It’s a New Day at the Gittinger Music Center

The other day, a friendof mine was watch-ing his alma mater

(not C of O) play football ontelevision, and during abreak, there was an adver-tisement for the university.“I didn’t recognize a singlething from my era,” thefriend said. Although it’sbeen more than 30 yearssince he was a student,there were more changesthan he had expected.

The same is true, to some extent, at College of theOzarks. Students who were here years ago would surelysee some familiar sights if they returned. New buildingshave transformed the campus over the last several years;others are on the horizon.

Our Edith Gittinger Music Center is now complete,and work has begun on the Leonard B. Gittinger Centerfor Campus Ministries, located next door. Up the hill, atthe entrance to campus, The Keeter Center is progressingevery day. Plans for a new classroom building and a din-ing hall renovation are in the pipeline, and we look for-ward to the day these dreams will become reality.

Summer was busy with all these projects, and withothers as well. Just because classes are out doesn’t meanwork stops at Point Lookout. We had a great HonorAmerica celebration, and we welcomed thousands ofvisitors to the Ralph Foster Museum and to the otherattractions our campus has to offer.

One especially busy group here in summer is thelandscapers. It’s difficult to find a college with a prettiercampus than this one, and we are grateful to our land-scaping staffers and student workers for providing ussuch a beautiful place to live and work.

This issue of the Ozark Visitor celebrates many ofthese summer projects and much more. You’ll be able toread about the new Edith Gittinger Music Building andabout our landscaping program. There is also a featureon new faculty, as well as stories on some notable pub-licity we’ve received over the summer. We were espe-cially pleased to be part of a segment on Barbara Walters’

talk show, “The View,” on ABC, which discussed ways topay for college.

Finally, it’s that time of year again—I know it’s notChristmas yet, but start thinking about getting thosefruitcake orders in, so our kitchen will know how manythousands of cakes to bake. We don’t want to run out, soorder early! An order form is included in this issue of theVisitor.

Just because classes are out doesn’tmean work stops at Point Lookout.

College of the Ozarks earned national recognitionon the July 29 episode of ABC’s “The View.” Dur-ing a five-minute segment on unusual ways to

pay for higher education, C of O was the only collegementioned by name.

Show producer and nationally-renowned journalistBarbara Walters introduced the segment entitled “Cashfor College” by pointing out that “four years of collegeaverages more than $85,000.”

President of Ariel Capital Management and GoodMorning America’s financial contributor Mellody Hob-son described various ways to lower college costs.Among those were America’s “free universities” wheretuition is free in exchange for on-campus employment. Ifthat sounds familiar it’s probably because College of theOzarks is one of these “free universities.”

When explaining the work program at these schoolsHobson said, “Think barter. Instead of the sign saying‘will work for food’, it says ‘will work for school.’” Shealso described the programs as highly competitive.

“College of the Ozarks in Missouri gets nearly 3000applicants for 510 spots,” said Hobson.

The fact that students at C of O have the rare oppor-

tunity to receive a four-year education and acquire little-to-no debt load did not go unnoticed by Hobson.

“These aren’t Podunk universities,” she said. “Theseare real universities, fully accredited. It’s an unbelievableoffer.”

Other topics during Hobson’s discussion includedemployer tuition assistance, the UPromise Program,online scholarship directories and college investmentaccounts.

July and August are popular months for college coststories in the media. Last summer, C of O was mentioned

on an MSNBC program, “Power Lunch,” onwhich guest Seppy Basili, author of several col-lege guidebooks, was also giving hints on howto handle college costs.

“The View” is produced by and featuresABC News correspondent Barbara Walters,who appears on average three days a week,moderator Meredith Vieira, prosecutor-turned-commentator Star Jones and comedian JoyBehar. The show consists of hot topics in thenews, the best experts in their field, celebrityinterviews and general entertainment. The pro-gram celebrated its 1000th episode on Novem-ber 28, 2001, and is currently in its seventhseason on ABC.

It’s obvious that experts across the nationare taking notice not only of the price of highereducation, but the value of being able to workfor it at schools like College of the Ozarks.

