About the School of Creative & Digital Industries The Technology sector is one of the most dynamic and exciting areas of employment embracing a

wide range of industry areas from Software Development and Electronics Engineering through to

Film Production and Fashion Design.

In the area of computing and software engineering, the College delivers Further Education, Higher

Education and bespoke skills training programmes, with a strong emphasis on new technologies

and participation in UK and international skills competitions.

The School of Creative and Digital Industries has over 1,900 full-time and 1,400 part-time students

studying courses at levels 3-5, delivered across all four College campuses. Students have access to a

wide range of industry standard equipment and the highest quality digital learning resources. In

addition, students have the opportunity to obtain industry certifications such as those awarded by

CISCO and Autodesk in addition to their main programme of study.

The ongoing development to meet the needs of learners and prepare them for employment in the

technology sectors requires the appointment of a Full Time Permanent Lecturer in Computing with

Software Engineering. This is a key post to deliver and develop our current curriculum to meet the

emerging skills needs in the computing and software engineering sector, meet industry and other

stakeholders’ needs, support the delivery of Department for the Economy strategies and achieve

objectives laid down in the College Development Plan.

Job Description

ROLE: IT/Digital Media Technician

CONTRACT: Permanent

LOCATION: The successful applicant may be required to work in any of the Colleges buildings, as necessary.

SALARY/GRADE: Band 6 (£30,507 - £32,878)

TERMS & CONDITIONS: Support

RESPONSIBLE TO: Technician Coordinator

RESPONSIBLE FOR: The post holder will be required to supervise the work of Technician staff within the School of Creative and Digital Industries

JOB PURPOSE: To offer authoritative technology advice, assistance, maintenance and support to Belfast Metropolitan College staff, students and service users, ensuring that business needs are met in regards to digital media and IT technical systems. To operate, configure, support and maintain a wide range of broadcast, multimedia and IT related equipment to appropriate standards.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

To operate, support and maintain high definition digital media production equipment, including digital mixing (sound and vision) and digital storage and transfer systems, high definition digital camera, green screen capture software, digital audio production desks and studio lighting systems.

To configure, support and maintain a range of IT equipment and applications, including servers, networks, cloud solutions and supporting and maintaining Microsoft and Apple platforms.

To act as an IT systems lead supporting various technologies used within digital skills courses e.g. programming languages, database technologies, networking, client/server and cloud platforms.

To work collaboratively within resources to deliver an integrated support and maintenance approach, operating equipment if required in support of the business need.

To liaise as necessary with manufacturers, key experts and external organisations to understand and resolve, in a timely and efficient manner, engineering issues such as equipment failure or unplanned down-time in keeping with SLAs and maintenance contracts.

To execute corrective and planned maintenance schedules as required.

To ensure the correct use of broadcast equipment functions within manufacturers parameters and where applicable produces content within the scope of the Ofcom Code of Practice.

To ensure that IT equipment and software functions are used within manufacturer’s parameters and licenses.

To manage tasks and ensure they are delivered within time and budget.

To ensure that all necessary records are properly documented and kept.

To promote safe and environmentally correct working procedures.

To lead discussions and investigations concerning operational or customer issues through to completion and ensure that processes are adapted or reinforced accordingly to meet business need and operational requirements.

Supporting learning before and during lessons by: o Preparing and making available equipment, material, apparatus and tools o Demonstrating techniques as specified by the lecturer, tutor or trainer and providing

assistance and supervision to staff and apprentices/trainees during practical, theory sessions, exams and assessments.

o Issuing equipment and materials to students in accordance with College procedures o Monitoring work spaces allocated for self-directed study.

Supervision of technician staff within the School of Electronic and Computing Technologies

Monitor and report on equipment and materials to ensure safe usage, storage, maintenance and compliance with all relevant instructions, guidelines, policies and, if applicable, legislation.

Clean and maintain equipment and technical areas, including breakages and spillages and carrying out simple repairs dealing with storage and labelling.

Dispose of materials, chemicals and equipment in a safe, environmentally considerate and efficient manner.

Provide support to academic schools in asset disposal of equipment, materials and tools, adhering to asset disposal guidelines and policies.

To assess and monitor the work of students when necessary.

Monitor and report on material purchase, use and controls.

To carry out induction and on-the-job training for students, staff and authorised external groups or individuals unfamiliar with relevant equipment, apparatus, devices, materials, tools or working areas, referring them, as appropriate, to guidance, policies and, if required, legislation.

Manage specialised testing centres to ensure processes and procedures are compliant with awarding body requirements.

Carry out and/or advise on, within Health and Safety guidelines, the basic servicing and maintenance of tools and equipment both portable and fixed, and keep records of such servicing and maintenance.

Supervise and monitor requests for equipment and materials.

Maintain records relating to the movement or loan of materials/high value equipment ensuring effective stock and equipment control.

Prepare displays and presentations of work for promotions and assessment of work.

Prepare audit reports of equipment, consumables and practical work areas to agreed timescales.

Ensure inventory and assets register is completed, reporting on missing or faulty assets in a timely manner.

Monitor and report student / learner behaviour that places individuals or groups at risk.

Resource Management

Manage and maintain all resources and equipment (‘equipment’) allocated for the capture, production, post-production and distribution of digital media.

