TRANSCRIPT
January 2020 Vol 10, No 1
Last month, I saw an
article titled something
like, “What Happened in
the 2010s.” Yes, that’s
right, the 2010s are
behind us! We are in a new decade. A lot
has happened here at NHPC in the past ten
years. Did you know that all our current
staff, except for one, began work at New
Hope in the 2010s? Sophia Burton has
been with us for over twenty years in the
nursery, but the rest of us are not even at
the ten-year mark. If you go a little further
back, you’ll see that the first twenty years
of the 21st century has brought a lot of
changes to the congregation. We have
added a building, built a columbarium, and
purchased New Hope Camp and
Conference Center from the presbyteries
which were no longer able to operate it.
Where will the next ten or twenty years
take us? Our session has been talking
about what it means to be a Christian and a
church member in today’s America.
Research shows that today, few Americans
are members of a church. Think of what
your friends and neighbors are missing by
not being part of a caring community such
as ours! I hope that as the 2020s begin, we
will keep on caring as we have been for so
many years: caring for others, caring for
our land, caring for our own souls through
communion with Christ. I believe that
others will see how much we care and
will want to be a part of what is
happening here.
I also hope that you and
I will carry whatever
blessings we received in
the last decade, and pass those blessings
on as this decade begins. If you have
received any opportunities, support,
encouragement, inspiration, or other good
things, start your 2020 off right by finding
ways to bless others just as you have been
blessed.
Wishing all a Happy New Year!
in Christ,
Kerri

Director of Christian Education Mary Todd Peters
Dear New Hope Friends,
It is my prayer for all of us that we
will hold Micah 6:8 in front of us:
That we seek justice, love kindness
and walk humbly with God into this
new year, new century. May you
find hope and comfort that you do not walk alone
in this endeavor. May you feel the love of God, the
presence of the Holy Spirit and the kindness of the
Christ surrounding you and guiding you in the days
ahead. Happy New Year! I look forward to
continuing to share in our ministry at New Hope!
New Book Study for Parlor Class 9:45 am on Sunday Mornings
Interrupted: When Jesus Wrecks Your
Comfortable Christianity, by Jen Hatmaker.
This book follows the author’s messy journey through
life and church and into living on mission. Snatching
Jen from the grip of her consumer
life, God began asking her ques-
tions like, “What is really the point
of My Church? What have I really
asked of you?” She was far too
busy doing church than being
church, even as a pastor’s wife, an author of five
Christian books, and a committed believer for 26
years. She discovered she had missed the point.
Christ brought Jen and her family to a place of living
on mission by asking them tough questions, leading
them through Scripture, and walking together with
them on the path. Interrupted invites readers to take a
similar journey.
Renew Your Baptismal Vows on
Baptism of the Lord Sunday
On January 12 we will celebrate the Baptism of Jesus and the beginning of his earthly ministry. This is an oppor-tunity to celebrate your own baptism and renew your baptism promises. A simple way to renew one’s baptism is to gather around a bowl of water and a burning candle. You can read the story of Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:13-17. Then say this prayer together:
Lord Jesus, the light of a star led the Magi to you.
Help us guide others to your unfading light.
Lord Jesus, in the River Jordan you were proclaimed
God’s beloved child. Strengthen us in our baptism
as your brothers and sisters.
Lord Jesus, you have brought us through the waters
of death to new life. Renew in us the power of
your Spirit so that we may follow you in peace.
Lord Jesus, you were anointed by the Spirit to bring
good news to the afflicted. Give us the grace to
serve all those in need. Amen.

Director of Music Allen Amos
We will be singing one of my favorite
closing hymns for the month of
January. “God Be With You Till We
Meet Again” is an emotional hymn of
prayer written in 1882 by Jeremiah
Eames Rankin, a Congregational
minister of New England. His purpose
for writing the hymn
was to find a way for the Christian to
say good-bye which was not
contradictory to his faith and
belief. He finally settled on the phrase
“God be with you,”which he felt was
the Christian way of saying “good-bye
until we meet again.” The story is told
that Rankin invited two composers to
write music for the text. One
composer was well known (Ralph
Vaughan Williams) and the other
unknown (William G. Tomer). He chose the work of
the unknown composer as his preferred version. He
certainly must have been inspired in his choice,
because the harmony and words are so easily sing-
able. I hope that you feel a sense of rest and relief
from the holidays and that you find a deep peace as
we enter 2020. Until we meet again...
Creator of the Stars
God of Epiphanies You are the Great Star You have marked my path with light You have filled my sky with stars Naming each star Guiding it Until is shines upon my heart Awakening me to deeper seeing New revelations And brighter Epiphanies O infinite Star Giver I now ask for wisdom and courage To follow these stars For their names are many And my heart is fearful. They shine on me wherever I go: The Star of Hope The Star of Mercy and Compassion The Star of Justice and Peace The Star of Tenderness and Love The Star of Suffering The Star of Joy And every time I feel the shine I am called To follow it To sing it To live it All the way to the cross And beyond O Creator of the Stars You have become within me An unending Epiphany.

Cub Pack 449 meets 1st
and 3rd (of the month) on
Tuesday nights.
Troop 449 Scouts had a
jerky-smoking campout on
December 7-8. A number
of Webelos Scouts in the
area participated, and
have shown interest in
joining our Troop.
Scouting, at all levels, helps to equip
young people with skill-sets they can
use throughout life. Scouting is open
to boys AND girls.
If you know young men from 1st thru
5th grade, or ages 7-10, who’re inter-
ested in what Cubs have to offer, or
ages 11-17 years of age who may
benefit from the fellowship, training,
and leadership skills available in the
Boy Scouting Program, please check
out our websites: pack449.org and
troop449.org, or see Al Townsend
for more information.
It’s not cold when you are thinking about summer….and we always are here at
camp. Summer camp kicks off June 15th, 2020. This year we have a camp for rising kindergartners – ‘Get Ready, Get
Set, and Let’s Go to Kindergarten’. It’s a great way to prepare your kindergartner for the exciting year ahead. You can register online.
Sign up for our spring themed intersession camps. Join us for ‘Down in the Deep Blue Sea’, ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’, and ‘It’s in Your
Backyard’. Register online and join in the fun.
We are live….with our
new website. Please check it out – same address www.newhopeccc.org. It is worth just checking out the fabulous staff pictures.
Hiring for specialty and general counselors, counselors-in-training, and lifeguards has started. Job descriptions are online and you may also apply at that time. Our Summer Camp Director will follow up once the application has been
received.
We have an easier way for you to donate to camp.
Go online and on our home page there is a donate button. Just click and go. You are able to select where you would like the donation to go – Annual Fund, Scholarship, or General. Donating just got easier – so click away.
Thank you to those who contributed to the Annual Fund. We truly appreciate your support for the all that we do at New Hope Camp and Conference Center.
