Jairos Jiri Day Commemorations
Editor’s Note Welcome readers to our last quarter
edition of 2011 Jairos Jiri Association
newsletter. This issue of the newsletter
contains important stories on what you
might have wanted to know about us
but did not know how to ask. The Jairos
Jiri Association is not about titles and
offices, it is places and projects, but
most importantly, it is about people.
These are what we want to tell you
about.
This issue of our newsletter
concentrates primarily on affairs
concerning rehabilitation programmes
and projects of Jairos Jiri Association in
Zimbabwe. It is by no means a
comprehensive inventory of
developments at our entire centers and
projects. Rather it is a summary of
information received which focuses
either on projects or programmes
carried out by individual
establishments. Through the pages you
will get an opportunity to visit our
various centers, establishments and
programmes, to learn about different
events taking place around the country
as well as hear expressions and
experiences being directly related by
people with disabilities who are
currently involved in the work of our
organization. We trust that you will
recognize the spirit of Jairos Jiri and the
goals he set for us to achieve. This is
our newsletter, yours and mine, so
please write us so that we may share
your news, stories and opinions with the
rest of our friends. Your support and
interest will make this on-going project
a success. Happy reading!
W N Ruvere
NATIONAL EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
The late Mr. Jairos Jiri M.B.E, MA (HON) passed away on the 12th of November 1982. In
recognition of the great work and achievements of Mr. Jairos Jiri the 12th day of November has been
set aside for the commemorations. Known as the Jairos Jiri Day all the centers and units
commemorate the works of the Jairos Jiri Association. For the year 2011 commemorations were held
on the 11th of November. Information gathered revealed that the day progressed well and was graced
by people from all walks of life from both the public and private sectors. Information from units and
centers best summarized the celebrations as Christmas before Christmas day. The commemorations
were full of pomp and fun as participants went down memory lane appreciating the work of one of
Zimbabwe’s great sons. May the lord bless all who contributed in cash, kind and in spirit towards the
success of this day.
A brush, paint and a willing heart
It took only three days for Jairos Jiri Gweru Naran School for the Hearing impaired to appreciate that
when there is a Brush, paint and willing heart, even Mount Kilimanjaro can be painted. It all started as
a visit by twenty visitors from New Zealand and two from South Africa to restructure the general
appearance of dormitories at the centre. From the 28th to 30th of June 2011 in a business minded
approach though with dedication, commitment and willingness, the twenty two visitors went on a
“rampage” turning the old scruffy walls left right and centre. The “rampage” resulted in a state of the
art painted walls in all the dormitories. A total of 14 dormitories were repainted and at the end of the
exercise it was all smiles at the centre.

Jairos Jiri Association council elects New Board members
New JJA Strategic Plan For 2011 to 2015 Current international trends are
discouraging past views about persons
with disabilities which regarded
disabled persons as patients who needed
treatment and care and encouraging the
Social Model of disability approach.
This model focuses on eliminating
barriers created by society that limit a
person from enjoying their human
rights. This includes promoting positive
attitudes, changing the environment to
be accessible for all and providing
information in a way that everyone can
understand. For these reasons, JJA
through the perseverance and active
participation of a 29 member delegation
which consisted of the JJA President Dr
A Senderayi, the Vice President Ms M
Matamba, Board member Mr S T C
Goremucheche, the National Executive
Director Mr W N Ruvere, 14 National
Office staff and 12 JJA Centre
Managers developed the 2011-2015
Association strategic plan from the
26thto 29th of July 2011.The process was
led by a Consultant Mr F Tarwireyi.
Throughout the process the previous
strategic plan and organizational
documents were reviewed. This effort
ensured that programmes and
interventions are built on JJA capacities,
and aim to integrate efforts with
communities, stakeholders, the
Government and other humanitarian and
development actors dealing with
disability issues. At the end of the
strategic planning workshop., the Vice
President declared the workshop “a
historic event”, in her closing speech.
The 15th day of October 2011 was not only set aside for the Annual General Meeting but it was an
election day as sanctioned by the constitution of the Association. On this day the standing committee
stepped down and through secret ballot the National council members elected new National
Executive Council members. The New Board members are as follows:
President-Dr A M Senderayi, Vice President-Ms M Matamba, Hon Treasurer - Mr. P Rukodzi,
Secretary-Mr. E Misihairambwi
The following Board members were also elected:
Mr. S T C Goremucheche, Col C W Makova, Advocate H Makusha Moyo, Mr. J Mumbure, Mr. P
M Dehwa, Mr. P Jumbe, Mrs. L Murau.
In his opening remarks as the elected JJA President, Dr Senderayi named the new team,
“the winning team”.
2011 ZITF
Jairos Jiri Association did it again at the 2011 ZITF after coming third in competition 5 out of
approximately 30 other competitors, for Best Craft Demonstrators and bringing home a bronze
medal. The participants who included, Kadoma Centre’s Marimba Band (the crowd pullers) show
casing their stylish dance and lyric talents. Bulawayo Centre demonstrated their excellence in
weaving and leather crafts such that all the 35 sandals they had for displays were sold out two days
after ZITF business days. The mesmerizing landscaping designs and roses brightened the JJA stand,
so much that the crowd had to be controlled to allow each one to get a fair chance of viewing the
roses and the landscape designs. Zimunya and Luveve factories’ home furniture had their fair share
of customers who were interested in building their homes. The Bulawayo craft shop complimented
the home furniture from the factories with traditional designs of home cutlery and displays.

