Ayurveda tells us that the root cause of all diseases is seeded in the past deeds (Karma) during thesojourn of the soul. When the bad karmas are unfolding, they manifest in various forms of healthailments. To cure, pacify one has to resort to multipronged approach, such as, medicine, givingalms or charitable donations, reciting various types of Japas (mantra), performing homas(Yagnya) and worshiping various deities.

    J ANM ANTARA KR I TAM PAAPAM VYADH I ROOPENA BAADH ATE T AT SH ANTI H I OUSH ADH A I H I DA ANA I H J A PA H OMA SURAARCH ANA I H I

The blueprint of the soul's journey is identified by studying one's birth chart using VedicAstrology, pulse reading and studying the Vaastu of one's living and work space. A learned Vaidya

(Ayurvedic Physician) should be able to investigate all these aspects and upon completing adetailed consultation should advise the guest, the proper course of therapies. Our speciallytrained IVAC therapist then uses these therapies under the supervision of our Vaidyas.

IVAC has also developed a custom tailored therapist training program. Our therapists go throughone year of rigorous training and learn all the Ayurveda therapies along with basic Ayurvedacooking and yoga instructor training. At IVAC a guest is considered god, the treatment room as atemple and the therapist as the priest. When such a bonding is created between our guests and thestaff we could expect the most optimum environment for healing.

We have lovingly nurtured many varieties of medicinal plants and trees such as, forest timber, fruit trees and thousands of sandal wood trees. Many species of birds visit IVAC and bring withthem plenty of positive vibrations. Mysore is located 2800ft (848Mtrs) above the sea level andenjoys one of the best climates anywhere in India, throughout the year. Mysore receives around30 inches (760 mm) of rainfall a year.

We have built a simple yet elegant Yoga/Yajnya hall. It also serves as a multipurpose hall for smallconference, party, teaching and training. Our soon to be chlorine free swimming pool is there foradditional enjoyment and relaxing. You may play tennis or take classes from our coach. Ourlibrary is equipped with good collection of books. Ayurved

    INDUS VALLEY AYURVEDIC CENTRE

Ayurved is the ancient Indian medical science, the origin of which can be traced back to morethan 5000 - 7000 years. This store house of

wisdom is considered to be divine in origin, which the celestials revealed to the enlightenedrishis (sages) by means of whom, it was passeddown to us in sutras (small phrases). 'Ayurveda'is a Sanskrit term, derived from two roots: Ayu,

which means life, and Veda, which meansknowledge. Hence, Ayurveda l i terallytransforms into the kn ow l edge o f l i f e , the onethat is eternal.

This holistic science deals with the three humanaspects that of body, mind and soul; as a singleentity leading mankind towards adopting anatural approach in creating a balance and instrengthening the body's natural healingabilities. Having derived references from Rig

Veda and regarded as an Upaveda (sub chapter)to Atharva Veda (two of the four main Indian

Vedas namely, Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Vedaand Atharva Veda), it is essentially a way of lifethat incorporates a healthy diet, ideal lifestyle

and behavior, natural herbal remedies, exerciseand meditation.

According to Ayurveda, the Universe evolved outof Avyakta (the un-manifested, beyond theperception of the senses), which involvesPrakriti (primordial matter) and Purush(primordial consciousness). Then it developedMahat (individual intellect) and Ahamkar (ego).

Ahamkar is said to further generate the threegunas (qualities): Sattva (the pure), Rajas (the

dynamic) and Tamas (the inert). Sattva andRajas together produce Jnananendriyas (senseorgans ears, eyes, skin, tongue and nose) andKarmendriyas (motor organs vocal chords, hands, feet, genitals and anus). While, Tamasand Rajas combine to produce Panchatanmatras(five subtle elements sound, touch, sight, tasteand smell), out of which evolves thePanchamahabhutas (five basic elements),namely: Akash (space), Vayu (air), Tejas or Agni(fire), Apa or Jal (water) and Prithvi (Earth).

It is of through the Panchamahabhutas where

the entire material world including, thestructural aspect of an individual's body andmind is made up of. Combinations of these basicelements result in the Doshas (three bodilyhumors), which govern the entire physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions of one'slife. Thus, forming the foundation for

Ayurveda's core principles. These doshas are:

    1. V a t a D o s h a : (air and space energy)responsible for all movements, such ascirculation, respiration, excretion andmovement of thoughts.

