Lent is generally a somber time, a season of self-reflection and self- examination. Traditionally, the songs and hymns are a bit subdued, the alleluias in the liturgy “put away,” all to heighten the eventual glory of Easter, the joyful goal of the season. But what is Lent all about, really? The word itself means springtime. Its traditions go back to the early centuries of the church, a time of preparation for baptismal candidates (catechumens) to go through the requisite training and preparation for baptism at the Easter Vigil. Over time Lent evolved, from a season of baptismal preparation to a season of faith renewal. To this end, certain disciplines were encouraged fasting, prayer and almsgiving intentionally practiced as part of a penitential journey through the 40 days. In our present day, it is common to think of Lent as a time when we are asked to give something up. Giving something up is a form of fasting, the intentional deprivation of food or certain kinds of food for the purpose of deepened spiritual awareness. In some Christian traditions, fasting is considered a requirement. In the Lutheran tradition it is an optional. (Thank goodness!) As someone for whom fasting is not a particular strength, I am thankful for this option. Fasting is but one way to deepen faith. And so the question, here at the beginning of Lent: how will I use the season before me to renew my faith? What will I do this Lent to give my spirit a boost? As I ask that question of myself, I invite you to ask the question, too. What is your plan for renewal? Are you considering giving something up? Perhaps you’re considering taking something up, such as a new or neglected practice? Do you have a plan? It is generally considered inappropriate to call undue attention to whatever spiritual practices we may take up during Lent. We call to mind Jesus’s warnings against displaying your religious goods in public. But while parading our spiritual practices is a clear danger, I think there’s a great deal of value in sharing our renewal journey with others. Through sharing, there is the chance that our practice might inspire and encourage others along their way. In February, we will be inviting you to share your “plan for renewal” for the upcoming season of Lent. Cards will be available for you to write down and share (anonymously, of course) your intended practice, however simple and small. Perhaps it is to commit to pausing for prayer before every meal, or to read a passage of scripture every night, or write a thank you note to someone you appreciate every day. Big or small, intentional practices, done in faith, can turn into habits of lasting value. In the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday, we will post these renewal plans in the narthex, where others will have the opportunity to see and perhaps join you on your particular renewal journey. Let’s take advantage of every opportunity to grow in faith, especially as we journey together through this season of renewal! Pr. Tom Kildea

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26th. Lent is generally a somber time, a season of self-reflection and self-examination. To this end, certain disciplines were encouraged — fasting, prayer and almsgiving — intentionally practiced as part of a penitential journey through the 40 days. In our present day, it is common to think of Lent as a time when we are asked to give something up. Giving something up is a form of fasting, the intentional deprivation of food — or certain kinds of food — for the purpose of deepened spiritual awareness. In some

Christian traditions, fasting is considered a requirement.

But while

parading our spiritual practices is a clear danger, I think there’s a great deal of value in sharing our renewal journey with others.

Making Sense of the Cross

A Lenten Study: Thursdays at noon and Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM

Two groups will be gathering this Lent to begin an exciting study called “Making Sense of the Cross.” There is no expectation that you have prior knowledge of the Bible or theology. Just bring your questions and openness to talk about matters of the cross and resurrection of Jesus. The Thursday Class begins February 27 at 12 noon. (Those who wish to share a brown bag lunch come at 11:30.) We’ll be meeting in the Fellowship Hall at Redeemer Lutheran Church, for about 90 minutes (including Lenten devotions).

The first Sunday class will be on March 2. We will meet in Pastor Jaye’s office for about 45 minutes.

Each session includes viewing a video in which the Rev. David Lose introduces the day’s topic. The session book is available in the church office.

Youth Recaps

Parents’ Night Out was held on December 20th, 2019. Alpha & Luther Leagues joined up (with the help of Ann Mauro, Anna Lange and Brittney Pigeon) to babysit/entertain a group of 10 younger children ages 3 – 10 years old. We played games, colored pictures and ate pizza for dinner. It was so wonderful to see the older youth working with the younger children at the event! Hopefully everyone went home exhausted. 😊😊

John 15:9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my life”.

At Redeemer we want our children to know that we have an unconditional love from God, no matter what we may do wrong to others, and that we have loving families who take care of us and love us each day. We really stress to them that we have to always show love to each other. Our Valentine parties are a time for us to celebrate “love” with class friends and we try to show love to each other, patience, and understanding in our everyday actions and words to each other. We thank our room parents for coordinating these parties and for giving their time to their child’s class, a true gift of love! Thank you to our parents and friends for coming to our Christmas Pageants in December. It was wonderful to see everyone’s smiles as the children were on the stage presenting their songs and recitations. Thank you, parents, for donating towards the Christmas trees for families in the armed forces. We collected enough to supply four trees! Thank you to our dads (or special someone) for coming to their special night on January 30th. This month besides Valentine parties we also will learn about proper dental care with a visit from April, a dentist hygienist of Randolph Pediatric Dental during “D” week. We start “Read Across America” activity the end of the month with visits from Clifford the big Red Dog (thank you to our room parents). A huge thank you goes to our fundraising Chairperson, Jessica Malcolm for many volunteered hours that she gives to RCS. The Yankee Candle and Gertrude Hawk fundraisers were a success and more fundraisers are on the way... stay tuned! We use this money for classroom supplies, we plan to purchase new mulch this year, other needed classroom items and we will have Rizzo’s Reptiles come in for a demonstration show in March from money made with these fundraisers. In the past our Hatch (preschool smartboard), security camera, iPads, Buddy Bench, closet and rugs were some of the items purchased from our fundraisers. Some of you have reached out to help Jessica with fundraising and we still are in need of help. Please let us know if you can help with this. Our registration is underway for Fall 2020. We still have more spots available especially in the younger classes. Thank you for referring our school to others. Word of mouth is our most important mode of advertising! We appreciate your support. Have a loving, caring, and warm month. God’s love warms our hearts! God Bless all of you, Cindy Stevens & the RCS Staff
