Jets to interview Bowles again, to meet with McDermott (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press January 12, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have scheduled a second interview with Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for their head coaching vacancy.

The Jets are also meeting with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott this week, making him the seventh candidate to talk to the team since Rex Ryan was fired on Dec. 29.

Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is widely regarded to be the Jets' top candidate, but he can't be interviewed again until the Seahawks are eliminated from the playoffs or during the bye week leading to the Super Bowl.

Bowles, who has led Arizona's defense for two seasons, is being sought by a few other teams with openings.

McDermott has been Carolina's defensive coordinator for four years, and was in the same role in Philadelphia for two seasons.

Schumer: Jets should keep training camp at SUNY Cortland Associated Press January 12, 2015

http://pro32.ap.org/article/schumer-jets-should-keep-training-camp-suny-cortland

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer wants the New York Jets to keep their training camp in central New York.

The New York Democrat will be at Syracuse University Monday afternoon to call on the NFL team to return this summer to SUNY Cortland, 30 miles south of Syracuse.

Schumer says since the Jets began holding their training camp in Cortland starting in 2009, some $24 million has been pumped into the local economy thanks to the thousands of fans who show up each summer during the team's three-week stay.

Late last month, the Jets fired head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik. Ryan was a big proponent of the team's holding training camp in Cortland.

A source told The Associated Press over the weekend that Ryan had reached a deal to coach the Buffalo Bills.

While the Jets wait for Dan Quinn's schedule to free up, their head-coaching search continues.

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will be interviewed for the position, a source confirmed to Newsday. The meeting reportedly will be on Wednesday.

McDermott, 40, has had top-10 defenses the past three seasons in Carolina. Prior to that, he was with the Eagles from 1999-2010, moving his way up from an administrative role to various defensive coaching positions before his firing on Jan. 15, 2011.

The Jets also have scheduled a second interview with Todd Bowles. The Cardinals' defensive coordinator and Quinn, the Seahawks' defensive coordinator, are the leading candidates for the head-coaching vacancy, per sources, but it's clear Jets owner Woody Johnson is doing his due diligence, along with consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf.

The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets can't talk to Quinn again until Monday. Should the Seahawks win, the Jets will be allowed to talk to Quinn during the bye week before the Super Bowl.

The Jets also are close to hiring Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their new general manager. According to Fox Sports 1, Maccagnan is expected to conduct a portion of McDermott's interview.

Jets having Todd Bowles back for interview (J.P. Pelzman) The Record January 13, 2015

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/jets-having-todd-bowles-back-for-interview-1.1191521

The Jets have scheduled Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for a second interview as their search for a new coach entered its third week Monday, amidst an NFL coaching landscape that changed seismically when Denver and coach John Fox parted ways.

Bowles, an Elizabeth native will interview Wednesday, the same day that Buffalo is scheduled to introduce former Jets coach Rex Ryan as its new coach. Ryan replaces Doug Marrone, who opted out of his contract with the Bills and briefly appeared to be the front-runner for the Jets’ job. However, his interview didn’t go well, according to a source.

The Jets also will interview Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott on Wednesday. He has been the Panthers’ defensive coordinator for four seasons. He would be the seventh candidate interviewed by the Jets.

Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, a Morristown native, has become the leader in the clubhouse since the Jets cooled on Marrone. However, he also is believed to be coveted by other teams, and now the Broncos could be in that mix with Fox leaving following Denver’s upset loss to Indianapolis in the AFC divisional playoffs Sunday.

Certainly the Seahawks’ demolition of Denver’s offense in the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in February would seem to help Quinn if the Broncos come calling.

Quinn, who interviewed with the Jets earlier this month, cannot be hired or formally offered any job until the Seahawks’ season is over. The defending Super Bowl champions host Green Bay in the NFC title game Sunday.

Bowles, whose Arizona defense ranked fifth in the NFL in points allowed and helped the Cardinals reach the playoffs despite a rash of injuries at QB, also is in demand. He reportedly is scheduled to have a second interview with Atlanta.

The Jets didn’t announce the hiring of Houston director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their new general manager Monday, as had been expected. However, it still is believed that announcement will come very soon.

NJ ADVANCE MEDIA

John Fox out as Denver Broncos' coach. Should Jets pursue him? (Darryl Slater) Nj Advanced Media January 12, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/john_fox_out_as_denver_broncos_coach_should_jets_p.html

John Fox is finished as the Broncos' head coach, in what has been termed a mutual parting of ways, in multiple reports.

How and why it happened doesn't really matter for the Jets, who are still looking for Rex Ryan's replacement. Other than the Broncos and Jets, four other teams are also still seeking a new coach: the 49ers, Raiders, Falcons and Bears.

The Bills on Monday hired Ryan to replace Doug Marrone, who opted out of his contract.

Fox immediately vaults Marrone as the most experience head coaching candidate available. Will the Jets pursue him? Should they?

Fox spent four seasons in Denver, the last three with future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, but was never able to win a Super Bowl. The Broncos lost at home to the Colts on Sunday in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Fox made the playoffs every season and Denver and went 46-18 there in regular season games. Before that, he spent nine seasons coaching the Panthers, and went 73-71, from 2002-10. Fox was the Giants' defensive coordinator form 1997-2001.

The Jets' top two candidates have been Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

The Jets were reportedly prepared to fly to Seattle on Saturday if the Seahawks lost to the Panthers. Seattle won. This week, the Jets are bringing back Bowles for a second interview.

Fox turns 60 next month, and is considerably older than both Quinn, 44, and Bowles, 51. But neither of those men have ever been a head coach.

Given Fox's experience left and success (albeit mostly with one of the sport's all-time elite players, Manning), should the Jets pursue Fox?

5 former Jets who are still alive in the NFL playoffs (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media January 12, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/5_former_jets_who_are_still_alive_in_the_nfl_playoffs.html

At this time last week, we brought you a collection of nine former Jets players and coaches who remained in contention for a Super Bowl ring this season.

