President’s MessageHappy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and wonderful holiday season.

As you all know, we’ve concluded our bi-annual officer elections and I want to say thank you to all of you who

participated. We had great voter turn-out and some outstanding candidates to choose from for office positions. You will be able to learn more about the election results later in this newsletter. I look forward to their leadership as we continue to grow the association and serve the membership.

The last two months have been busy ones for the Executive Council. Following the Fall Meeting in late October, Brian Murphy and Craig Voll resigned their positions on the Council. Both have served in several roles during their tenure and have provided great leadership. I want to publicly thank both for their dedication to the association. At our November EC meeting, we approved Jim Miller from Boonville as the new Governmental Affairs Chair replacing Craig and Kyle Stairs from Indianapolis to replace Brian as the Development Committee Chair. Both have been part of these respective committees previously and I know we’ll have a seamless transition. Also in November, the Council approved Tim Nurrenburn from Evansville replacing Jim as the High School Committee Chair. Tim brings a lot of energy and experience to the committee.

At our last EC meeting in December, we approved Gerald Mickler, Carl Palma, and Nicole DeStefano as members of our new National Athletic Trainers Month Committee. Look for additional information on association events from this group coming soon. Our last order of business in December was approval of our 5-year Strategic Plan in its final form. • The IATA is awarded a Class II Dan Campbell Legislative Award in recognition for its work during the 2013 legislative session. The IATA successfully lobbied to have athletic training removed from the ERASER bill that was proposed to reduce and streamline the licensure of regulated professions. Athletic training was reviewed by a previous governmental committee (ROEC) in 2012 with recommendations to keep our licensure process intact.

• Franklin College Athletic Training Program once again wins the IATA Student Pop Tab contest by collecting 164 pounds of pop tabs. The contest is a fund raiser benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Indiana is one of nine (9) states that submit and one of three (3) selected to participate (Wisconsin and Ohio are the others). Factors cited in the selection include a favorable practice act, successful third-party reimbursement legislation, an overall strong and healthy association, and an active membership.

High School Setting Research

Note to Membership: This feature article expresses the opinion of the author. The article does not represent the opinions of the IATA Executive Board, the IATA, or its membership.

In the high school setting, many athletic trainers indicate a feeling of isolation from the rest of the athletic training and medical profession. Athletic trainers may go months without seeing another medical professional. Many times there is only one certified athletic trainer at a high school. Even if there are two athletic trainers, they usually don’t see each other much as they are often covering different events.

Ending this feeling of isolation will not be easy. Building a professional learning network is key. Twitter or other social media are great ways to connect with others in our profession. To follow the IATA and connect with other trainers around the state follow @INathletic on twitter. Others are @BOCATC and @NATA1950. This is also a great way to stay up to date with our profession. What interest would there be to start a monthly or weekly twitter chat on various topics involving our profession at the high school level? If you are interested in participating in and/or moderating a twitter chat contact me (Tim Nurrenbern) at [email protected]. If there is enough interest, I will work on getting one started!

Another way to help end the isolation is to cultivate a good working relationship with the school nurse. She is isolated from other medical professionals just as we are. We must work together to provide the best possible care for the students and athletes at your school. The school nurse can be a great promoter of our profession. Often times athletes that are injured might seek help from the nurse instead of the athletic trainer especially if the athletic trainer is not available. Communication is key. Work as a team to keep athletes on the playing field.

Connecting with other athletic trainers across the state and country is much easier today with all the technology available. Take advantage of what is out there and end the isolation.

Research Article by Jenny Brennan

Note to Membership: This feature article expresses the opinion of the author. The article does not represent the opinions of the IATA Executive Board, the IATA, or its membership.

I read a great article in Sports Health describing “Extra- Articular Mimickers of Lateral Meniscal Tears”. Many of us probably encounter this on a year round basis with our athletes regardless of the setting you may be working in, and it is important not to rush to conclusions or be quick to think arthroscopic surgery. This article outlines some quick symptomology to help differentiate between pathologies.

Extra-Articular Mimickers of Lateral Meniscal TearsJoseph U Barker, MD, Eric J Strauss, MD, Sameer Lodha, MD, and Bernard R Bach, Jr, MD

Arthroscopic surgery of the menisci is fast becoming one of the most common orthopedic surgeries in the US. As lateral meniscus tears lead the list of differential diagnoses for lateral knee symptomology, many other culprits can be to blame. To name a few of the most prominent causes of lateral knee pain and swelling, the list includes ITB syndrome, snapping popliteus tendon or biceps femoris tendon, proximal tibiofibular joint instability, or peroneal nerve compression.

Indiana Athletic Trainers Association

12

Illiotibial Band Syndrome: This is the most common source of lateral knee pain and typically presents as localized pain over the lateral femoral epicondyle. Common presentation is insidious onset of pain with repetitive flexion and extension of the knee joint typically several minutes into activity and continuing post activity. Findings indicate recurrence of pain with SLS at 30 degrees of knee flexion, positive Ober’s test as well as possible leg length discrepancy, forefoot varus, or high knee Q angles.

Proximal Tibiofibular Joint Instability: Rare and typically confused with posterolateral instability, instability of this joint often presents post idiopathic subluxation or as an acute traumatic dislocation and is most often seen in patients with a past medical history or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or general ligamentous laxity. More prevalent in females and often a bilateral condition, patients report lateral knee popping, clicking and catching as well as tenderness over the fibular head.

Snapping Biceps Femoris and Popliteus Tendons: Origins of a snapping biceps femoris tendon are found to reside in patients with anomalies of the tendon’s insertion on the fibula or an abnormal prominence of the fibular head and can be resolved with surgery. Likewise abnormalities of the femoral condyle can lead to symptomatic snapping of the popliteus tendon with knee flexion. Performing a Cabot test can help determine if this is the culprit of lateral knee pain. This is rare and often related to a traumatic event.

Peroneal Nerve Compression: Neuritis often presents as focal knee pain over the fibular head and can radiate symptoms into the distribution of the peroneal nerve. Findings include a positive Tinel sign over the fibular neck, weakness with ankle dorsiflexion and eversion and/or toe extension, possible sensory changes following the distribution of the peroneal nerve, and possible gait changes. Symptoms can also arise from direct trauma to area, increased low leg musculature, exertional compartment syndrome, or a stretch injury from forceful inversion or plantarflexion at the ankle.
