Happy New Year!

most current recording devices available and repairing any damage to them quickly, at no additional cost to the community.

HEB Golf ExperienceAs we prepare for the 2020 golf season, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure our course conditions are reflective of the Championship Level Course the golfing community deserves, for our resident players and their guests as well as the non-resident players who help defray some of the associated expenses. An Ad Hoc, Resident Golf Committee was formed in December to review various aspects of the HEB Golf Experience. They have made recommendations that the Board will act upon at our January Board Meeting. These will address several aspects of the Golf experience including non-league day tee time access for resident, non-season pass holders, non-resident players who have purchased promotional offerings, and resident season pass holders.

The items mentioned here are all 1st Quarter objectives. Obviously, there is a lot more on our plate as the year rolls out. We will give you insights of those plans in future Newsletter updates. The Board, alongside the OB staff, works hard to make sure we’re looking down range far enough to make the quality of life aspects of HEB line up with our vision of being the Premier Age-Restricted Community in all of Colorado!

www.heritageeaglebend.com

Happy New Year! The Board hopes each of you had a joy-filled holiday season

with family and friends.

The term 2020 usually pertains to perfect vision. While we don’t have a crystal ball telling us exactly all that will be accomplished during the upcoming year, we do have focused plans for the implementation of certain goals and objectives.

Loan RepaymentTo begin, we have started the repayment of the internal loans used to finance the Repurposing Project. For those residents who did not live here when the project began, the community voted to “borrow” money from existing funds at a rate substantially below the market rates available to us from commercial lending institutions – and – repay those loans, over seven years, at a rate higher than we were earning on them at our financial investment entity. A win/win for all of us. The repayment is coming from the $15 per month component allocated to the Capital Improvement Fund in our monthly HOA dues, plus the 3-months HOA fees collected from new residents moving into HEB at the time of closing. This was all formalized through Board Resolution 19-1 passed on January 31, 2019, after the Budget election by the community in November 2018. The initial payment of $26,733.33 from the Repurpose (Capital Improvement) Fund was processed in December and was for the purpose of paying interest to the lending funds for the construction period until December 31, 2019. Beginning in January 2020, monthly principal and interest payments will be made from the Capital Improvement Fund to the lender funds as follows: Contingency Fund - $6,511.39, Litigation Fund - $8,298.83 and Reserve Fund $7,660.46. This will continue for a total of 84 months.

It is our expectation to hold a Repurposing Project Financial Reconciliation Town Hall in January to give a detailed explanation of fund expenditures and repayment. The date is yet to be determine as of this writing.

Gate Surveillance CamerasWe are also moving forward to enhance surveillance capabilities at all 7 entrance / exit gates. We all recognize HEB is not a secure community as the public has access to our Clubhouse and Golf Course, plus the open access (no fence) for those residents living on the backside of the East (of Gartrell Road) Side. After close consultation with the Aurora Police Department, the Facilities & Grounds Committee researched state of the art solutions for capturing a record of vehicles and pedestrians entering and leaving the community. They have recommended a solution that will enable us to achieve that objective – and – maintain a 30-day, cloud-based video record with the

President’s Message by Steve Hungerford, President of Master Board

It’s that time of year to change the entry code for all of the gates in Heritage Eagle Bend.

We will be sending the gate code to the Delegates, who will then send

it out to the residents in their District. If you don’t know who your Delegate is, or haven’t heard from them by January 15, 2020, please

contact Kortney at [email protected] or 720-235-1827.

Please do not give this code out to other than family or friends.

Delivery persons have already been notified of the change and/or given their own code.

If you have a delivery coming, please instruct them to look up your last name,

find the code assigned to your phone number and call you directly from the HEB gate / enterphone system.

You will press “9” on your phone to open the gate. This only works when they call you from the HEB enterphone system.

It doesn’t work from cell phone to cell phone.

GATE CODE CHANGE: JANUARY 15, 2020!

