9 Leadership Myths & How to Overcome Them

These nine myths can ham-string you, your company, and your employees. Here'show to get beyond them.Every age has its leadershipmyths. Thousands of yearsago, the ability to lead wasthought to be conferred by thegods. In the 1840s, Scottishwriter Thomas Carlyle createdhis “Great Man Theory,” whichheld that leaders have specialpowers and a special place insociety – and that the rest ofus have a special obligation todefer to them. Here are nine myths that lead-ers tell themselves today – andwhat they should be sayinginstead.1. Checking youremail during an importantconversation with a directreport does not do this.Leadership demands that yoube fully present, yet too manyleaders are distracted duringkey discussions, decisions,

and developments. How do youremain present while leading?3. I don’t have time to developmy leadership.Really? At what point will yoube less busy? What is the costif your leadership skills cannotstay slightly ahead of your com-pany?4. Leaders are born, notmade. I don’t think leadershipcan be learned. While not everyone is capableof being a leader, or willing tomake the required tradeoffs, leadership is an “observable,
