Resilience The teachers have been working hard this year to develop strong and positive relationships with students and to provide each and every learner with a caring and supportive learning environment. They have also engaged with their students in all matters related to resilience, with the aim to improve student resilience skills, their ability to recover from tough times or when things go wrong. The teachers have provided their students with the building blocks to deal with personal challenges, being able to cope with what life throws at you and to bounce back. To reinforce the importance of developing resilient children, I will be acknowledging students at each week’s Friday assembly with Principal Awards for individuals who demonstrate high levels of resilience and the ability to ‘care for themselves’.

What can parents and carers do to support resilience building? Establish a safe and supportive environment

• Set clear rules and boundaries requiring respect and cooperation • Teach social and emotional skills • Role-model strong social and emotional skills • Set strong expectations about effort, attitudes and behaviour • Encourage children to work hard at school • Create opportunities to help children learn to mix well with other children and adults • Encourage children to show respect and consideration for others • Give responsibilities so children learn how to help out and to contribute to others • Teach children important social skills and values • Give attention to positive behaviours in order to reward and reinforce them.

Tell Them From Me Survey, 2019 – Students in Years 4 to 6 I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11 March and 12 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 15th March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Bus Safety Bus drivers are seeing an increase in students ignoring repeated driver instruction to not cross in front of buses after alighting. This action is life threatening and falls within the "highly dangerous" behaviour and will result in suspension of the student/s. Please see below links to the current Bus Safety Awareness Brochure and interactive road safety education which outlines requirements for students and parents when boarding and alighting buses, along with road use and parental supervision. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/downloads/bus-safety-school-students.pdf  https://www.safetytown.com.au/ If your child catches a bus, please inform them of the importance of acting responsibly around buses and whilst using access areas to and from the bus stops. Bus drivers are requesting that parents attend the stop with their child and ensure they are waiting on the correct side of the road when picking students up.

Sport Congratulations go to Romany Janssens who this week was selected to represent Tongarra in girls’ soccer. We wish her all the best in her upcoming efforts at regional level. The boys’ cricket team will take on Gerringong Public School tomorrow at Athol Noble Oval, in the second round of the PSSA knockout. We wish the team well and know that they will be fine representatives of our awesome school.

Kiss and Drop The school is fortunate enough to have two kiss and drop zones. The first area is located outside of the school’s office. The second kiss and drop zone is located out the front of the church. Please adhere to the rules of a ‘no parking zone’ at all times. Parents have two minutes to drop off their children in the kiss and drop zones. The two zones are not for long term parking and parents risk a fine if they park for longer than two minutes in the kiss and drop zones. Chris Speirs Principal Jamberoo PS

Library News This week in the Library we launched the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The program provides an exciting opportunity for students to receive recognition for reading a variety of books. The rules for the PRC have been explained to the students and (delicious) incentives have been offered for classes where all students complete the challenge. Students in the K-1 classes will complete the challenge in class with their teacher, however all other students will read their quota of books in their own time. This time may include in class silent reading time, home reading as part of homework, reading time in the library or any other personal reading time. As evidence that they have read a book. Students (other than the K-1 classes) will record a short summary and add the book to their reading log on the PRC site. For more information please read the information attached to this newsletter or feel free to contact me at school. Also, another massive thank you to our parent helpers in the library! They have sorted the junior fiction, non-fiction and PRC sections of the library and are now working on the fiction section. We are so grateful for your time and effort!

Grandparents Day Coming up on Friday 22nd March, is one of the most exciting days of the year at Jamberoo Public School, Grandparents Day! Students and teachers alike absolutely love sharing their school day with grandparents and showcasing the wonderful work we do each day. This year our guests will be treated to a morning tea, classroom visits, a special assembly, a sausage sizzle lunch and the opportunity to donate a book in the library. Please see the invitation attached to this newsletter for all the details.

Premier's Reading Challenge Tips for parents and carers for participating in the Challenge

D Find out the name(s) of your school’s Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) coordinator(s) and how they

plan to administer the Challenge.

D Familiarise yourself with the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you can watch that demonstrates how login, search for books and add them to a Student Reading Record (SRR).

D Visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge Support website. It allows you to search for information about the PRC and how to use the PRC website and also how to contact the PRC team.

D Set reminders for Challenge opening and closing dates in your and your child’s calendar.

D Find out your child’s logon details. For public schools, students’ logon will be the same one they use to

access computers and the internet at school. Non-government students will need to contact the PRC

Coordinator at their school if they cannot remember their login details.

D Assist your child to borrow books from the school or local library. Listen to your child read and talk

about the story/ characters/ information. Read to or with your child if she/he is participating in the K-2

Challenge.

D Help your child to add books to her/his Student Reading Record regularly.

D Follow The Arts Unit on Facebook and the NSW PRC on Instagram to keep up to date about

information about the Challenge throughout the year. We regularly run contests and Author events

your child may be interested in taking part in.

D Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if:

Your child has any difficulty using her/his logon details to access the PRC website.

You are concerned that your child’s name is spelt incorrectly in the PRC website. If you need to check your child’s Challenge history, please contact your child’s PRC coordinator.

D Your child’s online Student Reading Record must have the required number of books recorded to

complete the Challenge by the student closing date. School PRC coordinators have an extra two

weeks to validate the SRR. Only students with a validated SRR are eligible for a certificate.

D In the final weeks of the Challenge, log on regularly to the website to check the status of your

child’s SRR. Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if you are concerned your child’s SRR has not been

validated.

Dragon boating this Saturday The big day has rolled around again, with the Shellharbour Festival of Sport held this Saturday. A reminder to our 20 enthusiastic paddlers, that our training session will be held at 4pm tomorrow (Friday) on the Berkley side of the Lake (near the Yacht Club). We will then meet at 8.30am on Saturday at the Oak Flats skip ramp, ready to paddle in the heats and hopefully qualify for the community final in the early afternoon. We would LOVE your support at this great family event, Jamberoo school community, so please do consider ducking across to watch for an hour or two … or settle in for the morning, to cheer the JPS boat across the line.
