May our lives be a gift right back to him, To the one who still today forgives every sin. In our hearts may the light of Christ burn ever so bright, For He is our Christmas gift, the one true light. A gift that will never go out of style or get old, To the very end of time, and from the day it was foretold. May Christ be the heart of every Christmas gift we share, And may our hearts join together in joy, love and care, May the light dispel the darkness, the pain, the despair, For Emmanuel, God with Us, is with us everywhere. So Merry Christmas to all gathered far and gathered here, Receive the gift of forgiveness and love, and be of great cheer. For to us this day a child is given, light of the world is he. May he enter our hearts and shine his true light, for the whole wide world to see.

The Newsletter of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

January 2021

Darkness overshadowed a people distressed, Their faith in God put deeply to the test,

Yet the words of Isaiah create sweet perfume: They proclaim no gloom, no tomb, and even no room, For sorrow and mourning to continue and bloom.

Though shadows of night stretch forth and loom, yet all that very darkness, just one candle will consume.

The people in darkness have seen a great light, Those who lived in the shadows, now burning bright, Is salvation for the sinner; and for the blind, the gift of sight.

The time has come to shine, for God has given a sign, To multiply the nation, and bless the whole creation, To fill all hearts with joy, at the coming baby boy.

For unto us a child has been born, For rich and poor, for the joyous, and forlorn. Gift to the world, Counselor, Mighty God, May the Holy One, the Prince of Peace be given praise and laud.

The throne of David and the kingdom he will forever uphold, Where justice and righteousness are gifts never to be sold.

The King of Kings came to this world humbly, we are told, With Mary, with Joseph, in times of old, To a feeding trough, a manger, a stable of animals to hold. Why was royalty treated this way? This certainly never would happen today. Why did God from on high, come down so low, So humbly, so meekly, so weakly, do you know?

To reach you and me, and the worldwide we, For a world that fell short again and again, Filled with people like us who couldn’t escape our own sin.

He came down for us when we couldn’t reach up high, To live, to forgive, and even to die, So we could be together forever, And one day never again… need to cry.

He lives today in our joy and praise, He lives today in our darkest days, His light shines in the darkness, it will not overcome it, From our deepest valleys to our highest summit,

Emmanuel is With Us, every moment, every day, Jesus came to us on Christmas, and his light is here to stay.

He came for every little boy, for every man and lad, He came for every little girl and woman, so be glad, No matter your face, your place, your race, No matter your cast, and no matter your past,

Our Christmas gift is Christ the Lord, May he be praised and loved, worshiped and adored,

For he is our hope, our way, our peace, So may our love in return never cease.

May our lives be a gift right back to him, To the one who still today forgives every sin.

He is the reason for the lights and the cheer, He is why the angels said, have no fear, So in our gifts, in the wrappings, in every bow, Let’s make sure our stuff and things don’t steal the show.

A Message from our Church Council President: Dear Friends in Christ: I hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and well! Now that the COVID-19 vaccine is beginning to arrive, I am starting to look forward to writing this monthly letter without having to lead with public health concerns – that’s going to be a great day!

Of course, as the CDC reminds us, we are going to need to continue taking precautions for a while yet even as people are getting vaccinated. We’re getting close enough to the shore to see the palm trees, but don’t get impatient and jump out of the boat while the water is still over our heads – we are going to make it!

I am deeply looking forward to Christmas services this year for several reasons: first of course because it’s a celebration of when our savior came into the world to be with us. But also, in a season when so many of us can’t safely travel to be with family and friends that we may only see this time of year, it’s a reminder that we can celebrate Christmas with our Holy Trinity family. I have spoken with many members of the congregation since March who have told me that their Holy Trinity community connection was a Godsend through all these months of isolation.

And as the year ends and we approach the beginning of the end of the pandemic, I have been thinking back over the previous many months and how everyone in our community, from the congregation to the office staff to our pastors to the music ministry, have worked so hard to help us all stay connected and feeling less alone during this extraordinary time. It’s way too soon to rest on our laurels, but it’s still a source of comfort and dedication to see how well we have responded to the pandemic as a close community bonded by our shared faith.

