Sponsored in part by the Workforce Development Agency, State of Michigan, Michigan Works!, through your local Workforce Development Board and Muskegon County Board of Commissioners. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities EEO/ADA/Employer/Programs - TTY# - 711.

Hot Jobs is developed through on-line job posting research. In addition to this data the following input is offered from Hot Jobs partner organizations and various employers representing the industries below:

HEALTHCARE continues to grow with the largest number of online job postings for 2014. Local industry movement towards increased ambulatory care provides employment opportunities at facilities outside of a hospital. Talent shortages continue due to high demand, training capacity and/or lack of job seeker education and experience. In addition to the technical training needed to secure employment in this industry, soft/life skills are also critical for success. See Michigan Works! Muskegon-Oceana for information regarding soft skills training.

MANUFACTURING remains a competitive industry and continues as a viable occupation. Updated technical and soft skills are necessary for successful employment. Muskegon County’s manufacturing sector has stabilized to pre-recession levels. Increased wages for entry level positions are occurring with many manufacturers due to skill shortages and demand. Multiple manufacturers are currently involved in or projecting facility remodels and/or expansions due to their growth and limited manufacturing facility inventory. Many of these manufacturing expansions also include forecasted employment growth.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY positions remain difficult to fill in our area due to multiple factors: lack of “big city” appeal; competition from work-at-home companies; and lack of necessary skills and experience. Individuals with System Application Product (SAP), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and/or Cisco Networking credentials are in demand.

AGRICULTURE positions in crop harvesting and food processing remain high, especially in Oceana County. Farms and food processors will be in high volume hiring during spring and summer. Agricultural employers face difficult challenges in securing a workforce due to loss of returning migrant workers, regulations and losing workers to increased manufacturing opportunities.

RETAIL/HOSPITALITY continues to show growth and has tremendous opportunity to strengthen the local economy through exceptional customer service skills. Implementing a customer service training for this industry is underway through a Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce collaborative effort, the Star Program. Focus will be on educating employees in this industry to provide outstanding customer service while promoting why Muskegon County is a great place to live, work and play.

OTHER: Continued construction of the downtown MATS Transit Center, Muskegon Community College (MCC) downtown facility, MCC construction of a new Science Center and a variety of manufacturing expansions or remodels will likely provide construction and skilled trades opportunities. Future expansion of Pigeon Hill Brewery and the announcement of Restoration Services of the Lakeshore locating in downtown Muskegon supports continued growth and employment opportunities in the area.