That list of nine has now been trimmed to five, after a divisional playoff weekend during which the Packers beat the Cowboys, the Seahawks hammered the Panthers, the Colts got past the Broncos, and the Patriots edged the Ravens.

On Sunday, the Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game at 3:05 p.m., and then the Patriots will host the Colts in the AFC title game at 6:40.

The winners will face off in the Super Bowl -- the 49th edition of that game -- on Feb. 1 near Phoenix. Seattle won the Super Bowl last season, at MetLife Stadium.

So which former Jets players and coaches remain alive in these playoffs?

There are a couple household names, and a couple less-prominent names. Scroll through the photo gallery at the top of this post to see them all.

Jets linebacker Quinton Coples on Jameis Winston's off-field issues: 'I wouldn't judge him based upon that' (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media January 12, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/jets_linebacker_quinton_coples_on_jameis_winstons_off-field_troubles_i_wouldnt_judge_him_based_upon.html

Quinton Coples and Jameis Winston might soon be teammates with the Jets, so it seems reasonable to wonder: What does Coples think of Winston?

Coples, entering his fourth season as a Jets linebacker, is well aware of the on-field and off-field adjustment Winston would face in New York, if the Jets decide to draft the Florida State quarterback.

But despite concerns about Winston's character and off-field decision making, Coples thinks highly of Winston as a player, and believes he will adjust fine to the NFL lifestyle.

"I think he's an incredible athlete," Coples said. "I think his numbers speak for themselves, and how he persevered through tough times and made plays out of nothing. As far as personal (stuff), I just think he's just a kid, man. He's enjoyed his college life. When you're under a microscope, where people are always looking at you, or you're the Heisman (Trophy winner) or (in) the national championship, people always look at you and they try to put you in a category that's not really him. I think he's just enjoying college, and obviously, some things, he could have did better. But we all make mistakes. I wouldn't judge him based upon that, but solely based upon his athletic ability."

NFL teams most certainly will judge Winston based on both of those things, as they think about whether to draft him. Being the face of an NFL franchise, as a starting quarterback is, largely hinges on a player's ability to make wise decisions off the field. Leading up to the draft, Winston will face a significant vetting process about his off-field issues.

But once Winston gets to the NFL, Coples thinks he will be OK. To nobody's surprise, Winston turned pro last week, ending a college career in which he played two years, and won the Heisman and a national title in his first season playing, 2013.

"I think he will understand that this is a professional league," Coples said. "You represent your name, you represent the team and you represent the shield. I think that he will get it. We all were in college and we all did something crazy, whether it was publicized in the media or whether it was just known around campus. Somehow, some way, we did something crazy. That's just what college is. Everybody goes through it. It's a learning process. That's how you mature. That's how you hit your manhood. I don't think it'll be a problem for him (adjusting to the NFL). I think he will take the necessary steps to be a great professional athlete, and I wish him the best."

Coples spoke Thursday morning after an appearance at Newark's Malcolm X Shabazz High School, during which Coples honored students who achieved academic success, or made significant improvement. It was part of the Quinton Coples Foundation's Student of the Month program.

During an interview Thursday, Coples also discussed his admiration for Jets head coaching candidate Dan Quinn, and the possibility that the Jets might pick up the fifth-year option on Coples' rookie contract.

Near the end of last season, Jets veteran quarterback Michael Vick, who seems unlikely to re-sign with the team for 2015, offered some candid thoughts about Winston. Vick -- who has faced plenty of (well-deserved) scrutiny and criticism of his own, after going to prison for running a dog-fighting ring -- said Winston is "the future of the NFL," but admitted Winston could have a "hard" time thriving in New York.

It is unclear just where Winston will be drafted. The Jets pick sixth, and there are three teams ahead of them that could pick a quarterback: Tampa Bay at No. 1, Tennessee at No. 2 and Washington at No. 5.

Some mock drafts project the Jets to select Winston, while others have them taking Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who will face Ohio State on Monday night in college football's national championship game. Based only on football skills, and not off-field stuff, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay believes Winston is a better NFL prospect than Mariota.

Winston's off-field missteps (and alleged missteps) range from the absurd (stealing crab legs and yelling an obscene phrase in public) to the very serious. He was accused of rape, but never formally charged, after what is widely regarded as a botched investigation by Tallahassee, Fla., police. Winston was also cleared by a school disciplinary panel.

Jets running back Chris Johnson had two guns during misdemeanor arrest, per arrest report (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media January 12, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/jets_running_back_chris_johnson_had_two_guns_during_misdemeanor_arrest_in_florida_per_arrest_report.html

Orlando police on Monday released the arrest affidavit for Jets running back Chris Johnson. They also released his mug shot, which you can see at the top of this post.

He was arrested Friday in his hometown of Orlando, Fla., on a misdemeanor weapons charge: open carrying of weapons/firearms. It is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida.

Johnson was actually in possession of two handguns, according to the affidavit. In their initial statement to reporters Saturday, Orlando police mentioned only one gun. (You can see the complete affidavit document at the bottom of this post.)

Officer Michael Mislang made the arrest after he noticed Johnson's white, two-door vehicle, with a Florida license plate "JUICE28," fail to stop at a stop sign around 8:56 p.m., according to the affidavit.

Here is what Mislang wrote in his report:

The vehicle just drove through the stop sign and proceeded to turn left (east) onto West Jefferson Street. I conducted a traffic stop at West Pine Street and South Parramore Avenue and the following events occurred.

I approached the vehicle on the driver's side. I immediately saw the handle of a handgun on the floor between the driver's feet. It was a black semi-automatic handgun. I told the driver, later identified as suspect Christopher Johnson, not to reach towards the firearm and informed him that I saw it. I also noticed a black backpack with $100 bills on the outside as a design sitting between his feet as well.