General Manager’s Message Gene Blum, General Manager

What an incredible Holiday season we had in December with over 60 parties and banquets filling up the Clubhouse with joy and excitement. It was wonderful to see all the families during our Brunch with Santa and it really warmed my heart

when I saw everyone showing off the incredible changes in the Clubhouse. We also hosted the annual Resident Holiday Party, which again sold out in just one day. At the event, residents thanked the wonderful staff for all their hard work. We also rang in 2020 with our signature New Year’s Eve Celebration with food, dancing and joy. We served thousands of people in December alone, and the staff worked long and hard to deliver the kind of service you expect at the Club and to make sure every event was special. I would like to personally thank the staff for their efforts and encourage you to do the same the next time you visit the Clubhouse and Eagle’s Nest Restaurant. We couldn’t do it without their commitment.

2020 is going to be a truly special year at HEBGC now that the Clubhouse renovations are complete. I couldn’t be more proud of the Club. The looks on future brides faces as they come tour the facility has really been something to see. Guests that have been at the Club for events have been blown away by the new look and have been re-booking their annual events with Jennifer. The word is getting out as well. We have been getting inquiries as guests are telling their friends and family about the NEW Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club and the exceptional service they received.

Speaking of events, in January we invite you to more events at the Clubhouse. On January 7, come have fun with Bingo in the Ballroom. January 15th brings a monthly Dance with the DJ, and we can’t wait to see everyone showing off their dance moves on the new dance floor. Our wine tastings have been incredibly popular and in January we’re excited to bring a Sake Wine Tasting on January 18th. The imported wines have been hand-picked from various regions of Japan and Chef is very excited to pair authentic Japanese cuisine with those wines. Trivia is coming back on January 29th and we invite everyone to make their dinner reservations during sign-up. I look forward to seeing all of you at these popular events. An important note about restaurant service for the coming months. Starting in January, the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant will be closed on Mondays. Monday restaurant service will resume in April.

I am truly looking forward to the exciting opportunities ahead of us for 2020. I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you again and again in your new Clubhouse!

RESPECT. If you can give others respect and expect it in return, you can help keep board discussions civil, productive and on point. We’re looking for people who can lead by consensus, not by command. GOOD LISTENING. People want to be heard. Can you listen to board members and residents with sincere interest? You may have a few ideas of your own, but everyone benefits by sharing and discussing. THICK SKIN. Sometimes, residents—even other board members—can be mean and insulting. Are you good at turning a conversation around and finding out what’s really bothering people? EGOS ASIDE. If you can give others credit, the board will operate better as a team. AGENDA ASIDE. Members who come to the board looking to help only themselves are a problem. A board is more productive when members don’t have a personal punch list. Are you able to look after the community, not just your own interests? Are you willing to compromise?

Village Voice by Valerie Ness

It’s Snow Time! Types of snow can be designated by the shape of its flakes, description of how it is falling, and by how it collects on the ground. A blizzard and snow storm

indicate heavy snowfalls over a large area, snow squalls give heavy snowfalls over narrow bands, while flurries are used for the lightest snowfall. Once on the ground, snow can be categorized as powdery when fluffy, granular when it begins the cycle of melting and refreezing, and crud or eventually ice once it packs down into a dense drift after multiple melting and refreezing cycles.

Colorado is famous for its dry Champagne Powder: That’s NOT what we had in November, that was “heart attack snow” because it was so wet. Champagne is soft, dry and fluffy, but with a lot of skiing, traffic, or once the air bubbles have been squished out, this soft and delightful stuff turns quickly into ICE. Snow is something that may be shoveled, played in, and nice to look at. Your Villages HOA is obligated to shovel it for you if it meets the shoveling criteria (3 or more inches). Villages is responsible for removal of snow on driveways, personal sidewalk to entrance of house and also mail kiosks. Porches are NOT the HOA responsibility. It is up to the homeowner to remove snow on porches or patios.

Now this may seem somewhat obvious, but ICE is not snow, ICE is ICE. Ice does not fall under that snow shoveling mandate. Ice is YOUR responsibility and ice is a serious

problem if you have a North facing driveway or entry. Your HOA is NOT responsible for ice removal. You may need to take steps (be careful!) to ensure you have some Ice melting material, that you have safe shoes or boots, and that you walk on the “sunny side of the street”. I’m not being silly here, you have to be very careful out there for your own safety, AND for the safety of your guests or visitors.

If you know your entry gets a lot of ice, prepare for that NOW. If you know your sidewalk (you’re responsible for that) gets icy, go to the Home Depot or someplace similar and get ice melting material. If your driveway is always icy, consider buying snow tires with studs or something similar, to ensure you don’t skid into your bushes, garage door, or neighbor’s car.

