WCA BULLETIN BOARD / VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

WHAT ISWOODCREEK?If you ask people in our area where they live, they say Woodlands or Woodbine. So where does Woodcreek come from? A little history lesson will give you the answer.

Woodlands was established in 1976 and Woodbine 4 years later in 1980. The Woodlands Community As-sociation was incorporated on May 21, 1980, and two years later the Woodbine Community Association was registered on October 19, 1982. In order to better serve the needs of the area, the Woodlands and Woodbine Communities amalgamated on January 29, 1992 and the Community Association name was changed to Woodcreek Community Association and represents the 15,399 residents of both communities. In 1987 a Community Centre building (approximately 1000 sq. Ft.) was built at 1991 Woodview Drive S. W. In 2010 we added a 2500 sq. ft. addition with a full basement. We now have a facility that can better serve the needs of the community and provide a venue for meetings, ban-quets, dances, birthday parties, you name it. A portion of the basement area provides storage for our commu-nity groups, and also has three meeting rooms suitable for smaller events and programs.

So when you hear the name WOODCREEK think both of the communities.

A further point is that Woodcreek does have two prop-erties. Our main location is the Community Centre in Woodlands. We also have a Woodbine location on Woodborough Road where we have tennis courts, pickle ball courts, basketball hoop, skating rink, a skate board park and a full basketball court. These are all part of the Woodcreek Community Association.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE HALL

Woodcreek Community Association (WCA) held its 8th annual Woodcreek Craft Sale on November 10, 2018. Each year, many applications from the Woodcreek area and the surrounding communities are submitted for the 25 available spaces. Among the diverse and qual-ity selection of crafts, 15 of the 25 vendors are residents of the Woodcreek community. Each of the Craft Sale vendors contributed to the success and atmosphere of the sale by donating a crafted item for a door prize. Their generosity and craft skills are appreciated by the WCA and customers.

Among the 25 vendors, there were two returning ven-dors from the Woodcreek Seniors group – Baking, and Knitting/Crocheting. Both of these vendors donate their sales proceeds either to charity/organizations or are used to fund activities for the Woodcreek Seniors.

The Seniors’ baking tables had a wide assortment of baked goods, which are made and donated by the Se-niors’ membership of 70 active members. The Seniors’ baking skills and sales have resulted in donations to two charitable organizations; Salvation Army ($500.00), and South West Community Resource Center – Oakridge ($400.00).

The Woodcreek Seniors’ Knitting Group has a member-ship of 16 ladies who produced a large variety of knit-ted and crocheted items in the past year. Many yarn and wool donations have been received from the com-munity, and members often contribute materials from their own supplies for the sale items. Thanks to the community and members’ donations and work, the Se-niors’ Knitting Group has donated to two local organiza-tions; Woodlands Elementary School ($750.00), and 401 Woodcreek Scouts ($750.00).

The 401 Woodcreek Scouts Group and Leaders provided the kitchen duty and a variety of refreshments such as coffee, drinks, snacks, chili, and hot dogs for vendors and customers. Their participation in the sale is one of the several fundraisers for supporting their activities during the year. One of their 2019 major activities is at-tending the Scouts’ Pacific Jamboree on Vancouver Is-land in July 2019. Watch for their next fundraiser in early January 2019 – their largest annual bottle drive.

Two Seniors’ knitting members again demonstrated their “public art” skills which is more commonly called “yarn bombing.” Trees, a bench, and a candy cane pole were among the recipients of their colourful creations to brighten the fall season for the craft sale. Several decorations were hung in the evergreen trees, and pom-poms were strung along the eavestroughs of the building. Their efforts often bring a smile to those who view their work.

Thank you to the community for your support and great turnout.

MARK your 2019 calendar for our 9th Annual Craft Sale – NOVEMBER 2, 2019 and see you there!

WoodcreekCraft Sale Woodcreek

Crime PreventionGood day to everyone and Happy New Year! My name is Sean Sali and I am pleased to introduce myself to the residents of Woodcreek as your Woodcreek CA Police Li-aison. With each issue of the Chronicle moving forward, I plan to offer suggestions on how we as a community can come together to reduce instances of criminal activ-ity that take place in our neighbourhoods.

