peace in the coming year!

SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION January 7, 2018

Epiphany of the Lord “..they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and

offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh...” - Matthew 2:11 Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit...first, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him; then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share! Holy Spirit, grace me with time in the circumstances of life to listen for God and hear His Will for me.

VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE Praying for vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life is both a responsibility and privilege of the laity. We at Saint Ann Church have begun a beautiful ministry of prayer for vocations using the Vocation Prayer Chalice. Each Sunday at the end of a Mass, a family or individual will be presented the Vocation Prayer Chalice, a candle, and a booklet with prayers for each day of the week. In taking the Prayer Chalice, they commit themselves to pray each day during that week on behalf of our parish for vocations. There is no doubt that the Holy Spirit is calling forth men and women (boys and girls) from this very parish community to these courageous and beautiful roles of service in the Church. May our prayers help inspire them to be attentive to the movement of the Holy Spirit within them and to step forward in faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Spirit leads them! Consider being part of this wonderful opportunity of prayer... Please pray on it! If you would like to receive the Vocation Prayer Chalice into your home and pray for vocations, please contact the parish office at 201-659-1114 or email [email protected] and have your name placed on the schedule. There is power in prayer.

PRAYER for VOCATIONS Loving God,

Your Son, Jesus, has shown us that an open heart finds the way.

Help me to find my way in this world. Keep my heart open to following

Jesus' way of serving others in love. Give me the courage to accept the guidance

You offer me through my family, my friends and my parish community.

Through the Holy Spirit, You call me to a particular way of life.

If it is the way of a Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon,

then help me to walk it in joyful service to Your people.

With You, my God, I know I can find my way. Amen.

JOIN US in DAILY PRAYER for VOCATIONS: Please pray one OUR FATHER, one HAIL MARY, one GLORY BE for an increase in vocations for the

Capuchin Franciscan Friars Province of the Stigmata of Saint Francis and to the Archdiocese of Newark. For more info, please visit www.capuchinfriars.org or www.rcan.org/offices-and-ministries/vocations.

ACCELERATED CONFIRMATION CLASSES for ADULTS The Accelerated Adult Confirmation Classes are for adults who are baptized Catholic, received First Communion, catechized and are now seeking to complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Confirmation, brings the process of Christian Initiation to completion. The process is one of a small-group, adult learning experience. The focus of the program is to connect the practice of our Catholic faith to our experiences in our everyday lives. Participants will look at how their image of God affects the way in which they are in relation to Him. The resources are varied and include the US Catholic Catechism for Adults, ‘Catholicism Video Series Program’ and The New American Bible, Revised Edition. For many who participate in this program, it is an opportunity to see for the first time the faith of the Church with an adult understanding.

The class meets for 10 continuous Tuesdays, January 16th thru March 20th, 7pm – 9pm

Padre Pio Chapel, 619 Jefferson Street For more information, please contact Cheryl M James,

Director of RCIA via phone: 201-659-1114 Ext. 102 or email: [email protected].

The FEAST of the EPIPHANY January 7th ‘Arise! Shine, for your light has come.’ (Isaiah 60:1) How did the Magi recognize an earth-shaking event in the humble stable with Joseph and Mary? Even the religious and political leaders of Israel missed the birth of the Messiah. So how could these pagan foreigners fall to their knees so readily, and offer such valuable treasures to this lowly child? Their expectations didn’t match up with what they found when they first laid eyes on the Holy Family. Like the Magi and the returning exiles, we have been given great and precious promises, about a heavenly kingdom, and also about God’s rule breaking into our world here and now. But how will that happen? Much of it depends on God’s timing, but a lot depends on us. Every day, God reassures us that even our smallest acts of love contain within themselves the splendor and glory of heaven. Today’s feast tells us that the glory of God can be present in the most hidden and unlikely people and situations. It tells us that God is there in the everyday rhythms of our lives. May He give us eyes of faith to see Him and trusting hearts to build the kingdom with Him. The results will be spectacular! “Thank you, Father, for the way you have traveled with us so far, and for the journey that lies ahead.” Adapted from the Word Among Us (wau.org) daily Meditation and Reflection

KEEP CHRISTMAS ALIVE Participate and/or Join a PARISH MINISTRY

We continue to celebrate Christmas through the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist Monday January 8th unlike the secular world who are readying for Valentines Day (which coincidentally is Ash Wednesday this year). As Catholic Christians, we are all called to participate in giving our time talent and treasure within our Faith Community; prayerfully consider volunteering for one of our ministries: Ministry to the Elderly & Infirmed at Peace Care NJ (formerly Cusack Center) Peace Care St Joseph’s (formerly known Cusack Center), located at 537 Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City, (a short walk from PATH Journal Square Bus Terminal), is a not for profit Organization sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace. They provide high-quality, faith-based care to the members of Hudson County. HOW CAN WE HELP? Primarily, companionship. Volunteers can choose to visit the long-term residents who may not have family near them and are just happy to see a smiling face and have simple conversation. As an active center, volunteers can choose to participate in the monthly afternoon birthday parties or BINGO held twice-weekly in the evenings. Days and hours are flexible! NEXT STEPS: If you are interested in volunteering at Peace Care or have questions, please email your name/contact information to Tiffany Kane, [email protected].

The BAPTISM of JESUS Monday January 8th “Behold, the Lamb of God.” (John 1:36) It can be easy to miss Jesus. Just ask John the Baptist. John knew he had been called to prepare the way for the Messiah. He was even Jesus’ kinsman! But still, by his own admission, John “did not know him” (John 1:31). He didn’t fully understand Jesus’ mission, but with time and insight from God, John did come to recognize Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ, and was able to proclaim, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” (John1:36). We may not always recognize Jesus as clearly as John did. Yet just like John, we, too, can grow in our awareness, little by little. Behold, the Lamb of God. Make it a goal to greet Jesus the moment we first wake up. All it takes is a simple “Good morning, Lord!” He delights to see us starting our day with even the briefest of conversations with Him. Behold, the Lamb of God. The morning greeting is a great lead-in to a quiet time of meditation. Even if it’s only five minutes, a regular time of prayer will help us grow more familiar with Jesus—who He is, how He speaks to us. Behold, the Lamb of God. Once the onslaught of the day begins, we will have struggles: there’s an office to get to, errands to run, a house to clean, caring for children... In the midst of these everyday challenges, Jesus doesn’t want us to forget that He is with us. At a couple of points in our day, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the Lord who is “walking by” us (John 1:36). Maybe keep a prayer card on your desk, or perhaps take a few minutes to open your Bible (or Bible App) and read while you eat lunch. Behold, the Lamb of God. In the evening, we may hit a point when we’re ready to unwind. Thankfully, we made it through the day—and DID IT with God’s help. Before going to sleep, pause to thank Jesus for how He was with us throughout our whole day. Reflect on the day and recall one or two ways that He blessed us with His peace or His guidance. Jesus, the Lamb of God, is with you, is with us. He loves it when we notice Him, just a little more each day! “Jesus, thank you for being with me always.” Adapted from the Word Among Us (wau.org) daily Meditation and Reflection