The main zippered compartment was unzipped and open revealing the inside of the bag. I asked suspect Johnson if there were any other weapons in the vehicle and he replied, "No, that is the only one." I identified the front right passenger of the vehicle as Kenneth Turner. I could tell that the firearm was not securely encased and it was readily available for immediate use. I removed both occupants of the vehicle for my safety

When I removed suspect Johnson he seemed hesitant to tell me something. I asked him if he wanted to tell me anything and he replied, "Yeah, there is actually a second gun in the bag on the floor. I asked him which bag he was referring to. He replied, "That backpack that was between my feet." Inside the backpack in the same unzipped compartment that was pulled open there was a black handgun.

Florida State Statute clearly states that it is unlawful for any person to openly carry on or about his or her person any firearm. The firearm that was sitting on the floor was in plain and open view and was not securely encased. It was readily accessible for immediate use. Also, the firearm that was in the backpack was not securely encased either because the bag was completely open.

The vehicle was released to family/friends on scene at the request of suspect Johnson. Suspect Johnson was present when the vehicle was released. The handgun that was on the floor is an FN 5.7mm. The handgun that was in the bag is a Glock 9mm.

News of Johnson's arrest was first reported by Erika Esola. A league source told Pro Football Talk that Johnson has a license to carry in Florida. But his arrest is related to open carrying, not to carrying without a license.

"We are aware and have no comment at this time, as this is a pending legal matter," a Jets team spokesman said Saturday.

Johnson rushed for 663 yards and one touchdown—both career-lows—in 2014, his first with the Jets after six years with the Titans, for whom he once rushed for 2,000 yards in a season. Both per overthecap.com, Johnson is due to make $3.5 million in base salary in 2015, but none of that is guaranteed, and the Jets have an additional $500,000 option on him that kicks in on Feb. 16, unless he is released before then.

Dan Quinn and Todd Bowles may be considered favorites to land the Jets' head coaching job, but the Jets still aren't done screening candidates.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the Jets intend to interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott on Wednesday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because he or she was not authorized to talk publicly.

News of the Jets' plans was first reported by Dan Graziano of ESPN.

An interesting twist worth noting: McDermott and Mike Maccagnan, who ought to be announced as the Jets' general manager fairly soon, have the same agent. So there's a chance Maccagnan could sit in on McDermott's interview.

The Jets reportedly were prepared to fly to Seattle on Saturday night to offer Quinn, the Seahawks' defensive coordinator and a Morristown native, the job. If nothing else, their interest in speaking to McDermott is a sign they want to keep their options open, considering they cannot make Quinn an offer until after the Seahawks' season, which could end with the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. The danger in waiting for Quinn is the increased difficulty in finding quality assistants at that time.

Later Monday, it emerged that the Jets planned to interview Bowles, the Cardinals' defensive coordinator and an Elizabeth native who also once served as the Eagles' D-coordinator, a second time.

McDermott has been the Panthers' defensive coordinator since 2011. His 2014 season ended Saturday, with the Panthers' loss to the Seahawks in a playoff game. The Panthers' defense ranked 15th in DVOA in 2014, according to Football Outsiders. It was third in 2013, 11th in 2012, and dead last in 2011.

A graduate of La Salle College High School in suburban Philadelphia, McDermott, 40, began his career with the Eagles as a scouting administrative coordinator in 1998 and eventually worked his way up the coaching ranks to defensive backs coach/defensive coordinator in 2009. The Eagles fired him after the 2010 season, but he landed with the Panthers just two days later.

McDermott is the seventh confirmed candidate to interview for the Jets' job.

Todd Bowles of Arizona Cardinals to interview with Jets, Atlanta Falcons a second time, source confirms (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media January 12, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/todd_bowles_of_arizona_cardinals_to_interview_with_jets_and_atlanta_falcons_a_second_time_source_con.html

The Jets have to wait to hire Dan Quinn, but they're moving forward with the other favorite in their head coaching search.

A person with knowledge of the situation said Monday the Jets plan to interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles a second time. That person spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity because he or she was not authorized to talk publicly on the matter.

Bowles, an Elizabeth native who emerged as a favorite along with Quinn over the weekend, is the first—and, thus far, only—confirmed head coaching candidate to get a follow-up interview with the Jets. His

Page 9: January 13, 2015prod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2015/01-January… · The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets

first was last Wednesday. Bowles has also interviewed with the Falcons, 49ers, and Bears, and the person familiar with the situation confirmed he is slated for a second interview with the Falcons.

The day those second interviews will take place is not yet determined, the person added.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was first to report that the Jets and Falcons would be talking to Bowles a second time.

The Jets may really want Quinn, the Seahawks' defensive coordinator and a Morristown native, and they reportedly were prepared to fly to Seattle on Saturday night to offer him the job had the Seahawks lost to the Panthers in their playoff game. But, by rule, they cannot interview Quinn a second time until next week, and they cannot hire him until the Seahawks' season ends, something that may not happen until after the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. This creates a possible problem because it may be harder at that time to find quality assistants to fill out a coaching staff.

As a result, the Jets are keeping their options open, both by sitting down with Bowles a second time and by adding another candidate, Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who will interview for the first time on Wednesday.

The Jets are expected to hire Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their general manager soon. Maccagnan and McDermott have the same agent.

Bowles just finished his second season as the Cardinals' defensive coordinator after serving in the same role with the Eagles in 2012. Per Football Outsiders, the Cardinals' D was seventh in the NFL in DVOA in 2014.

Jets haven't requested interview with ex-Denver Broncos coach John Fox, despite report he declined it (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media January 13, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/former_denver_broncos_coach_john_fox_declines_jets.html

(UPDATE: The Jets actually have not yet requested an interview with John Fox. Moreover, Fox would be willing to speak with the Jets if they do reach out, according to a source with knowledge of Fox's thinking.)

