11 FLATTING" OF NYLON CORD TYRES

Nylon tyres which are fitted as stanaard equipment to all current production models, have a tendency for the tread to develop a temporary flat at the point of ground contact when the car is left standing for some time, or after a short period of standing following a long run during which high temperat ures have been reached.

These flats can be run out quite quickly but it may be necessary to approach the speeds and temperatures which have led to the "flatting" . For example, flats on tyres which have developed during thjs short stanoing period af£er ~ long fast run will be difficult to r emove if the car is then used for local motoring e specially if the weather has become colder and wetter.

For this reason it i s advisable, when about to balance the wheels, to run the car for a reasonable distance and then immediately remove and balance the wheels; A false impression of the state of balance will be obtained if a flat still exists on the tyre.

Many cases have come to our notice where wheels have been changed for suspected "out of truth" when .i.n fact the actual cause has been a flat on the tyre.

TYRE REPLACEMENT AND WHEEL INTERCHAI\GING

(All Current Production Models)

The following instructions for tyre replacement and wheel interchanging supersedes those given in the Handbooks and Service Manuals for all current production models.

The instructions to change over the road wheels every 2,500 miles (41 000 km) in the Service Vouchers can now be disregarded.

When replacement of the rear tyres becomes necessary, fit new tyres to the existing rear wheels and, after balancing, fit these wheels to the front wheel positions on the car, fitting the existing front wheel and tyre assemblies (which should have useful tread life left) to the rear wheel positions on the car.

If at the time this operat ion is carried out the tyre of the spare wheel is in new condition, it can be fitted to one of the front wheel positions in preference to replacing one of the original rear tyres1 which wheel and tyre then become the spare.

Note: Due to the change in the steering characteristics which can be introduced by fitting to the front wheel positions wheels and tyres which have been used on the rear wheel positions, interchanging of part worn tyres from rear to front wheel positions is not recommended.

RETURNING WHEELS UNDER GUARANTEE FOR "RUN-QUTu.

(Cars fitted with disc wheels)

Cases have been experienced of disc wheels being returned under guarantee due to alleged excessive "run-out".

On the return of the wheels to Messrs. Dunlop Ltd., they have been found to be up to specification in every respect.

From our experience of this complaint it is apparent that distributors and dealers are replacing road wheels on the strength o f visual appearance or measurements taken from incorrect points.

It is not- possible to e s t abl ish the degree of run-out without first removing the tyre . The maximwn permissible limit for both lateral 11 run-out'1 and 11 lift11 ( c irctunferential run-out) is 1/16" (1.6 mm) clock gauge reading. These measurements must only be taken from the vertical and horizont al f aces of the tyre bead seat respectively (A and Bon illustration).

Measurement of run-out must not be taken at the outer lip of the wheel rim or from any other points than those stated above.

No claims will be accepted against wheels returned under guarantee which are subsequently found to be within the manufacturers tolerances.

CHARACTERISTICS OF 1liE DUNLOP SP TYRE.

( 1E' Type and Mark 2 Models).

Dunlop SP tyres are now available for the 'E' Type and Mark 2 models, but are not yet available in the size required for the Mark 10 model.

The purpose of this bulletin is to ensure that distributors and dealers are made aware of the characteristics of these tyres so that they may advise customers who may consider the fitment of Dunlop SP tyres either as replacements or in certain cases conside r specifying them when a new car is ordered.

'E' Type Models ~f

Customers considering the f i trnent of SP ~yres to 'E' Type models should be advised that the characteristics of this tyre introduce the following conditions relative to the normal Dunlop RSS tyre equipment:-

a. The ride quality is harder.

b. The steering, although heavier, shows greater sensitivity but would be acceptable to a certain type of driver.

c. More road noise is transmitted into the car, which would probably not be acceptable to the more fastidious owner.

d. Tyre mileage is increased over that obtained with the standard tyre equipment.

c. $traight running at high speeds is very good and the grip on wet roads is good.

f. Dunlop SP tyres should only be recommended for use by those customers who use the maximum performance of the car or drive at continuous high speed under motorway conditions.

/cont'd ••••••••

Page 11: JAGUAR SERVICE BULLETIN - terrysjag.com L Wheels Service.pdf · Jaguar Cars Limited 2005 Service BWJ.etin K.1 continued XK.14Q AND .IK..1 50 Dl.1NWP ROAD SPEED 'l'YRES Normal dri

Jaguar Cars Limited 2005

NOTE: If Dunlop SP tyres are f i tted as replacements, they must be fitted to all four road wheels and not fitted individually to front only or r ear only.

