Debbie Miller, Principal May 2017
Marlana Mathis, Assistant Principal
Dear Parents,
The countdown seems to be on, and we will continue to stay focused on learning
in these last few weeks. During this time, it will be especially important to check your
email, PTA blasts, and the newsletter for upcoming events, dates and times!
Congratulations are in line for several of our Jacksonville teachers and staff. First
congratulations to Mrs. Renee O’Connell, fifth grade teacher, for being recognized by
Baltimore County Schools as Jacksonville’s Teacher of the Year. Also, Mrs. Gabe Ross,
was named as a finalist for the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce Excellence in
Education Awards. Congratulations to all!
The Site Based Committee serves as a governance committee for the school. It is
comprised of 5 teachers, 5 parents, and 2 PTA Executive Board members, and 2
Administrators. Budgets and activities involving parents (Back to School Night and
American Education Week) are some of the items discussed monthly. The term for
parents is two years. Meetings are held once per month on Tuesdays at 4:15. There are
currently 2 openings for parent committee members. If you are interested, please submit
your name and reason why you would like to be a member to [email protected] by
Friday, May 19th. The final decision will be made by the current PTA Executive Board.
An enormous THANK YOU is extended to the PTA and parents for such a
fantastic Teacher Appreciation Week! We felt so spoiled with the delicious food, treats,
and gift throughout the week. It was wonderful to be recognized for the work we do
daily!
The PTA Blood Drive was very successful this past month. What an amazing,
giving community we have here. I am certain that some very needy patients will receive
our JES blood. Thank you for making the time to give so generously the gift of life to
others.
Baltimore County has decided the last days of school this year, and our calendar
has been adjusted. The last two days will be June 12 and 13. They are half days for our
JES students.
Make sure you put the following dates on your calendar for the 2017-2018 school
year.
August 28th: Kindergarten Picnic
August 29th: New Parent Night
August 31st: 2:00-3:00 Take a Peek at your Seat
August 31st: 6:00 Back to School Night
Finally, please remember that in another week on May 19, we will host our annual
carnival. Thank you so much for the donations you’ve already made. Please consider
giving an hour to volunteer to make this year the best ever! I can’t wait to see all of you
and enjoy the evening. Please come and support this event. The funds will go directly
towards your child and others!

News from the Nurse: Greetings! As we wind down the school year, please look for letters coming home if your child takes medication at school. Medicine must be picked up before the end of the year, and children may not take medication home. Seasonal allergies seem to be intense this year, perhaps from the warm winter? If your child has seasonal allergies, you may want to talk to your pediatrician about treatment options. Students with allergies are encouraged to shower nightly, take allergy medicine as ordered, and wash their face and hands upon coming in from recess/outdoor activities. School Nurse in Search of: A student or parent with a decent drone! I would like to take aerial pictures of some play areas for a project next year, but need the help of a techie, or someone with a drone hobby. Please call me at 410-683-8351, or e-mail me at [email protected] if you could spare less than an hour photographing the playgrounds with your drone and me. Thanks!

Water Safety Month Swimming is a lifelong skill and a fantastic family activity. Let’s work together to keep our children safe!
The Importance of Water Safety
1. Drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional injury death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. Drowning is the
#5 cause of unintentional injury overall. Children on the Autism Spectrum are drawn to water. Drowning
accounts for 90% of total U.S deaths reported in children with autism.
2. Every year more than 1,000 children 14 years and younger drown in pools and spas. Thousands more are
hospitalized.
3. Drowning is fast and silent. Drowning can happen in the time it takes to text a friend.
4. It only takes an inch of water for children to drown. It is not just pools, lakes, and oceans. It is also bathtubs and
buckets.
5. Fatal and non-fatal drownings are 8 times more likely to happen to children who do not know how to swim.
6. Knowing how to swim does not make a child drown – proof. Children still need adequate supervision.
Water safety is a year round topic. May is designated a special Water Safety month as we get ready for
a fun summer with more exposure to water. Drowning is a serious topic and not a very pleasant topic
to think about …but we must. Drowning is preventable. Talk to your children about the importance of
safety around water.
Never leave your children unattended around water. We know it sounds strict and harsh, but
there is no room for compromise. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water.
Please put your cell phone away, forget about the other things you need to do, and give your
children 100% of your attention when they are near or around water.
If your child is invited to a swim party…ASK about the lifeguards and parental involvement.
Safety Tips
1. Learn to Swim
2. Look Before You Leap
3. Never Swim Alone
4. Safety on the Pool Deck and around Open Water
5. On boats and around lakes, rivers and oceans, always use a certified life preserver
6. Have an emergency action plan
Check out the book Josh the Bay Otter - it is a cute story promoting water safety for children!