Former Denver coach John Fox has declined the Jets' request to interview for their head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

It seemed likely that the Jets would at least reach out to Fox, who mutually parted ways with the Broncos earlier Monday, because he is now the most experienced head coaching candidate available. But Fox basically said no thanks immediately.

Charley Casserly, the former NFL general manager who is consulting Jets owner Woody Johnson on his coach and GM searches, went on ESPN New York radio on Monday and said he was not surprised that Fox and the Broncos had a mutual split.

"Not based on the information that we had heard," Casserly said. "There's a lot of different stories that were going around. Some we heard that [Broncos GM John] Elway would like Fox out. Some we heard that Fox would like to be out, for various reasons. I also heard that there was a potential out in his contract.

"All these things are second-hand stories, which isn't something that I had to personally worry about reporting. If I was doing my NFL Network [duties], I'd have to go check them out and see whether they were true. So it's not a surprise to me that it happened, based on all the things that we had heard."

It is unclear why Fox declined to interview with the Jets. Does he feel good about landing one of the other available jobs?

In addition to the Jets and Broncos, the four other teams with openings are the 49ers, Raiders, Bears and Falcons. The Bills' job has been filled by ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan.

But what remains clear is that Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles are still the leading candidates for the Jets' vacancy.

The Jets face significant competition for both Quinn and Bowles.

Quinn also has interviewed with the 49ers, Bears, Falcons and Bills. The Jets and 49ers are reportedly the favorites to land him. But now, the Broncos also want to speak with Quinn, according to Schefter.

Bowles also has interviewed with the Falcons, Bears and 49ers. He has a second interview scheduled with Atlanta this week.

The Jets were reportedly ready to offer Quinn the job if Seattle lost on Saturday in the divisional round of the playoffs, but Seattle won.

Bowles, who is available to be hired at any time, will have a second interview with the Jets this week.

Bowles is the first Jets coaching candidate to get a second interview. The Jets can interview Quinn for a second time next week, if they want to, regardless of whether Seattle wins the NFC title game.

But if Seattle makes the Super Bowl, the Jets can't officially offer Quinn their job until after the Feb. 1 game.

The Jets have now interviewed six candidates, once each, to replace Ryan. That includes in-house candidate Anthony Lynn, the Jets' running backs coach under Ryan, who essentially has zero shot at getting the job.

While Bowles has a second interview this week, the Jets also will interview a seventh confirmed candidate: Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

With Fox declining the Jets' interview request, they won't get to eight interviewed candidates, at least not yet. Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak also declined to interview for any head coaching openings this offseason, because he is staying in Baltimore. The Jets had requested an interview with him.

Ex-Broncos coach John Fox would interview with Jets if asked, per source (Dom Cosentino) NJ advanced Media January 13, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/ex-broncos_coach_john_fox_would_interview_with_jet.html

It's officially the NFL's silly season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday night that John Fox, who parted ways with the Broncos earlier in the day after four seasons as head coach, had turned down an interview request with the Jets for their vacant head coaching position.

A few things: The Jets have not, in fact, reached out to Fox to ask for an interview. And according to a person familiar with Fox's thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity because he or she was not authorized to talk publicly on the matter, Fox would be willing to talk if the Jets were to reach out to him. Which—once more, with feeling—they still haven't done. That person added that Fox intends to keep all of his options open. And Schefter, in a noble nod to transparency, later acknowledged he had been wrong.

Make sense?

In addition to the Jets and Broncos, the 49ers, Falcons, Bears, and Raiders are all still looking for a head coach. Fox, who coached the Panthers and the Broncos to the Super Bowl 10 years apart and has a record of 127-95 (including playoffs) in 13 seasons as an NFL head coach, figures to get plenty of interest.

The Jets have already interviewed six candidates for their vacant head coaching position. One of them, Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, plans to interview for a second time. And a seventh candidate, Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, is slated to interview for the first time on Wednesday.

NEW YORK POST

Next Jets GM must prove he’s not Idzik — by getting Mariota (Steve Serby) New York Post January 13, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/01/12/next-jets-gm-must-prove-hes-not-idzik-by-getting-mariota/

When the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed, and Mike Maccagnan is hired as the new Jets GM, he will be entering a brave new world the likes of which he has never experienced.

And my welcome message to him:

Good luck, buddy.

You’ll need it.

Allow me to welcome you to my town.

It’s the best place to win and the worst place to lose, in case you hadn’t heard.

So it’s better for you to win.

You will be inheriting a fan base that last got to celebrate a Super Bowl championship 46 years ago Monday.

Nah, no pressure.

The good news — if there is any good news aside from your promotion and pay raise — is you aren’t exactly following in Bill Parcells’ shoes. Or even Rex Ryan’s shoes. You’re following in John Idzik’s shoes.

Which means you’ll get a brief honeymoon period. But a word to the wise — if you draft a Vernon Gholston, or a Stephen Hill, or a Dee Milliner, or a Geno Smith, you might not want to look up at the sky at practice or in your new office. Because a Fire Mike Maccagnan banner will be flying overhead.

But you’ve been a scout, you know personnel, so no worries there, right? You’ll be able to tell a Chris Ivory from a Chris Christie, right?

Now who’s your coach?

Page 12: January 13, 2015prod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2015/01-January… · The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets

It is only the most critical decision you will make. Because if you get it wrong, you may not get a second chance to hire a coach.

Your owner, Woody Johnson, isn’t 80 years old the way previous owner Leon Hess was when he summoned Parcells, but he wants results now. The poor guy has missed the playoffs four years in a row.

Between us, I’m going through a syndrome known around here as Rex withdrawal. Dan Quinn is in high demand, but you can’t talk to him until next week at the earliest. I like Todd Bowles, I like Doug Marrone, but I haven’t interviewed them yet.

Whomever you pick, make sure he has armadillo skin. As I mentioned earlier, this can be a town without pity. If he is insecure and paranoid, he will have no chance here.

