ourRector’s MessageThe star announcing the birth of the Christ Child shines throughout the season of Epiphany. We witness the power of God in the life of Jesus, and see the glory of the only Son of God manifest in many Gospel stories, until, finally, we are dazzled on the Mount of Transfiguration.

We spent much of the past centennial year looking back at the light of Christ shining in our history. This gave us many opportunities to give thanks for the saints who preceded us. Our heritage shines brightly indeed.

One of the striking qualities of our spiritual forebears was how they followed the star of God’s inspiration. This is especially true during the seasons of our history that seem to best define who we are. For instance, earlier members left the original comfortable church building and made a new home here, at Dolores and Ninth, in a structure that was uniquely beautiful and a little daring.

As the magi were profoundly changed by their journey and devotions before the infant savior, so our spiritual predecessors were transformed

from a church congregation into a parish with several missions. Like the wise ones, they looked toward God’s horizon and moved beyond their new home, to establish St. Mathias, St. Dunstan’s, a school, a campground and outdoor chapel, Epiphany, and more. We continued to follow that same star last year, with the creation of the Center for Christian Transformation.

To help members look upward to the horizon of God’s purpose, the vestry is creating a Parish Mission Council, so that the church and its five missions can discover ways to support each other and to share resources. Facing outward as a parish, we also look beyond ourselves to the world for which the Son of God was born in Bethlehem.

We rejoice that the light of Christ radiates in the heartfelt welcome visitors and new members experience among us. members. The light of hope spreads as we care for each other and reach out to those who are hungry.

We are grateful that God sets a star over All Saints’ Church. During a time when the Episcopal Church and other mainline denominations are losing members, we grew seventeen percent in the past two years. Attendance at our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services was the highest since 2005. By God’s grace, the New Year will shine brightly as we welcome more people of all ages into our fellowship of love and Christian formation.

I am eager to follow the star God is setting before us, even as I am made breathless by the boldness of God’s imagination and humbled by our need for God’s grace. I trust that you are also grateful, eager, and humbled, as together we follow the star, as did the saints who went before us.

Administration

by Greg Troxell

As we enter 2013 we will continue to refine our processes, improve our facilities and increase communication.

Considering that until three years ago the church relied wholly on the monthly newsletter, bulletin boards and a few announcements for Sunday visitors - we've come a long way. In the last three years we have launched and redesigned the church website, we redesigned the Patter in February 2012 and added new features and order to improve communication. We created connections and followers on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and began to dabble on Youtube. We added email news that goes out to over 300 parishioners, as well as seasonal and event banners on the front of the church and increased our newspaper and chamber advertising.

The feedback for the proposed change from a monthly newsletter to a periodic liturgically based magazine brought a good amount of praise and appreciation. One suggestion was that we also create a separate Sunday handout for announcements and events since many people seem to recycle their Sunday bulletins. All in all, this change would not reduce communication but enhance it by adding more theologically based articles to build your faith. As a staff we are targeting the first issue to come out in time for Easter. Much work is yet to be done in designing the publication, opinions are always welcome.

Over the Christmas week Clint Bayly and member, Jay Hunter, removed the roots from the drain line in front of the office causing the puddle. Last month we began chilling the tulips for Easter, replanted the gardens on Lincoln, and finished the pathway on Dolores. In the first quarter we plan to replace the bench in the front of the church, replace the disintegrating retaining wall around the large oak tree next to the garden steps, finish repainting Grant Hall, and replace the youth room doors.

Thank You

• We give thanks for the time, talents, and treasures of every one who participated in our holiday services during December. Especially the musicians, choir, altar guild, ushers, acolytes, readers, dramatists, Eucharistic ministers, and hosts who all willingly gave of their time and helped make Christmas so special.

• For all who made a donation for the Christmas flowers.

• Susan Britton and more than twenty members who participated in the greening of the church.

• Claudia Ward, Sheila Camacho, Diane DeBerry, Jennifer Evans, and other school families for helping with the St. Nicholas Celebration.

