Epiphany Reflection

Today's Gospel tells of the visit of the magi, who follow a star to find the newborn king of the Jews. These men stop in Jerusalem seeking direction from King Herod and his scribes and high priests. Herod is "greatly trou-bled, and all Jerusalem with him," at the news of the birth of the prophesied king of the Jews. But Herod's reaction is not one of joy and amazement to realize that the ancient prophecies of his people are being fulfilled in his time. Instead, he immediately begins scheming to find and destroy this child who he sees as a threat to his power.

It is said that the whole city is troubled at this news. Does the city represent worldly power and its opposition to the radical message of Christianity? The citizens, even the chief priests and the scribes are perhaps too comfortable in their roles as leaders to be open to the message of the prophets, that one day, a little child will lead them. Do they somehow sense that such a King will ultimately ask them to discard earthly honor, pow-er, and wealth? They cling to the power structures that they are familiar with, unable or unwilling to recognize God's will in the events that are about to unfold.

The magi, "having been warned in a dream not to re-turn to Herod," protect the little king they have come to worship, and "depart for their country by another way." Joseph will also heed the voice of God whispered in the night, fleeing to safety with Mary and Jesus. Sadly, Herod's rage will soon be vented by the murder of the holy innocents.

In cities and nations of the world today, Herod's attack on the child - God's own image - is starkly played out in the battle between pro-life and pro-abortion forces. Our challenge is to listen to the small, still voice of God in the night: rise up, protect the child! Let us say "yes" to life as Mary did, and protect the lives of the innocent as Joseph and the wise men did, even if it means facing the wrath of "kings" who are set on their destruction.

The Coming Home Program offers an opportunity for people who have been away from the Church to explore a return to full participation in the Catholic Church. The program includes information on current practices and beliefs and is designed to answer participants’ question in an informal setting and provide tools for reflection on individual spirituality and life experience. Sessions begin with an information night on January 30 at Christ the King Church. For more information, contact Kay: [email protected] or 946-1154 x 222, or visit www.ckparish.org.

Mental Health Ministry: On Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2:00 p.m., the Mental Health Ministry will present "Welcomed and Valued - Supporting People with Mental Illness in Parish Life" in the parish youth center lower level conference room. This will be an interactive ses-sion that includes a video presentation by the National Catholic Partnership on Disability, group discussion, and next steps. The session will last approximately 90 minutes and refreshments will be provided. As space is somewhat limited, we encourage you to reserve seating by calling Sara Hall at (509) 392-9153 or Thom Hall at (509) 392-9154. More detail will be provided through-out the month of January via the weekly bulletin.

A quick update on the Teepa Snow - Caregiver Demen-tia Classes: we are still in the process of getting all of the "T's crossed & I's dotted. We understand the im-portance of these classes and will be scheduling them as soon as possible.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Sunday, January 8, in the CK School Gym. Registration is from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m.; free-throw shooting begins at 2:30. All boys and girls aged 9 to 14 as of 1/1/17 are invited to participate. Winners move on to the District Championship. No cost to participate. Contact Lance Amato at 531-1223 for more information.

Epiphany Proclamation

On Epiphany, there is an ancient custom of announcing the dates of movable feasts for the coming year: Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year's culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the Thirteenth day of April and the evening of the Fifteenth day of April, Easter Sunday being on the Sixteenth day of April. Each Easter -- as on each Sunday -- the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the First day of March. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on Thursday, the Twenty-fifth day of May. Pentecost, joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the Fourth day of June. And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the Third day of December. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

Carmelite Corner

Praying portions of the Divine Office: (7 of 9)

Give thanks to God the Father as you ponder Psalter and Gospel antiphons to celebrate the Epiphany of Christ.

Seeing the star, the wise men said: This must signi-fy the birth of some great king. Let us search for him and lay our treasures at his feet: gold, frankin-cense and myrrh.

He comes in splendor, the King who is our peace; he is supreme over all the kings of the earth.

A light has shone through the darkness for the up-right of heart; the Lord is gracious, merciful and just.

Helpless, he lay in a manger; glorious, he shone in the heavens. Humbled, he lived among men; eter-nal, he dwelt with the Father.

Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia.

Three mysteries mark this holy day: today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ wills to be baptized by John in the river Jor-dan to bring us salvation.

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

To become more open spiritually, we must grow closer to Christ. In the Exercises, we are called in prayer to peel away the outer covering, remove the decorative “baggage” that shields our soul, and explore our deeper selves. Prayer brings us ever deeper, to the place where God resides within us, and in so doing, open ourselves to the goodness of God.

For those who are participating in the Spiritual Exercises this year, and alums, our next group meeting will be Saturday, January 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The theme will be the Two Standards. To learn more about SEEL find us on Facebook at SEELTC or visit http://spiritual-exercises.com.

Our sessions meet weekly on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room. For more information, contact Deacon Ross

Ronish at 371-0994.

Message for the 50th World Day of Peace Pope Francis

On this occasion, I would like to reflect on nonviolence as a style of politics for peace. I ask God to help all of us to cultivate nonviolence in our most personal thoughts and values. May charity and nonviolence gov-ern how we treat each other as individuals, within socie-ty and in international life. When victims of violence are able to resist the temptation to retaliate, they become the most credible promoters of nonviolent peacemaking. In the most local and ordinary situations and in the in-ternational order, may nonviolence become the hall-mark of our decisions, our relationships and our actions, and indeed of political life in all its forms.

Our Holy Father’s message will be presented in portions over the next 17 weeks.