In these times of Enron andGlobal Crossing, it is obviousthat the public’s faith and

confidence in the way businessis conducted today has dimin-ished. Unfortunately, this lack ofconfidence has cut across all bor-ders into the non-profit sector aswell. We’ve all heard about thelavish lifestyles and spendinghabits a select few charityadministrators have lived overthe past ten years. Yes, these

unfortunate acts have occurredwith philanthropic dollars intended to go for a particu-lar purpose, but we can concur that these examples arethe exception, not the rule. This is especially true for Col-lege of the Ozarks.

As you know, College of the Ozarks has operated,and continues to operate, through the generosity of indi-viduals across the country. Where most colleges and uni-

versities rely on student tuition and state appropriationsas sources of revenue, we do not. It is the faith and sup-port of our constituent base that has allowed College ofthe Ozarks to continue to blossom over the years. Werealize the obligation to be good stewards of those giftsby helping some deserving youth earn their college edu-cation.

I could provide a variety of examples of how theCollege is a good steward, but I will limit the evidence tothe area of financial development. The most widely usedmeasuring stick to gauge the effectiveness of a charity inraising money is the cost per dollar collected. Accordingto a study conducted by the Harvard Business Review,18 cents on the dollar collected was the recent nationalaverage for the cost of fundraising. Depending on theway apples are compared, we have averaged over therecent years 2 to 5 cents per dollar raised. This steward-ship can be attributed to the low number of staff mem-bers in our fundraising efforts and prudent spendinghabits.

We feel that being good stewards means investing

BUILDING BEAUTYNew Edith Gittinger Music Center a Jewel Boxof Sight, Sound, and Architectural Innovation

Construction on College of the Ozarks’ newestbuilding, the Edith Gittinger Music Center, isnow complete. The Center opened for classes on

August 25th, and work has now moved on to theLeonard B. Gittinger Campus Ministries Center, whichwill be next door to the Music Building. The new 27,000square foot building, funded by Dr. Leonard Gittingerand his late wife Edith, now dwarfs the previous 7,000square foot music center.

The new building, designed by the architectural firmButler, Rosenbury, and Partners of Springfield, incorporat-ed the already existing Music Building. A new glass exteri-or literally envelops the old Clay Jordan Music Building.

As a result, historic values tie together with futuris-tic design, giving the entire project a theme perfect forCollege of the Ozarks. The Gittinger Music Center hasoffices for the staff, and houses three state-of-the-artrecital and practice halls with improved insulation fromthe previous Jordan Music Building.

Students and faculty alike had nothing but superla-tive things to say about the new facility.

Bruce Gerlach, Chair of Performing and ProfessionalArts, conveyed his amazement after the completed proj-ect. “The new building is functional, with very warmand inviting spaces,” he said. “The feeling of lightnessand joy is conducive to artistic expression. The newrecital hall is a jewel; the old recital hall could fit on thestage of the new one. The entire building was built like afine violin; it was built for sound. The new project is bothvisually and aurally stunning.”

Joe Hardin and Mary Elizabeth Bradley, both musicprofessors, are also full of praise for the new center.“When I interviewed with the College three years ago, Isaw the old band recital hall for the first time andthought ‘oh no!,’” said Hardin. “Today, the new buildingis unbelievable and such a delight to teach in.”

“I’m delighted that these facilities are better thanthose of most schools,” Bradley added. “Our old buildingwas not conducive to learning and was very hard to prac-tice in. With our new building, I think it will inspire facul-ty and students alike to perform their best. This buildingwith its room and beautiful facilities will allow the Col-lege to hold meetings, competitions, and conferences.”

Casandra Grimes, a C of O junior, added, “I have alot of positive things to say. Its environment is great forlearning, and its facilities are perfect for students inmusic majors or minors. I think the building will makestudents proud of the music department.”

Dr. Gittinger and the late Edith Gittinger have beengreat friends of College of the Ozarks for many years.Their generosity has extended from purchasing newsewing machines for the Family and Consumer SciencesDepartment to providing the funds to reconstruct andrestore the Music and Campus Ministries buildings,which will bear their names.

“Dr. Gittinger enables College of the Ozarks to meetimportant needs,” said C of O President Jerry C. Davis.“The Music and the Campus Ministries Department are apriority here at the College, and we are eternally grateful.”

