Track and Field Day Our meet is scheduled for Friday, May 5th (rain date—Tuesday, May 9th). The students have been praccing hard during physical educaon and DPA. This day will be filled with fun, fitness and trying to achieve our personal bests! Here are some things to remem- ber-clothes for the weather (layered cloth- ing is best) -running shoes and athlec top and boom -sun protecon (sunscreen, hats, glass- es) -water bole -lunch or lunch money -event schedule and maybe a me telling device As it is a school day, please leave all electronic devices and cameras at home. French (Mlle. Wonnacott) In French, we are continu- ing with our unit called “Guess Who”. In this unit we are studying body parts and other physical charac- teristics, to play the game Guess Who. After this, we will build upon the descrip- tions to add family mem- bers. The students will be giving an oral presentation describing their family members. Please watch your child’s agenda as they will need to bring pictures in of their family members for this presentation. Language Our lessons this month are inspired by our nation’s sesquicentennial! We have just finished up our entries for the Doodle 4 Google contest. This media literacy activity had us envisioning what the next 150 years might look like in Canada. Next, we will turn our atten- tion to some non-fiction texts, specifically biog- raphies. We will be researching some of history’s greatest Canadi- ans. Each stu- dent will select their own candidate and then build an argument to convince others that he/she is the greatest Canadian! We will use a variety of graphic organizers to categorize our information as we col- lect it. The information will then be presented in both written and oral form. Mathematics Currently, we are looking at patterns. We are extending geometric patterns by building and drawing them. We are converting the data into number patterns to make predictions. It is amazing how much our multiplication facts help us even when problem solving by finding a pattern. At the same time, we are looking at the opposite of multipli- cation, division. Soon, we will also tackle the topics of area and perimeter. We look forward to a lot of hands on activities during this unit! Science and Social Studies We are wrapping up our study of habitats. Our final investigation involves the impact that humans have on the habitats of plants and other animals. Follow- ing the completion of our science unit, we will begin a social studies topic. We will be taking a look back through history. Specifical- ly, we will research Early Societies (3000 BC—1500 CE). This involves ancient civilizations from around the world and Medieval Times. What Are We Learning? Mindfulness and Yoga Our class has been selected to participate in a 6-week series of yoga classes. These sessions will also include some mindfulness exercises. As we practice our balance, strength and flexibility with yoga poses, we will also bring attention to self-regulation, concentration and self- awareness.