Kadoma School Marimba vibes
JJA Harare centre goes an extra mile
The core business of the JJA Harare
centre is provision of rehabilitation and
primary school education. Besides the
wonderful work in education circles, a
visit to the centre one cannot help but
appreciate the hive of activities on the
western side of the entrance. There
stands a green house which grows some
of the best tomatoes on the market. The
tomatoes are just but a marvel to watch
and are so appealing that one is
attempted to purchase them at first
glance. The centre has been running this
project so successfully that it is
immensely contributing to their total
income. The centre also has a
flourishing vegetable garden and this
has made the kitchen requirements well
catered for when it comes to provision
of vegetables
43rd Annual General Meeting
The 15th of October 2011 is a day
recorded in the history of Jairos Jiri
Association as a day when all roads led
to JJA Kadoma School for the 43rd
Annual General meeting. Among the
members present was Mr. Munyanyi,
the Mbada Diamonds Executive officer
who was the invited guest of owner.
Also present were National Executive
Council members.
First it was at the Zimbabwe
International Trade Fair ZITF
Exhibitions and people from all
walks of life loved the music as
the children with visually
impairment did what they know
best by producing a cool vibe
rhythm from the marimba
instruments. The music is
supported by a beautiful dance and
the children are a pleasure to
watch as they play the music. The
same beauty was evidenced as
entertainment of the day at the
Jairos Jiri Association AGM and
the Guest of Honour for the event,
Mbada Diamond Executive could
not help but appreciate the beauty
of the music.

Mutoko CBR program hits record high attendances
Differently abled indeed
In 1974, the Chauke family in
Chikombedzi, Chiredzi district, was
blessed with a baby boy who they
named Stephen. Four years later,
Stephen totally lost his sight after he fell
sick. He then did not receive any formal
education but he started playing the key
board at his church at a very tender age
of seven. His interest grew also in
repairing musical instruments despite
his disability. In his teenage years he
started repairing televisions and radios
for his local community. It is also
amazing that he dug an 18metre well at
his homestead. He later married and
now has five children together.
Through the Chikombedzi CBR and
Advocacy committee, Stephen received
a loan in 2007 courtesy of the Jairos Jiri
Association CBR programme loan
revolving fund intervention. He used the
funds to boost his electrical repairs
business and purchased the necessary
parts required in the electrical repairs
industry. Stephen is one of the
recognized and envied business people
of Chikombedzi. The life and abilities
of Stephen Chauke reflect the true
meaning of the caption of …disability is
not inability… because Stephen’s
blindness has not caused him to be
unable to carry out electrical repairs.
If ever there was a belief that 3 digit percentages are associated with inflation then alas, the tables
have changed. There was a 300% attendance to the disability management workshop comprising of
One Councilor, 14 kraal heads, One Headmaster, One Health officer, Two Teachers, 7 Pastors, and
several committee members including the JJA Advocacy committee members, on the 22nd of
September 2011. In Chiutsi ward, Mutoko. participants were highly active, led by kraal heads and
people with disabilities were enthusiastic. Geared up for the occasion was the councilor together with
other community leaders and committee members who made sure all was in place for the workshop to
progress well. With a participation of 90 individuals out of an expectation of 30 participants the
workshop was one of the most attended community workshop in the history of the Association. The
ward Councilor reiterated that the participants may have been more only that the other section of the
community had attended an agriculture related meeting at a nearby school. It goes without mention
that the Mutoko community is highly appreciative and active when it comes to community
development programs. Thanks to the community the program is going on smoothly.
From Pre-school to Primary school The trend in the current Zimbabwe education system is such that it is now a prerequisite for all
children to go through Grade zero before enrolling for Grade one so that children are equipped with
the basic reading and writing needed for primary schools. As if this had been prophesized, Jairos Jiri
Association developed a state of the art pre-school in the Waterfalls area of Harare. This inclusive
institution which is equipped by experienced pre-school teachers with vast early childhood
development skills, expertise and experience. The pre-school also houses a children’s play centre
which is equipped with various toys. Besides the teaching staff the school is privileged to have a
Physiotherapy department where the staffs conduct therapeutic exercises for children with physical
impairments. Coupled with a highly active manager and a team spirited workforce the centre has been
able to establish self sustaining income generating projects which include poultry, vegetable
production, grinding mill, and a fully stocked tuck-shop. Through the centre’s fundraising committee
initiatives a successful sponsored walk was undertaken to raise funds. 43 children graduated to grade
one for the year ending 2011.

