Mass Obligation Dispensation Extended
Archbishop Blair has extended the dispensation from
the Sunday obligation through Tuesday, February 16,
2021.
Mass from St. James Church is broadcast weekly on
YouTube.com. To view the YouTube Mass or for com-
plete Mass attendance protocols, please see the parish
website, www.stjamesmanchester.org.
Please be reminded that the requirement to wear a face
mask when in church pertains to everyone
and includes private prayer time, adoration
as well as Mass attendance.
The Online Giving option available to all parishioners
is an easy, convenient and secure way to make regular
offertory donations. In addition, Online Giving may
also be used to make donations on Holy Days, for sec-
ond collections (i.e., Saint James School, seasonal shar-
ing and St. Vincent de Paul) as well as Archdiocesan
collections which occur throughout the year. Taking
advantage of Online Giving eliminates the need to
write checks and keep track of envelopes. It also bene-
fits the parish because of the consistency of the support
and it eliminates the cost of printing and mailing enve-
lopes. To learn more or to sign up go to the Parish web-
site, www.stjamesmanchester.org; scroll to the bottom
of the page and click on Online Giving. If you have
questions or need additional information, call Marisa
Howard, business manager, 860-643-4129.
JUST A REMINDER…
When dropping off donations or items for the rectory,
please use the slot in the door. Please do not leave
anything in the black USPS mailbox on the building.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
Give Until It Hurts
One of the characteristics of Everyday Stewardship is to
be committed — to persevere daily in a way of life ac-
knowledging that everything belongs to God.
I know, I know. Easier said than done.
Just ask Zebedee. It’s quite an image we get from the
Gospel, after all. “So they left their father Zebedee in
the boat along with the hired men and followed him.”
There was Zebedee, about his business, mending nets
with his two sons, who were undoubtedly his best
workers — they had to have been more dedicated than
the hired men, who worked for wages rather than for
family. And in an instant off they go, following this
strange man.
I don’t know about you, but if my kids left me on a hot
summer day to finish the lawn by myself, I wouldn’t be
too happy.
But Zebedee must have been someone quite special.
Perhaps he realized that his sons didn’t belong to him
— not really. They belonged to God, and from the be-
ginning of time, it had been appointed that they would
be among the first disciples of Christ. He passed, he
called, they followed, and Zebedee obliged. He simply
went back to mending his nets, I imagine.
Zebedee already understood what St. Teresa of Calcutta
would say millennia later: “Give until it hurts.”
“You’re wasting my time.” “I’ve done so much for her;
she owes me this.” How often do we think things, and
even people and relationships, belong to us? The truth
is none of them do. We must be ready, as Zebedee was,
to surrender them to God when He comes walking
past. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS©LPi
NEW FOR LENT:
A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH THE
POWER OF THE GOSPEL
Lent is an important season in the Church’s liturgical
year. It is the time when we take stock of where we
are in our faith so as to prepare for the death and
resurrection of our Savior. Often we lose sight of the
point of this season because we get caught up in our-
selves: how hard it is to fast; how we fail at fasting;
and just waiting for the season to be over at Easter.
Because of this, we often arrive at Easter with our lives
no more changed that they were on Ash Wednesday.
A way that our parish is seeking to prepare for Jesus
and experience true transformation in our lives in this
powerful season is by engaging with a new program
from Ascension. This program is The Ascension Len-
ten Companion. This resource follows the Gospels for
each Sunday of Lent so we can better prepare for Mass
and grow closer to Jesus each day. It has daily medita-
tions, space for journaling, original sacred artwork and
weekly videos that will keep us on track.
The program kicks off on February 17 after the 7 p.m.
Mass at St. James Church. Meetings will take place
Wednesdays during Lent at 7 p.m. Masks and social
distancing will be required. A Zoom session will also
be available on Friday evenings if preferred.
Each participant will receive The Ascension Lenten
Companion to accompany him or her throughout the
entire Lenten season. This is an opportunity for our
whole community to enter into the season of Lent in-
tentionally and receive the grace God is waiting to
give us in this holy season. Join us and take full ad-
vantage of this transformative experience.
Books are limited so you must pre-register by calling
Karen at 860-916-4298 or emailing
[email protected]. Please include a
phone number and whether you prefer the Zoom or
live class. The cost of the workbook is $10 and a check
made payable to St. James Parish is preferred.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UN-
DERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
January 24, 2021