You inherit a team in desperate need of a franchise quarterback, and given the uninspiring free-agent crop, someone to effectively teach Smith will be imperative. If the best man for the head coaching job comes from the defensive side of the ball, you better make sure his offensive coordinator is an innovative teacher and a nurturer.

And please, don’t be afraid to be bold on draft day. The previous GM twiddled his thumbs, kept all 12 of his draft picks last spring, and blew it.

You have the sixth pick. No way Marcus Mariota drops in your lap, because good fortune like that hardly ever happens to the Jets.

So trade up for Marcus Mariota and get your franchise quarterback!

It will be refreshing to know that you and your head coach will have a shared vision. Not a short-term vision from him and a longer-term vision from you, thank you very much. That’s the true definition of “joined at the hip.”

The salary cap will be going up, so you’ll have more than $40 million in room. Now, no GM in his right mind would sit on $20 million, much less $40 million, so for starters, go get a Randall Cobb in the likely event you’ll be releasing Percy Harvin. And since you’re the Jets’ long-awaited personnel guy, it would be a good idea to find a trusted cap guy to assist you.

The scouting report on you indicates that you’re not a spotlight guy. That’s OK. Talk is cheap, GM the game. Or something like that. Just know the previous GM didn’t do himself any favors by being a virtual recluse.

So there you go, a little primer for you as you embark on this new journey.

Just don’t go planning any itinerary for the Canyon of Heroes just yet. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady still rule the AFC East. Ryan up in Buffalo will be motivated to stick it to the Jets. Ryan Tannehill is on the rise in Miami, where Mike Tannenbaum, also motivated to stick it to the Jets, is the new major domo.

Good luck, buddy.

You’ll need it.

Jets’ next steps after John Fox hits the market (Brian Costello) New York Post January 13, 2015

The Jets are not sitting on their hands waiting for Dan Quinn.

The team will interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on Wednesday for a second time, according to a source. Bowles is flying to New Jersey on Tuesday night and will interview again on Wednesday. The Jets were extremely impressed with Bowles when he spoke to them last week, and he and Quinn are the favorites for the job.

The Jets also will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for the job on Wednesday, according to a source.

John Fox split from the Broncos on Monday, but the Jets have not requested an interview, according to a source. The speculation in NFL circles is that Fox is going to wind up as the Bears head coach.

McDermott has led top-10 defenses in each of the last three years in Carolina. The 40-year-old spent 12 seasons with the Eagles, rising from an administrative role to defensive coordinator before getting fired after the 2010 season.

He will be the seventh person to interview for the opening created when the Jets fired Rex Ryan at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, on the general manager front, the Jets still had not made an official announcement, but things are on track and Mike Maccagnan could be named GM on Tuesday. Maccagnan has been meeting with the Jets since Friday and may take part in the interviews with Bowles and McDermott on Wednesday.

The Jets have their eyes on Quinn, the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks, for the head coaching job, but cannot offer him the job until Seattle’s season is over. The Seahawks face the Packers on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.

If the Seahawks lose Sunday, the Jets could hire him Sunday night, if the two sides agreed. If they win, the Jets could interview him again next week, if the Seahawks grant permission. They could not make him an offer, though, until after the Super Bowl in three weeks. It becomes difficult to put a coaching staff together if you wait until February.

Quinn also is a hot candidate for other openings. The Jets need to determine whether they think they can land him or if they need to turn to an alternate choice.

The Falcons, Bears, Broncos and 49ers are all interested in Quinn. Similarly, Bowles is in demand. The Falcons reportedly scheduled a second interview with him for Wednesday and he is seen as one of the top targets for their opening.

The Jets have stayed away from the veteran-coach route. The only coaches who have interviewed with the Jets who have been head coaches for a full season in the NFL are Tom Cable and Doug Marrone. Fox also may have a choice of jobs and not be interested in the Jets.

The NFL draft season really kicks off next week in Alabama at the Senior Bowl. You would think the Jets would want to have a front office in place by then. Currently Rod Graves is overseeing the football operations. Terry Bradway is representing the Jets at the East-West Shrine Game this week.

Jets RB Chris Johnson lied to cops about second gun (Brian Costello) New York Post January 12, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/01/12/jets-rb-chris-johnson-lied-to-cops-about-second-gun/

Jets running back Chris Johnson actually had two semiautomatic handguns in his car when he was arrested Friday in Orlando, Fla., according to the arrest report.

Page 14: January 13, 2015prod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2015/01-January… · The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets

The report revealed some new details about the arrest that led to a misdemeanor weapons charge for Johnson.

An officer pulled Johnson over after watching him fail to stop at a stop sign just before 9 p.m. Friday. When the officer approached the car, he saw the handle of a handgun on the floor between Johnson’s legs along with a backpack with “$100 bills on the outside as a design,” according to the report.

The officer asked Johnson if there were other weapons in the car, and Johnson said, “No, that is the only one.” The officer then asked Johnson and a passenger to step out of the car, the report says.

As Johnson left the car he seemed to have something else he wanted to tell him, the officer wrote in the report.

“I asked him if he wanted to tell me anything and he replied, ‘Yeah, there is actually a second gun in the bag on the floor,'” the officer wrote.

A second semiautomatic handgun was found in the backpack. The guns were a Glock 9 mm and FN 5.7 mm, according to the report.

Johnson was charged with open carrying of firearms. He was booked into the Orange County Jail and then released on $250 bond, according to the report.

The Jets signed Johnson to a two-year, $4 million contract last April. It was doubtful even before this incident the Jets would bring him back. Now, it seems highly unlikely.

Johnson rushed for just 663 yards and one touchdown this season. He was a shell of the player he was in Tennessee when he once rushed for 2,000 yards.

