10 Web 2.0 application relevant to teacher’s work.
• As Web 2.0, the world wide web has become a medium for online software services. It is a universal channel where people can access remote software right through a web browser.
• Spreadsheeting, word processing, web-based email, project management, movie and file sharing, graphic design services and gps. All of these online software choices can be found via a web browser.
• While the web also remains a place for brochures and general information about the world, it is now also a medium for tools and computer services.
1. Wikis
• Sites like Wikipedia and others enable users from around the world to add and update online content.
2. Digital photo processing
• Online digital photo printing has been made easy. The online companies allow you to easily print pictures, create photo books, photo cards and much more.
3. Video hosting
• A video hosting service allows people to upload video content to share, distribute or place on a website. Users generally upload via the hosting service's website, mobile or desktop applications.
• This would be beneficial for school websites or for students to share their learning with others.
4. Photo gallery services
• There are thousands of free image hosts, some which focus on providing a cheap or free place to host an online gallery for photography, images or artwork.
• E.g. Flickr is a free way to upload and share digital images online. It allows us to create an account for free and you’ll be ready to upload soon after that.
• It’s possible to organize collections, share them with friends or limit who can see them too.
• Many school webpages use flickr to display student photos.
5. Word processing
• Using a computer to create, edit, and print documents. Of all computer applications, word processing is the most common. To perform word processing, you need a computer, a special program called a word processor and a printer.
• A word processor enables you to create a document, store it electronically on a disc or on a ‘cloud’ like Google drive, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters from the keyboard, and print it on a printer.
• This document, if saved on a ‘cloud’ can be shared with others and the owner can permit them to edit the content.
6. Spreadsheeting
• A spreadsheet is an interactive computer application program for organization and analysis of data in tabular form.
It can be used in many ways such as: • Observation sheets • Record of test grades• Attendance record• Reward charts • Record of tasks completed• Checklist for assessing group skills.
7. Music and File Sharing
• File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digitally stored information, such as computer programs, multimedia (audio, images and video), documents or electronic books.
• It may be implemented through a variety of ways. Common methods of storage, transmission and dispersion include manual sharing usb keys, centralised servers on computer networks, www-based hyperlinked documents, and the use of distributed peer to peer networking.
8. Mapping services
• Online mapping services are used for tasks such as planning trips, determining geographical positions, finding landmarks and businesses, obtaining addresses and phone numbers.
• This service benefits teachers and students across all curricular subject areas.
9. Blogs • Blogs are web logs that are updated on a
regular basis by their author. They can contain information related to a specific topic.
• In some cases blogs are used as daily diaries about people's personal lives, political views, or even as social commentaries.
• In a school context, students can use blogs as a record of their learning and teachers can use them as a method of assessment.
10. Social Networking Sites
• A social networking service is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections.
• Social networking sites can be used, if monitored correctly, to create groups. They can be used to help one another with subject content and research.
