INDUSTRY TRENDS IN POLYPROPYLENE: BP AMOCO'S COMPETITIVE POSITION IN THE INDUSTRY. AU Harris J E CS BP Amoco Polypropylene SO Polyolefins 2000. Conference proceedings Editor(s): SPE,South Texas Section; SPE,Thermoplastic Materials & Foams Div.; SPE,Polymer Modifiers & Additives Div. Houston, Tx., 27th Feb.-1st March 2000, p.175-87 AB Trends in the general PP industry are outlined, as seen by BP Amoco, together with an overview of how the company believes its process and catalyst technology show a unique fit into the current and future competitive environment. COMMERCIAL NYLON PLASTICS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS. AU Harris J E; Editor(s): Kohan M I CS Amoco Performance Products Inc. SO Nylon Plastics Handbook Munich, Carl Hanser Verlag, 1995, p.487-599. 43C3 AB Discussion of the factors that affect the melt behaviour and solid-state properties of nylons and how to characterise these factors are the sine qua non of nylon technology. Numerical illustrations and definition of trends are presented. The large number of compositions and modifications in the nylon plastics family yield special sets of characteristics and application opportunities that generalisations do not reveal. The manufacturers of commercial nylon plastics provide additional insight into the synthesis and behaviour of the resins they make, review their applications, and provide information on their special products. 171 refs.

Poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) block and chain-extended copolymers. 2. Preparation and characterization of chain-extended PAEK copolymers and poly(ether ketone ketone)/poly(ether ether ketone) block copolymers AU Harris, J. E.; Winslow, P. A.; Botkin, J. H.; Maresca, L. M.; Clendinning, R. A.; Cotter, R. J.; Matzner, M.; Kwiatkowski, G. T. CS Amoco Perform. Prod., Inc., Alpharetta, GA, 30202, USA SO Macromolecules (1993), 26(9), 2366-71 AB A series of chain-extended poly(aryl ether ketones) (PAEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone)/poly(ether ether ketone) (PEKK/PEEK) block copolymers were prepd. via the nucleophilic polycondensation and evaluated. The former were prepd. by reacting a bisphenol, such as hydroquinone, with a series of difunctional PAEK oligomers, while the latter were prepd. by reacting those same oligomers with a bisphenol, such as hydroquinone, and as activated dihalo compds., such as 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone. The chain-extended copolymers show good mech. and thermal properties which can be varied by varying the particular bisphenol used and/or the oligomer mol. wt. The PEKK/PEEK block copolymers also have overall attractive properties; an in-depth evaluation of one particular polymer showed properties comparable to those of com. poly(aryl ether ketones). Effects of the t-butyl substituent on the miscibility of polyarylates with polyamides AU Dean, B. D.; Harris, J. E. CS Amoco Perform. Prod., Inc., Alpharetta, GA, 30202, USA SO J. Appl. Polym. Sci. (1992), 46(4), 745-8 AB Amorphous polyarylates derived from 12-50 mol.% of a tert-butyl-substituted diacid, e.g., 5-tert-butylisophthalic acid, exhibit miscibility with the amorphous phase of polyamides having arom. and aliph. character. Equally crit. to blend miscibility is the aliph./arom. carbon atom ratio (exclusive of the amide functionality) of the polyamide. An aliph./arom. carbon atom ratio >1.4 but <2.5 is necessary. Blends of poly(aryl ether ketones) AU Harris, J. E.; Robeson, L. M. CS Amoco Perform. Prod., Inc., Bound Brook, NJ, USA SO Contemp. Top. Polym. Sci. (1989), 6(Multiphase Macromol. Syst.), 519-46 AB The properties of blends of arom. polyether-polyketones with polyether-polyimides, polyimides, and arom. polyesters were discussed.

Miscible blends of poly(aryl ether ketone)s and poly(ether imides) AU Harris, J. E.; Robeson, L. M. CS AMOCO Performance Prod., Inc., Bound Brook, NJ, USA SO J. Appl. Polym. Sci. (1988), 35(7), 1877-91 AB Crystn. kinetics and mech. properties of poly(aryl ether ketones) (PAEK)/poly(ether imide)(Ultem 1000, I) blends were studied as a function of blend compn. and m.p. of PAEK. The blends exhibited a max. in toughness at intermediate compns. along with an accompanying max. in PAEK crystallinity. The chem. resistance of I is significantly improved with the addn. of a PAEK. In org. chems., the improvement was expected when tensile stress was plotted vs. log time to rupture. However, in aq. bases, the resistance of the blends was much greater than anticipated. This property profile suggests that these blends are useful as thermoplastic composite matrix resins. Miscible blends of poly(aryl ether ketones) and poly(ether imides) AU Harris, J. E.; Robeson, L. M. CS AMOCO Perform. Prod., Inc., Bound Brook, NJ, USA SO Polym. Prepr. (Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Polym. Chem.) (1987), 28(1), 56-7 AB Blends of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone-hydroquinone copolymer [29658-26-2] and Ultem 1000 [61128-24-3] (polyetherimide) offered a unique balance of properties as exhibited by their miscibility and synergistic toughness. The glass temp. and chem. resistance of these blends were detd.

