A version of you that.Is professional, but still realHas clear professional goalsDoesnt make you hate yourself for beingToo cautiousToo recklessUses appropriate technologyThese are different!1 & 2 are about your audience; this is about youTech is the last issue

This is the general shape of what well talk about, and Ill come back to each of these points one by one.(also note that Ill differentiate between 1 and 2 in the next few minutes)2

Presenting yourself professionallyWho do you want at your table?Think of it as a research projectRead and research.Read some more. Then contributeBe a real personDecide what part of your personal life can/should play a role in supporting your professional lifeUse the personal to create connections that foster professional conversationsEngage more than you broadcast

3

Supporting your professional goalsLong-term career/research goalsHow does this support that trajectory?Short-term career/research goalsDo you have applications out? A talk coming up? An article in process?Personal connectionsHow will this help you strengthen connections in your existing offline community? How will this help you strengthen connections in your existing online community? How will this help you make new connections?

Long term: Note how twitter stream contributes to all of these: Medieval historian, teacher, digital humanists, code geek, Web designerShort term: When I prepped these blog posts, I was doing a guest lectureship for the grad-level digital history seminar at IUB, and I wanted to provide advance reading as well as provide something concrete for the students in the class to refer to later. Note that this also contributes to my long-term goal as a methodologist in the digital humanities; writing about how I use tools is part of my short- and long-term career trajectory.4

Being yourselfYour online self is not the same as the next persons online selfWhat are your boundariesAre you cautious? Open? Will your online self be the same as your offline self?

Think-pair-share: Take 30 seconds to write down whats safe and whats controversial. Compare with the person next to you for 30 seconds.

Are your perceptions of those two categories the same as the person next to you?5

Using suitable technologyYour current communitys techWhat technology do they use now?Can you/do you want to do outreach to them about new tech?Your desired communitys techWhat technology do they use now?Is the community in flux? How fast does it change? How permanent or ephemeral are these technologies?Consider how long the tech will be popularConsider how long your communications will be available

To recap.A comfortable, professional version of the real you that communicates your professional goals clearly in the right tech venues.