Jets to interview Panthers coordinator while they wait for Quinn (Brian Costello) New York Post January 12, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/01/12/jets-to-interview-panthers-coordinator-for-head-coach/

The Jets are hoping to land Dan Quinn as their next head coach, but they have not stopped searching for alternatives if he goes elsewhere.

The team will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for the head coach opening on Wednesday, a source confirmed. The Jets are also bringing back Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for a second interview, according to a source. It is unclear what day that interview will take place.

McDermott has led top-10 defenses in each of the last three years in Carolina. The 40-year-old spent 12 seasons with the Eagles rising from an administrative role to defensive coordinator before getting fired after the 2010 season.

He will be the seventh person to interview for the opening created when the Jets fired Rex Ryan at the end of the year.

The Jets want to hire Quinn, the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks, but cannot offer him the job until Seattle’s season is over. The Seahawks face the Packers on Sunday in the NFC Championship game.

Quinn also is a hot candidate generating interest from multiple teams. The Jets need to determine whether they think they can land him or if they need to turn to an alternate choice.

Bowles impressed the Jets in his first interview last Wednesday. He is also on the radar of a number of other teams, including the Falcons and Bears.

The Jets are expected to name Mike Maccagnan as their new general manager on Monday. It is possible Maccagnan may have asked for McDermott to be added to the interview list. While owner Woody Johnson has been leading the coaching search, aided by consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, the new GM will have some say in whom the new coach will be.

Maccagnan also may sit in on Bowles’ interview.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

NY Jets top coaching choice could be intrigued by Denver Broncos job opening (Gary Myers) New York Daily News January 13, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/myers-jets-worry-quinn-intrigued-broncos-article-1.2075653

Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is the Jets No. 1 choice to replace Rex Ryan, and the Jets so far are his No. 1 choice for his first head coaching job.

Quinn is from New Jersey, is a former Jets assistant, and other than the fact he’s a defensive coach instead of a state-of-the-art offensive coach, he seems like a very good fit.

But there could be a new player in the Quinn Derby that could impact the Jets.

The Broncos, who parted with John Fox on Monday, want to interview Quinn. Whether that ultimately changes how Quinn feels about the Jets will be played out in the next week or so.

Quinn also interviewed with the Bears, Falcons, 49ers and Bills, who have since hired Rex Ryan. The Jets emerged as the leader and Woody Johnson was prepared to fly to Seattle on his private plane Saturday night, presumably to offer Quinn the job, if the Seahawks had lost to the Panthers.

If the Seahawks lose to the Packers in the NFC title game, Quinn is free to take a head coaching job. If the Seahawks win, there is a window next week when teams can speak to Quinn in Seattle, but by rule can’t offer him a job until after the Super Bowl.

The Jets plan to be in Seattle early in the week. The Broncos will have their first chance to speak with Quinn. If the Seahawks make the Super Bowl, the Jets can’t officially offer him the job next week, but it’s not like Roger Goodell will be sitting in the room monitoring the conversation if Quinn and the Jets say they want each other.

Denver is an excellent organization, and John Elway can be persuasive — he talked Peyton Manning into coming there in 2012 instead of Tennessee or San Francisco — but with Manning perhaps on the way out and Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas scheduled to be free agents, it’s not quite as appealing a job as it might otherwise seem.

It’s not a strong year for candidates, but Quinn is red-hot. With so many teams after him, it will be a positive reflection on Johnson and what he is trying to build if he can bring him home.

RED HOT FOX

Fox hunting season is officially open, but the Daily News learned Monday night that the Jets did not call Fox to request an interview, but have not ruled out doing so. But I think he’s going to the Bears.

Fox is a big name, one of only six coaches to take two different franchises to the Super Bowl. He’s a great guy, a coach his players genuinely like.

Page 16: January 13, 2015prod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2015/01-January… · The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets

16 | P a g e

The knee jerk reaction for the Jets: Go get Fox.

Reality: He’s the wrong coach at the wrong time for the wrong team.

If Jim Harbaugh, a brilliant offensive mind, had made himself available before he went to Michigan, Johnson should have written him a blank check. The Jets need a complete rebuild on offense — Harbaugh could have fixed them. Fox is a defensive coach and needs a team with a quarterback who is capable of winning now. He is also a recycled coach with questionable game-management skills.

Why the Bears for Fox? Former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi.

Fox would have been the Giants head coach in 2001, elevated from defensive coordinator, if Jim Fassel didn’t get on a run late in the 2000 season and make the playoffs and then the Super Bowl. When Marvin Demoff, Fassel’s agent, started playing hardball with GM Ernie Accorsi on a contract extension, Accorsi told Demoff not to push him too far because he could walk down the hall and hire Fassel’s replacement in two minutes.

He was referring to Fox.

Accossi was a consultant to Elway when he hired Fox in 2011. He’s been a consultant in Chicago this year and the Bears, who recently hired Ryan Pace from the Saints as their GM, still need a head coach. I would not be surprised if Accorsi steers Fox to Chicago. The Bears can use Fox’s defensive help, and he can get through to Jay Cutler.

What happened in Denver with Fox?

Whether he thought the run was over because Manning is either done or just about done, or the Broncos felt he had taken them as a far as he could, or there was friction in Denver, it shows once again how quickly relationships can change. Fox received a contract extension through 2016 after helping the Broncos get to the Super Bowl last season, even though they lost 43-8 to the Seahawks.

One other name to keep in mind for Denver: Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak said Sunday he wants to stay in Baltimore, but Elway’s former backup with the Broncos could change his mind if his old friend calls and says he needs him.

RYAN’S HOPE

Ryan will be introduced as the Bills new coach Wednesday and Mike Tannenbaum will start his job as the Dolphins executive vice president of football operations on Feb. 1. They’ve both recovered from getting fired by Johnson.

The problem with Ryan and Tannenbaum remaining in the AFC East is that Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are still in the AFC East and just qualified for their ninth conference title game in the 14 years that Brady has been Belichick’s starting quarterback. In Ryan’s six years with the Jets, the Pats finished first six times.

