In Touchby Clay Guthmiller, Superintendent

The 2007-08 school year is going by quickly. Our second semester of classes officially began on January 16. During the first half of the year, our

students and staff have done a tremendous job. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments achieved by our students. Johnston students have excelled in the classroom as well as in all of our activities. These accomplishments have come about through the efforts of our students, staff and parents and their commitment to quality and excellence in our educational programs.

Student enrollment continues to increase in the Johnston Community School District. The district experienced an enrollment increase of 240 students over last year. A recent enrollment study completed in November shows that the district can expect to grow at a rate of three to four percent during the next five years. While nearly two-thirds of the state’s school districts’ enrollments are declining, we are enjoying the benefits of growth. However, this annual increase in student growth continues to create challenges related to staffing, facilities, class size and finance. Planning for these issues continues to be ongoing.

The district is quite proud of its newest school, Timber Ridge Elementary, which opened last August. Additions and renovations were also completed at Johnston Middle School. Work is well underway on the additions and renovations at Johnston High School. A new 16 classroom and music addition, 9,000 sq. ft. physical education facility, expanded cafeteria and kitchen and other renovations are all slated for completion by September 2008. The Board of Education is also planning an addition to the current bus facility that will consolidate the busing, technology, maintenance and receiving operations. The district plans to also add classrooms and other space to specific elementary schools based upon enrollment projections and programming needs. The district will also purchase land for future facility expansion. Look for more information in the coming months.

The district continues to study the busing services provided for students. Currently, the district buses 100% of the students. Busing costs are expected to exceed $2 million next year. The Board of Education has contracted with a consulting company to complete a study of the district’s current busing services. The board will receive a final report on the cost effectiveness and efficiency of the current system. The consultants will also make recommendations on the feasibility of the district contracting with a private carrier for busing services. In addition, a task force comprised of parents, staff and community patrons has been meeting and will provide further input to the board regarding busing services in the district. The board will hear final reports from each of the groups in January.

Over 1,400 parents completed a district survey in November. The administration was seeking opinions, ideas and concerns regarding school quality, busing, school calendars, bullying and other topics. Parents gave the district high marks regarding the overall quality of education their children were receiving. Ninety-eight percent of those responding gave the schools a good, very good or excellent rating. Look for specific building and district results in the upcoming school newsletters and district publications.

The excellent reputation of the Johnston Community School District is based upon the outstanding achievement of its students. Staff members are committed to providing high levels of learning, positive relationships, and personal growth for all students as thousands of Johnston success stories are played out in our classrooms again this year.

Best Wishes for a great New Year in 2008.

Children learn through everything they do. Most of the skills on this list are developed through everyday activities. Playing with, reading with and talking with your child are the primary ways you can help your child learn. Use this list to help your child prepare for kindergarten. Your child does not need to have all of these skills to go to kindergarten!

Help Your Child Get Ready for Kindergarten

Children entering or eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2008 will learn about all aspects of safety, fire, poison, strangers, traffic, home, car, bus, playground, etc., via indoor classroom and outdoor activities. Books, songs, visits to the fire department and practice training enable children to enjoy and understand what they are learning.

More information and dates will be available in the March Connection newsletter. Online registration will begin on Monday, April 14.

Kindergarten RegistrationKindergarten is an exciting new chapter in a child’s life. A

child’s first year of school provides so many new opportunities: working with letters, sounds, beginning to read, library, recess, art, music, physical education and the computer lab.

If you have a child who will be five on or before September 15, 2008, please stop at any elementary school to register your child for kindergarten.

All open enrolled families may register at any of the elementary buildings. Please note that while a specific building request will be considered, we will place open enrollment students based on class size and room availability.

Items required for Kindergarten registration:1. Proof of your legal address or residence (eg: utility bill, lease or mortgage with your name and address on it) 2. Your child’s birth certificate (required to complete registration)3. Immunization Record. An official birth certificate (if born in Iowa) may be obtained from the following sources.

All-Day/Half-Day Kindergarten FAQs

Q. Is Johnston offering both all-day/half-day kindergarten next year?A. Johnston will offer all-day kindergarten for all who request an all-day placement. Parents desiring a half-day placement may request placement in a half-day section. Half-day kindergarten will be offered as enrollment warrants. Half-day kindergarten sections may not be offered in all elementary buildings if enrollment does not warrant. The district will offer a one-year placement for half-day kindergarten in another elementary, which has half-day classroom space availability. A student attending a non-attendance boundary elementary for half-day kindergarten will return to their attendance boundary elementary after their kindergarten year. The location and number of half-day sections will be based on enrollment numbers, geographic location of sections, and transportation routes.

Q. Why isn’t all-day kindergarten being offered “across the board”?A. Not all parents are interested in the all-day option. The Johnston School Board and administration have implemented a plan to provide all-day kindergarten for all who request. This provides parents with choice. The district will monitor the success of the program through student achievement data, staff input, and parental surveys.

Q. How do I indicate which program I want for my child?A. All kindergarten parents will be asked to complete a program preference form that will list programming options. In addition to this form, parents will be asked to complete additional registration forms including medical/contact information and financial status form if applicable. If a parent meets financial guidelines comparable to guidelines for free and reduced lunch, a financial status form should also be submitted in August for consideration for the waiving of student fees.

