INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY STUDENT

EDUCATIONAL TOOLS FOR LEARNING

KHAN ACADEMY

CHAPTER ONE

• It is a MOOC tool created to provide a free, world-class education for everyone, everywhere.

• The academy produces micro lectures in the form of YouTube videos.

Khan Academy was designed with features for– Coaches (Teacher)

– Students

This tool is usually accessed online but there are applications that may help you to mirror and watch your videos whiles offline.

Examples of these tools are;– KA Lite

– Khan on Stick

– RACHEL

All these tools are free and open source and hence can be freely downloaded and used.

• KA Lite is software that allows users without Internet access

• Users can track their progress through videos and exercises

• coaches can log in and check up on their progress to identify which areas the students need

Goals

• KA Lite’s goal is to Khan Academy accessible to those who don’t have access to Internet.

• KA Lite can be installed on one local computer which acts as a server.

• KA Lite itself can be installed on the client device itself.

• How can students get an account?

• Students may receive their account information from their Coaches or Administrators if their account has been preconfigured. However, it is possible for students to create their own account. To create an account:

• Open KA Lite.

• Click the Sign Up link on the top navigation of the KA Lite home page

•Fill in the information on the “sign up for an account” page.

• Click create user to finish creating an account.

•After you have successfully created your account, the page will refresh to your account management page, and you will see a successful login message.

Watching Khan Academy Videos

• To begin watching the Khan Academy instructional videos, first make sure you are logged in to KA Lite. Then, select WATCH in the top navigation.

• Practice Exercises from Khan Academy

• Set up your computer as the server

• Present a document containing screenshot of the following screens.– Device Registration screen

– User account creating screen

– Video download screen

– Screenshot of knowledge map based on the videos downloaded
