Stroud Doubles-Up Third Start-Up “Opening labels is not new to me,” says accomplished producer and record executive James Stroud. “When I was working years ago for Jimmy Bowen I took a year off, then opened Giant Records. Powers told Country Aircheck, “Having big hits and breaking acts is what it’s all about at mainstream Country radio. We also know it’s harder than ever to get those songs and new artists exposed in a timely fashion. BPP is a forward-thinking company that can be utilized as a stand-alone, first-class promotion team or as a strong back-up to an existing team that will help deliver a label’s priority records faster.” The newest promoter to join BPP is Chuck Swaney, most recently the Northeast rep for Universal South. He starts Friday, will work the NE and Midwest and can be reached at [email protected]. Already on the team are former Curb Southeast regional Rocco Cosco, who works the SE and can be reached at [email protected]. Former Capitol Southwest Regional Mara Sidweber handles that region and the West for BPP and is at [email protected]. Contact Powers at 615-297-6935 or [email protected] and Solima at [email protected]. Also new to BPP as Promotion Manager is Kim Trosdahl, who you can reach at [email protected].

ABC News Radio Nashville Producer Hunter Kelly ([email protected]) discusses his most important songs, albums or concerts:1. Garth Brooks, Birmingham, 1992: This show is the reason I’m in Nashville. The energy in that arena was unlike anything I’d experienced before, and I don’t think I’ve been that overwhelmed at a show since.2. Wynonna, Tell Me Why: I remember where I was when I first heard the single

“Tell Me Why” on the radio. This album opened so many musical doors for me -- California rock with the title cut, blues with “That Was Yesterday” and even alternative with “Father Sun.”3 Almost Famous: This movie turned me on to so much great classic rock and inspired me to write my first column for Belmont’s student paper and go for an internship at Billboard.4. Reba McEntire/I Know How He Feels: Of the 200 Reba songs on my iPod, this is the most-played. The regret captured in her vocal and the lyrics matched with the delicate piano and guitar production in the intro make this one a Reba masterpiece.5. Stevie Wonder, Atlanta, 2007: His vocals and the band were so flawless, I kept having to remind myself it was a live performance. Hearing Stevie perform “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and “Sir Duke” in a 6,000 seat venue was pure joy. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Tom Waits.• An “important” piece of music you’ve never heard: AC/DC Back in Black.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Miranda Lambert’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

CRS: Registration for CRS-40 will commence August 1at www.crb.org with the early-bird rate of $499 available until Dec. 15. CRS-40 will be held March 4-6 at the Nashville Convention Center.

It’s “Heaven” For Collins and Dodson You’d be in heaven, too – or at least the nearest Mercedes dealership – if, like songwriters Jim Collins and Marty Dodson, one of your songs was cut by both Kenny Chesney and George Strait. As we hear the story from a publishing pal, Strait had cut “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” for his new Troubadour CD. During a tour stop in Birmingham early this year, Strait played the song for Chesney, who just happened to be in town re-habbing his shoulder after surgery. Chesney reportedly fell in love with the tune and jumped at the chance to record it once Strait decided not to include it on his new CD. Chesney, of course, has since anointed “Heaven” as the first single from his upcoming CD. Now comes word that fans will also be able to get Strait’s version when iTunes releases a bundle of Strait’s “Troubadour” video along with George’s version of “Heaven” sometime in the next couple of weeks. Jim and Marty ought to go to Vegas.

Chart Note Kenny Chesney’s new single “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” was released to radio today, and observant recipients probably noted the Blue Chair/BNA label designation. A Sony BMG spokesperson confirms that Blue Chair is Chesney’s imprint and that the single and subsequent album Lucky Old Sun are property of Blue Chair. BNA licenses Chesney’s music through Blue Chair under this new arrangement. Blue Chair, however, has no staff and no artists on its roster other than Chesney. The licensing arrangement is for this album only and will not extend to future Chesney releases.

Artist News Faith Hill will again sing the opening theme “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night,” for NBC-TV’s Sunday Night Football, debuting Sept. 7 during the first regular season broadcast. James Otto’s title album track, “Sunset Man,” is featured on the Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 Soundtrack. tuBe CheCkout over. As soon as I heard ‘Tequila,’ I knew it would be the first single.” The label has also signed noted songwriter Anthony Smith, former Lonestar frontman Richie McDonald and new band Houston County. Smith and McDonald will both have singles out before the end of the year, with the band’s debut expected in Q1 ‘09. Radio promotion has been contracted with Bigger Picture Promotion and the division headed by Michael Powers and Jeff Solima (see next story). Bigger Picture Promotion will report directly to Bill Catino, who will be consulting Stroudavarious. “Bill is a longtime friend who has been a huge force in radio promotion for years,” Stroud says. “He was responsible for the radio promotion for George Strait, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Keith Urban and Sugarland, among many others.” In addition to Stroud, A&R staffers include Jimmy Metts, Tammy Luker and Doug Rich. Consultant Neal Spielberg will direct marketing and sales, with distribution handled by Sony RED. Stroud’s second label is Country Crossing, which has already signed John Anderson and Lorrie Morgan. The label is linked with the Country Crossing development near Dothan, AL, which is the brainchild of developer Ronnie Gilley. “It’s an Alabama version of Branson, although it will be a lot larger,” Stroud says. “The artists will have venues down there -- John Anderson will have his steakhouse, Lorrie will have her Hot Chicken. We’ll be doing a lot of cross promotion. Our intention is to do radio shows out of there. “Partnering with venues gives us the potential to expose artists and sell their merch and records directly,” Stroud says. “We didn’t even think about doing these kinds of things five years ago because we were selling so many records the traditional way. Well, we don’t now. We’re not selling all those records. So we have to find the QVCs and the Country Crossings and make sure we use our celebrities in a positive way and get the most out of what they’ve earned.” The QVC mention references his Stroudavarious Orchestra: Sounds Of The Season project (CAW 7/14). “Teri Brown, who reps QVC, came to us and said someone needs to make a great instrumental Christmas album,” he explains. “So I went to the

best of the best musicians in the world, and they’re right here in Tennessee. I got 24 of these great players to form a band and orchestra. We picked the biggest standards of Christmas and recorded instrumental versions. It’s being sold on QVC for six months for less than $10, which is a great stocking-stuffer. It’s a good example of what we can do as an independent label in a little bit different way and do well with it. “Independent labels are having success,” Stroud says. “Taylor Swift is one of the biggest artists in the format and you can look at several other success stories as well. It’s easier than it was five or six years ago to go to the market as an independent compared to a major. The structure of making, marketing and selling records is completely different now. An independent label that is forward thinking and markets outside of the normal channels will do very well.” And it doesn’t hurt that there’s always that common thread...an element Stroud has consistently seemed able to deliver: “The bottom line is a hit record is still a hit record,” he says. “You still have to have that.”