A day commemorating the
rights of people with
disabilities
Above: Headman Chilonga, the Honorable Senator, Resident minister
and Governor and The Member of the
Central Committee Mr. Ben Baloyi
J JA facilitated the establishment of
Disability committees in each of the
Community Based Rehabilitation
(CBR) Advocacy operational wards.
The committees are comprised of
PWDs and representatives from the
different sectors in the community such
as the health, education, churches, and
traditional healers. Following the
training of ward 6 and 7 committees of
Chiredzi district on the roles and
responsibility of the community and the
rights of PWDs in the community
initiated an annual day to celebrate the
rights of PWDs. The day has been held
annually since 2009 and it is organised
and fundraised for by the community,
the JJA and other stakeholders.The
2011 annual day for the rights of PWDs
in Chiredzi was held on July 22, 2011
with dramas and poems by school
children depicting various messages on
disability, such as Children with
disabilities should not be hidden in their
homes. The event was exceptional as
the occasion was graced by the presence
of the Honorable Senator, Resident
minister and Governor Cde. Maleluke
and the Member of the Central
Committee Mr Baloyi. The day is a
perfect opportunity to raise awareness
on disability and present the disability
agenda to stakeholders in the
community including decision makers
BVTC pass rate on the rise
The centre recorded a remarkable improvement on their 2011 examination results; an 11% improved
pass rate in 2011 is no small feat for Bulawayo Centre. They are leaving no stone unturned in their
quest to further improve the training standards and continue to churn out graduates who are self
empowered to transform their lives and contribute immensely to the economic development of the
nation. The training provided at the centre focuses on helping youths to develop a broad range of skills
enabling them to become entrepreneurs or obtain employment. The skills training takes center stage,
and a combination of theory and practical in the workshops or in the fields is fundamental. Periods of
attachment in companies, farms or institutions are a valuable part of the program, where the reality of
working life blends with what the students have learnt at the school. After completion, the students
enter into their productive lives, and still can be assisted by the Association in the start up phase
through the Income Generating Projects (IGP) under the Community Based Rehabilitation project. The
IGP intervention endeavored to intensify the empowerment program for people with disabilities which
also focus on their rights to promote dignity, acceptance, full integration and participation in all
community development programmes.

Curtain Closes Down on 2011
On the 16th of December 2011 all
Jairos Jiri Units in Zimbabwe closed
their doors for the annual shut down.
This was the day which was marked for
all JJA employees to go and rest, be
with their families and loved ones as
well as enjoy the festive season. Like all
other years the day is normally marked
with an end of year party and this
marked the final bye to the year 2011.
The hopes lined up for 2012 are so high
given the economic improvements that
have been observed from economic
strides and events that unfolded in the
year 2011.
Jairos Jiri Burnside farm once the pride of the Jairos Jiri Association’s ventures has been currently in a
state of slumber owing to non availability of adequate resources ranging from water shortages to the
lack of farm implements. Currently the farm’s tractor is grounded, the farm has an ox drawn plough but
does not have oxen, and the farm has 5 boreholes and a tank but there is no electric pump so no water is
being pumped. The tank is already cracking owing to non use. However it is of interest to note that the
farm has entered into a resuscitation program which has seen the once dry and unattractive flower
nursery bed being turned into a green Harvey. The nursery currently has 1200 plants of which about
75% are roses. The greatest challenge is of marketing the flowers. On the other hand the farm is also
running a piggery project