As every school year begins at College of theOzarks, it brings new classes, new books, hun-dreds of new students, as well as new faculty

members. This school year College of the Ozarks and itsstudents welcome four new full-time professors to theclassrooms in the Education, English, Family and Con-sumer Sciences and Military Science departments.

DANITA FRAZIERFor Danita Frazier, assistant profes-

sor of education, being an active part instudents’ lives is nothing new. Mrs. Fra-zier has been working in the school sys-tem for 17 years, serving as both aprofessor and an administrator. Shecomes to C of O from most recentlyserving eight years as Spokane MiddleSchool’s principal. She currently lives in Spokane withher husband, Danny. Mrs. Frazier has two stepsons, Roband Ryan, and two adorable step-granddaughters Abby,7, and Tessa, 4.

Familiar with the Branson/Springfield area, Mrs. Fra-zier completed her B.S., M.S. and Specialist in EducationAdministration at nearby Southwest Missouri State Uni-versity. Mrs. Frazier is no stranger to College of the Ozarks,either. Two summers ago, she instructed the Middle SchoolCurriculum course, and last semester she served as anadjunct teaching the same course once a week.

“I feel really honored to be a part of C of O,” Fraziercommented. “This is a great place to be. As an adminis-trator I hired many College of the Ozarks graduates, andI am glad to be a part of the team that educates such qual-ity graduates.”

TYLER BLAKEWhen Dr. Tyler Blake, professor of

English, first heard of College of theOzarks, it was not because of academ-ics, but due to the NAIA basketballtournament. Dr. Blake’s brother cameto C of O to watch the tournament, andjust happened to sit next to Dr. JamesBell. They began talking, and Dr.

Blake’s brother thought that since Dr. Bell and Dr. Blakeshared the same profession and field, they should contacteach other. Over time, the two English professors becamefriends and after a visit to the College, Dr. Blake appliedfor an open position.

Dr. Blake received his Bachelor’s from Mid AmericaNazarene University in Olathe, KS, and then made the

move to the University of Missouri at Kansas City, wherehe received his M.A. while teaching part-time at the Uni-versity. He then came back to Mid America Nazarene toteach, and was a professor there for 11 years, earning hisdoctorate from UMKC. He recently moved to Bransonwith his wife, Regina, who teaches at the Branson Alter-native School, and their three children Amanda, 13, Turn-er, 9, and Hadley, 7.

“So far I am very impressed with the faculty and thestudents,” Dr. Blake said. “There is a family feelingamong the professors, and the students seem respectfuland hard working.”

BETH HUDDLESTONBeth Huddleston has been actively

working in the Dietetics field for 25years, holding various clinical posi-tions. Most recently she spent 11 yearsat Skaggs Community Hospital. Mrs.Huddleston grew up in a medical fam-ily, and it is quite apparent that she hasa passion for helping others throughthis field.

For Mrs. Huddleston, spending time around Collegeof the Ozarks is nothing new. Her husband, Kevin, is a ’76graduate of the College and actually grew up on campuswhile his father served as Academic Dean at the College.Mrs. Huddleston was raised in Branson. She has alsospent much time at the College, serving as adjunct facul-ty for several years.

Last year, when a position in the Family and Con-sumer Science Department opened, Mrs. Huddlestonsigned a one-year contract and served as a full-timeinstructor. She spent the year teaching and getting toknow the students, and it is no surprise that when shedecided to apply for the position on a more long-termbasis, the College eagerly asked her to stay. “I feel verymuch at home here,” Huddleston said, “and I am privi-leged to be at College of the Ozarks.”

Mrs. Huddleston received her B.S. at Southwest Mis-souri State University, and her M.S. at Southwest BaptistUniversity, in Bolivar, MO. She also has two sons, Kyle,

21, and Sean, 18, who is currently in hissenior year at Branson High School.

CAPTAIN JAMES SCHREFFLERCaptain James Schreffler has a busy

semester on his hands. Not only doeshe carry the responsibility for all of theROTC Military Science Cadets, he will

It’s that time of year again--back toschool time, which also happensto be the time new college guide-

books are published. Since the late80’s, College of the Ozarks hasreceived special notice and acclaim inmany of the college guidebooks andother notable publications. This yearis no different.