rd
Sunday in Ordinary Time
It was a normal day by all accounts, but John just wasn’t
feeling himself. He was a little lightheaded and out of
sorts. Later in the afternoon, he experienced a sharp pain
in his chest and arm. Quick thinking and action brought
John to the emergency department with a diagnosis of a
significant heart attack. Surviving this ordeal, he found
himself face to face with his cardiologist, having an hon-
est conversation about things that needed to change. “I
came close to death,” John found himself thinking. Then
came the remorse. He was a young man with a loving
wife and children who were very close to facing life
without him. John found himself with intense sorrow for
living an unchecked and self-indulgent life that almost
brought him to his demise. He wanted to change.
We all have our wake-up calls. We have experiences and
encounters that force us to really think twice about choic-
es we have made and directions we have taken. Often,
we find ourselves looking at those we have hurt square
in the eye and wallowing in our foolishness. We regretta-
bly realize that we have allowed our needs to lure us into
making some cruel mistakes. We impulsively say things
and flippantly do things that reveal our unredeemed and
unhealed self. It is a self we stumble over and try to tame
but can’t quite seem to master and control. Help!
We spin our wheels, naively thinking that we will some-
how, perhaps through persistence, get ourselves un-
stuck. But, we don’t. We just get out of the car, feeling
very helpless, and ignorantly look at the mess we got
ourselves into. Did we ever think to ask someone for
help? Or, taken the advice of One who is wiser and avoid
this route altogether? “Come after me,” are words that
Jesus says to all of us. In order to heed his invitation, we
must leave our ego-self behind and follow.

When we really see and understand the freedom, peace,
justice, and love he offers, we find ourselves with such
sorrow in our hearts for how foolish and silly we have
been. All the misguided choices and sinful actions come
full view and we see how risky our random impassioned
behaviors really have been. Repentance is beautiful.
When done with a sincere and contrite heart, it directs us
to the glory that can be ours, ignites us with the chal-
lenge of living a life in service of others and reminds us
that all is well.

To support married couples during this time
of social distancing, Worldwide Marriage Encounter is
sponsoring virtual marriage experiences. Some are on
weekends and some span multiple weeks on a given

sonality styles, improve listening and communication
skills, understand God’s plan for their marriage, and

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Who is a Parishioner of Saint James Parish?
While the answer may seem obvious to some, others fre-
quently ask for clarification on requirements for being con-
sidered a parishioner. We hope the following helps those
who may be unsure.
First, a parishioner is formally registered with Saint James
Parish. A faithful parishioner attends Mass regularly, par-
ticipates in church activities, and follows the Canon Law
admonition to contribute to the support of the parish.
Parishioners have their children baptized here and enroll
them in our CCD program. Assuming they meet other re-
quirements, they are eligible to receive parish certificates
enabling them to serve as Godparents or Confirmation
sponsors. They may be married here, and they may have
their funerals here.
Sometimes people assume they are parishioners because
they’ve been coming here for years, although they may
have never formally registered. If you’re not sure if you
are registered, please call Carole at the parish office,
860-643-4129.
CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COLLECTION 2021
The Catholic High School Collection, occurring in all
parishes of the Archdiocese on the weekend of January
23/24, supports the outstanding education offered at
our Catholic secondary schools by providing funds for
tuition assistance, technology enhancements, curricu-
lar improvements, and marketing, all of which are so
critical during this ongoing pandemic. Please consider
investing in the exceptional academics, solid faith for-
mation, and spirit of service at our high schools by
making a gift to this year’s Catholic High School Col-
lection on January 23/24.
LIVING A LIFE OF PRAYER
Our prayer lives should not be limited to a single hour
on Sunday mornings. In fact, the richer our prayer
lives are throughout the week, the more fully we will
be able to enter into the Sunday celebration of the Eu-
charist. Here are some ways to make your daily life
more prayerful:
Try attending daily Mass at least once a week.
Stop in church before or after work or on your
lunch hour for fifteen minutes of quiet prayer
before the Blessed Sacrament.
Make it a practice to say grace before every
meal—even if you are eating in the car.
Schedule time for family prayer at least once a
week. This prayer can be as simple as saying the
Our Father or a decade of the Rosary together.
Take time during the week to read or listen to the
readings for the upcoming Sunday. The readings
are available online at www.usccb.org/bible.
Begin your day with a brief prayer of thanksgiv-
ing to God, offering your day to Him.
End your day with an examination of conscience,
looking at your successes and failures in what
you have failed to do. If you are aware of serious
sin, receive the Sacrament of Penance before you
receive Holy Communion again.
