January 19, 2018 Dear St. Gregory the Great Academy Families and Friends, Peace be with you! St. Gregory the Great Academy will soon join in our nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools Week, January 28, 2018 – February 2, 2018. Both the national theme, “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed” and our Academy theme, “Opening the Gate to Discipleship” speak of the way that all of us who are a part of our learning communities share a common purpose and mission. At St. Gregory the Great Academy, we strive to provide an education that is authentically Catholic and academically excellent to each of the students who are entrusted to our care. Our Catholic faith is an integral part of the everyday experience of our students, and we are very proud of this fact. Our Academy consistently works to help students become learners equipped for an uncertain yet exciting future. Since 1965, St. Gregory the Great Academy has carried out this holy work due to the commitment of parishioners, the dedication of faculty, and the trust of parents. Our Academy has a long and distinguished history, one that I am proud to be a part of. Catholic Schools Week is a special time to celebrate who we are as an Academy, to be thankful for those who have come before us in the history of our school, and to look hopefully toward the future of St. Gregory the Great Academy. Please note the following schedule of activities for Catholic Schools Week 2018: Sunday, January 28, 2018: We celebrate our Parish! We will begin Catholic Schools Week with the celebration of Holy Mass at 12:00 noon in Church. All are welcome to gather with us as we begin this special day and special week in prayer. We are particularly grateful for the priests who minister here, including our pastor Fr. McClane, as well as Fr. Al and Fr. Lines. We also have been, and continue to be, blessed to have Fr. Jay as a member of our community for the past 13 years. Our annual Open House will follow in the Academy from 1:30 -3:30pm. We invite you to come, enjoy light refreshments, and visit the classrooms where your child can proudly share this year’s school work and special projects. Please feel free to bring family and friends! Teachers will be available to chat and you are free to explore other rooms in the buildings as well. Be sure to observe the variety of projects that the students have been working on related to our theme this year as well as the special tables set up by the PTA. The PTA and Student Ambassadors will offer guided tours to all who are interested in learning about our Academy, and many of our extracurricular clubs will be on hand to explain how they contribute their time and talent. I will hold an informal question and answer session for prospective families at 2:30pm in the Sister Georgine Media Center for anyone who is interested in enrolling for 2018-2019.

Monday, January 29, 2018: We celebrate our Families! It is our families who support us in all that we do. Catholic education is not a destination; it is instead a partnership that home and school nurture. As a result, today is Grandparents Day! Each student is welcome to bring one grandparent to school. Grandparents are asked to arrive with the students in the morning, and will be checked in and provided with a badge. The grandparents will then accompany their grandchildren during the first few classes of the day, until approximately 10:30am. At 10:30am, grandparents will be invited to stop in the cafeteria for light refreshments prior to departing the Academy. Grandparents need to be registered by January 24, 2018 in order to participate in this day, as we need this time to properly plan for accommodating the number of people we will have in the building. Please register the grandparent who will attend using the form at this link: https://goo.gl/forms/qIbF6GQp3KskXeQ83. For those students for whom having a grandparent attend is impossible, another “Special Person” may attend this day; please see details in the original email. Tuesday, January 30, 2018: We celebrate the Sanctity of Life! As a Catholic school, we believe that life begins at the moment of conception and that we have a duty to protect the right to life until God calls us from this life. As I made clear back in December, I firmly believe that suicide prevention and mental wellness are critical parts of the pro-life mission of the Church. Thus, we are establishing an emergency fund for which the sole purpose will be to assist members of our school community who are in crisis and need assistance with making a first connection with professional help. So, this year we will be expressing our individuality with crazy sock and ties, but also asking for a donation of $2.00 to play! Students are invited to wear their uniforms with the most colorful, zany, or wild tie that they can find and/or the most creative and “loud” socks that they can locate. Parents, please be certain that the ties and socks selected do not violate the Academy policy on obscene or vulgar content. Also, this evening our Winter Concert will take place. Grades 1-4 and the Academy choir will perform in Ferrante Hall at 7:00pm. All are welcome. Wednesday, January 31, 2018: We celebrate our Teachers! There is a well-known quote which states, “Be it known to all who enter here that Jesus is the reason for this school. He is the unknown but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.” Our teachers have chosen to dedicate themselves to education, and strive to model the Master Teacher Jesus. Catholic educators do not simply have jobs; indeed, they have vocations. Our PTA will be treating them to a special breakfast, and I am sure a note of appreciation from parents and students would make their day extra special! I am very blessed to work with these professionals each day, as they are the lifeblood of St. Gregory the Great Academy. Thursday, February 1, 2018: We celebrate our Spirit! St. Gregory the Great Academy is a community which both prays and plays together. We frequently join together to share in the sacraments, hear God’s word, and offer prayer. At the same time, we also like to have fun together! We will celebrate our Academy spirit and pride as a community that prays, works, and plays together. Spirit Day events are always fun to watch, participate in, and cheer on. The students all have the opportunity to participate. As in the past, it will be Blue vs. White. This year all “A” homerooms are on the White Team, and all “B” homerooms are on the Blue Team. 6C will be split evenly among both teams. Preschool “B” classes are on the Blue Team and Preschool “W” classes are on the White Team. This is a Spirit Wear Out of Uniform day so students should wear SGGA sweatpants, t-shirts, and sweatshirts and/or their team colors. Jeans may not be worn as the zippers scratch the gym floor. All students must wear sneakers. The Preschool classes will begin the day in the

3

gym for Opening Activities, and then participate in a few events. They will then return to their classrooms for further Spirit Day activities. Grades Preschool 3, Preschool 4, K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 will participate from 8:30 -11:00am and grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 will participate from 11:45 -2:00 pm. Student lunch periods will be adjusted around these times. Hot lunch will be pizza, which can be paid for at the usual rate of $3.75 or on a lunch card. There will be NO other entrée choices at lunch on this day.

