“Connecting People” I John 1:1-3
The early followers of Jesus were deeply convicted of the need for their families, friends and communities to connect with Him. They seriously de-sired fellowship with other people that would come as a result of their con-nection. They wanted the fellowship to be real—like the fellowship they themselves had ”with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.” The mission of the church and of our Sunday Schools is to “Connect all people to Jesus (Savior) - to His truth (Scriptures), to His community (Saints) and to His mission (Service).
I. Connect people to the SAVIOR (v.2 “...we have seen and testify and proclaim to you...eternal life…”) A. PRAY for their connection to the Savior. B. PREACH that they might be connected to the Savior. C. MINISTER that they would be connected to the Savior.
II. Connect people to the SCRIPTURES (v.1 “...we have heard...the Word of Life…”) A. HEAR the Scriptures. B. READ the Scriptures. C. STUDY the Scriptures. D. MEDITATE on the Scriptures. E. MEMORIZE the Scriptures.
III. Connect people to the SAINTS (v.3 “...so that you too may have fellowship with us…”) A. People are connected to the church as they WORSHIP TOGETHER. B. People are connected to the church as they WORK TOGETHER. C. People are connected to the church as they WITNESS TOGETHER.
II. Connect people to SERVICE (v.5 “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you…”) - cf. Acts 1:8 A. God has given us the POWER to serve Him. B. God has given us the PLAN to serve Him. C. God has given us the PLACE to serve Him.
This is a theme that any church could adopt. It is a theme from which every Pastor could preach a series of sermons. It is a theme that every Sun-day School class could utilize. Give it some serious consideration. — rrc
It Might Preach!
2013, “A Year to Connect”
This year (2013) is the beginning of a five year emphasis on “Connecting People to Jesus,” particularly through the Sunday School. Our State Conven-tion and the Associations of Churches in Oklahoma are being encouraged to partner together in this emphasis. Essentially, the emphasis re-iterates what Jesus commanded us to do before He ascended to heaven. Only this thrust places Sunday School at the heart of the Great Commission. Our Sunday Schools can connect the people in our communities to Jesus, to His truth (the Bible), to His community (the church) and to His mission (seeking and saving the lost, Luke 19:10). I want to personally encourage our Pastors and lay-leaders—especially Sunday School Directors—to go to the BGCO website (www.bgco.org), click on Ministries, then Sunday School, then Resources. You will find a lot of great ideas and ways to enhance your Sunday School. Connecting people to Jesus is the reason our churches exist. In this brand new year may every Sunday School class, every Discipleship class, every Bible Study, every sermon and worship service CONNECT PEOPLE TO HIM. We have the power of His Holy Spirit, the plan in His Holy Word and the places (in your church and to the ends of the earth) to do it.
— Encouragingly Yours, Russell R. Cook

BLANKET THE STATE MINISTRIES Please contact Marsha Cook at [email protected] for how you can help in providing blankets for needy children and the homeless in Shawnee…OR…other needy persons in your area. WE NEED MANY, MANY BLANKETS!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!!!
A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY… Due to holiday printing schedules, I am writing this article just a couple of days after the shocking shooting at the school in Connecticut, which actually happened on my birthday. I have a feeling my birthdays in the future will now have this memory attached to them. But, that is “nothing” compared to how all of the birthday and Christmas celebrations for years and years to come in the families personally involved in this tragedy will never be the same again. The first reaction of many people has been to say that guns are the problem. If we are truly honest about it, we have to admit that guns are not the problem. They are inanimate objects until they are put into operation by a human being with a will to choose, a heart of destructive/evil intent, and a finger to pull the trigger. The first murder in history was done by one brother, Cain, to another, Abel. He had no gun…likely only his fists or a big rock or big stick. Senseless slaugh-ter. The baby Moses was hidden by his parents and rescued by a Princess whose father, the Pharoah, had ordered the murder of every baby boy born to the enslaved Hebrew women in Egypt. The midwives who received the order had no guns…they had a heart to avoid obeying the order. Eventually the sol-diers of the Pharoah used other means, probably swords or drowning, to carry out the order of murdering thousands of those baby boys. Years later, when our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord, was born as a baby in a manger, King Herod was so threatened by His birth that he ordered the murder of all baby boys under age two in the land, an act carried out by soldiers with swords. The beautiful stories of the rescue of baby Moses and the birth story of the baby Jesus are marred by the blood of those murdered babies around them, whose families were just as devastated as those in Connecticut. Senseless slaughter. Throughout the ages, pagan (godless) tribes and nations have practiced child sacrifice or infanticide. During WWII, thousands of Jewish children were starved, gassed, gunned down, buried alive, or subjected to hard labor until death. Senseless slaughter. Since 1973, with the passage of Roe v. Wade, nearly 55,000,000 babies in America have been put to death while still living and growing and maturing in the warmth and previous comfort of what should be the safest place on Earth—their mothers’ nurturing wombs. Their lives have been ended—before they could even see daylight or flowers or rainbows or could run and play in any school yard anywhere—by members of the medical profession, who are supposed to do all that is possible to prevent harm and to sustain life as long as possible. Senseless slaughter. THOU SHALT NOT KILL was not written on a tablet for guns or swords. It was written by the finger of God on that stone to then be written on the hearts of mankind! Father, forgive us…forgive us…forgive us…