Fall MIALT achievement results again show consistent growth in student achievement. Parents receive individual student growth profile sheets at fall conferences and again at the end of the school year. The following charts use the median score for each grade level to monitor grade level growth. The median score represents the middle score where half the students are higher and half the students are lower. Using the median comparison method, the fall 2007 data shows students are performing at similar levels to the last three years.

Third through eleventh grade scores for fall 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 are displayed on the charts below. Eight of the grade levels’ Math medians matched or exceeded past years’ median scores. Johnston’s median scores are above national median scores at all grade levels.

The Reading and Language charts display consistent academic achievement. In Reading, five grade levels matched or exceeded past high median scores. In Language Arts, four grade levels matched or exceeded past median scores with the remaining grade levels attaining medians within 1 or 2 points of grade level highs. As with Math, both Reading and Language Arts medians are above the national median scores.

New information system for parents, students, staffThe Johnston Community School District now uses Infinite

Campus as our Student Information System. Infinite Campus is a web-based system that has replaced K12 Planet, Chancery SMS and MacSchool. Planning for the transition to Infinite Campus began in January 2007.

Staff members use Infinite Campus for student demographic information and the online grade book. We are proud of our staff in their efforts to learn and use Infinite Campus!

The student and parent portion of Infinite Campus is called the “Portal.” Students and parents have individual accounts to access the portal. Student accounts only allow the viewing of the individual student’s information while the parent account may view all students in the household.

Letters to parents with account activation keys were mailed out in early October. Secondary students received account information in their homeroom/seminar classes in mid-October.

In December, with guidance counselors’ assistance, students in grades 9-11 completed their 2008-2009 course registration through Infinite Campus while at school.

Infinite Campus fosters communication between our schools and students/parents. One of the communication tools in Infinite Campus includes Teacher Messenger, which will be available for staff use this semester.

Teacher Messenger provides staff with the ability to post messages to the portal and the option to send messages to registered e-mail addresses. Parents: To ensure that you receive an e-mail message, your e-mail address must be entered into the portal in the parent account settings. Please note that messages sent via the Teacher Messenger are sent from a generic account and replies to that account will not be answered. Parents are encouraged to be conscientious about sending e-mail messages to teachers because it is difficult to reply to large volumes of e-mail in a timely manner.

If you have questions, please contact:Ann Wiley, Instructional Technology Coordinator515-278-0470 ext. 114 or [email protected] McGill, Director of Technology515-278-0470 ext. 145 or [email protected]

Infinite Campus FAQsQ. What do I do if I forget or misplace my username and/or password?A. Contact Ann Wiley at 278-0470 or [email protected] to get your username and/or password reset.

Q. Can I change my username and/or password?A. Usernames cannot be changed, but passwords can be changed from the Change Account Info link (left frame).

Q. What causes an account to get disabled?A. Accounts are disabled when there are three miskeyed attempts at logging into the account. This is for security reasons. Please contact Ann Wiley to have the account active again.

Q. If I have some information that is not correct, how do I get it updated?A. Click on the Family Link (left frame) to see demographic information. This information can be updated at the school level. Grade questions should be addressed by the course teacher. Attendance and Fee questions should be addressed by the school level office.

Six Pillars of SportsmanshipPromote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling six core ethical principals...

1. Trustworthiness - Always pursue victory with honor • Demonstrate and demand integrity • Observe and enforce the spirit and letter of rules • Don’t engage in or tolerate dishonesty or cheating • Don’t compromise education and character-development goals.

2. Respect - Treat the tradition of the sport and participate with respect • Don’t engage in or tolerate disrespectful conduct • Win with grace and lose with dignity

3. Responsibility - Be a positive role model on and off the field • Further the mental, social and moral development of athletes • Encourage athletes to be committed to their sport and develop academic skills and character to succeed

4. Fairness - Adhere to high standards of fair play • Treat team members fairly according to their expectations • Never take unfair advantage • Be open-minded

5. Caring - Assure that the emotional, physical and moral well-being is always placed above desires and pressures to win

6. Citizenship - Promote sportsmanship by honoring the rules and goals of the sport • Establish codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents, spectators • Safeguard the integrity of the sport by discouraging the abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco

Tips for parents with children in a team activityBe a Positive Role Model Encourage good sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy to everyone • Demonstrate positive support for all players • Never use profane language or gestures • Never boo or taunt • Never promote violence

Respect Coaches and OfficialsRemember, coaches and officials are the authority figures during games and practices • If you have an issue, make an appointment to talk to the coach and/or official at an appropriate time. • Never throw a fit in front of your kids. • Never question or confront the coach and/or the official or participate in name-calling.

Teach Kids Winning Isn’t EverythingDo not de-emphasize winning, but emphasize adherence to ethical standards and sportsmanship in the pursuit of victory. • Never trivialize either the desire to win or the importance of actually winning — it is disrespectful to athletes and coaches. • Winning is important and trying to win is essential. • It is one thing to be declared a winner; it is quite another to win with honor.

Remember...Sports Should Be Fun!The game is for the youth, not the adults. • Praise your child for competing fairly and trying hard. • Quality programs are based on the belief that vital lessons and the value of sports are learned from the competition itself rather than the outcome.
