Initially an agricultural power,Ontario became a great industrial center at the beginning of the 20th century, and became the maineconomic center of the country during the decades of 1960 and 1970.3

In August 2006, resided in the province 12.792.619 ontarienses (term used by Radio CanadaInternacional in Spanish based on "Qubec") (residents of Ontario), which representsapproximately 37.9% of the total Canadian population, spread over an area of 1.076.395 km.4

Before the arrival of the first European explorers, the region currently constituting the province ofOntario was inhabited by different native American tribes, belonging to three familias.5 the

chippewa lived to the North and northeast of Lake Superior, and hunted and gathered fruits for yoursustenance. The Hurons lived in the region of Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, and lived mainly fromagriculture. Both the chippewas and the Hurons were afraid of the Iroquois, a native Americanfamily of six tribes Allied together, highly aggressive, and nomadic character constantly attackingthem.

French tienne Brl was the first European to explore the region, doing in 1613, by order ofSamuel de Champlain, founder of Quebec. That year, Brle reached the South Bank of the OttawaRiver, in the region where the Canadian capital, Ottawa is currently located. In 1615, Brul hadreached Lake huron.6 Brule and Champlain noted that the region was abundant in animals such as

beavers, whose skin was much appreciated in the European continent. French hunters began to huntanimals in the region from the Decade of 1620, at the same time that French traders passed tocommercialize with the Hurons animales.5 skins during the 1630, other French explorers exploredthe region in the South of the Great Lakes. The region currently constituting southern Ontariobecame part of the French colony of new France.

French missionaries - accompanied by some French families - founded some villas throughout theregion, such as Fort Sainte Marie, where the cities of Sault Ste are currently located. Marie, Ontarioand Sault Ste. Marie, michigan.7 the main objective of the missionaries was to convert the natives ofthe region, such as ferrets, to Christianity, as well as that they assimilate the European culture. However, the Iroquois attacks forced these missionaries and settlers to abandon these villas. TheFrench would continue exploring the Decade of 1610 North of the Great Lakes region.

The expansion of new France - which until the 1620 was limited to the region which currently acts asthe Canadian provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and new Scotland - in direction to the Northwest,West, and South alarmed the United Kingdom, which meant that the British establish the Hudson'sBay Company in 1670.8 the British eventually allied with the Iroquois. Both constantly would attack

villages and the French traders of all new France. In 1754, he started the war between the Frenchand the British. The French lost the guerra.9 in the Treaty of Paris (1763), France ceded all Frenchcolonies located to the North of the Great Lakes - the colony of Acadia (New Brunswick and NovaScotia) and Canada - which was what is now South of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.10

Until then, only villages French in what is now Ontario were located where today are the cities of

Niagara FallsKingston and Windsor. Until 1784, the population growth in the region of Ontario, stillpart of the British colony of Canada, was very small. From 1784, with the end of the AmericanRevolution of 1776, nearly 10,000 American, loyal to the British Crown, colonists migrated south ofthe colony of Canada. Then, the number of native speakers in the South of Canada was greater thanthe number of Francophones. These settlers were of the British land, shelter, food, clothes and otheraid.

In 1791, United Kingdom divided the colony of Canada in two, lower Canada (today Quebec) andUpper Canada (today Ontario).11 both were divided by the Ottawa River. Niagara-on-the-Lake waschosen as capital of the newly established colony. The United Kingdom would be responsible forchoosing the new Lieutenant Governor. It was the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada JohnGraves Simcoe Simcoe.12 built several roads throughout Upper Canada and promoted the largestsettlement of the colony. Simcoe eventually decided to shift the capital of the colony, Niagara-on-t-e-Lake, to York, current Toronto. In 1797, all government posts had been made their transfer fromNiagara to York.13

The population of Upper Canada began to grow gradually. Many of these settlers were Europeanimmigrants (mainly English and Scottish) 14 which had recently arrived in United States, whilemany others were Americans. Several of these settlers came to Upper Canada in groups and to theirown fate. Other specialized companies brought so many. These companies were owners of farms in

the colony, and these settlers were brought as laborers. Some of the wealthier American colonistscame to Upper Canada by land. There was even the case of a village in Pennsylvania, whosepopulation migrated completely to Upper Canada, settling in what is now the city of Waterloo.15

In 1812, the war of 1812 began. The United States of America invaded Upper Canada, and took andburned the capital, York.[5] in 1814, British troops, along with the Canadian militia, expelled

Americans from the colony. The war ended in 1815, in status quo. The population of Upper Canada

and lower Canada began developing anti-Americanism, such as a sense antidemocratic (UnitedStates, at that time, was the only world power that had adopted democracy as a form ofGovernment). This anti-democratic sentiment had a great weight in 1837, when took place theUpper Canada rebellion.[16] during the 1830's, the population of lower Canada began to feeluncomfortable by the immense power that the British had in the region - the British chose theLieutenant Governor of the colony, and this had great power in the region. The rebellion was led byWilliam Lyon Mackenzie. This rebellion called for greater powers for the colonial Government, although not gained popularity among the local population, for the monarchy to be seen as "anattack of democracy". This rebellion was quickly reduced, not by British troops, but by a Canadianmilitia. Mackenzie fled to the United States, while other leaders of the rebellion were executed.