Once again, College of theOzarks has been listed as one of thecountry’s best colleges by many dif-ferent publications. These accoladescome as no surprise to those in the Cof O family. We have known foryears that the program we offer isone of the best around. The only sur-prise may be that C of O was notranked at the very top.

This year, College of the Ozarkshas been named as an outstandingcollege by four very prestigiousnational publications: U.S. News &World Report’s “Best Colleges List,”Princeton Review’s “The Best 351Colleges,” Kaplan’s “The Unofficial,Unbiased Guide to the Most Interest-ing Colleges” and Newsweek’s“How to Get into College” guide.

The criteria these guidebooksuse for choosing the best collegesinclude many categories such as stu-dent retention rate, faculty-to-stu-dent ratio, class size, acceptance rate,alumni giving rate and graduationrate.

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORTThe 2004 U.S. News & World

Report’s annual “Best Colleges” isthe only one of these guidebooks to

rank colleges in numerical order.College of the Ozarks is once againlisted near the top of its category. Cof O was named 17th in the Compre-hensive Liberal Arts Colleges catego-ry across the Midwest.

There were more than 100 col-leges in the 12-state Midwest regionconsidered for the honor, and Col-lege of the Ozarks wound up beingthe only college in Missouri to belisted in the top 30 schools. The Col-lege has been listed in this particularguidebook for the past 14 years (Ifmy math skills serve me right, that’severy year since 1989).

U.S. News & World Report alsogave C of O recognition in the cate-gories of low acceptance rate and forlow debt load. Among Midwest col-leges, College of the Ozarks rankedfirst in lowest acceptance rate. In2002, the College admitted a mere12% of its applicants. The next closestschool to C of O was Lourdes Collegeof Ohio, which in 2002 admitted 27%of its applicants.

College of the Ozarks also camein first in the category of least debt.Only 21% of students owe any

money at all and, according to thepublication, the average debt isaround $5,000. This can be comparedto Union College of Nebraska, theMidwest college with the most debt.At Union, 64% of graduates owemoney in the average amount of$23,000. To me, this figure makes$5,000 look more than reasonable.

PRINCETON REVIEWPrinceton Review’s “The Best

351 Colleges” included us (again).This publication does not rank thecolleges, but simply chooses thecountry’s best colleges based on stu-dent surveys. In this year’s publica-tion, C of O was singled out in twounique categories, both because ofstudents’ low levels of alcohol con-sumption. C of O was ranked 16th ina category called “Got Milk?”, whichis based on low beer usage, and 18thin a category called “Scotch andSoda, hold the Scotch,” which wasbased on low hard liquor use.

As with many other collegecampuses across America,the landscaping department

at College of the Ozarks is a vitalasset. Flowerbeds and lawns add justthe right touch to every corner ofschool and are appreciated by stu-dents, employees and visitors alike.

So what makes C of O’s land-scaping program special? The differ-ence is that at Hard Work U.,students don’t just sit around andenjoy the landscape. They make itbeautiful.

Rain or shine, C of O students areall over campus, pulling weeds,dragging hoses and lifting heavy irri-gation pipes. And that is just thewomen. The men are kept busymowing acres of land every day andhelping make the campus look neatand trim.

Each section of the landscapingcrew has a team with a team leader.There are the mowers, planting andweeding, trim crew, irrigation, thefront line man and the machineworkers. All of these students, alongwith their four supervisors, work tomake the campus beautiful each day.

Head of Landscaping, DavidRay, has worked at College of theOzarks for the past 16 years and says

one of his favorite parts of the job ishis student workers. “The youthdrew me in,” he said.

Coming from a 20-year positionas manager with a farm company,Ray brought both ambition and expe-rience to Hard Work U. He is assistedby Josh Franks, a C of O alum, origi-nally from Cushman, Arkansas.Franks graduated from C of O inMay of 2000 and went to work atLandscaping shortly afterwards.

The most significant change atCollege of the Ozarks that Ray has

noticed during hisyears here has beenthe level of intensityof his work. C of O isbecoming more recog-nized every day, andan estimated 300,000tourists visit eachyear. The compli-ments visitors givethe campus inspireRay’s crews to workeven harder.

Since construc-tion on campus isthriving, there are

also new areas to landscape andmaintain all the time. Edward Dunn,C of O’s new landscape designer, isready to step in and create additionalareas of beauty wherever buildingsare being constructed or restored.