Board Meeting: Our first quarter Board Meeting will be held in the Antero Room 28 on January 2020, at 5:30 pm. If you have questions or issues to address, this is the time and place.

The next quarterly meeting of the Villages

Board of Directors will be

Tuesday, january 28, 2019,

at 5:30 pm in the antero room.

SKILL. An association is a business. So having board members with accounting, organizational behavior and team building backgrounds can help. Someone with a financial background, for example, might make for a good treasurer.

The ideal board comprises a mix of management styles, professional skills and temperaments. If you know people with some of these traits or relevant skills, ask them if they’d be interested in joining the board. Some people don’t think about running for a seat unless asked. You don’t have to know everything when you join, but you should be familiar with the governing documents and the responsibilities of the job. Fellow board members and managers can help you with the transition and train you on board responsibilities, current work, projects and hot issues. Leaders can come from different places and backgrounds. There’s no one mode that fits all. Share your knowledge and passion with the community.

Traits of Good Board MembersDo you have what it takes to be a good board member? Chances are you do.

SNOW LINE: 303-343-3063: RECORDING ABOUT THE SNOW PUSH PROCESS.

If you have a mix of some of the following traits and skills, consider running for a seat on the board. We’d love to have you.

If you’re interested, please contact Diane Langley at [email protected]. She’ll guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Page 7: January 2020 | Edition 217 NEWS · 2020-01-29 · WE NEED YOU! 2020 Master Board of Directors Election – Looking for Candidates! Interested Candidates: The 2020 election for two

The operating results (subject to audit) for October 2019 YTD are complete. The net result is

unfavorable to the operating budget by $123,600 due almost entirely to the large number of snow pushes incurred earlier this year. All other operating expenses are less than, or within, the 2019 budget parameters. Year to date reserve expenses are slightly over budget due a large number of insurance deductible reimbursements as a result of hail storms earlier this year. So far this year we have approved 13 reimbursements for homeowners which has saved the association over $200,000 in future roof replacement costs.

Snow Push Operations For those that do not know it, our snow push process has changed, and the operation is 4 phased so to speak. We hope that BrightView’s new plow equipment will streamline how we deliver snow movement for Traditions. First the Boss “DragPro” (rear pick-up truck mounted) plow will “pull” about a 10-12 foot swath of snow from garage door to the street. Second, Boss “SnowRator” stand on plows will trim snow from outside that swath cleared and push to the sides of your driveway. Third, the shovel personnel will clean up walkways and porches. Fourth and finally, the “Bobcat steer skids” will move the snow from the street to the tree-line portion of your lawn above the curb (do not confuse this phase with the OB Sports street clearing). As mentioned above, the process is “phased” so keep in mind that time between each phase will occur. In other words, do not expect each phase to immediately follow the other. Each phase will be completed in good time but not all at the same time. Your board is not aware of those Traditions properties with “revised” driveway or walkway surfaces. Any concern with potential damage to surfaces with snow push equipment is the responsibility of the homeowner and requires board notification.

2020 Paint Project Homeowners on E. Canyon Place (Aurora Parkway side), Addison Way, Biloxi Ct. (HEB North) are scheduled for 2020. Please watch for emails regarding the painting process and flashing of wooden drip/splash boards. Wooden drip boards are only on homes with stone. The contract for both painting and flashing of wooden drip boards is with the same company, Executive Coatings and Construction (ECC). Flashing will be done before painting and usually starts in late April, weather permitting. E. Canyon Place (Aurora Parkway side) will be done first. Then the crew will move on to Addison Way and Biloxi Ct. Any questions, email Jane Harris TEB Board Director for Painting and Drip/Splash board repairs at [email protected]; phone is 720-328-5762.

Ad Hoc Committee This committee is working on obtaining a concrete contactor that will, on a group basis, revise front porch design from a safety standpoint. If your home is one that has what you consider to be dangerous steps at your front door, email [email protected]. If you have already notified us either yes or no, please do not send an email again. We have you on file and will keep you apprised on the project.

