4 Welch Block. Our Queer Old Uncle

People sometimes accuse our Un-Sam, who is supposed to live atWashington, with being a spend-thrift; they say he spends millionsof dollars on many fool projects, andmakes millionaires of the men whosupply him with the steel and lum-ber and supplies of all sorts that heneeds, at higher prices than otherjieople pay.

Perhaps he does waste a bit insuch ways, but then he saves by theway he treats the newspaper man.He would not think of spending 25cents for a want ad in a local paperwhen needs something in that vicin-ity—cannot afford it—has no appro-priation for that purpose.

When he wants a new mail car-rier, he does not advertise in thewant column; he has a 'high salariedofficial of the Civil Service Boarddraft a touching appeal to the news-papers of the vicinity, begging themto publish as a news item the factthat an examination for carriers willbe held at such a time and place, etc.

In the past few weeks the Navy iDepartment has sold 166 war ves-:sels tthat had been declared obsolete, jThis is being done In pursuance of jthe rigid program of economy de-,creed throughout the naval service. |In addition to these, three battle-jships, four cruisers and twa gun-1boats will be offered for sale orjunk. The life of a warship is short. Those now being built may becomeobsolete in eight to ten years. If notentirely useless, thejl cannot be con-sidered fit for the flrkt line of battlewith the modern craft that will bebuilt. A battleship is very expensivein these modern days. While the Navyby selling the old ships for JunW. itmight be well to think about ,i,theeconomy that would result from' notbuilding warships in the first place. That cannot become effective untila general disarmament policy 1badopted.

An illustration of how quickly amodern ship or a modern gun maybecome obsolete is the announcementof experiments with a newly inventedgun which is expected when furtherdeveloped to hurl a projectile of fivetons from 200 to 300 miles. Theseclaims are made by a scientist as Dr.Miller Reese Hutchinson, formerchief engineer for Thomas Edison. He declares the velocity will be fromone to five miles a second. The noiseit made at the demonstration sound-ed much like the click of a type-writer, although this weapon wasin minirature with a barrel only 8

i inches long. He explained that theprinciple of burning powder, _whichdoes not permit waste, before theprojectile starts to move has been ap-plied in this gun. If it fulfills thepredictions this weapon would havethe power to make much war mater-ial obsolete and ready for the junkheap.

Taft Appointed Chief Justice Power of Repetition

When President Harding sent thenomination of William Howard Taftto the Senate Thursday, to be ChiefJustice of the United States SupremeCourt, he met the just expectationsof the American people In *U U»length and breadth of tshe land itYould b? difficult to find a man bet-ter fitted for this high Judicial posi-tion. The only possible objection thathas been urged against his appoint-ment is his age, but a man in hisC4th year, in such apparent healthes Mr. Taft, may have many years ofuseful service on the bench of a courtwhere retirement is not compulsoryat seventy. The senate immediatelyconfirmed the nomination by a voteof 60 to 4, Borah of Idaho, Johnsonof California, I.a Follette of Wiscon-sin and Watson of Georgia votingagainst him.

Successful advertisers are thosewho keep everlastingly at it. Theyunderstand the value of repetitionand never let up. An advertising au-thority says "A thing that is saidonce seems but an accident, a thingthat 1b repeated often enough slidesinto its place in the order of nature.

There was a good attendance atthe morning service. The church washandsomely decorated with cut flow-ers, and the choir rendered a mostbeautiful anthem. The pastor, Rev.Charles B. Thompson, occupied thepulpit and took for his text Isiah »:6,"His Name Shall be Called Wonder-ful." It was a most clear and force-ful presentation of the dynamdcpower of the life and influence ofChrist. He pointed out how somemen might excel in some things, butshowed how Jesus Christ, excelledin all things through close commun-ion he maintained with his HeavenlyFather. If the church was to be aliving forcechuroh it would have tobe permeated with the Spirit of theLiving Christ, then it would do ttiewonderful works He did.
