Jackson County 4-H Newsletter December 2016 –January 2017

Dear 4-H Families and Friends: Happy holidays! I wish each and every one of you a fantastic time with loved ones and friends during this holiday season! At times like this, I am reminded of the many “gifts” we have all been given in our lives. I think 4-H is truly one of those gifts. 4-H, through its non-formal educational opportunities helps young people gain skills and grow into healthy productive citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

This truly is a gift that I wish all young people had. It speaks to why 4-H programs are truly open to any youth. We all have to help provide this openness to our programs. UW-Extension provides equal opportunities to all persons, regardless of race, color, sex, creed, disability, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status as well as socioeconomic backgrounds.

As 4-H club leaders, parents and volunteers, we need to work to assure that our meetings are accessible and open to anyone. Things to think about as a club include:

Does the date and time of our club meeting prohibit others from participating?

Is the location of our meeting accessible to everyone?

Would the location of our meetings make anyone feel uncomfortable?

How do we “invite” and “welcome” new members and families into our club?

How can we create an environment where others feel part of the group?

Tell us how you Tap Into Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development! If you agree that Wisconsin 4-H is a gift, please share your story at https://uwcx.org!

Across Wisconsin, 4-H members and volunteers use Wisconsin 4-H to strengthen important life skills, build strong community connections and support successful futures. Tell us about the positive impacts 4-H has had on your life, from small to large! Whether it’s gaining confidence to lead a 4-H meeting, mastering a new skill, inspiration to follow a career path, or even making new friends, tell us about the 4-H experience you’ll take with you for the rest of your life!

Volunteers in Preparation (VIP) Orientation All those adults interested in volunteering actively with their club or project should plan to participate in VIP Orientation. This is a workshop intended to provide background information about 4-H in Jackson County, what it means to be a 4-H volunteer, and strategies to ensure safe, educational activities and projects for youth.

VIP is the new name for the adult volunteer orientation training that all approved 4-H volunteers have gone through. The training has been updated, and here’s what it covers:

General Overview of UW-Extension and the role of ALL volunteers throughout WI UW-Extension

Risk Management and Insurance Overview for ALL volunteers throughout WI UW-Extension

What WI 4-H Youth Development is (local information, and overview of essential elements, life skill model, experiential learning and youth adult partnerships)

Living the 4-H volunteer life (terminology, policy, direct application of risk management, etc.)

Please read the following carefully to learn about the procedure to become and approved 4-H volunteer: 1) Enroll as a parent in 4HOnline at http://

wi.4honline.com. 2) Go through the self-paced, web-based, required

Mandatory Reporter Training in 4HOnline. 3) Participate in 1 of the 3 in-person VIP trainings

listed below.

All trainings will be held at Jackson County UW-Extension. These are the only 2 training dates remaining in Jackson County during this club year.

New club adult leaders and project group officers should plan to attend one of these orientation workshops. Please contact Tammy Blom at [email protected] or at 715.284.4257. If no one has registered for a training in advance, the training will be canceled.

Volunteers’ & Leaders’ Retreat February 4, 9AM-Noon Jackson County UW-Extension Adult and youth volunteers are invited to participate in the Volunteer & Leader Retreat. The theme will be “Day at the Beach” and it will include volunteer development, networking, door prizes and leader pampering. All 4-H volunteers are invited to participate, even if your club/group has already filled the requirement.

Every chartered club and group is required to send a representative to one of the Annual Leader Trainings to maintain their charter. The other option for meeting this requirement is to attend 5 of the 6 bi-monthly board meetings (third Mondays of odd numbered months, 5:30PM at UW-Extension).

Please RSVP to Tammy at [email protected] or 715-284-4257.

Special Thank You to Board Representatives (We still need representatives from a few clubs!) No doubt about it! It’s a commitment of time and energy to attend meetings of any Board, and it’s such an important commitment to make. 4-H is a volunteer-driven organization, and participation in the board is an opportunity to learn about all that the organization has to offer youth and adults alike.

Bi-monthly meetings (odd numbered months) also include volunteer development opportunities.

A special thanks to the following individuals/clubs for making the commitment already and are communicating valuable information from the Board back to their clubs: BRF Trailblazers—Natalie Cogswell Country Crystals—Kathy Zipfel Humbird Honeybees—Janice McFarlane Melrose Satellites—Tricia Waughtal Milk Duds—John Ross Northfield Go Getters—Kelly Brasda Rose Hill Ramblers—June Johnson Sharing Pioneers—Deb Johnson Whispering Hills—Marybeth Graham

Archery Sessions Scheduled The Archery Project is scheduled to start on January 8, meeting every Sunday after that for a total of 6 weeks. Times will be noon-2PM and 2-4PM. Families should email Mary at [email protected] with their preference of shooting times. Issues in 4-H & the Care to Share Form

Sometimes issues or concerns come up in Jackson

County 4-H. That’s why we have the Care to Share

form.

Care to Share (located at https://

jacksoncounty4h.wordpress.com/leader-resources/

fq/) offers Jackson County 4-Hers to describe the

issue, explain why it's a problem, suggest a solution

and submit it for consideration. All completed forms

must include a possible solution and a member,

leader or parent signature. Forms are submitted to

Monica Lobenstein, 4-H Youth Development Agent,

who then forwards it to the appropriate group or

committee for consideration.

SARE Youth Educator Project for Beef, Sheep, Swine and Meat Goat Members We are fortunate to have another livestock project activity offered here in Jackson County! Jessie Oberlin wrote a grant proposal and was awarded funds to involve livestock project members in a new and exciting activity. “Sustainable Beef, Sheep and Swine Production in WI-What is It and Where Do We Find It?” is a series of workshops and a two day farm and industry tour that will be offered starting in February, 2017. Four workshops will define and explore livestock production that is economically sound, ecologically viable and socially responsible. Workshop presenters will offer real life experiences detailing their production methods. Livestock project members will then have the opportunity to participate in a two day tour of the UW Research Station in Lancaster, WI, Organic Prairie Meats in La Farge, UW-Platteville’s new swine facility and two livestock operations in southwest WI. We will stay overnight at UW-Platteville’s Pioneer Farm’s Cooper Living and Learning Center.

This project will involve four one and one half hour workshops, two one page essays and the two day tour. There will be no cost to participants. Once they meet the requirements of attending 3 out of the 4 workshops and completing their essays on time they will be eligible to participate in the two day tour.

This program will be open to the first 15 youth who sign up. We will also need some adults to accompany the group on the tour. Because there is a great deal of planning that will go into this program please let Jessie know if you plan to participate by January 1st. As stated earlier the first 15 youth to sign up are in the program.

Jessie’s contact info: [email protected] or

Activity Scholarships Available to Youth

Money is tight all across the county. The Jackson County 4-H Parents & Leaders Association Executive Board wants 4-H families to know they don’t want money to keep youth from participating in 4-H activities that they will enjoy and benefit from.

If your family needs help with a fee for an educational opportunity for youth, contact Monica Lobenstein to learn more about how the Parents & Leaders can help. Requests will be kept confidential.

Winter Weather ‘Tis the season for freezing precipitation, slippery roads, and unpredictable weather. Even though we haven’t had much of the white stuff, it’s good to keep it in mind.

As 4-Hers, we love to get together, and safety has to come first.

4-H events and activities may be canceled on short notice if the weather is threatening. Please watch your emails and voicemail messages if the forecast is unpleasant. When in doubt, feel free to call us at 715-284-4257.
