Dear Sinai Chevra,

I hope this finds you well, enjoying the winter that keeps pretending it is finally going to start! I know many people are happy for no snow, but I for one am hoping for some snow on the slopes by time of our Jews on the Hill Teen Snowboard and Skip Trip on January 22nd.

That being said, I don’t mind that this year I’m doing a professional

development retreat that will be taking place in California. In early January, I will be attending the first of four programs that will take place over a two-year period with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality (IJS). IJS is an organization that has been exploring the overlap between Jewish mystical teachings and various Jewish spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation. The program I will be participating in brings together rabbis from around the country who will study and engage in spiritual practice together.

I’m particularly excited for this upcoming retreat after teaching fundamental Hasidic ideas during my recent Torah Hub class that some of you participated in. One of the great things about teaching is that it pushes you to learn more deeply, and I the material we learned this time certainly has had an impact on me personally. In this class, we focused on the teachings of Hillel Zeitlin, a fascinating teacher who died in the Shoah, who tried to articulate Hasidic thought in its more radical theological form.

For those who weren’t there, I’ll summarize what we learned: All is God. No really, everything. The perspective that we have, in which there is the world, and us, and out there somewhere “God,” is illusion. It’s a

grand cosmic error that we think we are separate from the Whole. Another way they say it, is that the world is the clothing of the Divine. God is hidden within everything at every moment, waiting to be revealed. But the idea that the clothing is separate from God is actually part of the illusion as well ultimately.

The thing that I really love about this radical “non-dualist” theology is that it leads to a holistic spiritual practice. What I mean by that, is that in the Hasidic worldview, spiritual practice isn’t something that is compartmentalized. Spiritual practice isn’t something that just is meant to take place in synagogue, or when you are saying a blessing. Instead, since all of life is a manifestation of the same essential One, every moment becomes an opportunity to seek to reveal the Divine. Every action, every thought, every feeling, every relationship (as I spoke about on Rosh Hashanah), are all opportunities to reflect and discover how we can “raise the sparks” of God hidden in that place. I think this spiritual viewpoint is powerful because it offers a framework for living life in a purposeful way, always striving to lift up whatever comes our way.

For anyone interested in exploring these concepts experientially, in addition to our regular Tuesday night contemplative minyan, on Saturday February 18th we will be having a mini meditation retreat on Shabbas afternoon, from 2:30-6:30. If you have ever been interested in trying meditation, this will be a great opportunity for a significant but not too significant dive in! Stay tuned for details coming soon. There are a few other upcoming programs I am excited about and want to highlight:

Hebrew Reading Class for AdultsWe are creating a beginning Hebrew reading class for adults on Shabbas morning approximately twice a month starting February 4th. If you are a

beginner with Hebrew or just rusty, this will be a great opportunity to work on your Hebrew!

Service Learning For TeensWe are very excited to be starting two tracks of service learning for our teens.

The first, L’shaper – Teen Action Core, is for 9-12th graders that we are creating in collaboration with the North Shore Teen Initiatvie. Teens will go weekly on Monday nights to the Ford School in Lynn, and have brief learning and discussion with me beforehand. Full details coming soon, but if you think your teen would be interested, please contact Evelyn Rothbard at [email protected].

The second service learning component will be for 6th-8th graders, who will go 1-2 times per month to help at a family homeless shelter in Lynn. Some of you already went there during the Mitzvah Day this year. We will be having an informational meeting for parents and kids on Wednesday January 25th at 7:30. Please RSVP to the Temple Sinai office.

New Knesset Katan TeacherI am very excited to welcome Lauren Goldman to our educational team. She is very enthusiastic, and will bring some great new energy to our Shabbas programming for kids. Come meet Lauren at our next Youth and Family service on January 14th, at our spaghetti musical havdalah on January 21st, or at our Knesset Katan program on February 4th!

Happy New Year!-Reb Aaron

Thank you for your Support!

Dear Sinai Members,

A few weeks ago the Temple Sinai “Jews on the Hill” teen group held a meeting to begin to create a new teen lounge at the synagogue. The get-together featured pizza baking, ping-pong games, and more fun as well as a chance to brainstorm some possible ideas for the room. We will use the teen lounge in the future as the meeting place for the new Sinai service-learning program - L’Shaper - Teen Action Core, and for other teen get togethers.

We decided on a few things to form the basis of the lounge and would be interested in any donations of the following items:

• Two couches• Two individual couch chairs or cushy chairs• Large floor rug• Board games• X-Box or PlayStation 3 Video Game console

We would love your help!

If you are interested in donating items or have any questions, contact Susan Weiner in the Temple office at (781)-631-2763 or by email, [email protected].

Sincerely,

Josh Kummins, Alex Rothbard, Aaron Rothbard, Alyson Kummins, Elana Aronson, and Josh Okon

In the past couple of decades, more and more women have taken on the mitzvah of wearing a tallit during services, creating new designs that speak to them. The generational gap is seen at Temple Sinai where every bat mitzvah wears a tallit, but most of our adult women do not. If you are a woman who never had the opportunity to wear a tallit when you were a bat mitzvah (if you had one!), this is a great opportunity to learn about the deeper meanings behind wearing a tallit.

Bring your friends and join us for noshing and learning with Rabbi Fine, sponsored by the Temple Sinai Sisterhood. Everyone is welcome!