Mark 2 Models .

You should strongly recommend the average customer or owner of a Mark 2 model car to retain the standard Dunlop RSS tyre equipment as being the most suitable tyre for general use, both from the point of view of silence, ride and steering characteristics.

Dunlop SP tyres are suitable for use on the Mark 2 model wher e the owner consistently uses the maximum performance of the car or consistently drives ~t high speeds under motonvay conditions.

CUstomers interested in the f i tment of SP tyres to a Mark 2 model should, however, be made aware of the fact that with these tyres the characteristics of the car will be changed by:-

a . Heavier steering effort required.

b. Deterioration in ride qual i t y in the lower speed range .

NOTE: If Dunlop SP tyres are fitted as replacements, they must be fitted to all four road wheels and not fitted individually to front onl y or r ear only.

!yre Pressures

The tyres referred to in the foregoing paragraphs requi re t he use of pressures different from those r ecommended with the standard tyre equipment and to obtain satisfactory r esults it is most important that the following tyre pressure r ecommendations are followed:-

The importance of having tyres that are in good condition and of the correct type cannot be over-stressed. The Dunlop RS.S Road Speed ( or Dunlop SP) tyres fitted as original e quipment are s pecially produced t o suit the performance of the model concerned and a change of make or type of tyre should not be made unless an assurance is given by t he tyre manufacturer concerned that the alternative type is suitable for the parU.cular car under maximum performance condi t.ions.

Jaguar Cars Limited 2005

It is also particularly important that tyres of different makes, t ypes , or those having different tread patt erns should not be mixed on individual cars as t his may adversely affect the handling and steering characteristics.

A car should not, of course , be driven on bald tyres or on tyres which have only part of the tread left showing. Driving with badly worn tyres on wet roads also greatly increases the risk of "aquaplaning", with consequent loss of steering and braking.

RADIAL PLY ( SP. 41 ) CAR 1'YRES - SERVICE PROCEDURE.

The following notes ar e provided in order to help Service personnel to deal with problems which may occasionally arise.

The features of r adial ply tyres are explained in Dunlop literature but it is not always r ealised that they can introduce a different kind of "feel" to car driving. We must therefore be careful to establish when a motorist reports adversely on his car behaviour that we are dealing with a condition which ought not to be there and not with something which must be accepted as inherent in radial pl y tyre operation. For instance, while SP tyres offer conside rable advantage in road roar suppression and ride comfort at open road speeds some increase in harshness is inevitable at town speeds as is some increase in steeri ng effort at parking speeds.

1. Lurch.

This is a rollin~ kind of progress where the front or back or both ends of the car appear to lurch from side to side, scmetimes accompanied by a slight up and down movement. These low frequency lateral and vertical oscillations may occur at speeds between 10 m.p.h and 30 m.p.h (16 k.p.h and 48 k.p.h.)

To some extent it is i nherent in the very flexible casing construction of radial ply tyres . More severe cases may be associated with poor suspension damping, possibly due to we akened or faulty shock absorbers, or with severe lateral or radial run-out of the tyre/wheel assemblies. The assemblies should be checked for truth as explained in Section 6, starting with the end of the car which appears to be most affected.

2. Heavy Steering at Low Speeds.

This condition, particularly at parking speeds, must be accepted by the user. If it appears to be abnormal points for checking are tyre pressures, castor angles and excessive friction i n king pin bearings, ball joint and steering box.

3. Surge.

This is a fore and aft hesitancy causing uneven progress. It is related to engine speed and, if present, will occur at tmrn

/cont'd ••.•••••

Page 20: JAGUAR SERVICE BULLETIN - terrysjag.com L Wheels Service.pdf · Jaguar Cars Limited 2005 Service BWJ.etin K.1 continued XK.14Q AND .IK..1 50 Dl.1NWP ROAD SPEED 'l'YRES Normal dri

Jaguar Cars Limited 2005

speeds mainly in the intermediate gears although i t may be present in top gear on some cars.

Here again it is partly inherent in r adial ply construction because the lower torsional rigidity of the casing permits some degree of wind-up between the tread and t he rim. If the condition is not aggravated by other factors it can i n some circumstances be an advantage in providing a more gradual getaway on very slippery surfaces such as ice.