Tannenbaum is in a better situation. Better weather, for sure, and at least the hope that Ryan Tannehill will develop into a playoff quarterback. Ryan inherits an excellent defense, an unproven general manager, no quarterback and does not have a No. 1 draft pick.

Ryan is now the coach of one of the two or three teams that have a worse quarterback situation than the Jets. Ryan needed two things in his new job: a general manager with a strong track record in personnel and a proven quarterback. He gets neither in Buffalo.

Clearly, Ryan panicked and took the first job offered rather than perhaps sitting out a year and risk never getting another head coaching offer. He used to work for Brian Billick in Baltimore. Even though Billick is

a Super Bowl winning coach, he never got another head coaching job after he was fired following the 2007 season.

NY Jets want Seahawks' Dan Quinn, but still keeping coaching options open (Seth Walder) New York Daily News January 13, 2014

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/quinn-jets-target-team-keeping-options-open-article-1.2075642

While the Jets wait on Dan Quinn, they’re still kicking the tires on other options.

The Jets actually added a new head coaching candidate Monday, as the team will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, according to a source. In addition, the Jets have scheduled a second interview with Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

It makes sense that the Jets would continue to look at other candidates, even if they want Quinn, because he seems to have so many suitors. The Seahawks’ defensive coordinator can’t be hired until Seattle’s season is over, and even then, there’s no guarantee the Jets would

land him considering he is the hottest coaching candidate on the market. It sounds like he gained yet another suitor on Monday, as the Broncos would like to interview him after parting ways with John Fox, ESPN reported.

The Daily News previously reported that the Jets are Quinn’s first choice. They are so serious about him that they had discussed flying to Seattle if the Seahawks had lost on Saturday to try to lock him up, according to sources.

It’s worth noting that Fox now is a free agent coach as well, but as of Monday night the Jets had not requested an interview with him, according to a source. Fox seems to make the most sense for the Bears, especially given that he was the Giants’ defensive coordinator when Ernie Accorsi, who is consulting for the Bears this offseason, was the Giants’ general manager.

The Jets are still expected to hire Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their general manager, though all was quiet on that front on Monday as the team has yet to make an official announcement.

McDermott has been the Panthers defensive coordinator since 2011 and Carolina has had a top-10 defense in each of the last three seasons. Prior to that he spent 12 seasons in the Eagles organization, including two years as the defensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010.

Bowles is another hot candidate that has drawn interest from several teams this offseason. The Jets were rebuffed by Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, who decided to remain in Baltimore.

TROUBLE FOR CJ2K: Chris Johnson actually had two guns in his vehicle at the time of his arrest on Friday, and initially lied about the second one, according to the arrest affidavit released by Orlando Police.

According to the report, Officer Michael Mislang stopped Johnson after he failed to halt at a stop sign. When Misland approached the vehicle, he saw a firearm between Johnson’s feet.

“I asked suspect Johnson if there were any other weapons in the vehicle and he replied, ‘No, that is the only one,’” the report reads.

Page 18: January 13, 2015prod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2015/01-January… · The Seahawks will host the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, meaning the Jets

Daily Clips Cont.

18 | P a g e

However, when Johnson and passenger Kenneth Turner exited the vehicle Mislang sensed that Johnson might want to tell him something. At that point, Johnson informed him that there was another firearm in the backpack that was between his feet.

Johnson received a second degree misdemeanor charge for openly carrying firearms. Both guns were considered as being openly carried.

“The firearm that was sitting on the floor was in plain and open view and was not securely encased. It was readily accessible for immediate use,” the report reads. “Also, the firearm that was in the backpack was not securely encased either because the bag was completely open.”

The first gun, seen on the floor, was an FN 5.7mm. The second one in the bag was a Glock 9 mm.

The report notes that Johnson’s license plate was “JUICE28.”

ProFootballTalk reported that Johnson, 29, had a license to carry a firearm in Florida.

The Jets hold a team option on Johnson that they are unlikely to exercise after his disappointing season in which he managed just 663 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Jets Set to Hire Mike Maccagnan as General Manager (Ben Shpigel) New York Times January 12, 2015

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/13/sports/football/new-york-jets-set-to-hire-mike-maccagnan-as-general-manager.html?ref=football&_r=0

As the Jets enter what their owner Woody Johnson has called a critical juncture for the organization, they are set to entrust the football operations department to Mike Maccagnan, who is on the verge of being hired as the team’s next general manager, according to a person familiar with the Jets’ thinking.

Maccagnan, formerly the Houston Texans’ director of college scouting, emerged from a field of seven candidates interviewed over a two-week search that centered on executives with vast experience in personnel. Maccagnan was the only one who interviewed a second time with Jets officials, dining Friday night with Johnson and staying the weekend in New Jersey.

An agreement has not been completed yet, but the Jets are confident that they will strike one.

In selecting Maccagnan, the Jets corrected a mistake made two years ago by hiring John Idzik, who was experienced in football administration but not player evaluation. Maccagnan has worked in N.F.L. personnel departments since 1994, rising from a college scout with the Washington Redskins to his last position in Houston, which he had held since 2011.

Maccagnan, a native of Hightstown, N.J., has a strong relationship with Charley Casserly, one of two former general managers Johnson enlisted as consultants to guide him through the process of finding replacements for Idzik and Rex Ryan.

Casserly hired Maccagnan as a Redskins scout in 1994. When Casserly became general manager of an expansion franchise in Houston in 2000, Maccagnan accompanied him, and he was promoted to coordinator of college scouting a few months after his arrival. He was then named the Texans’ director of college scouting.

All along the Jets preferred to hire a general manager before a coach, but they conducted concurrent searches for competitive reasons. Doing so allowed them to develop a feel for coaching candidates they liked, and to envision potential tandems that could restore the Jets to prominence.

