or at district level sports. Dilip
Ghanekar Proposed my Transfer from Bicholim to Panaji
and that's how I was inducted in RC Panaji during the
President ship of Dilip Ghanekar. Here too I was initially
irregular until in 2002 when Dr Prasad Netravalkar invited
me for a BOD hosted by him. This and the cricket matches
and the fellowship before and (more after meeting, then at
Hotel Campal) is when my bonding towards members
started. I slowly got involved in the intricacies of the club
THE SPARK JANUARY 2019
functioning and started enjoying it. Unless a member bonds
with his fellow members he will never be able to enjoy
Rotary in the real sense. It is also the duty of the senior
members to make a new member feel comfortable in the
Rotary Family. I have held several positions in the club like
Director of Youth service during Sandesh's Presidentship
year and other Directors and Jt. Secretary until I became
the President in 2010-11. I have done several projects
besides the matching grants project which culminated
during Subhash Sajane's year, whereby laptops, and LCD
Projectors were distributed to 25 schools. I am happy to be
part of this family and contribute in whatever way I can to the
society
Dinesh it was nice talking to you besides bringing out very
old childhood memories, Thank you and all the best for your
life ahead.