Surge may be more noticeable as t he r e sult of a torque dis turbing factor such as misfiring, unsuitable carburation, momentary fuel starvation or excessive flexibil ity in the engine mountings. Simila rly it may be aggravated by excessive run-out of the driving tyre/wheel assemblies but in this case other forms of vibration would al so be present.

4. Steering Niggle.

This normally refers to a marked torsional oscillation of the steering wheel at speeds up to 50 m.p.h (80 k .p.h.) something similar to that caused by excessive dynamic unbalance .

The f i r st line of attack is to rebalance statically and dynamically and then if necessary to follow the full procedure i n Section 6.

Ni ggl e can be made worse by mechanical f eatures of which the most obvious ar e excessive play in steering bearings and bal l joints and loose steer i ng box and bracket connections to the frame .

s. Pull.

This is a gr eater t han usual tendency for the car to steer to one s ide, when the steering wheel is released. A marked steering e ffort is required to hold the car on a straight course.

First check camber, castor and king pin inclination angles and make sure that they are correct and equal on bot h sides of the car. Equal camber angles are very important and they should not differ between the two sides of the car by more than ~0 •

If steering angles are suspect.ed to be t he cause of the pull two cross ply tyres s hould be fitted to the front \vheels for test only. If the pull persists on cross ply tyrP.s the cause is mechanical.

If the steering angles are correct and the excessive pull does not occur on cross ply tyres refit each SP tyre in turn to the near front wheel with cross ply of t he off front whee l and retest on a fl at road. If one SP t y re is the offender i t may have to be r eplaced but if bot h are similarly affected i t s hould be possible to cancel this by revers ing one tyre on its r i m.

It will be clear that pull to the near s ide will be

increased by road camber and pull to the off side reduced or cancelled by it. This can often be used to make an unacceptable condition acceptable, by r eversing or interchanging tyres without the need to replace.

6. High Speed Vibrations.

These are vibrat ions which occur throughout the car at speeds around 80 m.p.h (130 k.p.h.) They are s i milar to vibrations caused by out of bal ance cross ply tyre/wheel assemblies.

The vibrations may result from out of balance in the propeller shaft or play in its joints. Out of balance brake drums, untrue wheels, f a tigued engine mountings and general engine vibration may also be factors other then t he tyres themselves.

First check all tyre/wheel assemblies for static and dynamic balance and correct if neces sary . At the same time check f or lat eral and radial run-out and concentrici ty of the tyr e fitting l i ne. An assembly run-out which exceeds 0.060" (1 .5 nm) on the tread may be suspect.

Should the r un- out exceed 0.06~' ( 1 .5 mm) strip tyre from wheel, check wheel separately at both bead seats for wobble and l iftp and refit t~re to give minimwn run-out (by rotating tyre relative to wheel in 90 steps). At this stage r oad test and if the vibrations are still unacceptable check spare as above. If suitable use to r eplace worst wheel which should be retained as a spare only.

If the measurements of the suspect wheel are within S.M.M. & T., tolerances little can be said to the user even though the wheel may be preventing the achievement of a low assembly run-out. It will be up to the user whether he wishes to buy another wheel from the car agent.

If the wheel exceeds S.M.M. & T., toler ance the user may wish to negotiate with his car agent on the basis of whether the car is sufficiently new to justify a claim or whether the wheel is out of truth from wear and tear.

If the wheel is well wi thin tolerance and an assembly run-out of or below 0.060" (1.5 nm) cannot be achieved the tyre may be exchanged at an appropriate allowance.

WIRE SPOKED ROAD WHEELS

Chromium plated wire spoked road wheels are protected by a clear lacquer which, under normal circumstances, should NEVER by removed. Should removal become necessary, however, the best results can be obtained by using British Domolac Llo-42 Cellulose Thiru~rs .

UNDER 00 CIRCUP.flT~F.S SHOULD A WIRE SPOKED ROAD \\HEEL BE REPLACED ON THE CAR IN AN UNLACQUERED CONDITION.

To re-lacquer, the wheels should be treat ed with "NECOL", which i s an I .C.I. clear cellul ose air-drying wheel lacquer. This will obviate r ust stains originating at the unpro tected t hreaded portion of spokes, etc.
