Dear Friends,
The Church in Latin America boasts the worlds largestCatholic population. However, a study commissioned inthe late 1990s by CELAM, the federation of Latin Ameri-can Catholic bishops conferences, found that Latin
Americans were leaving the Church at the alarming rate
of approximately 8,000 people each day. This exodus is the result of complex factors, ranging fromthe strain that economic globalization places on communi-ties to well-financed competition from other groups thatare drawing people away from the Church. Because of avery low priest-to-parishioner ratio and the local churchesinability to support the substantial number of parishioners, many of the faithful often seek a closer sense of commu-nity elsewhere. In addition, migration across the regioncan rupture the bonds of family and community in whichfaith is nurtured and grows.
To confront these tendencies, the Collection for the
Church in Latin America supports pastoral projects thatengage Latin American parishioners in their faith andstrengthen their sense of mission and identity with theChurch. Your generous support of the Collection providesevangelization in rural and poverty-stricken areas, reli-gious training, and catechesis and formation programs. The cost of a daily cup of coffee could provide a younggirl with her First Holy Communion book.
Together, we can keep faith with the Church in LatinAmerica. Thank you for your generous response, andmay God bless you and your loved ones.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend J. Peter SartainBishop of Joliet

Baby Bottles for Life
This month our parish will be participating in a spe-cial fundraiser to promote and further a Culture ofLife within our parish and local community. The pro-ceeds of this event will help support the life-savingwork of Woman's Choice Services, a Catholic preg-
nancy center with locations in Lombard, DownersGrove, Hinsdale and their new Center that justopened in September in Crest Hill, Illinois.
On the weekend of January 9th and 10th, baby bot-tles will be distributed to parishioners to take homeand fill with spare change. Bottles will then be re-turned to the parish the weekend of January 23rdand 24th.
Baby Bottles for Life is a great way for each memberof the family to help in building a Culture of
Life. Thank you in advance for your response to thecall of the Gospel to serve those in need. As youtake a bottle, also pray for a child!
Creating Evil
We all know that God created the world we live in. Well, ifthat is true, why would a God who loves us create evil inour world?
One way to answer this is to assert that God does notreally love us all that much. But how can you assert thatwhen John 3:16 so clearly refutes it?
For God so loved the world that he gave hisonly Son, so that everyone who believes inhim might not perish but might have eternallife.
When I worked with infrared radiation as a senior scien-tist, we knew that light is composed of photons of energy. The more photons there are, the brighter the light they will
cause. Light is something God can create because Godcan create photons. But scientifically there is no suchthing as darknessthere are no photons of darkness thatmake something darker. What we call darkness is simplythe absence or the partial absence of light. Darkness isnotsomething God can create because scientifically thereis no such thing as darkness.
Similarly, heat is the addition of energy to atoms whichmake them move more rapidly within a molecule. Heat issomething God can create because God can create en-ergy. But scientifically there is no such thing as cold-nesswhat we call coldness is simply the absence or thepartial absence of heat. Coldness is notsomething Godcan create because scientifically there is no such thing ascoldness.
Finally, evil is what we call the absence of goodness.Goodness is something God can createin fact every-thing God creates mustbe good because God is infinitelygood. Evil is notsomething God can create because itoccurs only when someone defies Gods will.
So now you know. Evil is notsomething that God can cre-ate. Evil is just the absence of God in our lives. Next timesomeone asks you why God created evil, you can answervery simply: He didntwe did!
May God bless you and your family.Deacon Fred
