THE SIGHTS, SOUNDS, AND EXPERIENCES OF A MALAWI MISSION TRIP FROM FPCP MEMBER DEBBIE JOHNSON, A FIRST-TIME TRAVELLER This has been a truly eye-opening experience--amazing yet unbelievable at the same time! The area we served in is very poverty stricken, poor beyond our imagination but everyone we met is so happy, gracious and willing to share whatever they have. We received warm, heartfelt welcomes everywhere we went; their joyful faith so evident. We attended the dedication of a girl’s hostel, six years in the building of it. It now provides safe, protected housing for 66 high school age girls so that they are able to attend school and concentrate on their studies. We presented each girl with a personal care kit that contained about eight items--lotion, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Many were very surprised to hear that they didn’t have to share their items with anyone else! We were privileged to visit a couple of outlying village prayer houses, where we were greeted by singing, dancing women, young and old alike, several with small infants or young children tied on their backs. They were so happy to see us. We heard testimony from several men and women who are attending classes taught through Veritas Bible College. As each one completes the four levels of study, he or she will be able to preach and teach God’s word to others in their village with a better understanding of the Bible and their own faith to share. All were most grateful to receive this training. Another aspect of Veritas College includes instruction in better farming practices, allowing them to increase the harvest from their small plots of land. This improves the meager income to their families, as well as providing additional food to eat. The day that meant the most to me was when we followed a Marion Medical Mission Team to three different shallow well sites--two as they made the final well installations and the third at an existing well installed two years ago. At each village we were again greeted by groups of singing, dancing women and children who had been waiting for us out in the hot sun for quite a while. Men and young boys carried wooden benches and stools out to the well site for us to use while they sat in the dirt and grass. In about half an hour, the well was operational. The villagers crowded around as the proper use of the simple hand pump was demonstrated. The look of wonder and amazement on their faces will linger in my mind for a long time as they watched clean, clear water being pumped from their own well for the first time. We joined in their happy celebration. We were then led to the water hole they had been using. Not only was it much further away--a long walk carrying a full bucket on your head--but it was brown, dirty water at the bottom of an eight foot hole dug into the ground! Leaves and other debris floated in it. During the rainy season, run-off from the surrounding fields drained into the water, fertilizer, animal waste and all! Cholera outbreaks were quite common in the village. A new, clean well will eliminate that problem, as we heard from the village chief at the third location with the two-year-old well. There a live chicken was presented to the Marion Medical Team in appreciation. The two new installation villages had each offered a bag of ground nuts [peanuts] as thanks. A final [and exhausting!] morning was spent in the Mtenthera pre-school classroom with 40 three, four and five-year olds. That was a long morning for all involved! But at the same time, the children melted our hearts. It was a privilege to participate in and witness all of the sights, sounds and experiences of this mission trip. I will be forever grateful to have been included in this adventure of a lifetime! Prayerfully submitted by Debbie Johnson as insights from her first trip to Malawi

FPCP’s Malawi Partnerships We work hand in hand with local partners in Malawi. This approach allows us to build personal

relationships with our partners. We gain a much clearer understanding of partner ministries, we see

how our resources are being employed, and we receive personal faith enrichment through shared

worship, prayer and fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ in Africa.

Mtenthera CCAP Congregational Partnership

FPCP partnered with Mtenthera CCAP in 2010. Our mission is simple: to share the Gospel and

build up Christ’s kingdom between our two churches. We share prayers, visits and worship. We

employ Hussein Latif as our partnership coordinator in Malawi. We do joint projects to build up our

community of faith through training, church facility improvements, prayer, and worship. Our two

churches reached out to Mtenthera’s community in Malawi through the building of a dormitory at

the local secondary school that provides safe housing for over 100 girls.

Malawi Matters

FPCP supports Malawi Matters, a US/Malawi NGO that trains local teachers in HIV/AIDS

prevention as well as women’s and girl’s empowerment through training classes at Mtenthera

CCAP. Improved education and the health of women is a critical issue in Malawian society. Early

marriage, illiteracy and incidence of AIDS have all contributed to long term poverty and brokenness

in Malawi. FPCP supports Malawi Matters financially, through prayer and occasional volunteers.

Learn more at www.malawimatters.org.

