Buried Memories | Thesis5th year - Mackintosh School of Architecture This Thesis explores the nature of suppressed memory within the context of the Spanish Civil War, narrating the sequence of events in the fight for democracy which led to the war, the years of conflict as a divided nation, and emphasising the physical and mental scars in the aftermath, thereby, confronting the atrocities the Franco period.
The design includes private spaces for individual contemplation and memorial, to much larger courtyard spaces which bring people together for a collective experience. The design is set within a hill on the Grand Facade of Madrid. The design process therefore focused on top lighting to get natural light into the depths of the building. The retaining walls are to be purposed as graves to provide a final place of rest for victims of the Spanish Civil War who are being discovered throughout Spain in unmarked graves.

The Spanish memorial garden is constructed with weathering steel voids and a concrete frame which supports local planting. The structure of the garden has been designed to visually represent roots going into the ground. The result is a memorial which becomes physically connected to the earth.

Glasgow Sensorium | Athenaeum 4th year - Mackintosh School of Architecture
The Sensorium is a multi-purpose arts institution, designed in the centre of the West End of Glasgow. The design of the brownfield site was to create a corner building with strong prominence and historical relevance to the site. Much of the wall of the site was retained to keep the strong threshold. The design revolved around top lighting and the use of concrete to create a variety of environments.

Humane Incarceration | Design3rd year - University of Nottingham
This project focused on the idea of a rehabilitate prison and ways to provide a degree of self sufficiency to a community of inmates and staff. The design places a library tower as the most significant point in the development. The project was based in Co. Donegal, Ireland, as part of an international design project in 3rd year.

Humane Incarceration:
My final year project looked at what it meant to build in a rural landscape. I chose to develop an island which had been occupied and cultivated up until 60 years ago, in County Donegal Ireland.
I developed a brief which sought to bring new life to the island as a rehabilitative prison, based on the Norwegian island prison, Bastoy. The island was chosen to provide a positive environment, where inmates could connect to nature, farm the land, and create a sense of community while a process of rehabilitation and education takes place.

Humane Incarceration:
My investigations led me to consider how space, and access to open space in particular, could affect to quality of reform for prisoners. Here, I compare the size vs capacity ratio of existing prisons when considering the capacity of Inish Meane island.

Humane Incarceration:
Seen here are excerpts from my final design; the architecture of the rehabilitative heart of the island manifested as a sculptural form within the dramatic landscape of rural Ireland.

Butterfly Pavilion | Design3rd year - University of Nottingham
Butterfly Pavilion | The Design aims were to develop a pavilion in the heart of Liverpool which captures the emotive qualities of Co. Donegal and draw attention to the cities Irish heritage. The design takes on the scale of an old Irish dwelling and develops a sculptural roof which expresses the windy nature of Donegal by channelling the direction of wind though the void.

The architecture was designed to face the same orientation as the original surveyed Irish dwelling and incorporates similar materials to represent the traditional materials. Stone gabions would be used for the wall and a thatch cladding would make up the cladding for the roof and wings.

Fleeting Retreat | Pavilion live design and build2nd year - University of Nottingham
Fleeting Retreat | The project was an initial competition to design a simple structure which could be placed in Ecobuild in London during the exhibitions. The success of the project led to it being erected multiple other times, including for the London Olympic touch relay in Nottingham. The design uses re-usable shipping pallets and can be constructed with a small team in a few hours.

The design has been highly successful, exhibiting at Ecobuild 2012, the Olympic Torch Relay and at the Nottingham Light Festival.

While working with Clague, I have been involved on an ongoing project for the design of new homes at the old Pfizer Pharmaceuticals site, near Sandwich, Kent. Developed closely with the Project Architect, I was able to demonstrate my skills in developing indicative unit types and creating a character for the project. (Pen on paper, Photoshop)