Dunn, a 1998 Hard Work U.graduate, joined the College of theOzarks staff after serving the city ofRolla, MO, as Park Foreman. Afterserving there five years, Dunn decid-ed he needed a change. “Hard workand students brought me back,” hesaid. Currently he is working on thenew Gittinger Music Building.

Also new to College of theOzarks staff this year is Nathan Bell.Bell graduated from C of O in 2001and took a position maintaining thenurseries for Orscheln Farm andHome in Boonville, Missouri. Withhis love for plants and arrangements,Bell was pleased to join the C of Ostaff as greenhouse supervisor andresident florist.

Bell said he loved being a stu-dent at C of O, and he especiallyappreciated the philosophy of work-ing for an education. “The diversityof life on a college campus is some-

thing that I wanted to rejoin,” Bell said. He got off to agood beginning as a staffer by entering a group of C ofO’s orchids in the Ozark Empire Fair and promptlybringing home several awards.

C of O landscaping students are pleased to havehelped enhance the beauty of their campus as well.Christopher Harris, a four-year landscaping worker,knew from the first day he came where he wanted towork.“I like the working environment and all the outsidelabor,” he said. “The work ethic I have learned here will

prepare me in future years to be an educator and coach.”Senior Allie Fish, a greenhouse worker beginning

her second year in landscaping, said, “As a horticulturemajor, working in my projected field now gives me a feelfor the job,” Allie said. “I enjoy my co-workers andalthough getting a tan wasn’t my main objective, I stilllove it!”

So, what makes the College of the Ozarks campusspecial? Could it be when speakers such as Former Pres-ident Bush and Lady Margaret Thatcher notice ourflower gardens? Or that the students and faculty them-selves know what a great place they live and work, andthere is no other place like it? Students have made thistheir home away from home and knowing they put allthe effort and pride into it earns them great respect anda feeling of accomplishment.

C OF O FEATURED IN HARRIS’FARMER’S ALMANACBy Hylke van der Velde

College of the Ozarks has been featured in the 2004edition of the Harris’ Farmer’s Almanac. The almanacwas first published in 1692 for “farmers, planters, mer-chants, laborers and gentle country folk.” The article,written by Diana West, describes the C of O’s orchidcollection.

It began with Clint McDade, who was the first stu-dent to register at The School of the Ozarks. McDadenever forgot how The School cultivated his interests,and in 1972, he gave 10,000 orchid plants to his almamater. Another amazing fact is that his orchids wereused in the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The article mentions landscaping supervisor DavidRay and his work both inside and outside the green-houses. He says that although each orchid plantrequires some individual attention, they are easier tocare for than most people think. His advice: tempera-ture control, no direct sunlight and no freezing.

West’s story also explains the student work pro-gram and its advantages. “Besides the financial aid, thework program helps students to learn on-the-job skillsand see the practical application,” student and horti-culture major Crystal Ross is quoted as saying.

This feature, which also includes tips in how togrow orchids, previously appeared in a magazinecalled Show me the Ozarks and was reprinted in theAlmanac.

Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges.“Like the Princeton Review this guidebook does not rankthe colleges.

In this year’s edition, C of O is singled out in a cate-gory titled “Schools that are Hidden Treasures.” Inclusionin this book is perhaps the most flattering of any, simplybecause the colleges are selected based on surveys filledout by high school guidance counselors. It says a lotabout C of O when high school guidance counselors allover the country think highly enough of the College toinclude it as one of the best.

NEWSWEEKThe final of these guidebooks, Newsweek’s “How to

Get into College,” featured C of O prominently in twosections. Once again, College of the Ozarks was listed asone of the nation’s choosiest colleges. In terms of admis-sions, C of O came in number five right behind Juilliard,Harvard, Princeton and Columbia—but in front of Stan-ford and Yale.

Even more important, College of the Ozarks had thehighest yield rate of any college on the list. Of the 12% weaccept, a whopping 89.4% actually enroll. Compare thatfigure to Washington University in St. Louis, whichaccepts 23.5% of its applicants, but less than 30% of thosestudents actually enroll for classes.