Marion Medical Mission

Marion Medical Mission provides a cost effective, sustainable source of safe drinking water to the

extreme poor in rural communities in Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia. Low cost water wells are sited

in these communities, then built and maintained by the local communities themselves. Marion

Medical provides an infrastructure of local manufacturing shops to make parts, local field personnel

to guide communities in properly building and maintaining the wells, and international partners to

provide funding assistance and volunteers who go to Africa and assist in well installations. FPCP

members have raised funds to build wells and have also volunteered on installation teams in Africa.

Learn more at www.mmmwater.org.

Veritas College Malawi

Veritas provides holistic training to local churches in Bible literacy, livelihood training and

environmental care. Trainers are local pastors and teachers who work directly in rural communities.

Through FPCP’s support, hundreds of members at Mtenthera CCAP have been trained in these

subjects and now share their new knowledge throughout the church. Learn more at

WE NEED YOU!

FPCP is working more closely with our Presbytery and its program for foster children. This month we are praying for Aged Out Foster Children

Pray that every youth who ages out of the foster care system in your community would have the resources necessary to survive and to thrive as an adult living on their own.

That they would have a support system of adults in your community who will guide them through the process of aging out.

Pray that God would reveal ways for the people and churches in your community to tangibly support children who age out of the foster care system.

Presbyterian Women “…Led by the Holy Spirit, we reach out with hearts and hands to those in need, seeking to inspire

hope…” (from the FPCP Vision Statement)

January is National Mentoring Month, a great time to celebrate one of FPCP’s community outreach

programs: Kids Hope USA.

Since FPCP began an affiliation with this national program in 2015, over 30 local students have experienced the encouragement and support of a compassionate mentor from our church, many for multiple years. Both students and mentors have been positively impacted by the gift of hope. This year, eighteen students (16 at Bird Elementary, 2 at West Middle School) meet regularly during school hours with a mentor from FPCP. Elementary students meet their mentor once a week for about an hour. Middle School sixth graders (who can continue meeting with the mentor they were paired with in elementary school) meet during lunch about twice a month. Mentors give undivided attention and encouragement to their student. In turn, mentors are supported by Prayer Partners, who have agreed to regularly pray for the mentor, student and the mentor/student relationship. Who needs a mentor? As more than one Bird Elementary teacher has shared: “I wish every student could have a mentor.” Class sizes make it difficult for a teacher to give individualized attention to every student every day. Because of circumstances in some students’ lives, individualized attention is even more essential to helping them stay on a positive path. Among the many challenges students can experience: learning and attention issues, difficulty making friends or interacting with peers, and coping with family issues due to financial strains, divorce, illness or other major life changes, both positive and negative. Students are recommended for the program by the principal, teachers or counsellor. What does a mentor do? Mentors meet with their student regularly during the school year, at school, and spend time listening, helping with homework, playing games and modeling what it looks like to be a friend. Middle School students also have worked with their mentors to help others through organizing a fundraiser to build wells in Africa. Do mentors make a difference? Teachers report that mentored students have more confidence, miss less school, look forward to their mentor time and return to the classroom afterward, more “ready to learn.” Quotes from Bird Elementary: Teacher: “These students will look back years from now and remember this time you spent with them; you

showed them they matter.”

Mentor: “Today my student jumped up and down when he saw me in the hallway!”

Student: “My mentor is the best guy in the whole school.”

Principal: “We love our mentors and it warms my heart to see them in the hallways interacting with their

students. You definitely have a positive impact on our students.”

Tuesday Night Bible Study (7:15 to 9:00 p.m.)

14 Tuesdays, January 15 through April 16

When Christ Comes, by Max Lucado Pastor and Author Max Lucado writes, “Would you like to discuss the end of time and feel better because of it? Would you like to discuss life with no end? Space with no bounds? And what about Armageddon, the lake of fire, the mark of the beast? Over a 14-week period, we will be discussing “waiting forwardly,” using Max Lucado’s study of the New Testament Book of Revelation. Max Lucado believes the day Christ comes will be the “beginning of the very best.” Our primary task is to be prepared and peaceful while we wait. Reading ahead will help (each chapter averages 10 to 12 pages) but is not mandatory. Copies of the book (cost $15) will be available at the first class on Tuesday, January 15 for those that have registered for the study. The book includes a discussion guide and an endnotes section. Questions? Please contact Roger Cromwell, [email protected] or Nancy White, [email protected]