We are fortunate to have such a peaceful community here in the southwest, but we aren’t immune to theft. Leaving garage or vehicle doors unlocked overnight makes it incredibly easy for individuals to steal valu-ables, personal information, or even door-openers that can access the home later. Cars parked outside should have any door-openers and registrations brought inside. With these practices we are provided an opportunity to help out our neighbours who may have forgotten to close their garage doors as well, which they’ll no doubt appreciate!

Once in a blue moon

Meaning: The phrase refers to something that happens very infrequently.

Origins: Confusingly, a blue moon doesn’t refer to the actual colour of the moon; it re-fers to when we see a full moon twice in one month. This happens every two to three years.

Half of North American adults typically make New Year resolutions. About 22% will fail after a week, 40% after a month, 50% after three months, 60% after six months, and 81% after two years. Kudos to you, 19%!

Used Paperbacks for Sale50 cents

To raise funds for their activities, the seniors have a rapidly-growing book collection with a good selection of gently used novels for 50 cents each.

Donations have been appreciated, but we have enough books for now.

Please no more books at this time. Thank you.

Woodcreek Seniors’ BridgeThe Senior’s Bridge Group meets every Tues-day between September and May in the Community Centre. We have about 65 peo-ple registered, and typically have anywhere from 6 to 11 tables on any given Tuesday.

The bridge play is mainly SOCIAL, i.e. the skills range from amateur to skilled players who may play duplicate bridge elsewhere. Conventions played depend on your part-ner in any round. These range from the typi-cal Standard American, to “I play my hand”. We are not that able to teach players who want to learn but can point to resources to get the basics before playing. We can ac-commodate players who know the game but have not played any serious bridge ever. Since the players range in skill level, we make certain that we operate with “only of-fer advice when solicited.”

We play 5 rounds of four hands, with a time limit to finish each round within 30 min-utes. The typical layout is to start at a table with the winners moving to the next table and changing partners. Thus, the same two people never play together more than once.

There is a charge of $2 for the day and the money goes towards prizes, supplies and Christmas & Year-End lunches.

Should you have any questions feel free to contact Ken Barrie at (403) 281-5556.

We had a very successful WCA Craft Sale (November 10, 2018), from the sale of handmade items that were made from previous donations. Thank you to Community members as your continued generosity of yarn dona-tions makes our charity donations possible.

Yarn and wool donations can be left at the WCA office during office hours. Office hours are: Monday 1 - 9:00 p.m., Tuesday to Friday 1-5:00 p.m. The Seniors’ Knitting group meets MONDAY afternoon 1-3 p.m. in the main hall of the community centre. Please do not leave bags outside by the WCA door.

BOTTLE DRIVE JANUARY 6 – SATURDAY

We hope you all had a safe and happy Christmas season and are ready for the shiny New Year ahead.

Thank you to all that bought a Christmas tree from the tree lot at Safeway. We have 18 Scouts that will be at-tending the Pacific Jamboree this summer, and this was one of their fund-raising activities. Last month, I started to write about the Jamboree and now I would like to add to that with some of the activities that will be avail-able for the Scouts to do. The activities will be called ‘Adventures’ and will take advantage of the natural fa-cilities at Camp Barnard and the facilities throughout the nearby communities of Greater Victoria. Jamboree activities will promote personal challenge and team-work. The many adventures that the Scouts can choose to do are natural face rock climbing, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, obstacle courses through the trees, logger sports, dragon boat racing, discovering down-town Victoria, exploring the town of Sooke and many daytime and evening activities, badge trading places and souvenir stores. Please watch for other fund raiser activities that will be held around the community and if you can support them in any way it would be appreci-ated. If you have any fund-raising ideas for them, please feel free to call our Group Commissioner Tim Tratch at 403-251-4878.

We would like to extend a big thank you to the Wood-creek seniors knitting club as they donated money towards the Scouts group trip to attend the Pacific Jam-boree. The Scouts need to raise 1/3 of the cost them-selves so this is very much appreciated.

Our bottle drive will be held on January 6th at the Woodcreek Community Centre. You can also drop off your bottles at the community hall that morning. We also have an account set up at Tsuu T’ina Bottle Depot under the name ‘Woodcreek Scouts’ if you prefer to help us in that way.

The Cubs have been busy at the Calgary Archery Cen-tre, and the beavers had a great time at the Bridlewood firehall. Here are a few pictures of the fun times.