    2. P i t t a Dosha : (fire and water energy)responsible for all metabolic activities, such asdigestion, transformation from one type of bodytissue to another; secretion of enzymes andhormones, interpretation of thoughts, synthesisof knowledge and one's own judgmentalabilities.

    3. Kap h a Do sh a : (water and Earth energy)responsible for all lubrication of joints,

cerebrospinal fluid in the central nervoussystem, mucous in the digestive tract and deepemotional feelings in the mind.

These three bodily humors are commonlyknown as Tridoshas, which form the functionalaspect of an individual's body. A competent

Ayurvedic physician is capable of assessing ifthese tridoshas are in balance imbalance.Certain external and internal factors contributetowards dosha imbalance. While consumption

of contaminated food and water, exposure toextreme weather conditions, stress, strain, irregular and unrestrained food habits andactivities, bacterial and viral infections areconsidered to be external factors. The geneticand karmic aspects causing diseases areconsidered internal factors. Bringing doshasinto equilibrium is the study and practice of

    Ayurveda.

temperaments into three basic gunas (qualities)Satvik, Rajasic and Tamasic. Satvik qualitiesimply essence, reality, consciousness, purity andclarity of perception, which are responsible for

goodness and happiness. The mind is derivedfrom Satva. And Rajas is manifested as Pran (thelife force). All movements and activities are dueto Rajas. It leads to the life of sensual enjoyment, pleasure and pain, effort and restlessness.Tamas is darkness, inertia, heaviness andmaterialistic attitudes. There is a constantinterplay of these three gunas in the individualconsciousness, but the relative predominance ofany of them contributes to one's mentalconstitution.

    P r a k r i t i

Prakriti means the innate nature, character, physical and mental constitution or dispositionof a person. It is an important criterion forevaluating an individual's status of health.Proper assessment of the proportion of differentdoshas and gunas while deciding an individual'sPrakriti holds great importance. It gives severalclues in understanding the pathology of hidden

factors causing diseases and thereby helps incorrecting the internal constitution byincorporating a proper lifestyle and intake ofsuitable diet or medicines. By carefullyunderstanding one's own Prakriti, one can avoida lot many diseases. Thus, in Ayurved, Prakriti isa fundamental instrument in deciding anytherapeutic regimen. It is always beneficial for aperson to know as to what type of conduct andfood would be appropriate for his/her Prakriti. Italso helps in comprehending some important

    physical and mental characteristics.

    Pr a k r i t i T y p es

Depending on the predominance of a singledosha, or different permutations andcombinations, Prakriti could be of seven kinds:1. Mono types: Vata, Pitta, Kapha 2. Dual types:

    Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha and Kapha-Vata. 3.Equal type - Sama Dosha: Vata-Pitta-Kapha(balance of all three).

Individuals who are dominated by a single doshain their overall physical disposition tend to fallsick more often than those in whom the level ofall the three dosha are in balanced proportions.

This is basically due to the abnormally high levelof one particular factor and unnaturally low levelof others, making one an easy prey to externalinfluences. Many times, one or two doshas arepredominant and others are deficient. Based onthe following profiles of physical and mentalcharacteristics, an Ayurvedic practitioner can

judge the predominant dosha in the body(Prakriti) and decide the line of treatment.

    Va t a Co n st i t u t i o n :

A person with Vata Prakriti has more tendenciesto go out of balance and may have a dry, slim andpetite body. The hair, nails, teeth and eyesappear arid and rough; voice is frail, low andcracked. Due to the dryness, the vata individualdoes not get enough sleep. The diet, movementsand activities of such a person are volatile andhasty. The mobile nature of vata results in un-steadiness and excessive movements of joints, eyebrows, chin, lips, tongue, neck, shoulders

and limb. Such people are quick in initiatingresponsibilities but get irritable, upset oremotionally disturbed fast. They possess goodgrasping powers but have poor memory. Thecold nature of vata results in body stiffness, intolerance towards cold, tremors or shivering. The natural desires and cravings are inclined to

warm food and warm climate. They often dreamof running, jumping and climbing trees andmountains.

    P i t t a Con s t i t u t i o n :

People having Pitta constitution have highermetabolic rate, good appetite and have excessivethirst. They develop moles and skin eruptions, have soft and scanty hair and furthermore atendency towards baldness or prematuregraying of hair. Their muscles and joints are softand loose; perspire a lot and excrete largequantities of stools and urine. These individualsget wrinkle-skinned early in life; are intolerant

towards heat; have good digestive powers and

indulge in deep thinking. They frequently dreamof gold, sun, fire, fights, and lightning. Pittapeople are generally brave and repel any kind ofexertion. They get easily annoyed and have poorendurance.