Dr. Camille Howell, public relations director, added,“The one downside to being listed as one of the choosiestcolleges is that we don’t want deserving students to bediscouraged and not apply because they think they can’tget in. Many of our applicants are turned down becauseof a high family income.

“If someone is reluctant to apply here because he orshe has heard it is impossible to get in, I would encouragethem to give it a try,” she continued. “If they’re deserv-ing, they’ve got a lot better than a 12% chance.”

In the same publication, College of the Ozarks wasfeatured as the top school in an article entitled, “Don’tPay for College. Go for Free.” The article highlights a fewschools that offer their students an education at absolute-ly no cost, as long as those students are willing to roll uptheir sleeves and put in extra effort.

College of the Ozarks hasalways been a strong believerin fine arts, and it is evident

not only in the art department. Stu-dents also show off their artistic skillsin many hand woven-creations pro-duced on campus at the EdwardsMill Weaving Studio.

The Weaving Studio opened in1972, along with Edwards Mill. Theold-fashioned studio sits amongstbright colorful spools of thread onthe top floor of the mill.

However, the tradition of weav-ing at College of the Ozarks is mucholder. First Lady Eleanor Rooseveltsaw weaving as a prime way forwomen to earn extra money duringthe Depression, and she was respon-sible in-part for the WPA’s (WorkProgress Administration) decision todistribute hand looms into variousschools, including The School of theOzarks. The tradition she began con-tinues today.

With 13 antique looms rangingfrom 30 to 100 years old, the 12 C ofO students working at the Mill defi-nitely keep themselves busy. Thelooms and equipment the studentspresently use are gifts from variousdonors, mostly from Missouri. A feware donated from Eureka Springs,Arkansas.

To weave a project, the studentmust first string a set of threads ver-tically on the loom, called the warp.Next she uses a set of cross threadsknown as the weft, to pull threadover and under the warp. Thisprocess is repeated until the project iscompleted.

Student workers weave all kindsof crafts such as placemats, coasters,scarves, rugs, tote bags and variousother woven goods, which are avail-able for purchase at Edwards Mill.These products will also be sold atthe new Keeter Center opening in thefall of 2004.

Some woven products, such as“Lovers Knot” and “Rosepath”placemats and coasters, are for saleboth on campus and by mail order;but most of the weaving products donot have a particular pattern. Due totheir creativity in color and design,and to their unique nature, theseproducts are only available for pur-chase at the Mill.

“I like this job because I likebeing crafty and creative,” said KimKimball, a senior at C of O. The stu-dents working in the Weaving Studiolike what they do, as much as thesupervisors like working with them.Supervisor Glenna Miller says, “The

students here are all very enjoyableto work with.”

There are also a lot of perks toworking at Edwards Mill. ChristinaSmith points out, “If I start early I canget most of my Christmas presentsmade.” It saves money for the stu-dents in the long run, but they stillhave to pay for anything they wouldlike to keep. The materials and howmuch time it takes to make eachpiece determines the price of theproduct.

The weaving does not stop withplacemats and rugs. Edwards Millalso weaves colorful, unique baskets,available exclusively at the mill. “It’sfun designing different baskets,” saidKimball.

Aside from all the wonderfulwoven products, the students at themill grind a variety of mill productssuch as cornmeal, pancake mix, flourand much more. These are for sale,both on campus and by mail order.

Lieu-tenant Colonel Gary Herchenroeder, who is taking theyear off to attend a master’s program at the Army WarCollege, normally teaches several of these classes. It wasLieutenant Colonel Herchenroeder who informed Cap-tain Schreffler of the College as well as the position. Thetwo men previously served together in the same aviationunit, 1st BN/135AVN, in the National Guard. “I amimpressed with the College family and the student body,”said Schreffler, “and I look forward to working with thestudents and the Cadets.”

Captain Schreffler is an ROTC graduate from Bene-dictine College, in Atchison, KS. He served with theNational Guard while working as a DARE officer inMaryville, MO. In 1999, Captain Schreffler went into theArmy Reserves and instructed ROTC classes once a weekat Northwest Missouri State University. Through theNational Guard, he originally was a Chemical Officer andlater went to flight school and transferred to aviation. Heand his wife Julie, an English teacher at Branson HighSchool, moved to Branson with their three children,Patrick, 10, Anthony, 8 and Theresa, 7.