The Jets want to hire Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who cannot receive, or accept, an offer until after the Seahawks’ season ends.

Bowles to talk to Jets, Falcons again (Josh Weinfuss) ESPN New York January 12, 2015

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is one step closer to becoming an NFL head coach.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who also met with the Bears and 49ers last week, will get second interviews for the Jets' and Falcons' head-coach openings, according to a source.

The Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets have scheduled second interviews with Bowles, according to a source. No other teams have requested a second meeting, a source said.

The Jets also have scheduled an interview with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott on Wednesday, according to sources.

Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is also high atop both teams' lists but he can't be offered a job until Seattle's season is over. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Jets were prepared to fly to Seattle on Saturday night had the Seahawks lost to the Panthers to try to hire Quinn as their new coach.

Bowles spent last week crisscrossing the country, interviewing with the Jets on Wednesday, the Chicago Bears on Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers on Friday and Falcons on Saturday.

His meeting with Chicago, which was conducted by new general manager Ryan Pace, "went well," according to a source.

According to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure, Bowles' interview with Atlanta lasted about five hours. McClure also reported that Bowles is considered to be one of Atlanta's top candidates.

Bowles, a former NFL defensive back for eight seasons with the Washington Redskins and 49ers, has enjoyed success as a coordinator. He has spent the past two seasons in that role for the Cardinals after doing the same for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Last season, Bowles' defense ranked sixth in the NFL in yards allowed per game, and first against the run, while allowing the fewest yards in team history for a 16-game season (1,351). This past season, the Cardinals were 24th in yards allowed per game and 13th in rushing yards allowed, but still made a quite an impact as a playoff team. Bowles' crew boasted the league's fifth-best scoring defense (18.7 ppg.) and third-best red-zone percentage (43.9 percent).

Bart Scott thinks Rex Ryan got a raw deal with the New York Jets, a scenario where he was doomed to fail.

The Madbacker, who spent four years with the Jets as a linebacker after Ryan recruited him to New York from the Baltimore Ravens, saw a situation over the past season where his former head coach was set-up to lose. The Jets, after an 8-8 season a year ago that led to playoff expectations for 2014, had a lackluster postseason where they failed to net the multiple impact players needed on both sides of the ball. This led to a disappointing 4-12 season that cost Ryan and second-year general manager John Idzik their jobs.

And Scott tells Metro that Idzik, not Ryan, who was courted by the Buffalo Bills and will be their next head coach, was the one to blame. It was Idzik who failed to find impact players in the draft and it was Idzik who didn't get the marquee free agents into the facility and make sure that they left with signatures on contracts.

None of that is Ryan's fault, Scott said, and yet Ryan paid the price with his job.

“He was set up to fail, I believe. He didn't have the pieces to be successful,” Scott told Metro about Ryan. “You can't ask a safety to play corner or a corner to drop down to play dime or linebacker. In that system you need certain things and he wasn't given those things. He tried to make the best of what he had. If he got this team to 8-8 this year, he would have deserved to be coach of the year. That's like having a racecar driver and giving him a Honda Civic engine and not a Ferrari. They had the opportunity to spend some money – not all but some – they still would have been sitting nice.”

Much was expected of the Jets this past year. They had plenty of cap space and a dozen draft picks. With a few holes to fill, it seemed like the Jets could spend and plug a few starters in via free agency and be a competitive team. At the very least, with some upgrading, a team that was .500 in 2013 could have been a Wild Card contender.

Instead, the Jets didn't open up their wallets as reports filed in of Idzik moving at “glacial speed” on the free agent market. Scott noted that Idzik “did a tremendous job for the next GM from a salary cap [perspective] so they can build a team the way they want.”

But he also was critical of the Jets former general manager and the energy – or lack thereof – that he brought to Jets Drive.

“Honestly what I heard and what I got is that Idzik is the type of guy that drains the energy from the building," Scott said. "You have some people who bring energy to a building; he took it away. It was a place where people didn't enjoy coming to work.

“We all know that not everything is going to be fun; you have to work and perform. But if you don't create an environment that isn't fun, guys aren't staying around, building chemistry. They aren't going to be getting treatment, talking about plays and watching film. When practice is over, they get out of there. From what I get, guys didn't want to be there. They wanted to leave there. When I was there, guys were there so late and the coaches were leaving before us. It was great.”

Scott is currently an analyst with CBS on The NFL Today. He has been critical of the direction of the Jets since early in the season.

It was Idzik who bore the brunt of negativity from most of the fanbase, including a movement that saw billboards pop-up posturing for his dismissal, as well as planes flying over the practice facility demanding his termination. Not only did Idzik fail on the free agent market, he also failed in the draft as Scott alluded to. With 19 picks over the last two years, only defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson looks the part of a bona fide starter and contributor. Everyone else, including first round picks such as cornerback Dee Milliner and safety Calvin Pryor, have serious question marks.

Two years is a quick turnaround to bring in a general manager and then usher him out of the door. But Scott understands why owner Woody Johnson made that call.

“Do I really think two years is enough time to implement your plan? No," Scott said. "But you should have seen signs. He had 12 picks. With those picks, you better get impact players. They better produce.

“There are examples of guys getting results from the second or third round. They gave him free reign and he didn't show he can do better in the future. He didn't show that it was going in the right direction. You don't feel good about the state of the Jets. You do feel good about the state of the Giants. They have a centerpiece to build around.

“Look at Calvin Pryor. He didn't really do anything this year. Look at all the guys picked after him. Someone has to answer for that. This roster is bare. You'd think they would have a better roster than Buffalo? I don't think so. Do they have more talent than Miami? No. They definitely don't than New England. They have less talent than anyone in the division. That's unacceptable.

“Where's the diamond in the rough? The guy you found in the fourth round? Fifth round? They don't have that. Imagine if this team had depth. You can't keep missing. You can't only build through free agency, you have to get something from the draft.”