    Kap h a Co n st i t u t i o n :

Kapha people of this constitution have an oilyskin that is soft and clear. With a pleasantappearance, good complexion and voice, theynormally are calm and cool in temperament andhave very mild emotional botherations. On theother hand, they are also lethargic, have poorappetite, and scanty sweat secretion. But

basically these individuals are well built with

sturdy body and compact body organs. Theycommonly dream of birds, flowers/garlands,swans, water bodies, and romantic events.Kapha people have good libido. They are strong, learned, and energetic with long life spans.Individuals possessing dual or equal-typeconstitutions have a combination of these abovestated characteristics depending on the nature ofone's Prakriti.

    V i k r i t i

According to Ayurved, when doshas areimbalance, it is called Vikriti. When a state of

Vikriti gets established it will affect the sevenDhatus (tissues); blood, plasma, fat, muscle,

bone, bone marrow, and seminal reproductivefluid; the three Malas (wastes); feces, urine andsweat; and

Agni (digestive fire) and result in variousdiseases.

    Consu l t a t i o n s :

A detailed consultation is conducted by ourVaidyas. It includes pulse reading, assessingconstitution (Prakriti) and any imbalance(Vikriti). A complete history of health problemsand a detailed discussion will take place between

you and the Vaidya. If you need (most people do)an integrative approach, it will be discussed indetail. You will also get a detailed advice onlifestyle and diet based on your constitution. At

Method - Shirodhaara is one of the most effectivetreatments for reducing stress and nervous

According to the modern medicine, localapplication like ointment passes through thestratum cornium into the blood vessel andreaches the appropriate organ. Thus the oilpoured on forehead is absorbed and easilyreaches the brain cortex. According to Ayurved,Tarpak Kapha and Bhrajak Pitta are basic factors

responsible for the nourishment of hairs.Shirodhaara leads to increase in the level ofneurotransmitters which provide relief inanxiety and thereby decreases the hair fall.Shirodhaara also leads to relaxation of head andneck muscles thereby increasing the bloodsupply to the head, which encourages new hairgrowth with improvement in hair quality.Continuous pouring of herbal-oil in Shirodhaarainduces hormonal balance and consequently theBMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is increased, giving

Karmendriyas (senses). Our body has naturalinstincts for the elimination of these toxins. However, due to factors mentioned above this

wisdom becomes impaired and does not performits function effectively. So, to re-establish thisnatural mechanism and to dislodge these toxins,

    Ayurved prescribes Panchakarma.

Panchakarma, in Ayurved, is a deepphilosophical means of healing. It is the ultimatedetoxification process. As the name suggests,'Pancha' in Sanskrit means five and 'Karma'means actions, so literally translated'Panchakarma', a set of five systematic actions ortreatments used for purification of the body. It isemployed to balance doshas and to flush out thetoxins from the body through the normal modesof elimination like the intestines, sweat glands,

blood vessels and the urinary tract. Thus, itrestores internal balance and harmony in the

    body.

The process of Panchakarma incorporates threestages:

    1. Poor v a K a r m a (Pr epa r a t o r y Pha se) .2 . P r a d h a n a K a r m a ( M a i n

    Pan cha ka r m a Pha se)3 . P a sch a t K a r m a (P o st P a n c h a k a r m aPhase) .

    . P a s c h a t K a rm a ( P o s t P a n c h a k a rm aPhase) .

    P oo r v a K a r m a ( F i r st P h a se)

Poorva Karma involves a set of preliminarymethods employed before Pradhana Karma toprepare the body, in order to encourage therelease of the deep-seated toxins. This includes;Deepana and Pachana (Digestion andstrengthening of Agni). Panchakarma shouldnot be performed when someone is having poordigestion, which is a low Agni. Even undernormal c ircumstances Agni must bestrengthened as a routine preparation beforestarting the next phase. Herbal medication in theform of tablet, powder, herbal extracts or decoc-tion is prescribed to be consumed 15 minutes

before lunch/dinner. This is normally done for

    2-3 days.