Friday, February 2, 2018: We celebrate our Students! Students are what makes a school a school! They have shown us, time and again, their many gifts, talents and abilities. We applaud how they have answered the call this year to help others, both here in the local community and far away. Again, the PTA has planned some ways to make their day special. They will enjoy a special assembly program in the morning and a special treat at lunch. We will celebrate our spirit of collaboration and the special gift of having preschool, elementary, and middle school students in our Academy as we celebrate Buddy Day! Each student in the Academy has a “buddy” who is an older or younger student. The buddies attend masses together and work on special projects from time to time. For Buddy Day, buddies will work on a special project in the afternoon between 1:00pm – 2:15pm. We treasure our students of all different age levels. This will be an “Out of Uniform” day for all grade levels. Also, please note that the annual Book Fair will take place during Catholic Schools Week. All grade levels will have the opportunity to visit the fair during school, and the Book Fair will be open at the following additional times for family members to peruse the offerings: Sunday, January 28, 2018 – Open House 1:30pm – 3:30pm Monday, January 29, 2018 – Grandparents Day – 8:30am-11:30am Tuesday, January 30, 2018 – Winter Concert – 6:00pm – 9:00pm Thursday, February 1, 2018 – Spirit Day – 8:30am – 2:30pm As you can see, Catholic Schools Week is filled with so many opportunities to celebrate who we are as the St. Gregory the Great Academy community. Come join us for Mass on Sunday where we can all share the faith that brings us together with the most perfect prayer, namely Mass. We welcome you and encourage you to bring guests to visit us at our Open House. Your presence at Spirit Day will surely make it much more special. Let us continue to celebrate this rich tradition of education that is St. Gregory the Great Academy as we “Open the Gate to Discipleship.” For the many ways you help and support us all year long, I thank you and celebrate you. We all look forward to having you present for any or all of the activities during Catholic Schools Week 2018. May peace and every blessing be yours, Jason C. Briggs, Ed.D. Principal

SGGA Winter Concert News

Dear 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade and Choir Parents,

In years past, it has been the tradition of St. Gregory the Great Academy for the students to perform an

annual Concert. The concert will be performed by the first, second, third, and fourth grades as well as the SGGA

Choral Ensembles. The concert will take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 7:00p.m. Please mark your

calendar now!

The children in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 are asked to dress church appropriate with some guidelines below:

- Girls: dress (knee length or longer), stockings, dress shoes (school shoes), or dress pants with a nice

top

- Boys: dress pants, button down shirt (any color), tie (optional), socks and school shoes

- Chamber Choir: concert attire (white top, black pants or skirt) same as Carnegie Hall attire

- Please NO shorts, leggings, or sneakers.

Please tear off below to indicate your receipt of this letter and to confirm that your child will participate

in the concert. Please keep in mind that a large part of your child’s grade this marking period is a result of the

preparation and performance in the Winter Concert. It is very important that all of the students attend.

I enjoy working with your children very much and we cannot wait to share with you our love of music!

Looking forward to seeing you at the concert!

Kind regards,

Kristin Bergin, Music Teacher

BINGO WORKERS NEEDED!

Help is desperately needed –

please consider joining a Bingo Team!

Bingo is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the

St. Gregory the Great Parish Center

All proceeds from the Tuesday and Thursday Bingo go directly to the Academy.

It is important that we have plenty of workers to help us staff this fund raiser.

We are in desperate need of Bingo Workers who can commit to working every month

or every other month.

Interested in helping?? There are THREE ways to join:

Option 1 - A monthly commitment on either Tuesday or Thursday Evening - you would

be assigned a team, etc 1st Tuesday – 2nd Tuesday etc. same for Thursday.

(4 points per night) - Bingo hours are 5:30 pm until 10:15 pm

Option 2 - A Bingo Buddy - You would only be required to work every other month.

You would share the yearly responsibility with your Bingo Buddy.

You still receive 4 points per night,

but, it is a 6 month not a 12 month commitment, but is a yearlong commitment.

Option 3 – Single Bingo Buddy – You would be required to work every other month.

You would commit to either working every even month of the year or every odd month

of the year. You would not be able to switch.

You still receive 4 points per night,

but, it is a 6 month not a 12 month commitment, but is a yearlong commitment.

Please keep in mind, Bingo is a 12 month commitment (either by yourself or with your

buddy) – if you miss 3 or more Bingos in a year, you will no longer be considered a

bingo worker. Working Bingo is NOT a “drop-in” volunteer service – no one is allowed

to show up at any Bingo because they need a few extra points – you must be assigned to a

team.

If you cannot work your scheduled Bingo night, it is important that you contact your MIC

to let him/her know why you cannot attend.

Please contact Mrs. Patty Pierson to sign up to work Bingo at

St. Gregory the Great Church presents Tuesday Night Live

The Benedict Option: Should Catholics Run for the Hills?

with Dr. R.J. Snell, Witherspoon InstituteJanuary 23 • 7:30 pm • Academy Cafeteria

Many have a sense that our society is now so alien and hostile to the faith that Catholics are strangers in America. Some have even suggested a “strategic retreat” or withdrawal from politics

and public life. Is that true? Should Catholics withdraw? Join us for this evening of conversation on the challenges and opportunities for faith in our cultural moment.

Dr. R. J. Snell is Director of the Center on the University and Intellectual Life at the Witherspoon Institute. Prior to his appointment at the Center, he was for many years Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University and the Templeton Honors

College. His research interests include the liberal arts, ethics, natural law theory, Thomas Aquinas, the Catholic intellectual tradition, and the work of Bernard Lonergan, SJ.