With all our best holiday wishes from my family to yours, please have a warm and meaningful holiday season in celebration of the birth of Christ and our love for each other as Christians.

Yours in Christ,

Mark Ritter

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church: MONTHLY UPDATE

Stewardship Committee:

Welcome to 2021! It is truly a new day and a New Year! We are all looking forward to putting the struggles of 2020 behind us along with the pandemic as the vaccine begins its distribution throughout the country and the world. We again thank you sincerely for your financial intents and commitments to Holy Trinity for our Ministries & Programs which are beginning anew now. Our Fall Stewardship Appeal of "Continuing to Build a Culture of Generosity" was a great success thanks to you and your Holy Trinity Family. Even through the pandemic we exceeded our goals in both number of Intent Cards received and the amount of giving pledged. We look forward throughout this coming year to continuing to share stories of generosity and what giving to God has meant to people and their lives. We look forward to continuing to build on your generosity. During the past year we have each had opportunities to help other people through this pandemic in many ways. By caring, showing love or doing something to assist a family member, friend or even a stranger through this tough time. We wanted to share some appropriate words from Pastor Rick

Warren, author of the famous book "The Purpose Driven Life" discussing that God will remember the help you gave to others during this time:

Page 2

“God is fair; he will not forget the work you did and the love you showed for him by helping his people. And he will remember that you are still helping them” (Hebrews 6:10 NCV).

"Our reward in heaven is going to be based on what we did here on earth. One day, we’re all going to stand before God, and he’s going to say, “What did you do with what you were given?” Do you want to say, “Well, I made a lot of money, retired, and died”?

You were put on earth for more than that! Instead, live unselfishly and give yourself away for others and the Kingdom of God. Then you will be able to say to God, “I gave it all, Lord. I’m laid bare. Everything I have and am, I gave it away for the Gospel.”

One of the most significant things you can do with your life is to give it away—to be generous with what you’ve been given, including your money, resources, time, and talent. God says clearly that when there is no service or generosity, there will be no reward in heaven. Is that how you want your time on earth to end? Make your time on earth count for eternity. Help people come to know Christ, discover their purpose for life, grow in their maturity, find their ministry, and serve in their mission in the world." Thank you for giving of yourself to God's growth in ministry and mission here at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, to our community and to the world!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It has been nearly a year that I have been serving with you at Holy Trinity. What a year it has been! There have been many challenges we have all had with the pandemic. We have learned how to be the church in these strange times. God has been so good to us and has empowered us to overcome the challenges and grow in ways that we had not planned on. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

I have witnessed the love and kindness of Christ through you all as you serve this church, the community and the world. We witnessed this love and kindness personally as our family went through this past year. Shortly after we moved here, my Mom who lived with us had a heart attack and a major stroke. She died in November from COVID-19. Please know that your cards, messages, expressions of love have meant so much to us! We are deeply touched and so very grateful! Looking forward to serving with you and navigating whatever challenges and joys are coming next!

+ with much love and appreciation

There are many ways you can give to Holy Trinity. You can mail or drop off a check (there is a box in the sanctuary for drop off), you can have your bank send automatic drafts, you can give through Vanco or PayPal online (visit our website-look for the “Ways to give at Holy Trinity” box on the lower right side of blue boxes on the home page), and you can have your IRA manager mail a check directly from your account.

Thank you Steve, Joe, Teresa & Lily! Our Blessings in a Backpack program became a partner with Atlanta Community Food Bank recently, which means that we can occasionally receive food from them at minimal cost. We had our first order of 1,060 pounds of food to pick up from ACFB location this month, and BOT Men's Group came to the rescue as always and at such short notice!