• All who donated to the Christmas gifts and who assembled the Christmas food boxes.

• For Jay Hunter, Sameera Sharif and Clint Bayly and their handiwork and service over the Christmas season.

• For the office volunteers who welcomed and assisted our members and guests.

• We thank the Rev. Gwen Buehrens for editing the January Patter.

Members who are business owners are able to place an ad in the Patter and on our website. The current monthly price for display in both is just $100. Please contact Greg Troxell in the church office for specs or send an email to gtroxell@allsaintscarmel for more information.

our WorshipBaptism: The feast of the Baptism of Our Lord takes place on January 13 this year, and at the 10:30 a.m. service we’ll be privileged to baptize the children of one of our new families.

The occasion provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the beautiful symbolism of our newly restored baptistry.

Pools of color: You will notice how the baptistry’s clear and colored glass looks a lot like the surface of water, with pools of light created by the sun. As we stand inside the baptistry, our perspective is one of being underwater. The colors from the surface of the water pass through and strike the floor or—if you will—the bottom of the river.

The walls and floor: The walls and floor enhance our sense of being underwater, especially as they are painted a blue-green color. As Jesus was submerged and held under water at his baptism, so in baptism we participate in his death. The colors moving with the sun, and passing across the floor and up the wall, creates a sense of moving water.

A rainbow: The colors not only suggest light reflected under water, they also remind us of the great rainbow of Noah. The bow in the sky was God’s covenant to sustain life for all time. The rainbow in the baptistry speaks of God’s promise to Noah, but even more powerfully proclaims Jesus’ resurrection. The two covenants overlap when the colored light illuminates the resurrection figure in the Mark Adams tapestry.

The Resurrection Tapestry: The tapestry rounds out the features of the baptistry. It’s almost as if the baptistry, designed by Mr. Adams in the1960s, was waiting all these years for his tapestry to be hung on the north wall. For the symbolism of dying with Christ in baptism is now complemented by the image of resurrection. Jesus was submerged in baptism and then resurfaced to breathe again. His emergence from the waters of baptism prefigured his emergence from the

tomb at Easter.

The baptistry as a separate space: Finally, the baptistry is clearly a separate feature, having been added in memory of Polly C. Firestone about fifteen years after the church was constructed. After his baptism, Jesus turned his back on the river, gathered followers, and began his earthly ministry; likewise, after our baptism, we leave the River Jordan, and immediately enter into the life of

the community. This is enacted as the baptized step into the nave and immediately participate in Holy Communion. Then, as part of the anointed, they are sent into the world to bring God’s message to all people.

The feast of Jesus’ baptism takes place on the first Sunday after the Epiphany, and the remaining Sundays of this season tell the story of the Light of Christ shining in powerful ways. We will enjoy the baptistry through Epiphany, but during Lent the tapestry will be taken away to be cleaned. During Easter we will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony through the Chamber of Commerce to give thanks for both the baptistry and the tapestry, and for Mark Adams, whose faith and artistic expression brings to life the meaning of baptism. Furthermore, the E. Mark Adams and Beth Van Hoesen Adams Trust also generously donated a rose window designed by Mr. Adams, and we hope to display the window panels during the season of Epiphany.

Bose Speaker

Have you noticed that The Band sounds even better over the past few weeks? The Band has a new audio system: a Bose L1 powered speaker! This new audio system allows the guitars to sound more true, using technology that was designed for spaces like ours where the stage is barely higher than the congregation. The Band plays for the 10:30 service each week, and we are extremely happy to be producing a better quality sound with our new Bose speaker.

Worship: We glorify Christ by enacting liturgies steeped in beauty,

mystery, and creativity that refresh like

springs of living water.

our Community

Newcomer Gathering

Our reputation for being warm and welcoming comes from the love that flows through this community. It is not so much our kindness, as it is the love of Christ overflowing from the chalice. It is his love that attracts visitors and prospective members. Each of us carries out this ministry of hospitality as we greet tourists and welcome newcomers. In addition to this natural—and supernatu-ral—hospitality, the church has a more formal program of greeting and incorporating new members.