    Snehana (O l ea t i o n )

Internal (taken on an empty stomach) andexternal (as oil massage) administration ofmedicated oils for its therapeutic value is calledSnehana. The internal administration of

medicated ghee (clarified butter) is Snehapana, which lubricates all the channels and cells, including the lymphatic channels that bind tothe toxins. It also calms the mind and reducesmental stress by cleansing many unresolvedemotions at the sub-conscious level. After

witnessing adequate signs and symptoms ofinternal oleation, external herbal oil treatmentin the form of massage is done at dawn. Theentire process of oleation goes on for 5-9 daysdepending on one's Prakriti and the intensity ofthe doshas.

Swedana (Fomentation) The process of sweatingthrough a wet or dry method is Swedana. Thespecial herbal steam dilates the body channelsand helps liquefy the toxins that are moresuperficial.

    P ra dhan a K a r m a (Second Pha se)

The Panchakarmas are five different ways ofremoving accumulated toxins from the body andmind.

Note: A Vaidya prescribes specific herbalmedication and recommends an individual toundergo a particular karma mentioned belowdepending on one's Prakriti (constitution) and

    Vikriti (imbalanced constitution).

    1) V am an a K a r m a (Eme si s T h er a p y )

The process of inducing emesis and therebycollecting and expelling the Kapha toxins fromthe chest and the abdominal region through theoral cavity is called Vamana Karma. This ismainly administered for Kapha or Kaphadominant disorders like bronchitis, chroniccold, sinus, asthma, cough, and respiratorycongestion. After the Poorva Karma, an herbaldrink consisting of Madanaphala (emetic nut),

yastimadhu (licorice) and milk are given early inthe morning after Abhyanga on an empty

stomach. As a result of which, vomiting willeither occur spontaneously or is stimulated by

gently tickling the throat. The vomiting will takeplace smoothly bringing out all the Kaphadoshas from the body. Following this, an herbaldhoomapana (smoking an herbal cigarette) isdone to stop the nausea feeling.

At IVAC we have treated people suffering fromchronic asthma all their life and people withrespiratory allergies. These people were onsteroids, bronchodilators and variousantihistamine drugs for a long time. They have

become totally free of their asthma and allergiesafter the Vamana Panchakarma. The AvalambakKapha and Udana Vaayu are the main culpritscausing this dreadful health problem. All overthe world people spend billions of dollars intreating the asthma and respiratory problems.

    2 ) V i r e c h a n a K a r m a ( P u r g a t i o nT h e r a p y )

Virechana is the technique of balancing doshasby means of therapeutic purgation. Toxins, which have been lubricated and bound by theoleation are pulled into the colon and expelled asloose motions several times. Virechana isfacilitated with medications like herbal paste, elixirs, decoctions, powders or tablets. Thismethod removes the accumulated Pitta toxinsfrom the body and mind.

    3 ) N a sy a K a rm a ( Er r h i n e T h er a p y )

Instillation of herbalmedications like oil, powder, and fresh

juices through thenostrils to balancedoshas from the head

    region especiallyh e a d , n o s e a n dt h r o a t . T h i sprocedure is usuallydone for 3-7 days,

where the prescribed drops/pinches of herbalmedication are administered into each nostril. The ideal timings for Nasya Karma are in themorning for curing Kapha related problems, noon for Pitta disorders and evening for Vatadisorders. It is the best procedure for treating

Sirorogas (diseases affecting the head area) likemigraine, chronic headaches, sinusitis, ear, nose

    and throat disorders.

    4 ) B a st i K a r m a ( E n em a T h er a p y )Basti is the process of administering herbalmedication into the body through the anal routeto balance vitiated doshas, mainly Vata. Colon is

the predominant site of Vata. Therefore, Basti isconsidered as an excellent therapy for Vatadisorders. It heals constipation, bloating, chronic fever, high blood pressure, sexualdisorders, kidney stones, heart pain, sciatica, arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms andheadaches. Based on the drugs used, Basti is oftwo types:

Anu v a sa n a Ba st i : Medicated oil or gheeforms the major component of the Enema

Therapy. It is also known as retention enema. Asmall quantity (50 ml) of the medicine isadministered as enema and it is retained forseveral hours. This helps in pulling the toxins, mainly Vata along with some Kapha and Pitta tothe colon. This is done soon after the food istaken.