Steve Dotseth and Joe Paonessa picked up two large pallets of food, protected them from rain, dropped them off at our church and helped unload over 200 cases of food. I can't thank you enough! Also, Teresa and Lily were able to turnaround a needed check at lightning speed - you are amazing! Special thanks to Pastors and the office staff for making this partnership possible to begin with. I am always so impressed with our church family and everyone's willingness to help out. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Glad to be a part of our HT family, Mirna Lee

Thank you Holy Trinity for you support for the Christmas Angel Tree. We started with 135 ornaments on the tree, but with your generosity we delivered over 140 items and gift cards. We also appreciate the extra support from the Monday School sisters, the TLC Women's Circle, and Thrivent to make it possible to achieve our goal. This will make a great difference for the Cobb Foster Children to celebrate Christmas. DFCS told me they were able to help some Foster Families in other counties as well this year for the first time. Patti and I were able to work a few hours over two days in the warehouse helping to organize all the gifts received. Your support is greatly appreciated! MONDAY SCHOOL “REZOOMS” MONDAY, JANUARY 11TH

Our new book for the spring is written by one of our favorite authors, Max Lucado. We will be reading and studying his newest book: YOU

ARE NEVER ALONE, which was written during the pandemic. Max asks if you have these thoughts: "When life feels depleted, does God

care? I'm facing an onslaught of challenges, will God help? When life grows dark and stormy,

does God notice? I'm facing the fear of death, will God help me?" Again, Max says "you and I long for someone who will meet us in the midst of life's messes. We long to believe in a living, loving, miracle-working God who won't think twice about stepping into the thorny thickets of

our world and lifting us out". Sound assuring and comforting? Then please join us on Monday, January 11th, at 10AM as we learn, share, and grow together in our belief and trust in our God.

If interested, contact either Marcia Heinzer or Patti Ritter for zooming information. Also, the book is available on Amazon, Christian Books.com and at Walmart, which is a super first. We hope we get to see you on the "Zoom Gallery Screen". Blessings until then.

Memorials and Gifts to Holy Trinity

Gifts in memory of Bonnie Baechtel to Holy Trinity was received from: Diane Rancourt, Richard & Jean Brewer, Cullene Harper, Malcolm & Lori Stennes and John Parker.

Gifts in memory of Sue Hammock and Shirley Gorley to the Angel Tree were received from the Monday School Sisters.

A gift in memory of David Lovich to the Sunday Worship and Music ministry was received from the Monday School Sisters.

A gift in memory of Ron Apple to the Columbarium was received from the Monday School Sisters.

As you are probably aware, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church participates in The Daffodil Project—a mission to create a worldwide living memorial by planting daffodils to honor each of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. To share in fulfilling the dream, the Go Green Team at Holy Trinity has planted a total of 2,100 daffodils throughout the church campus.

This year while planting bulbs, we experienced a Godwink. A passing car full of five inquisitive young men stopped and asked to participate in the planting event. Although outfitted in dress shirts and ties they were eager to roll-up their sleeves to assist, especially when they learned more about the living memorial project. We wish these young men continued success in their Mormon mission calling.

When serving God, there are no coincidences. All are welcome.

Children, Adult and Family Ministry Update

We are gearing up and so excited to get to have our great activities together

again! The classrooms for our elementary kids are being redesigned and all

classrooms in the building will be sanitized before our start date. Below you will

get a peek at the progression of a classroom. Each room is going to be unique and

geared to the age group that meets there.

Thank you Linda Vogt, Monique Richardson,

Troop 14404, Janet Stratton, Stephanie

Landry and friends. They have spent many

hours beautifying and “cute-ifying” the

classrooms for our children. We are looking

forward to seeing the children’s faces when they view their

“new” rooms.

We have missed seeing all your lovely faces!

We look forward to seeing you again soon

in the new year.

Pay it BACK … Pay it DOWN… Pay it FORWARD

Total dollars pledged over three years: $645,080 Actual dollars received to date: $404,655

FINALLY…. Its 2021, and HT remains so blessed! Contributions to the Capital Campaign now exceed $400,000, thanks to the giving members of HT, and their dedication to this campaign.