Family brought Peter and Joan Livshin from

upstate New York to HEB more than three years ago. Our community had everything Joan and Peter were looking for and they have been very happy with their choice. The CAL program is likewise happy they are here. Peter and Joan became enthusiastic CAL class participants and very quickly took on the challenge of facilitating classes themselves.

Peter has teaching in his blood. In his career he served as a teacher, a principal at the secondary level, and as a school system superintendent. A history nut, a sports fan, and a movie buff, Peter has drawn on these passions to facilitate a diverse selection of courses. These include a history of the watershed year 1968, Sports Forum with Fred Calhoun, and a retrospective of the work of Humphrey Bogart. Peter recently took on the role as Facilitator Lead for CAL. He describes his mission as making facilitating a CAL class easier for others. Peter wants current and potential CAL facilitators to know he is always available and willing to take on difficult problems. He says that after being a principal, nothing at HEB is likely to faze him.

For Joan, CAL was an important factor in choosing HEB.

While not a history buff like Peter, she says there is something for everyone and CAL classes are a great way to meet neighbors with similar interests. Perhaps aided by her background in mathematics, Joan quickly learned the basics of Mah Jongg in a CAL class and has gone on to help others find joy in the game. She also contributed to the Royal Weddings class in Spring 2018. In her most challenging undertaking for CAL. Joan has twice facilitated the class, “How to Help Those Who Are Grieving.” She says it is a difficult topic, but an important one. We can all learn to be more effective in giving support to those around us who have recently suffered a loss.

CAL is very fortunate to have people like Joan and Peter who contribute their knowledge, experience and time to keep the program alive and vibrant. Perhaps Joan put it best with the observation, “The best thing about CAL is that is comes from the residents themselves.”

What’s YOUR Passion? Suggest classes you want offered or consider creating a CAL class. It’s fun, you’ll get all the support you need, and you’ll find other people at H-E-B who love what you love.

Monday Night Fun Group

Snow, snow, go away, we want to play golf today. I hope everyone had a great holiday season with family and friends. Holiday food was great, and some of the liquid was not all that bad either. Personally, I think I am going to have

to walk the first several rounds of 2020 to get rid of some excess gross tonage. Our normal starting Monday Night Fun Group seems light years away but I know in Denver, there is always a day or two during the winter months where we can get out and hit the old white and/or orange ball to hone our skills. For our new residents, MFG plays a 4 person 9 hole scramble perfect for players of all levels. After golf we enjoy a delicious buffet. We try to pair our players each week with different participants so everyone has an opportunity to meet new people in a fun setting. Again, perfect for those new to the 'hood, and/or those that have not played for awhile. Enjoy the rest of the winter, ski great, and we will see you on the links as soon as possible.

Friends of HEB by Carol Larsen

It is with regret that we announce the disbanding of our organization. We have been a part of HEB for 18 years, first as the Angels and then as the Friends. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years and given most of it to various organizations within HEB and gifted many things to the clubhouse and the community.

We can be very proud of our past and current members who volunteered in so many ways in the community. We thank you all!

We also have to thank the many people who aren’t members who have helped us with our many projects and fund-raisers over the years. Your help was indispensable for us to be able to do as much as we did. Thank You!

We would like to list a few ways our money was used just since 2014:

At the Veterans Day celebration on November 11, resident Lou Zoghby was presented with a "QUILT OF VALOR" by the Smoky Hill Quilt Club. Presenters were Jan Weber, Vickie Pervich and

Karen Farnham. This was quite an honor for the 95 year old World War II Vet.

Busy Bloomers Garden Committee

December found our Busy Bloomers setting up a beautiful decorated tree in the vestibule of the Heritage Eagle Bend Clubhouse. We also enjoyed our Holiday luncheon at the

Clubhouse: Delicious food, fun and friendship to celebrate the Holiday Season.

The Busy Bloomers will not be having a meeting in January, but we are looking forward to seeing everyone at our February 17th meeting. The topic will include “making improvements with plant selections to help create a thriving outdoor space within Colorado's unique growing environment.”

The Busy Bloomers hope you all had a wonderful and festive holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in February.

