The research projects are carried out under the aid and supervision of the Schieffelin Institute of Health‐Research & Leprosy Centre, Palni Hill Conservation Council, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Vector Control Research Centre. Each day brought a new challenge to the five of us, whether figuring out the postal system or trying to communicate with the people around us. Yet, each of us learned a great deal about life in India and grew immensely as people throughout our four‐month journey in India. The first month of our program really focused on learning about the Indian culture. We stayed at the Inter‐Church Service Association in Chennai, one of the largest cities in India, and took daily field trips that corresponded to each subject we were studying. We learned of India’s many religions, social issues, and environmental problems and had a chance to ask questions and gain a better understanding of their culture. We also learned the basics of living in India, from what kind of food was safe to eat to how to buy a train or bus ticket, which turned out to be quite a challenge. After living in a noisy yet vibrant city for a month, we moved to the outskirts of Chennai for a rural orientation at the Christian Council for Rural Development and Research (CCOORR). CCOORR is a non‐government volunteer organization that focuses on improving the lives of the neglected people of society. Through their organization, we had the opportunity to visit various governmental offices and spend a great deal of time with the local village. During the day we spoke with village leaders about issues facing their people and in the evenings we danced and played volleyball with the village children, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming.