While there are many projects planned for these funds, the pandemic obviously has made it difficult and problematic to move forward on most of them. Please be assured that the dollars contributed reside in an interest bearing account. Once the opportunity presents itself, the highest priority projects (door replacement, parking lot resealing, caulking/painting, wood trim replacement, etc) contracts will be let, and the work will begin on those projects.

Please remember, all funds contributed have been and will continue to be used in support of the following programs, when it is possible to do so:

Pay it BACK: This segment focuses on the upgrade and repair of our Church home.

Pay it DOWN: This segment goes directly to reduce the principal of Holy Trinity’s mortgage by individuals who

designate their contributions to do so, and also once a year from the Capital Campaign as a whole.

Pay it FORWARD: This segment, currently a tithe (10%) of the total contributed dollars each year, is support of our

outreach to three important programs: 1) Lutheranch, 2) The Southeastern Synod & 3) Guyana Mission.

If you are a new member at Holy Trinity, or if your individual circumstances have changed, please consider supporting HT’s Capital Campaign. Should you have any questions, my email address is [email protected].

I trust that your Holidays Season was a joyful one, and may the New Year provide renewed blessings of health and happiness for you, and your family.

Prayerfully Submitted, Jim Wood, Capital Campaign Committee

they don’t have as many churches or organizations helping during this hard time!

If you are interested in helping us with this ministry, here’s how:

Send in a check made out to Holy Trinity for $25.00 marked “for MUST Lunch”

THE KINGS RINGERS AND TRINITY TREBLER CHIMES will resume rehearsal the week

of January 11th.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED in our Christmas Lessons and Carols Service

on December 27th. We are grateful for all of our musicians who are part of Holy Trinity.

TRINITY TREBLERS THEORY ASSIGNMENTS are due to Dr. Won-Hee on January 15th

(music workbook pages 26-33). Check the schedule for the assignments and email them to

Dr. Won-Hee at [email protected].

TRINITY TREBLERS is the new name for our Children’s Music Ministry, and we would like to have

every child at Holy Trinity joining with us during this unusual time of COVID-19. While we are not able

to sing in choir, we are still doing some fun activities. Dr. Won-Hee An, our associate minister of music

is heading up this part of our music ministry.

What happens during Trinity Treblers, you may ask? Right now we are working on music reading and

theory using a book that we provide called “Music for Little Mozarts.” Assignments are attached via a

syllabus in the book. The participating child simply needs to finish the assignments by the date listed,

take a picture of the assignment pages (or scan the pages), then email them to Dr. Won-Hee at

[email protected]. If your child scores 90 to 100% on the assignment, they will receive a musical

gift. This will not be a cheap plastic toy, but rather something fun and useful. And latecomers will be

allowed to catch up. Just contact Dr. Won-Hee for details.

Our Children’s Music Ministry is much different than it has been in the past. We are committed to being

child and family focused, with an emphasis on the following: 1) Teaching the children about God through

music, 2) Being inclusive of every child, 3) Focusing on the needs of the child and their families, and 4)

Making what we do fun. We want every child to take part. Join us!

Dear Church Family,

On behalf of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer’s Soup Kitchen Team, I want to convey deep gratitude for your gifts of new socks for the homeless men who weekly visit their community outreach program. Those clean socks are a favorite gift to those in great need. When Howdy delivered the two large bags of socks, the community guests were in line for their meals, and the Redeemer staff expressed their amazement at the quantity of socks and their thanks to all of you.

Out of an abundance of caution, the staff there has put us local church volunteers on hold. Our Holy Trinity team members are ready when we are given the OK to return.

Next Month’s Featured Project-Sew Powerful Purse kits.

W-ELCA hopes to host the Lenten Soup Supper this year, but this will depend on the status of

the vaccinated members who can host and members who will be able to attend. As things

progress and we get closer to Lent, we will update the congregation via the Trumpet

and E-News.