N i r u h a B a st i : Here the decoction preparedfrom herbal extracts forms the major componentof the enema therapy. This enema isadministered after Abhyanga on an emptystomach. 400-1000 ml of the medicine isadministered as enema and the guest is asked toretain it for one hour and then let it come out. This is a very gentle procedure and can be givento all ages. It is known as mother of alltreatments. The course of this Panchakarma is 8,16 and 24 days depending on the healthproblems.

The process of letting out the vitiated blood fromthe body is termed Raktamokshana. This is doneeither by direct puncture of the blood vessel orincisions on the infected area with the help ofJalauka (Leech), Raktamokshana removeslocalized impurities from the blood, therebyhealing a specific wound/and purifying the

    whole body.

    Pa sch a t K a r m a ( T h i r d P h a se)

After Pradhana Karma (second phase) the bodyis clear of toxins and all set for restoration. Butdue to the efforts applied in the removal of theseimpurities, Agni (the digestive fire) becomes

very weak, which needs to be rekindled. Thegradual process of strengthening the digestiveability and the immune system, therebyensuring longevity is what Paschat Karma is allabout. It comprises of three steps.

Samsa r j a n a During this period the digestive power is brought

back to normal by administering liquid dietinitially, later progressing with semi-solid andfinally the normal diet.

    Shaman a

Once the digestive power is re-established, inShamana, specific Ayurvedic medication isprescribed for the treatment of the disease beingdiagnosed. After cleansing the body off thetoxins, the medicines work well and veryeffectively.

    Ra s a y a n a

Taking herbal preparations to revitalize the bodyand mind and restoring the natural luster, vigorand immunity to the body.

The Panchakarma procedures are now wellrecognized world over and the ancient wisdom ofthe Vedas has re-established its position onceagain. At IVAC, careful attention is devoted topromote Panchakarma in its pristine form. We

insist on absolute adherence from our guestsregarding the seriousness of the program. Since

only those who follow the procedure correctlyunder the supervision of our expert Vaidyas, experience the profound results of the therapy.

Any deviation from the rigorous stipulationsmay lead to unsatisfactory results. And in someextreme cases, it may even be harmful to one's

well-being if not followed properly. One can trulyappreciate the benefits of Panchakarma byfollowing the instructions mentioned below.

    Pancha ka r m a Gu i d e l i n es:

    1) Avoid smoking and consuming alcoholsince they result in accumulation of toxins in the

body, both physical and mental. The very reasonwe are administering Panchakarma for you is toremove these toxins. Thus, it is absolutelynecessary for you to abstain from these habits.

    2) Keep yourself warm and use warm waterfor consumption and cleaning purposes. Usingcold water will prevent the medications served to

you from reaching the destinations, where thetoxins are loaded. Warm water improvesperipheral circulation and thereby assists themedications in treading the right path.

    3) During the Panchakarma you arerecommended to wear a head cap, gloves, socksand cover yourself with warm clothes. Some-times it could be uncomfortable because of theheat you experience, but it will benefit you with

    better results.

    4) Do not ignore your natural urges.Controlling urination or bowel movements mayresult in re-circulation of toxins. So it is essentialto flush out these wastes from the body

    frequently.

    5) Please note: Sex is not regarded as anatural urge. During Panchakarma, having sexor having stimulating romantic thoughts are notrecommended. Ayurveda believes the finalessence in men (Shukra dhatu) and in women(Arthava dhatu) is vital for one's physical, mental and spiritual energy. It is also said toenhance the results of Panchakarma. Having sexor indulging in romantic thoughts would deplete

this final essence in the body. Therefore, it isnecessary to preserve this dhatu during and

immediately after Panchakarma.6) Avoid rigorous exercises! Any unduephysical movement/exercise, will make themedications introduced to you get absorbed inthe body to the point beyond getting bound to the

toxins and eventually fails in its purpose ofPanchakarma. For this reason, our Vaidyascarefully formulate a set of yoga exercises, which

will not cause any harmful effects.

    7) Converse in low tone! Conversing loudlydue to anxiety/annoyance will not allow themedication to reach the various organs whereunresolved anger, sorrow and tensions arelodged. So to purify the mind throughPanchakarma, it is essential to abide by thisparticular advice.

    8) Avoid sleeping during the day! Althoughone feels very sleepy especially throughout thetherapy period, please avoid from falling asleepduring the day as it aggravates the Kapha toxins. This could be achieved by taking little mild walksaround the room and in the garden.

