Future Events:
Basketball, volleyball and other sports intramurals are currently in session! Make sure you come out and support the department! Especially in volleyball… we need the extra support.
MTRL Industry Night On January 26, the Annual Engineering Industry Night took place at Frank Forward
in Rooms 219 and 303. We were very fortunate to have guest speakers from
Barrick Gold Corporation, Baskin Associates Technical Services Ltd., and dPoint
Technologies to come share their experience and knowledge with those present.
While it is important to concentrate on your studies, we would also like to remind
everyone that it is very important to attend such networking events. The person
you are chatting to could very well end up as your next boss! Remember to keep
your eyes open for emails and updates on the next industry night and get
involved!
MTRL Foosball Tournament The very next day after the MTRL Industry Night, the MTRL club held a foosball
tourney with prizes for first, second and third place.
First Place: $40
Second Place: $20
Third Place: Free snacks from the vending machine
First-Third: Eligibility to participate in the E-Week Foosball Tournament
Did I mention the tournament was free to join? Around a total of 12 teams
showed up to duke it out for a chance to participate at the E-Week foosball
tournament, including an IGEN team and a ‘who knows what faculty those guys
belonged to’ team. Thanks to everyone that signed up and participated!
Reminders:
Mandatory info session on March 7th for graduating students!
All 4th Year Students: Apply for Graduation!
Keep your printed notes from this semester and bring them into the department for next year’s students!
No mercy was shown as players duked it out on the battlefield

For those who have extra time on their hands… Here are 14 reasons why you
should just drop engineering and become a professional foosball player instead:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hruby/081110. Take Brandon
Moreland for example, he claims to have won $60,000 to $70,000 playing
foosball1.
E-Week Begins E-Week starts on Sunday, February the 5th! If you have signed up for any events,
make sure you show up or else we will lose points for it instead! Last year, we
scored a measly 3709 points while our close neighbours (mining) scored a
whopping total of 22340 points. Let’s try to beat our previous record! If you are
coming out to watch the events, make sure the officials know that you are present
so we can earn more points! If you have to leave early, make sure you sign out
too, otherwise we will lose points too .
MTRL Webpage is Up and Running In case you aren’t aware, the MTRL undergrad webpage is now up and running! Be
sure to visit set your homepage to: www.mtrl.ubc.ca/ugrad/ ! We will be posting
updates, links, and other goodies on the site so be sure to check it out! If you have
any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to email the website
coordinators at [email protected] (Thivanka) or [email protected] (Alan).

Message from the MTRL Executive Team It has really been an amazing semester! We, the MTRL executive team, would like to thank all the students for their support and participation in our events and fundraisers. The record breaking attendance and participation in our events made us realize the excellent community and team spirit that the students have this year. Finally, we cannot forget about the Materials faculty and staff because none of this would be possible without them. So, thank you everyone, we hope you continue to be our foundation for the upcoming semester. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Best wishes on behalf of the executive team, Jerry Chang, President, MTRL student council
MTRL 466 Presentations On November 25th, 4th year students from the Materials Department, as well as graduate
students and various professors (including Drs. Alfantazi, Asselin, Barr, Cockroft, Dreisinger,
Fernlund, Poole, Sinclair, Wassink and Wang) gathered for the final presentations of student
groups that worked on design projects as part of their MTRL 466 course.
Presentations included the development and design of Chitosan bone-scaffolds, heat models
for aluminum sheet bonding in car doors, gold ore processing plants and green energy battery
models for future use at UBC.
While all the professors were intent on testing their students on their work, everyone did
extremely well and handled most of the questions with ease...
Well done everyone!
Reminders:
Keep your printed notes from this semester and bring them into the department for next year’s students!
All 4th Year Students: Apply for Graduation!
Fun and Games:
Question: What is this?
Answer: See Last Page
Pot-Luck and Games Night The second Games Night was held on November 10th, and once again, it was a resounding
success. This time, we added a Pot Luck to the event and everyone that came out would agree
that the food was truly scrumptious. Thank you all for brining different exciting dishes to the
event!
The record held by the previous games night was broken with over 35 people coming in to eat
some delicious food, play a few games and make some new friends. It is really easy to relax
and enjoy yourself, especially if you are playing Pictionary with our guest of honour, Kyle H.,
who kindly donated his masterpiece artwork to the Fun and Games section.
If you missed out on both of the Games Nights, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the third
Games Night! A special thanks to everyone that made it out to this fantastic event!

Q: What is it called when all of the railroad tracks stretch the same amount? A: The iso-train condition. Q: What’s the best place to wash your jewels? A: The heat sink! (Jewels ↔ Joules, get it?)
JSC Gingerbread House Contest On December 1st, the JSC hosted the annual Gingerbread House contest. Teams of two built
their houses and competed for prizes while eggnog, hot cocoa and some tasty snacks were
served. Thank you to the JSC for making this yearly event a fun experience for everyone that
participated. It was simply wonderful to see all the creativity and thought put into the
gingerbread houses.

Year End Christmas Dinner After another long and very arduous semester at Frank Forward, most students were ready to kick back and relax by December 2nd, when over 55 students and faculty (including Drs. Dixon and Wassink) made their way over to Downtown Vancouver to have an all-you-can-eat dinner at Shabusen Japanese Yakiniku Restaurant. It was nice to see students from different years and some students who are currently on coop showing up. Students celebrated the end of classes, tried to ask for more marks, chatted with the professors, and ate literally all they could eat – resulting in a memorable and entertaining night.

JSC Pumpkin Carving
On Wednesday Oct 31st, a pumpkin carving contest was held in Room 303 of the Frank Forward building. Those present were set out to answer one question – who could carve the best and most creative pumpkin? It was a great chance for everyone to show off their artistic talents and everyone had a good time getting their hands dirty. As an added bonus, snacks were also provided free of charge. Thank

2nd Year Materials Engineering Field Trip
Lead by Dr. Tom Troczynski, the second year engineering students visited MTU Maintenance Canada, in Richmond BC this year. MTU is one of largest provider of engine maintenance services in the world. The company is located very close to Vancouver’s International Airport, where it performs various types of repairs and engine testing. The students had a great time and saw lots of large sized turbine engines .

3rd Year Materials Engineering Field Trip
This year the 3rd year students travelled to Toronto and visited many companies including Electrovaya, Liburdi, Vale, Vac Aero, University of Toronto, Bombardier, and CanMet. The trip was very well planned and there so much spare time that the group took a spontaneous trip to Niagara Falls. Because the trip is weeklong, the students were able to visit many more companies than they did in second year. In addition, it was an excellent time for students to bond and get to know each other better. Thank you to all of the 3rd year field trip organizers for all your hard work and making the trip flow so smoothly! Good work guys!

4th Year Materials Engineering Field Trip
Once again, the traditional field trip down to Seattle was a fantastic learning experience that was filled with fun. This year 4th year students were fortunate enough to visit tours at FTI, K2 Sports, Nucor Steel, Intec, Evraz, The Boeing Co. and Mayes Testing. Students also had a sweet dinner dinner at the The Cheesecake Factory. The students saw amazing technology and learned about various manufacturing processes that are regularly used in industry.