Ensure that equipment is maintained to the highest standard, liaising with technical support organisations when required and procuring support within allocated budgets, as required.

Developing an equipment booking protocol, that ensure that safe deployment and return of equipment within the building.

Maintain a log of equipment use, and generate reports for managers and senior managers on equipment usage.

Maintain a log and report on all breakages, losses, missing items and equipment defects.

Maintain and manage digital asset management on a digital media storage solution.

Maintain, through the College timetabling application, usage information of rooms where fixed equipment is located.

Liaise with curriculum areas to identify use and need of equipment, planning ahead to ensure that equipment is always ready for deployment.

Maintain an income report for equipment hire and usage as required.

Develop service level agreements for use with revenue generating customers.

To ensure ongoing consistent quality of service and assist with preparation for inspections and action any recommendations that may result from inspection to ensure that the school is run in accordance with appropriate requirements.

To keep accurate financial records to ensure that the College’s financial procedures are adhered to and income and expenditure are kept within budget.

Oversee the purchase and maintenance of equipment etc. to ensure the school is suitably equipped within the allocated budget and maintain up to date records of resources.

To liaise with the CAM/HOS/Finance regarding all the operational and financial planning for the school’s operations within College guidelines.

To supervise and provide advice, guidance and training to students, trainees and others on work placements or work experience in order that they receive the appropriate support and guidance.

To develop relationships with external agencies and professionals to ensure industrial liaison is maintained.

Maintain accurate stock control

Oversee procurement processes within curricular area for materials, equipment, stock, tools, devices, clothing (protective and non-protective) and apparatus, as and when instructed.

Administer the ordering, control and dispensing of stock, ensuring maximum efficiency of use and deployment.

Monitor inventory and stock levels, reporting low stock risks and planning stock purchases to ensure no break in service.

Once quotations are approved, raise requisitions for materials/equipment as required in the College Finance system, undertake goods received note process in College finance system on a timely basis and liaise with Finance regarding any invoice queries.

Receive, distribute and store materials in an efficient and effective manner, making all efforts to minimise waste

Receive and check items delivered are in good condition and that they agree with both the order and delivery documentation.

Ensure appropriate paperwork is recorded and submitted for processing.

Health and Safety

Undertake Health and safety duties include carrying out and documenting risk assessments, the control of hazardous substances in compliance with the COSHH Regulations, devising safe systems of work and general health and safety awareness enforcement.

To train students in health and safety matters, techniques, use of equipment, and to identify other appropriate training required. To ensure safety, cleanliness and usability of practical rooms, preparation rooms and stores.

To ensure safety and usability of all practical equipment, withdrawing equipment from use as required.

To initiate safety checks to an agreed schedule, and ensure safety records are maintained.

To ensure that portable appliances in use are safe and periodic portable appliance testing is carried out within agreed timeframes.

To ensure safe disposal of waste materials, chemicals and equipment, as necessary in accordance with agreed procedures.

To ensure maintenance of safe working practices.

To maintain procedures to ensure security of practical rooms and equipment.

Personnel Specification Essential Criteria

Qualifications EITHER: Hold a minimum of a Level 5 qualification in Computing, IT, Digital Media, Computer Science or related discipline and have at least 2 years’ relevant industrial experience in an IT related role.

Experience/

Knowledge

Experience of operating and supporting current generation immersive interactive technology equipment, AR/VR resources and related software.

Experience of configuring and maintaining IT systems including: servers, networks, cloud solutions and experience of using and supporting and maintaining Microsoft and Apple platforms

Demonstrable knowledge of the application of computer systems in the digital media industry, such as operation of industry standard technical equipment in media, post production and editing.

Demonstrable knowledge of the application of computer systems in the IT industry, such as configuration of servers, supporting desktop and mobile platforms and applications and developing/supporting bespoke software solutions.

HOLIDAYS

The College offers a generous holiday allowance to support staff. The annual leave period for support staff extends from 1 April to 31 March.

Shortlisting Process

All completed applications will be assessed by a selection panel against the selection criteria

relevant for the role.

Please note that the selection panel can only shortlist based on the information candidates provide

on the application form and cannot make any assumptions based on any prior or personal

knowledge.

The provisional date for panel shortlisting is Tuesday, 4 February 2020. All candidates will be

notified as to the outcome of the shortlisting process.

In the event of an excessive number of applications, the College reserves the right to enhance the

shortlisting criteria.

Selection Process

Should a shortlisted candidate still wish to progress, they must attend an interview and/or

assessment to fully demonstrate how they meet the criteria for the role. The interview will be by

competency based assessment. The selection process may also comprise of other assessment

methods depending on the role.

Assessments may consist of a range of techniques. These could be group exercises, simulated

exercise, role-play, presentation, psychometric testing, written or computer based exercises.

Details of the assessment will not typically be provided to candidates in advance unless the

assessment requires advance preparation e.g. seen presentation topic.

Reserve List

Where a candidate is successful in the selection process but no vacancy exists, they may be placed

on a Reserve List. Their placement on the Reserve List will be based on their rank order from

interview/assessment. Candidates will remain on the Reserve List typically for a period of six-

twelve months (dependent on role) from their date of interview.