    9) Avoid reading extensively! Reading atlength strains both body and mind, which is notadvisable during Panchakarma. If you are soinclined, you may read about holistic health orspiritual matters.

    10) Watching TV, using computer, readingnewspapers should be minimal or totallyavoided.

    11) Follow your dietary instructions. You willbe given special diet during Panchakarma. Please consume only that diet. If you have anyspecific questions regarding your diet consultour Vaidyas. Food will be served as prescribed inthe diet chart prepared by our Vaidyas based onone's Prakriti and nature of treatmentadministered.

One may experience some signs and symptomsof headache, skin rashes/itching, diarrhea, nausea, low energy level, abdominal pain, andmood variations please contact the Vaidyas to

    avail suitable relief.

Our Vaidyas may or may not permit you tocontinue with the medications, which you arealready taking for various ailments based on itscomponents and relevance and for any druginteractions.

    Un i t e d Na t i o n s.

H ow d o es a cu p u n c t u r e w o r k ? The classical Chinese explanation is thatchannels of energy run in regular patternsthrough the body and over its surface. Theseenergy channels, called meridians, are like riversflowing through the body to irrigate and nourishthe tissues. An obstruction in the movement of

these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up inothers. The meridians can be influenced by

needling the acupuncture points; theacupuncture needles unblock the obstructions atthe dams, and reestablish the regular flowthrough the meridians. Acupuncture treatmentscan therefore help the body's internal organs tocorrect imbalances in their digestion,

absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through themeridians. The modern scientific explanation isthat needling the acupuncture points stimulatesthe nervous system to release chemicals in themuscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals

will either change the experience of pain, or theywill trigger the release of other chemicals andhormones which influence the body's owninternal regulating system. The improved energyand biochemical balance produced by

acupuncture results in stimulating the body'snatural healing abilities, and in promotingphysical and emotional well-being.

H ow m a n y t r ea t m en t s w i l l I n eed ? The number of treatments needed differs fromperson to person. For complex or long-standingconditions, one or two treatments a week forseveral months may be recommended. For acuteproblems, usually fewer visits are required.

A r e t h e r e an y si d e ef f ec t s f r om t h et r e a tm e n t ? Usually not! As energy is redirected in the body, internal chemicals and hormones are stimulatedand healing begins to take place. Occasionallythe original symptoms worsen for a few days, orother general changes in appetite, sleep, bowelor urination patterns, or emotional state may betriggered. These should not cause concern, asthey are simply indications that the acupunctureis starting to work. It is quite common with thefirst one or two treatments to have a sensation ofdeep relaxation or even mild disorientationimmediately following the treatment. These pass

within a short time, and never require anythingmore than a bit of rest to overcome.

    W ha t a r e t h e need l es l i k e? Do t h ey hu r t ? People experience acupuncture needlingdifferently. Most patients feel only minimal painas the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at

all. Once the needles are in place, there is no painfelt. Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid

and are made from stainless steel. The point issmoothing (not hollow with cutting edges like ahypodermic needle) and insertion through theskin is not as painful as injections or bloodsampling. The risk of bruising and skin irritationis less than when using a hollow needle. Because

your doctor carefully sterilizes the needles usingthe same techniques as for surgical instruments,or uses disposable needles, there is no risk ofinfection from the treatments.

    Does a cu p u n ct u r e r ea l l y w o r k ? Yes! In the past 2,000 years, more people havesuccessfully been treated with acupuncture than

with all other health modalities combined.Today acupuncture is practiced widely in Asia,Russia and in Europe. It is now being used more

and more in America by patients and physicians.Acupuncture treatments can be given at thesame time other techniques are being used, suchas conventional Western medicine, osteopathicor chiropractic adjustments, and homeopathicor naturopathic prescriptions. It is importantthat your physician-acupuncturist knoweverything that you are doing, so he or she canhelp you get the most benefit from all yourtreatments.

    A r e t h e r e an y do s and don ' t s f o r m e ont h e da y o f a t r ea tm en t ?

Yes! To enhance the value of a treatment, thefollowing guidelines are important:

Do not eat an unusually large meal immediatelybefore or after your treatment. Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consumealcoholic beverages within six hours before orafter the treatment. Plan your activities so thatafter the treatment you can get some rest. This isespecially important for the first few visits.Continue to take any prescription medicines asdirected by your regular doctor. Substance abuse(drugs and alcohol) especially in the week priorto the treatment will seriously interfere with theeffectiveness of acupuncture treatments.Remember to keep good mental or written notesof what your response is to the treatment. This isimportant for your doctor to know so that thefollow-up treatments can be designed to best

This is performed to bring harmony to each ofthe 9 aspects of the planetary energies that areunderlying archetypes of all activities in this

world. One way to understand the 9 planets isthrough the 9 numbers we use every day.1. Is the sun; it is unity, totality, the soul, the fullexpression of all.