As of January 1, Fr. Rick is temporarily orga-nizing this ministry, while the vestry looks for a new coordinator to replace the retiring Bon-nie Bufkin.

All newcomers and prospective members are invited to a reception on Tuesday, January 15, at 7:00 p.m. We look forward to getting better acquainted as we help you learn more about All Saints’.

Walking in This World

Are you an artist, photographer, painter, writer, musician who apprehensive or even afraid to create the beauty you really yearn for? Come and join this three month adventure beginning on February 18, 2013.

This three-month journey is based on Julia Cameron’s book Walking in This World. There are twelve chapters, meant to be read one each week. As a creative person, the author guides you on a gentle path to

unblock, heal, and blossom. The group discussion will be facilitated by the Rev. Cynthia Spencer

and other class members.

This is a perfect follow up for the all day class called "Spirit Creating Art; Art finding Spirit." to be held on February 9 in Seccombe Hall.

Trio Globo, in Concert

On Friday, January 25, 2013 at 8:00 p.m., Music at All Saints’ presents the highly acclaimed ensemble Trio Globo. Trio Globo has crafted a totally original voice in contemporary acoustic music. With roots in jazz, classical, and sacred music, rhythmic influences derived from travels in six continents, and a combustible spontaneity, cellist Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), pianist and master harmonica player Howard Levy (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Kenny Loggins, Paquito d’Rivera), and percussionist Glen Velez (Paul Winter Consort, Steve Reich) epitomize the quintessential group for the twenty first-century. They are true originals re-inventing their instruments in new music both personal and global. Tickets are $30, or $45 for premium seating, and $10 for students. For more information, please visit the All Saints’ website.

Healthy Saints' Hikes

Saturday January 12, 2013 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Eucharist at New Camaldoli Hermitage and hike at Limekiln trails.

Limekiln Trails is in Big Sur, 2 miles south of Lucia (where the New Camaldoli Hermitage is) It is one hour drive south from Carmel. The trail has three branches each about 1/2 mile long. Total hiking is 2-3 miles difficulty is rated as “easy”. It is a fairly level walk through towering Redwoods along several lush creeks and only a modest elevation gain. The trails are well maintained and are child friendly, however some people have been known to get their shoes wet while crossing the creeks on their way to see the spectacular 100 foot waterfall. Another spur of the park allows you access to the coast on a scenic rocky beach under

Bonhoeffer Today

The current resurgence of interest in Dietrich Bonhoeffer, based in part on the publication in English of his complete works, demonstrates his relevance to our day. Bonhoef-fer’s articulation of the centrality of Christ to our daily life is as breathtaking as it is challenging. Make this winter a time of intellectual stimulation and spiritual growth by participating in four Monday sessions, on Janu-ary 21 and 28, and February 4 and 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Fr. Rick’s study. We will read and discuss excerpts from Bonhoeffer’s writing; copies of selected essays used for the discussions will be provided. Contact [email protected] or call 831-624-3883 for more information, or to register for the series. There is no cost.

Covenant Group Leader Training

Starting on January 20, 2013 we will begin a five-week training series on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. for those interested in becoming a covenant group leader. The ideal candidates are members who are caring and nurturing in nature, who want to be disciples who make disciples. Aspirants may also complete

the training one on one with Greg Troxell who will be leading this ministry. There will also be opportunities for those who want to shadow a leader for a while, learning on-the-job and becoming a leader later.

Discipleship Commission

Are you an educator, interested in spiritual formation and passionate about helping people know and love the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you desire education and formation for yourself, or for our children and youth? Do you want to strengthen our ability to serve as disciples? Would you like to help prepare people for baptism or confirmation? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, consider joining the Discipleship Commission. Contact Fr. Rick for more information.