All the Groups will be hard at work on their Beaver bug-gies, Kub Kars and Scout Trucks over the holidays. I will tell you more about those next month so stay tuned.

There are still a few spaces in our Group if you’re in-terested in getting your kids involved in our program. Please call Tim at the above number at any time for more information. Thank you to the local Lions Club and the Woodcreek Community Center for their ongoing sup-port to our Group. We appreciate you very, very much.

The Jobber’s House project at the Bow Valley Ranch

Help the Friends raise $500,000 to renovate and repur-pose the Jobber’s House! The Jobber’s House at the Bow Valley Ranch in Fish Creek has been part of the charm of this area for three generations, and community members constantly tell us how much the building means to them.

We are proposing to take over and renovate and repur-pose the Jobber’s House to enhance and expand our educational activities, host community outreach activ-ities, meetings, and year-round wellness activities, real-ize countless other possibilities, and ensure the survival of this piece of Calgary’s history. We are planning to turn the Jobber’s House at the Bow Valley Ranch into a truly useful space that will benefit the park and community members for generations to come. Special thanks to the Alberta Real Estate Foundation for supporting the Jobber’s House project.

To whom it may concern,

The Federation of Calgary Communities (the Federation) is the support organization to over 230 small non-profit organiza-tions, including Calgary’s 151 community associations. These 151 volunteer-run organizations positively impact the life of Calgarians every day by offering endless opportunities close to home, fostering a sense of belonging by bringing neighbours together, and being a voice for community life educating and informing residents on important issues and activities taking place in their neighbourhood.

One of the main tools community associations use to keep their residents informed on what’s going on in the community is their community newsletter. Calgarians have grown to rely on these monthly publications to find news and updates from their community association, City Councillor, provincial MLA, as well as other stakeholders like the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and much more.

Community newsletters not only keep residents informed on important happenings, but they also help foster Calgary’s uniquely small town feel in our large, urban city. These month-ly newsletters have grown to include resident and volunteer profiles, showcasing neighbourhood assets, local business fea-tures, and more. In doing so, community newsletters truly help community associations work towards being hubs for neigh-bourhood life by showcasing the many people and places who make the community a great place to live, work, and play.

For over a decade, community associations have been fortu-nate enough to have their monthly community newsletter published and delivered for free by the publishing company. In recent years, with the economic decline in Calgary, this luxury is now at risk, with community newsletter publishers strug-gling to find advertisers to offset their costs, and Canada Post’s delivery fees continually rising.

The Federation of Calgary Communities believes that commu-nity newsletters are essential to community life here in Calgary, and we support the value they bring to all Calgarians, organiza-tions, businesses, and the city of Calgary as a whole. Without funding support or reduced delivery fees for community news-letter publishers to continue providing these monthly publica-tions for our city’s community associations at low or no cost, we are at risk of losing these essential resources that connect Calgarians to both their neighbourhood and their city.

Sincerely,Leslie EvansExecutive Director

CALGARY WILDLIFE

There are so many benefits to living in a beautiful city like Calgary. Most residents will agree the easy access to wild spaces is a driver to living here. Greenspaces that can be used year-round allow us to enjoy sharing spaces with the over 400 species of wild animals that live alongside us. Calgarians also get to experience the rare wonder called a Chinook. Warm, dry winds create a mini oasis in the wintertime giving us a much-needed reprieve from the icy-cold of a prairie winter. Have you ever thought about what this might mean for hiber-nating animals? What about animals who experience a torpor through the winter? For most animals that are in-active during the cold winter months, hibernation and torpor are stimulated by several factors; photoperiod (daylight hours), temperature and reduction in avail-able resources to use as food. For those animals that are stimulated to sleep by cold temperatures, warm winters or frequent chinooks can wreak havoc on their yearly schedules.

At the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, we often see this disruption in the form of unseasonably early babies. In animals such as squirrels, being roused too early from their winter homes can stimulate early breed-ing resulting in babies being born when the weather is far too cold to support their survival. Lagomorphs such

as white-tailed jackrabbits, snowshoe hares and moun-tain cottontail rabbits have also been known to have early babies with a low survival rate during winters with fluctuating temperatures. While this may not affect their ability to continue breeding through the late winter and spring, it is surely a huge expenditure of energy to experi-ence an unsuccessful litter of young so early in the year.