    2. Is the moon, it is duality, change, expansion ofthe soul into the world of the mind where thereexists dual qualities that appear to be butunderlying the mind is the totality.3. Is the expression of our actions, it is Mars, it isall actions and activities undertaken.4. Is Mercury, it is the square with four sides; it isharmony, balance, bringing 1, 2, 3 into form.5. Is Jupiter or Guru in Sanskrit. It is the light ofthe teacher and the harmony and mid-point

where all knowledge naturally flows from.6. Is Venus, it is the artistic expressions of life; itis the form, beauty and refinement, arts, danceand music.7. Is Saturn or Shani. Saturn is said to be thegreatest of all yogis; 7 is the embankment fromthe material world into more subtle realms, as

    Vaas t u - The I n d i a n A r t o f P l a cem en t

Vaastu is a Sanskrit word meaning 'the science ofstructures'. It is a traditional theory ofarchitecture that guides the design andconstruction of buildings in harmony with the

natural laws of the universe. As Einstein proved, everything in existence, sentient and non-sentient, is ultimately a field of energy. Vastu isthe pure, subtle energy that underlieseverything, while vaastu is the manifestation orexpression of that energy as matter. Everystructure whether it is a building or a fence, astatue or a piece of furniture, a piece of music orother art from has its own subtle energy. Vaastuis the science of working with these fields ofenergy, guiding us to arrange structures so thattheir underlying energy fields are beneficiallymanipulated according to proportion anddirection.

Vaastu describes desirable window and doorlocations, color schemes, symbols, artworks andfurniture arrangements. It also addresses theoptimum type of soil, location of plants and

water features, and construction of fences andcompound walls. The science of vaastu is ameaningful dialogue between mind and nature, enabling us to better understand the energyfields of various objects around us as well asthose of invisible cosmic bodies that affect ourminds and bodies, influencing our lives directlyand indirectly. Vaastu considers a dwelling to befull of life force. It informs us how to makedwellings that have rhythm and beauty, that

vibrate perfectly with nature. A structure builtaccording to vaastu is a science based on Vedicmathematics, one of the most advanced forms of

knowledge in our universe. Thus the measuringsystem of vaastu is quite different from that of

feng shui, which is not based on the same depth ofcalculations. In vaastu, each habitation has to beindividualized, taking into consideration severalsignificant factors, including orientation, direction, proportion, and the activities performed within, and the personalities and vocations of the

    inhabitants.

Today many people are fortunate to enjoy abundantphysical comforts as well as a long life, yet they feelinadequate and unhappy. They suffer fromuneasiness in mind and body and do not seem to bein a balanced state of health. Often they are nothelped by modern science, which is seriouslylacking in its understanding of the connection andcomplex interaction between the mind and body. Thus, it seems appropriate to look to the ancient

Indian texts, the Vedas, for some the answers. Vedliterally means 'science' or 'knowledge'. The Vedasare storehouses of knowledge concerning theintricate balance of the forces that affect human lifeand all of existence. This knowledge was revealed tohumanity more than seven thousand years ago inthe Himalayas. Despite their antiquity, the Vedascontain timeless knowledge of the expression ofconsciousness that can help us find answers to ourmodern concerns about health and life.

Vaastu is related to two other Vedic science, jyotish(astrology) and Ayurved (lifestyle medicine).Jyotish the science of stars and planets and theirforces teaches us about the subtle principles thataffect and govern our physical and mental aspects.

Ayurved the science of life teaches us about thephysical, physiological, and psychological makeupof these forces. It helps us to see that in one sense. Our own physical body is a prefect vaastu structuretransformed into a living, vibrating entity. Vaastuthe science of physical structures teaches us how toplace or construct material structures, taking intoaccount the planetary forces and their effects on ourlives. When arranged and constructed according tothese principles, our home can be transformed intoentities full of life energy. Jyotish, vaastu and

Ayurved work together to help us live moreharmoniously and happily. Thus, this study of

vaastu incorporates aspects of the other twosciences as well.
