Message from the Principal:

Now that the weather is getting colder, I know that more parents will be driving their children to school and picking them up at the end of the school day. Again, thank you to those drivers who always cooperate with our pick-up and drop off procedure. This is the safest plan for all of the students and adults who are with their students.

It is necessary that all drivers follow our system as well as practice legal and safe driving practices. The following is a short summary of the procedures.

1. If possible, students should walk to and from school. 2. Unless drivers park their vehicles in legal parking places and walk their student to school property or pick them up after school, the drop off/pick up route shown below is to be followed. 3. Students who are dropped off in the back parking lot are able to enter the building using any back door – they do not have to walk around to the front or side of the building.4. No student should be dropped off or picked up on Lakeland or Summit.5. Please do not park on the east side of the parking lot during dismissal. It is not safe to back out into the line of drivers waiting for their children.6. The drop off/pick up line is always single file. The parking lot is not a cut through between Lakeland and Summit.

Thank you – as you are aware, we need everyone’s cooperation in this extremely important matter.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

If you have not scheduled a conference with your child’s teacher, please call the school office as soon as possible. Conferences are during the evenings of November 9th and 10th, all day on the 10th, and during the morning of Friday, Nov. 11th. These conferences are important times for parents to receive their children’s report cards and discuss their progress in school.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:

Although we may not want to be reminded, it’s a fact that winter is on its way. With Northeast Ohio’s share of severe winter weather, it’s important to remind everyone that while the district believes every day in school is critical for a student’s success, there may be times when the weather makes traveling to and from school unsafe and therefore, schools must be closed.

In the event the schools do close, parents and guardians will be notified at their home via our AlertNow calling system. Other ways to find out about the schools’ status are listening to the local TV and radio stations, checking the district web site at www.lakewoodcityschools.org, checking the district’s Facebook page at www.facebook/lakewoodcityschools.com or calling the district’s School Closing Hotline at 227-5708.

We know that parents sometimes disagree with the district’s decision to keep schools open during inclement weather. If this is the case, parents always have the option to keep their child home. That day will be regarded as an excused absence for the student and students will be allowed to make up any work missed. Please call your child’s school absence line to let the school know your child will not be attending due to the bad weather.

Finally, each year it can be a struggle for children to get to school on snowy days because of homeowners and businesses that neglect to clear their sidewalks. The district has teamed with the Lakewood Family Collaborative for a new initiative, “Clear 4 Kids,” that aims to raise awareness of the need for people to clear their snow and give our students a safe path to school each day. Please help us spread the word by reminding your friends and neighbors to “Clear 4 Kids.”

No-Cost Dental Care Available to Children Ages 3 – 12!

Ronald McDonald House Charities and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital are bringing the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to Trinity Lutheran Community Outreach on Saturday, November 19th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Trinity Lutheran Community Outreach is located at 16400 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.

The Care Mobile is a state of the art mobile dental clinic, and the program provides dental services with no out-of-pocket costs for youth ages 3 - 12 without a current dental home or provider.  Insurance will be billed (accepts Well Care, Care Source, Medicaid and private dental insurance), but no one will be turned away for a lack of insurance.

This service is not meant to replace or supplement available dental care, but is intended for those who do not currently have a dentist.  Parents will need to fill out a consent form following a tour of the vehicle and a description of the available services.  They can then sign up their child/ren for dental services, which will be provided during a follow-up visit later in November.

In addition to the Care Mobile, Trinity Lutheran Community Outreach will offer a free community meal at noon and a free fresh produce distribution from 11 - 1 on the same day.  All are welcome!  For more information contact [email protected].

Flu season is upon us and here are a few healthy tips to follow: Avoid close contact with people who are ill. The flu spreads from person to person.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Respiratory droplets contain the flu virus.

Stay home from school when you are ill. Children can infect others beginning one day before getting symptoms and up to seven days after getting sick.

Wash your hands often. Use warm, soapy water and dry with clean towels.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread when you touch something that has germs on it and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Drink plenty of water. A well-hydrated body has a better chance of fighting infections.

Keep your immune system strong. Eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, and be sure to get regular exercise and plenty of sleep.

If your child is on any prescribed or over the counter medications:It is the policy of the Lakewood City Schools that a parent and the Childs’ physician must complete a release for any medication. Medication must be brought, in the container in which it was dispensed, to the principal or designee by the student’s parent, guardian or other person in charge of the student. Medication will be dispensed by the school nurse or a designated staff member.

To make this Bake Sale a success, we need volunteers to donate baked goods and/or help sell at the bake sale table. This year's bake sale will be on Tuesday, November 8th - starting when the polls open at 6:30am and lasting until we run out of baked goods or volunteers!

If you are interested in baking - baked goods can be dropped off on Monday, November 7th at the office (during office hours) or contact Kimberly Barto (216)978-5888 to make arrangements to drop off Monday night to her home. We need lots of goodies! Cookies, Brownies, Doughnuts, Muffins, Breads, or the biggest seller Pumpkin Rolls! Please package them for sale in individual serving bags. Whole Breads sell really well too!

Please Contact Kimberly Barto ([email protected] / 216-978-5888) or

Susan Zanghi ([email protected] / 216-221-4373) if you are interested in helping us make this year's Election Bake Sale a

success!

There is one thing we can be sure of, your child will become a 5th Grader before moving on to middle school! It is an exciting time & we have been fortunate that each year our 5th grade parents ensure a celebration to remember! The Election Day Bake Sale is an important as it helps to fund the activities at the end of the school year.