We often get questions from the media and the public alike about how climate change is affecting our native wildlife. Its difficult to infer, from a wildlife rehabilita-tion perspective, how populations may be affected by our yearly shifts in climate. We can however expect that there will be changes in the way animals behave as our climate changes, especially when we can see these changes happening with natural weather cycles within our city. When you are out enjoying our outdoor spaces during the next Chinook, look around at the animals sharing those spaces with you. Its worth wondering how climate may be impacting their individual lives.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild bird or animal in distress, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society at 403-214-1312 for tips, instructions and advice, or look at the website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

FOR ARTS’ SAKE

by Aaron Chatha

A new year and a bevy of new theatre to watch!

The biggest event in the arts world this January is un-doubtedly the High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s biggest International Festival of the Arts. Running throughout the month, shows include locally produced pieces, like Live Your Prime, with Damien Frost – a hilari-ous satire about getting old, featuring the award-win-ning John Murrell – or the French absurdist dance and circus show Cow Love, which “mixes haute couture with the sour taste of milk, with a hint of romance.”

Other plays include monologues by a member of Kids in the Hall, Hammered Hamlet and the always popular 10-minute play festival – all part of the Rodeo.

Meanwhile at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the conductor Sarah Hicks is kicking off the New Year with Music of the Movies – a tribute to great film scores and composers. Timeless tunes from Singin’ in the Rain, En-nio Morricone’s Once Upon a Time in the West and – of course – Star Wars will be featured in the set list.

At Theatre Calgary, Rick Miller premieres BOOM X, a one-man, multimedia show taking us through media and pop figures from 1969 through 1995. The produc-tion follows Generation X as they navigate the tangled legacy of the baby boom.

For a uniquely Canadian tale, Café Daughter at Alberta Theatre Projects takes audiences back to 1950s Sas-katchewan, where a half Chinese, half Cree girl struggles to find her place in a small-minded community – until an unexpected ally steps in.

Finally, join The Search for Life Beyond Earth with astro-biologist Kevin Hand in the latest Arts Commons Pres-ents: National Geographic Live series. Hand’s job with NASA is to search for life in the stars, but interestingly, his research begins in the extremes of Earth, in places like Alaska and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Start the new year off with a little art Calgary!

This column is provided by Arts Commons. Located in the heart of Calgary’s vibrant downtown core, Arts commons is home to six different distinct performance venues.

SAFE & SOUND

Toboggan SafetyEmergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to remind parents and children of some basic toboggan/sledding safety tips as the winter season continues. Injuries may result from collisions with stationary objects on the hill, such as trees or rocks, or even collisions with other people. Unprotected falls can also result in more serious injury if you lose control at high speeds. However, every-one can be safe and have fun on the toboggan hill by following these simple reminders.

Equipment•Always ensure your toboggan or sledding device is

in good repair. Inspect it for any damaged or missing parts before each use;•Be certain the operator is fully capable of staying in

control of the sled at all times;•Children should wear a certified, properly fitted helmet

designed for other high impact sports such as hockey, cycling, or climbing.

Hazards•Avoid hills that are too steep or too icy;•Choose hills free of all obstacles such as trees, rocks,

utility poles, or fences; •Beware of loose scarves or clothing containing draw-

strings which could present a strangulation hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Plan ahead •Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes; •Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to

exchange wet garments for dry ones; •Take breaks, out of the cold, to warm up; •Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin; •Even when properly protected from the elements, the

finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek bones can be affected by frostbite; •If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the

individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it, or by placing the affected part in warm, not hot, water, until re-warmed.

Ask Charles

REAL ESTATE COUNCIL OF ALBERTA

I’d like to buy a home; I can afford monthly payments, but I’m working on my credit. I saw an ad for a rent-to-own. Is that something I should consider?

The short answer is maybe. Rent-to-own arrangements sometimes make it easier for someone to buy a home.

A typical rent-to-own is a type of rental arrangement that also contains an option to purchase the property in the future, at a specific point in time, at an agreed-upon price. Rent-to-own contracts give buyers time to save a larger down payment, and time to work on their credit, but there are some risks.