If you answered yes and like to sing, consider joining Heritage Voices, the chorale at HEBGC, as we resume our rehearsals around February 12, 2020 for a spring concert. You do not need to audition or be able to read music. Participate with your neighbors who have a similar interest in having fun while singing. We generally rehearse at the clubhouse on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:30 with some scheduling alterations as we get closer to our concert dates. The students of Doug Rudig’s Mixed Media Drawing CAL Class will display their artwork in the Library during the month of January, 2019.

The featured Artists of the month of January, 2020, are the students of Doug Rudig’s CAL class, displaying their versions of Monet’s Waterlilies.

Based on The Truth of Nature, the most comprehensive U.S. exhibition of Claude Monet paintings in decades, now at the Denver Art Museum (Oct. 21 - Feb. 2nd), Doug Rudig was asked by CAL (HEB Center for Active Learning) if he would teach a class. The first two classes (October 9th and 16th) included a power point presentation about Monet’s life and his paintings. In addition, Doug showed steps for each student to paint a “Water Lily Painting,” similar to the kind of “impressionism style” that Monet painted. For the third class, Doug reserved tickets at the Denver Art Museum to visit the Monet Exhibit (with docents) in person.

The people who took this class really enjoyed the experience.

Sheryl Hutchings says, “I thoroughly enjoyed the painting part of the class because I love painting and I have been to Monet’s Gardens. It brought back such good memories. It is a lot of work to arrange for supplies so that that many people can paint together, and Doug’s arrangement of a group excursion to see the Monet exhibit was a great way to experience that wonderful display of the master impressionist’s beautiful work. Thank you, Doug!”

April 16 Underground Railroad by Colson WhiteheadCora, a young slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia, eagerly seizes the change to escape on the Underground Railroad. She escapes with Caesar through a secret network of actual tracks and tunnels beneath Southern soil. The Underground Railroad is both the gripping tale of one woman’s well to escape the horrors of bondage and a powerful meditation on the history we all share. Fiction

Everyone is welcome.

And Earlaine Worel comments, “Doug's Claude Monet class was the perfect combination of experiences, in a short time period. We met for two classes, where we dabbled in painting a Lily Pond, using the Monet impressionist method. We also learned of Monet's life, struggling to introduce the very different method of impressionism versus realism. The culmination activity was to travel to the Denver Art Museum to see 120 of Claude Monet's paintings. I enjoyed the experience very much.”

Doug’s background included being an educator (Teacher, Principal, & Superintendent of Schools) and being a professional artist (worked with 11 National Parks and Monuments and personal art projects).

So please enjoy the waterlily paintings in the HEB Library.

HEBGC Art News by Audrey Ledgerwood

We are so happy to be back in our Art Room! Our painting group, “Watercolor and Beyond”, decorated our Christmas Tree with our Christmas cards as

we have every year. And some of the paintings displayed are the original paintings for the cards as well as other winter and Christmas paintings. And now that the Library is complete with twice as much space for Art work, our paintings are displayed there as well.

Our project for December was to create lighted Christmas Trees with Rhinestone and other jewelry. Pat Powell led the project as well as inspiring us with her original piece. And she provided much of the materials and tools to create them at her home. You’ll see some of the results in the photos.

We met to plan projects and displays for 2020 in early December. One or two members of our group teach a lesson or share something they have learned in a workshop with all of us on the first Monday of each month. We planned several months of our first Monday projects. And we will be continuing our Visiting Artist Program of workshops in the coming year as well. We also have themes for each month’s art display and we selected those for the year. They challenge us to have new ideas and to create new paintings that depict the theme. The Theme for January is “Hidden Memories”, so stop in to see what we’ve created.

Art is alive and well at HEB. If you’re interested in creating art with us, the contact information is listed in the Newsletter.

Happy new year!

Removing Snow from Your Driveway by William Weinstein MD, Emergency Preparedness Committee HEBGCWithin the community, plowing the streets and sidewalks is the responsibility of the HOA with priority given to emergency streets. Other streets are done next followed by HEBGC contracts.

When it comes to driveway snow removal, without a contract, the following are safe snow shoveling tips:

1. Sunshine may be helpful in snow removal, especially if you have a south facing driveway, if you can hold off for a day or two.

2. Shoveling can be a dangerous activity, especially if you are sedentary, smoke, have hypertension, are overweight or have a heart condition.