Monthly Conversatio

Join our prayer conversation on the second Tuesday of each month, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. In prayerful discernment, participants listen to God by exploring a Bible passage or the life of a saint. The experience is open-ended and generative in nature. We meet in the chapel, located on the northwest corner of the church campus.

Wednesday Bible Study

The Wednesday midweek Bible study will resume on January 9 at 10:30 a.m. in Grant Hall. All are welcome to participate, learn, and share. The group is studying the Book of Acts and will resume with a lesson on chapter sixteen.

Discipleship: We follow Jesus Christ and lead

others into the deep waters of faith.

2013 Pledges

The vestry and finance team are encouraged by the progress of the pledge ingathering. As of December 31, we have received eighty-four pledges, totaling $195,000. This is exactly the number of 2012 pledges we had received at the end of 2011. There are twenty-three households who pledged last year whom we have not yet heard from, and we expect several of our new members to deepen their financial support by completing a pledge.

Our pledge goal for 2013 is $272,000, so we have $77,000 to raise. You can see that we still have a long way to go, but we are optimistic, because we’re counting on the continued enthusiastic generosity of our members and friends. The tentative count indicates that we will end 2012 in the black, having made up approximately $80,000 in pledges and gifts from January 1 to the close of the year.

Both last year and this are stretch years, as we return to being a strong, growing, and vital congregation. Ten years ago we enjoyed 186 pledging units, but through the process of aging, losing the former rector and several staff, and the transition to new leadership, we slowly

Thank you to those who have pledged. If you’ve not yet done so, please fill out and return the pledge form below

soon, in order to help the vestry set the budget in time for the annual meeting on January 27.

Serving on the Vestry

Vestry members work with the rector and his staff to provide spiritual direction, and to engage the congregation in strategic planning. They oversee the finances of the church and make sure the buildings and grounds are maintained. They also coordinate with our missions, providing oversight as each relationship designates.

Serving on the vestry requires worshiping regularly (weekly unless away or ill), praying for the church and its staff, giving generously to the operations and ministries of the church, and being willing to serve. Candidates for the vestry must be confirmed in the Episcopal Church, or be willing to be confirmed or received by our bishop. Please contact a current vestry member or the rector if you are interested.

Stewardship: We offer our all so that

Christ may change water into wine.

Please prayerfully

complete this pledge form and place

it in the offering plate or mail it to the church office.

Visiting St. Patrick's in Haiti

The church and school both participate in the Friends of St. Patrick’s, in partnership with two other Episcopal congregations. This team plans to send representatives on a mission trip to Haiti this coming March. If you would like more information about this trip, contact Rosemary Smith via the parish office. We are inviting two volunteers to experience this life-changing encounter.

Food Pantry

In November we provided food bags to thirty-seven households, helping one-hundred and fifteen individuals. Fifty-two of these were children, while eight were seniors. Additionally, twenty-six men were provided hospitality and lodging via our support of I-HELP.

2013 Big Sur Foragers Festival To Benefit The Big Sur Health Center

A celebration of the amazing array of wild foods will be the centerpiece for a weekend of gourmet food, world-class wine and beer, entertainment, expert-led foraging hikes and a chef competition.

On January 11th and 12th Big Sur area restaurants will host the culinary expertise of notable chefs preparing unique fare from rustic to elegant, paired with the region's amazing selection of wines and beers.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Big Sur Health Center. The community's non-profit health center will receive 100% of the proceeds to support the continued presence of local health care services.

For more information or to order tickets online, please visit our website at bigsurforagersfestival.org.

The Center for Christian Transformation

In 2013, in addition to monthly conversatio, and two online video conferences, there are three opportunities to participate in a Festival gathering.

Festival of Christian Spirituality: The Gift of Poverty and Abundance

June 7 to 9, 2013, at Santa Lucia, the parish’s beautiful outdoor chapel and campgrounds in Big Sur. Choices for overnight accommodations include camping (at no extra cost), enjoying a local inn, or commuting from Carmel. Cost: $245. Contact www.cctcarmel.org.

