Fire in Alamos
Most of us started the year with a countdown from 10 to 1. However, in the Tourism Office, we started counting from 2011 to 2020. The Non-profit organization of El Despertar de una Riviera (The Awakening of a Riviera) and its members, service providers of Kino, began to envision a strategic plan to Kino Bay in 2020.

The Seri rock band, Hamac Caziimi, meaning “Divine Fire” in Seri, performed at Los Alamos in its 27th
FAOT festival. One after another, viewers began to approach the stage to dance. After dancing with
their audience, Hamac Caziim left as a message: "indigenous people still exist and continue to fight for our
culture ... no matter if you belong to a minority or a tribe .... You have to speak your language .. "

Dirt, shovels and paper birds
“La Pandilla Ecológica” construyendo su hortaliza
The ecology Club "The ecologic gang", supported by teach-
ers and parents got down to work. Among shovels, laughter,
cement, gravel, sand and lots of fun they finished preping the
space donated by the elementary school to make a garden
where the proud members of the "gang" learn to grow their own
vegetables.
In another scenario, the "Jovenes Delfines” received their es-
tuaries theory class taught by Caro and Adriana of Prescott
College and joined by Abram. Between shouts of excitement,
northern style scandal and materials, they designed their own
"perfect bird” and spent a pleasant evening learning about the
wealth of their community.
Kino Bay is not a "fishing community facing complex environ-mental issues ..." Kino Bay is a place where history is re-
written daily with the help of our residents, who are also actors.
This story is about the HISTORY not the end of the jour-
ney nor the goal, the beautiful excuse that we have to reinvent
it every day in our Kino.

Many migratory birds arrive at the Kino estuary during the fall and winter. One of these is the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), regionally known as "Pelicanos Borregon" for its large size and can weigh up to 14 kg. This species is in danger of extinction like many others, it is hunted for its meat and feathers. This Pelican unlike com-mon pelicans, does not dive in to eat, it prefers group fishing. These birds can live about 25 years and when they mi-grate, they fly in groups of up to 3000, in “V” formations or single file and can make trips of 500 miles in a day. You can observe this and other endemic birds in the Estero de La Santa Cruz this winter.

With donations collected by the Kino Ladies Klub (KLK), 34 high school students received scholarships for the se-cond semester of school. Recipients must maintain a 70/100 grade point average and provide tutoring to elementary school students. The program is designed to keep high school students in school, promote scholarship, and emphasize the value of service to others.

“Lencho”
Fishermen, turtles and PowerPoint Between ecology gangs and dolphins, we found Cosme, Ulysses and "Lencho" local fisher-
men, working on their "PowerPoint" presentation to participate in their first sea turtle meeting
in La Paz, Baja California. These fishermen decided, just a few months ago, to make their
own Sea Turtle group, and have committed themselves to change the looting of these crea-
tures that, perhaps after many years of inhabiting the earth, may have something to teach us.
The story does not end here, upon their return, they have already "signed" a contract to go
back to the classroom and share with the little ones the anecdotes of their affair.

Kino Conection: Club Deportivo In January, the Club provided nine backpacks with school supplies to children with birthdays at the Desayunador in Old Kino. The women of Familias Unidas regularly sell their products at the Club, and Club members will be present for their fundraising event on February 13 in the Old Kino plaza.
In January, the Manos Ayudando committee of the Club donated over $5,000 pesos to help those in need, and First Responders responded to 17 calls for medical assistance. The Club continues to collect recyclables for the Ecology clubs in Kino's schools.

KINOFEST 2011 has just begun At least in the minds of members of El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C., one of the main players in the organization of KINOF-
EST, and of the Kino Bay service providers. On January 22, together in meeting at the Hacienda Hotel, they began brainstorm-
ing and evaluating the good, the bad and that which KINOFEST 2010 lacked. Some unanimous decisions include the Gastro-
nomic Fair to be held on the beach, inviting restaurants in other parts of the state to participate, adding activities for children and
finishing up with a big concert. No doubt there will be some surprises. We will see you there on November 5-12.