Rent-to-own contracts are very complex. There are many things on which the parties have to agree, for ex-ample:•who arranges and pays for property insurance during

the term of the rental?•who will pay property taxes and/or special assess-

ments during the term of the rental?•can the renter complete renovations or improvements

before purchasing the property?•what happens if the buyer cannot close?•is the accumulated down payment refundable or non-

refundable?

Often rent-to-own contracts will include a base rent for the property as well as an additional monthly payment. Your rent-to-own agreement should stipulate that your additional monthly payment will be held in a trust ac-count until purchase as it will form part of your eventual down payment.

It’s not unusual for there to be clauses in rent-to-own contracts that state if the buyer misses a payment, is late with a rent payment, or chooses to back out of the pur-chase, the property owner is entitled to keep any down payment funds already received. It’s a good idea to talk to a mortgage broker because they can help determine if you will qualify for a mortgage at the purchase price. If they have concerns about your ability to obtain a mort-gage, whether because of your income or your credit, you may not want to proceed.

Something you also need to consider is that property values change constantly. When you enter into a rent-to-own agreement, you agree to purchase the property at a specific price at a point in the future. But there is no guarantee the property will be worth that amount when you go through with the purchase. Are you pre-pared to take on that risk? Likewise, if the property val-ue drops significantly—and your purchase price is too high—it may be difficult to find a lender.

The best advice I can give you is that before signing anything, it’s a good idea to have a lawyer review the contract. While a rent-to-own may make it possible for you to purchase a property, you need to make sure you understand and agree with what you are signing.

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

Interested in Doing a Job that Counts? The City Is Hiring Civic Census Takers! The City’s civic census is conducted annually starting on April 1 and that means census taker recruitment is underway. The City needs flexible workers to help collect this information us-ing mobile tablets.

Census takers are assigned an area to collect census informa-tion; areas vary in size, but are generally between 400 and 600 dwellings. Census takers have three weeks to complete the col-lection in their assigned area. They set their own schedule to get their work done and may be required to work in the eve-nings and weekends when most people are at home. x-filler December 2013 Councillor Colley-Urquhart NEW PHOTO for header

During the week of November 26th, 2018, as one of 15 City Officials, we faced one of the most challenging 4-year budget cycles in my 18 years of public service on Calgary City Council. This time is like no other that we as a City and a Province have been experiencing and face today. I know that Stephen Poloz, Governor of the Bank of Canada, has stated to the Standing Senate Commit-tee on Banking, Trade and Commerce that he had seen “some very positive developments...Canada’s economy is strong.” Not so much in Calgary. Then he raised inter-est rates. Come to Calgary Mr. Poloz. What a compound-ing affect raising interest rates have on not only the new housing market but the stalled real estate market when people are either trying to sell or seek financing to buy. We have the highest unemployment rate in Canada.

With the state of our economy now and well into the next few years, thank heavens Calgary has one of the lowest residential property tax rates in Canada. For both utility charges and property taxes, the cost of living in Calgary remains lower than the average of 11 other Ca-nadian municipalities. Can you imagine how much trou-ble we would be in if that weren’t the case? Having one of the lowest property taxes is no justification to raise them. And your strong levels of satisfaction with service levels can no longer justify tax increases either. We have to eat what we kill and live within our means. This is why I voted against the budget last November.

I’m very pleased with Jeff Fielding’s leadership as our City Manager. We would have been in significantly more trouble had he not pulled over $600M out of our oper-ating budget over the past couple years. We also would have been in additional trouble had he not moved the Corporation to a “One Calgary - Service Based Budget Approach” over the past 18 months as the economy soured. A valuable foundation for sure. But we are only part way there and we can’t justify budget increases for each of the next four years—nor approve a four-year operating budget with so much uncertainty. I could not in all good conscience approve a budget increase like this without looking at every single line of service. Council hasn’t gone through this exercise in over ten years. My motion passed last November to undertake

this thorough review in the coming months. It means getting out of some of the service and programs we of-fer in my view. It means service cuts Calgary. You can’t absorb more tax increases.

Simply put, we must cut costs, cut lines of service, and reduce overall expenditures in major areas. This will ob-viously impact your level of satisfaction, but it was the responsible thing for me to take forward. I was success-ful in being appointed in the Strategic Planning working group of Council to address the 61 lines of services, and which services we should get out of. The majority of you won’t continue to be ‘satisfied’—but the 45% if you who don’t want increases will be ‘more satisfied’.
