At our July meeting, Ted Matson did a very nicelecture and demonstration for us. We all had a chanceto learn and enjoy the program. We are always happy tohave Ted visit our club, and many thanks to Ted for hisgenerous donation.

{gaginners ClassWe potted the little olives into brown bisque

bonsai pots and the trees showed very goodprogress. Most of them have sprouted newgrowth due to being cut back earlier in thesummer. This is the way that we develop treesand the little olives are at the beginning of along journey to become a bonsai. How manywill we see in a show someday? Thank youvery much, Dave Rochester and all of thededicated volunteers who keep the beginnersclass running smoothly!

\ For August, we start the last beginnersclass of the year. We will be using niceshimpaku junipers, with fine foliage and good

growth. The class is already sold out, so if youmiss this one, besure tosign upfor the first‘class in January, 2011! Dave Rochester hasgraciously agreed to conduct this session forus, using his excellent Powerpoint presentationthat makes the information more clear andaccessible to the beginners. Thank you, Dave!

stories and taught us about HB101. He also brought along _some new potting material, made from crushed glass andfoam, that is a substitute for pumice. Stuart was wellreceived and we all enjoyed his visit very much. He alsosold out of the HB101that he brought! Thank you, Stuart, for coming down and talking to us.

For August, we had planned to have John Voss withhis big juniper trees. But this will have to wait. Instead, wewere delighted to hear that Jim Gremel will be bringing tenlittle junipers, at $15 each, to demonstrate to theIntermediate class. He will be instructing on his techniquefor wiring and twisting junipers at an early age. Thisprovides the tree a lot of movement and interest to thetrunk. So, John will conduct his class in Novemberinstead. Folks interested in Jim Gremel's class andtechniques can call or email Cary Valentine to reserve aspot. Spots are limited and the trees are inexpensive, sograb it while you can! Find Cary's contact information inthe list of Board members.

members at the San Diego Fair. Below isShirley Kavanaugh providing guidance onhow to create mame or shohin size bonsai. This is her specialty. The small specimenshave special watering needs as well asspecific humidity to keep them healthy. Thisis both due to the small size of the pots andthe root system. She is on the demostrationstage in the floral area.

Above are Abe and Cristina Far. They are I,providing a demonstration on pinching andtrimming a juniper. There are several bonsaispecimens on the table. , During their work, passersby would stop and askquestions about bonsai in general. This is anawesome venue to be able to promote the club. The group had SDBC flyers and handed themout. Thanks for taking the time to volunteer forthis activity and promoting the SDBC.

' #104 August, 2010Watering is important during the summer months. Don't

overlook the obvious drying extremes in a shallow bonsaipot. Root systems are stressed and continued moisture is amust. Neglect will cause twig dieback, leaf drop and leafdroop. Summer stress weakens a tree and threatens itsfuture health. Water more frequently, with shorter soakingperiods. Be sure the soil mix contains some humus to retainthe moisture as well as an aggregate (i.e., pumice, sand,d.g. or lava rock) to encourage good drainage. Earlymorning watering allows foliage to dry during the day. Earlywatering inhibits and prevents the formation and growth ofharmful fungus.

By Marty Mann

While watering your trees, briskly spray the tree'sfoliage to remove impurities and discourages harmfulinsects. Be sure the water penetrates the root ball. Removeexcess patches of moss or build-up of thatch that repelswater. Check the soil levels around the rim of the pot.Provide a ridge to encourage the water to drain into the potrather than over the rim. Keep checking automatic wateringsystems you may be relying on to be sure they arefunctioning properly. Have a bonsai friend keep an eye onthis activity if you are vacationing.

Shohin/Mame specimens do well in shallow trays ofsand or fine gravel. This promotes higher humidityconditions and reduces the risks of drying out. Trees indeep containers may only dry out on the surface, animportant fine rootage growing area, but may be saturatedin the depth of the pot. Test these conditions before anyarbitrary water applications. Watch for signs of poordrainage. Keep neighboring hard surfaces such as benchesor concrete surfaces wet. The evaporative cooling provideslower surrounding temperatures.

Summer months are so important when caring for thetrees. This is a period of extraordinary activity for gardenpests. The warm air and frequent watering encourageinsects such as whitefiies, aphids, scale, mealy bugs andred spider mites. Apply protective fungicides.

HB-101PresentationStuart Shim provided an informative presentation on the

benefits of HB-101, a natural plant super concentrate, aswell as a new type of soil additive product based onrecycled glass called Growstones. Stuart had the attentionof at least 20 of the SDBC members in the intermediatearea. He provided handouts and samples to the audience.

Due to the soil and nutrient balance that is needed for ourpotted trees, it is important to understand the micro‑environment that exists in the pots. A shift in soil moistureretention, or loss of nutrients, can affect or impact yourtree's health. Keeping a close eye on your trees, noticingany changes, and doing the research when you notice a

if only trees could talk - they do! They exhibit signs that tellyou how they feel. Consider these indicators when you aretroubled by 'tree problems'.

- Misshapen leaves--upward curling of the leaf marginsinto a cup is a classic symptom of damage from either asucking insect, a disease organism or a possibleoverspray of a herbicide. Investigate the cause and applyinsecticide or fungicide as required.

- Color indicators of plant problems-either a nutrientdeficiency in the soil or a problem with the root systemthat is unable to absorb the plant nutrients. The type ofcolor display is important. A pattern of progressiveyellowing of new leaves suggests a nitrogen or irondeficiency. Iron chlorosis will show on new leaves.Nitrogen deficiency affects the older leaves. Investigatethe cause and apply fertilizer as required.
