Highly motivated fourth year industrial design student, with experience in design thinking, research, and various prototyping techniques. I am looking for an opportunity to apply my diverse skill-set and knowledge of the design process in a professional setting through an internship this summer.

Non-Adherence What are the factors at the root of non-adherence, and how can they be empathized with and designed for?
Research
“I forgot, I cant afford it, I didn’t know it was important” are all common excuses.
“Helen didn’t want to leave her home of 51 years”
“Helen didn’t understand her doctor’s instructions”
“I call her every day to remind her to take her medication”
“Adherence is a phenomenally common problem”
“Lifestyle is harder to change than a medication regiment”
“No matter what you tell people, they will do what they want”
“Lots of patients self medicate. They think they know best”
Private practice doctor in upstate NY . He hears patient’s excuses every day for why they didn’t take their medicine.
Works at Upstate Medical in Syracuse, NY. Cares for patients every day who don’t listen to his instruction in and out of the hospital.
What is Non-Adherence
Anna and Albert: CaregiversChris: OR NurseMarc: DoctorAlbert’s mother lost the ability to care for herself, so he had to convince her to move into a retirement community.
Baby boomers represent the biggest risk to insurance companies due to non-adherence, which causes easily treatable ailments to balloon into expensive hospital visits. Non-adherence includes elements such as diet, exercise, and medical regiments, which dictate a person’s health. The result of non-adherence is a decrease in health and an increase in healthcare costs.

Expert and Caregiver InterviewsConducting interviews with medical profetionals and caregivers helped us understand and narrow our research of non adherence.
“I don’t want to be
a burden on my family”
“People look at you funny, and don’t want to talk to you”
James hold his family above all else, calling his daughter every night at 7. This is an important event in his daily routine, which he never misses. It connects him with his family and motivates him.
Usefulness Connection to Family Social InteractionJames is a janitor at a Sunday School near his home. This involves him in the community, gets him out of his house, and gives him a sense of purpose.
James’ cousin owns Vic Veina Pharmacy where James picks up his medication. James looks forward to going each month because it lets him spend time with his family.
James is an 81 year old from Olean, NY. He lives alone since his wife passed 14 years ago. He is also a type-2 diabetic. My team shadowed him at his home for a day to gain perspective into his lifestyle and unlock its totems.
Totems are elements or rituals in a person’s routine. We hoped to discover the motivation behind James’ totems, so it could be applied to the things he fails to do such as testing his blood sugar regularly.

Examining Key Elements
Our research is compiled and presented in this box. With it, anyone can familiarize themselves with the issue of non-adherence, its contributing factors, and be equipped to design for it.
Each research phase is shown through a book and an empathy activity. The book outlines a set of insights gathered through research, and the empathy activity helps convey those insights.

2. Do you follow the rules?
5. Ideation
3. Have a Conversation
Book: Outlines the insights gathered from our interviews.Empathy activity: A time line of your day to fill out, establishing your routine.
Book: Introduction to non-adherence. Empathy activity: The memory game is meant to establish empathy for elders with impaired memory.
Book: Looks at analogous models of adherence such as credit cards and driving for insight.Empathy activity: A checklist of daily activities that require adherence.
This stage is focused on idea generation and examining possible solutions.Empathy activity: Mind mapping and ideation
Book: Links people to the issue and introduces our interviews.Empathy activity: Encourages having conversations to understand the problem first hand.

Sand is packed over the match plate, then lifted away to create the mold cavity.
Aluminum is melted and poured into the sand molds.
Flashing is trimmed away and recycled.

The cast piece is refined on a hand mill.
The piece is polished with a wire brush.
All parts are assembled.
The Hip-Clip is ready for use.

The final design was modeled in Rhino.
The sand molds are broken open to release the cast parts.
The model is then 3D printed.
Duplicates of the 3D print are cast in plastic resin.
The duplicates, are attached to the match plate, then shellacked.

How can the London Design Museum be repurposed to provide accessible fresh produce to Shad Thames residents?
Shad Thames Area
In the heart of Shad Thames is the Design Museum, which will be vacated this year. Our solution had to incorporate this space.
Indicate food stores. Most are “mini mart” such as “Testco Express” or “Saintsbarry Local”.
What’s Around Shad ThamesAs of this year the London Design museum will be vacated. We wanted to create a meaningful and useful space for the Shad Thames community to meet and grow.