Festival of Christian Spirituality: Embrace and Exclusion—Living in Community

September 23 to 26, 2013, at All Saints’ Church in Carmel. This mid-week festival runs from 1:00 p.m. on Monday to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. The longer duration provides more opportunity for participants to develop skills in facilitating conversatio and leading group discernment. Space is limited, and participants have the opportunity to join the leadership team for the weekend festival that begins the next day. Cost: $245. Contact www.cctcarmel.org.

Festival for Christian Transformation: Embrace and Exclusion—Living in Community

September 27 to 29, 2013 at All Saints’ Church, in Carmel. Cost: $245. Contact www.cctcarmel.org.

CCT Hangouts Online

1. Conversatio session on the first Tuesday of the month, 7:00 to 8:15 p.m.

2. Forum on facilitating conversatio on the third Saturday of the month, 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

the shadow of highway one. Dolphins have been seen frolicking in the waves 100 yards offshore there in January. Bring Picnic lunch.

Thursday January 17, 2013 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Hiking along the Elkhorn Slough

There are three areas for hiking: The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve has 5 miles of hiking trails that meander through a variety of habitats from oak woodlands to mudflats. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trails. The Moss Landing Wildlife area has a short easy trail that is adjacent to the main channel of the Slough. Bring your camera as it is a good place to watch sea otters, harbor seals and migrating birds. Kirby Park has a wheel chair accessible trail. We will decide which routes depending upon who is coming. Perhaps we will have reason to enjoy them both. We will meet at the church to carpool and depart at 10:00 a.m. From Carmel the trip is 21 miles or 25 minutes north. We can look for lunch at Moss Landing or bring a picnic lunch.

January Public Showing of Le Salon des Artistes

On Friday January 25, Le Salon des Artistes, a newly formed group of artists here at All Saints' ,will host their second public salon prior to the concert featuring Trio Globo. The public, members and ticket buyers are all welcome.

The pre-show exhibit and mixer begins at 6:30 p.m. in Grant Hall. Select pieces will be available for sale and more shown during the after glow party. Wine and cheese at the salon will be provided as well as a chance to meet the artists and hear the story of each piece they are presenting.

To show your art, please contact Marcia Jeiroudi, Don Lonsbrough, or Rodney Warren.

Le Salon des Artistes has been meeting monthly at the home of Marcia Jeiroudi, providing each other encouragement. Artists have invited Don

Lonsbrough, a gifted artist, to critique their pieces so that they may continuously improve on their style and techniques.

Pastoral Care Team

Anyone interested in joining the Pastoral Care Team is invited to attend an informative session on Saturday January 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the church library. This ministry is forming to train church members to visit those who are temporarily sick, hospitalized or unable physically to attend church. All will be trained to visit, pray with and encourage our church members. Some will also be trained to be Lay Eucharistic visitors taking communion from the altar to our parishioners. Some of you may want to join us for events only, like caroling at Christmas or taking Easter baking to homes, knitting a prayer shawl or making a phone call. Come to see what we are planning and let us know how you can be involved in caring for those who can not regularly join us for worship and ministry. Please call Mother Cynthia (520-260-5158) or Rev Gwen (617-584-6650) for questions.

Book Club

The All Saints’ Book Club has had another successful year of selecting and discussing a diverse collection of books. Now we’re approaching our January 2013 meeting, which will be held in the church library on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 starting at 6:00 p.m., when we’ll choose our lineup of books for the new year.

This past year has been bitter sweet for the Book Club; two of our long time members have moved away from Carmel. We always consider our long distance Book Club friends as members, but we’re also always open for new members. If you have a love of books, good company and fine salad dining, come join us in January and help us vote on our 2013 book selections. There’s no pressure to attend every meeting or to even have read every book.