3. Don’t shovel after smoking, eating a heavy meal or drinking caffeine.4. Start slowly, ideally use ergonomic snow shovels with curved handles and, especially if snow is heavy,

consider spraying the blade with a lubricant to help the snow slide off.5. Wear layered clothing, a hat, mittens (or warm gloves) and nonskid boots.6. Push the snow rather than lifting it. Don’t throw the snow over your shoulder; walk it over.7. Hold the shovel close to your body with your feet at hip width.8. Bend your knees and space your hands apart for leverage.9. Consider splurging and buying yourself a snow blower.10. Consider hiring a professional snow removal service and relax!

Happy New Year. It has been a wonderful 2019 and looking forward to an exciting 2020 in the HEB pickleball community. Although the weather has not been cooperating

with play on the courts in HEB members utilize facilities at the Parker Tennis Club as well as the Parker Fieldhouse to keep in shape. As promised in last month’s newsletter I am happy to report on the tournament recap. In 2019 thirteen members of the HEB Pickleball club took part in eight tournaments in three different states for a total of thirty-two awards consisting of eighteen gold, ten silver, and 4 bronze medals. Congrats to all of you, we know who you are and what a great representation of HEB to the pickleball community as a whole you have been. Looking forward to continued success next year. In 2020 we will have the use of a new Pickleball Tutor ball machine, thanks to a generous donation from The Friends of HEB. Information on storage and use of the new Ball Machine will be coming in future articles.

WGA Annual Luncheon by Jan Place

Wow, can you believe we are in January 2020? December blew by. The WGA holiday party was a blast held at Linda Schippers house. There were lots

of goodies, libations, and laughter. Gift cards were collected to support the Gathering Place.

A new change is coming this year in the pro shop. A new premier program, “Golf Genius“, has been installed by our Pro, Jason Franke. This will make us more mobile friendly and we will not need the signup books anymore. We can do it all online. The membership directory will be updated throughout the year. We can sign up for league play plus we can find the game of the week. The WGA Board and committee members watched a demo by Jason at the last Board meeting and asked questions and are thinking through some of the details. At the March kickoff, we will be able to register you on the spot. There will be computers and ladies to help with the registration. A new GHIN handicap system was introduced to the board and committee members which should be launched in March 2020. These changes will affect worldwide index calculations, not just the USGA. The current index system was determined once a golfer completed five full rounds of golf. The new system only requires three rounds of golf or 54 holes. The new GHIN will be calculated and revised every day as opposed to only on the 1st and 15th of each month. To have an accurate GHIN, we will post scores daily for regular play or the pro shop will post for league play. For a two day tournament the most current GHIN index on day one of the tournament will be used for the full tournament. The system will now take into consideration abnormal weather conditions by region

and course. The captains for the interclub team play will use the current handicap on the day of submitting their player roster. Max equitable scores for each hole will be par plus two strokes plus individual allotted strokes. EXAMPLE: On a Par 5 hole, a player with a 30 handicap will be given 2 strokes. The highest score posted will be a 9 (Par 5 + 2 strokes + 2 strokes popped on the card. *NOTE: For all play, the actual score must be written on the score card since that affects the weekly game results / winners. If you take a 10, you write a 10 on your score card. Do not write the equitable score. That is figured later for posting. The member /guest committee has met and has come up with a theme; we are going on a Safari. The theme is “It’s a jungle out there”. The committee chair will again be our fearless leader, Shirley Gillespie. Her tribe is Lori Schmidt, Linda Schippers, Gail Interwish, Debby Poole, Debbie Mascis, Jan Place, Carol McMann, Christy Bodaness, and Annette Salvata. The date for the member/guest is July 21st. More information will be announced as we get closer to July. Right now you have time to think about your outfit for a Safari and whom you would like to play with.

For Tuesday league play, we are thinking of going with a pre-ordering system for lunch. Elmir loves the idea. This will make it more efficient for us and his kitchen. The board is working out the kinks with Elmir so it will run smoothly.

Wow, that is a lot of new news to digest. We will work together and get through it together.

They are allowed to visit for a time up to 6 weeks in a row and not more than 90 total days in a year.

It is never a pleasant situation when this is reported and has to be dealt with.

We ask that you understand this for the sake of the other residents who moved to

an age-restricted community as a choice.

THANK YOU.