Isomorphic behavior of poly(aryl ether ketone) blends AU Harris, James E.; Robeson, Lloyd M. CS Spec. Polym. Compos. Div., Union Carbide Corp., Bound Brook, NJ, 08805, USA SO J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. (1987), 25(2), 311-23 AB Blends of various poly(aryl ether ketones) showed a range of miscibility and isomorphic behavior depending on mol. wt. Isomorphism was shown by only miscible blends. The dependence of the glass transition temp. vs. compn. exhibited a min. deviation from linearity whereas the melting temp. (Tm) vs. compn. exhibited a pronounced max. deviation from linear behavior. The cryst. Tm vs. compn. for isomorphic blend plots were considerably different than for random copolymers with isomorphic units. Homopolymers and random copolymers exhibited Tm that was a linear function of ketone content (increasing ketone content increased Tm). For blends, Tm was essentially the same as that of the higher-melting constituent until high levels of the low-melting constituent were present. The obsd. Tm vs. compn. behavior was interpreted using classical theory to calc. the components of the liq. and cryst. phase compns. As a miscible blend was cooled from the melt, essentially pure component of the highest Tm crystd. out of soln., as predicted by calcd. solid-liq. phase diagrams. This occurred until the crystn. was complete owing to spherulitic impingement. At high concns. of the low-melting constituent, low Tm values were obsd. because the highest-melting constituent was depleted before the crystn. was complete. In many miscible blends involving addn. of an amorphous polymer to a cryst. polymer, the degree of crystallinity of the cryst. polymer increased. The diln. by a miscible amorphous polymer allowed for a high level of crystallinity. POLYSULPHONE. AU Harris J E CS UNION CARBIDE CORP. SO Engineering Thermoplastics.Properties and Applications Editor(s): Margolis J M; Hudgin D E New York,Marcel Dekker Inc.,1985,p.177-200. 63E AB Details are given of the properties and uses of the polyaryl ether sulphone based on dichlorodiphenylsulphone and bisphenol A, known as Udel from Union Carbide. The synthesis, chemical structure and engineering properties are discussed in detail. Examples of how the properties of polysulphone relate to some applications are mentioned. 13 refs.

A comparison of miscible blend binary interaction parameters measured by different methods AU Harris, J. E.; Paul, D. R.; Barlow, J. W. CS Dep. Chem. Eng., Univ. Texas, Austin, TX, 78712, USA SO Adv. Chem. Ser. (1984), 206(Polym. Blends Compos. Multiphase Syst.), 43-58 AB Miscible blends of bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin copolymer (I) [25068-38-6] with aliph. polyesters were studied by m.p. depression anal. and sorption to obtain the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter (B). The B values obtained agreed well in sign, magnitude, and variation with ester repeat structure and the B values measured calorimetrically for mixts. of low-mol.-wt. compds. with structures which were analogous to those of the polymers. These comparisons suggested that the same mechanisms were responsible for the exothermic heat of mixing measured directly for the analogous compds. and indirectly for the miscible polymer blends. H bond formation between the OH group on I and the ester moiety was probably responsible for the exothermic interactions and polymer blend miscibility obsd. A comparison of miscible binary blend interaction parameters measured by different methods AU Harris, J. E.; Paul, D. R.; Barlow, J. W. CS Dep. Chem. Eng., Univ. Texas, Austin, TX, 78712, USA SO Polym. Eng. Sci. (1983), 23(12), 676-81 AB Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameters were detd. for blends of bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin copolymer [25068-38-6] and a series of aliph. polyesters using a m.p. depression method and a sorption technique, and the results agreed well with the values found calorimetrically for low-mol.-wt. model compds. The results support the idea that the interaction parameter results from a net formation of H-type bonds, and they reinforce the idea that polymer-polymer miscibility depends on the presence of exothermic enthalpic interactions.

COMPARISON OF MISCIBLE BINARY BLEND INTERACTION PARAMETERS MEASURED BY DIFFERENT METHODS. AU Harris J E; Paul D R; Barlow J W CS TEXAS,UNIVERSITY SO Plastics ABC's: Polymer Alloys,Blends & Composites;National Technical Conference Editor(s): SPE Bal Harbour,Fla.,October 25-27,1982,p.162-4. 627 AB A study of polymer-polymer interaction parameters obtained by (1) melting point depression analysis, (2) a newly developed sorption technique and (3) calorimetric measurements of analogue compounds is presented for miscible blends comprising polyhydroxy ether of bisphenol A, phenoxy and a variety of polyesters. The comparison demonstrated - that within experimental error all three methods gave consistent magnitudes for the interaction parameters. The consistency of the results suggested that the interaction parameter is a thermodynamic quantity related primarily to the excess heat of mixing. 14 refs. Miscible binary blends containing the polyhydroxy ether of bisphenol-A and various aliphatic polyesters AU Harris, J. E.; Goh, S. H.; Paul, D. R.; Barlow, J. W. CS Dep. Chem. Eng., Univ. Texas, Austin, TX, 78712, USA SO J. Appl. Polym. Sci. (1982), 27(3), 839-55 AB Blends of bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin copolymer (I) [25068-38-6] with poly(1,4-butylene adipate) [24936-97-8], poly(ethylene adipate) [24937-05-1], poly(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylene succinate) [28776-65-0], poly(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylene adipate) [28039-87-4], poly(1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol succinate) [60806-40-8], and poly .epsilon.-caprolactone [24980-41-4] exhibit the single, compn.-dependent glass transition temp. characteristic of miscible systems. I blends with poly(ethylene succinate), poly(hexamethylene succinate), or polypivalolactone are immiscible. Blend interaction parameters, obtained from anal. of the m.p. depressions obsd. for miscible blends contg. crystallizable polyester components, vary with polyester chem. structure so as to suggest an optimum d. of ester groups in the polyester chain for achieving max. interaction with I. Too many or too few ester groups lead to immiscible polyester-I blends. Factors affecting polymer-polymer miscibility: the relative importance of entropy and enthalpy AU Harris, James Elmer CS Univ.