With each year’s choices, I personally have enriched the breadth of my reading, but just as

All Saints' youth Group

Youth Groups: the Salt, Limitless and the Elements

We have three different weekly gatherings of youth, with different purposes:

The Salt: Sundays 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Grades 6-12 in the Youth Room. This is a chance for middle school and high school youth who are interested in deepening their faith through questions and discussion to meet.

Limitless: Sundays 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Grades 6-8 in the Youth Room. This is an activities based youth group for middle school. We play games and have discussions which encourage youth to use problem solving skills, team work, and to look beyond themselves to help others and the world, while exploring basic questions and concepts of faith. This is a great forum to invite friends, and seekers.

The Elements: Mondays 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Grades 9-12. In December the group will meet at Erik’s Deli in Monterey (next to Trader Joe’s). This is a discussion group which meets at a café. Discussions are based on themes each month which parallel themes being dealt with in Limitless, but take the questions to a deeper level. This is a great place to invite friends, and seekers.

To RSVP or learn more about our youth ministry or any of the opportunities below, please contact Robin Denney at [email protected] or call her at 805-835-8538.

Volunteer Search

We are looking for more volunteers who are interested in helping with youth ministry. What skills or gifts do you have that you would like to share? Leading discussion, discipleship, hospitality, cooking, playing games… or more! Training will be provided as well as supervision by our team of youth leaders. Contact Robin Denney for more information.

enriching have been the deep friendships the All Saints’ Book Club engenders.

The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to place in the salad or food to share.

Carmel Chamber Workshops

The Carmel Chamber of Commerce' Smart Coffee: Bright Ideas for Local Business will continue to meet on the second Thursday morning of each month at All Saints' throughout 2013.

The next workshop will be offered Thursday, January 10, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in Grant Hall.

For more information about the event, please contact Greg Troxell or visit the website for the Carmel Chamber at www.carmelcalifornia.org.

Correction to the December Patter

In the article on Claudia Ward being Veteran of the Year for Monterey County, please note that Claudia Ward had not participated in the creation or leadership at All Saints' School. Claudia did however, teach Sunday School at All Saints' Church for ten years and was Sunday School coordinator for seven years.

Camping at Santa Lucia

Does your family like to camp? The parish's camp ground at Santa Lucia in Big Sur on the edge of the Big Sur River, usually opens in April and continues through to the end of October (depending on weather). The campground has two parts, the meadow, reserved for members, and the large group site. To use either campsite requires that you make a reservation. For the last thirty plus year Izzi Shillinglaw has been managing the reservations. She can be reached in the church office on Friday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

the Business of the VestryThe vestry has created a Parish Mission Council to help the church and its five missions to know and pray for each others’ ministries, and to look for ways that we might coordinate and support one another. The first-ever meeting of the Parish Mission Council takes place on Wednesday, January 16. Please offer your prayers and thanksgivings for All Saints’ Church, All Saints’ Day School, Canterbury College Campus Ministry, Epiphany Lutheran & Episcopal Church, Santa Lucia Outdoor Chapel and Campgrounds, and The Center for Christian Transformation.

Delegates to convention serve throughout the year by attending two or three deanery meetings, and by participating in the annual diocesan convention. If you might be interested in serving the larger church as a delegate, please contact Fr. Rick or one of the wardens.

All Saints' Vestry

The vestry is the board of the church, elected by the members to serve a three year term and oversee the management of the church.

Rehearsals, held on Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45, are in the music room at the church, and the Singers sing the first Sunday of each month at the 10:30 a.m. service. Our next time to present music is February 3, 2013. All are welcome!

Music at 5:30 p.m. Service

Music for our 5:30 service is growing! On the first Sunday of each month, Evensong is presented by the Chancel Choir, and on the third Sunday each month, our new Palestrina Ensemble, an auditioned choir specializing in music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, presents music for this Rite II service. Come hear and enjoy these wonderful choirs in these contemplative and spiritual services.
