    Letter from Dr. Sachiko kuno

Establishing places for talented people to gather together, inspiring one another to think, create and feel supported, is at the heart of S&R Foundation’s mission. In that sense, 2013 was an exceptionally exciting year. I am delighted to share two of Washington’s most significant historic properties with everyone in the Greater Washington community, and just one short year after moving S&R Foundation’s headquarters to Evermay Estate, our impact has grown exponentially. As our original vision for S&R continues to strengthen and develop, 2014 brings us closer to fulfillment of our mission than ever before.

S&R Foundation balances a healthy respect for history and tradition with forward looking and innovative approaches. In that vein, we began 2013 with the decision to use Halcyon House as the headquarters of a cutting edge incubator dedicated to social enterprise. The Halcyon Incubator exemplifies S&R Foundation’s commitment to both tradition and innovation, as well as our dedication to strengthening Washington D.C. and the world by empowering individuals who can change it for the better. We were honored and excited in 2013 to share S&R Foundation’s work with so many more partners. The increased commitments from longtime supporters, as well as support from many new stakeholders, including an honorary board, circle members, committee members and donors has been so humbling. All of the wonderful new projects started in 2013 would not have been possible without the support of our longtime friends and many special new friends and partners.

Indeed, 2013 was a pivotal year for future growth. As 2014 progresses, S&R Foundation’s future is bright, and our commitment to cultivating talent and nurturing the leaders of the future is stronger than ever.

    Warm regards,

Dr. Sachiko KunoCo-Founder, President & CEO

“ It’s been tremendously exciting to watch the S&R vision become a reality through the concerts, speakers’ programs, social initiatives and other activities S&R Foundation supports, and we’re all looking forward to continued growth and success.”

    — Dr. Sachiko Kuno

    introDuction

Established in 2000 by Dr. Sachiko Kuno and Dr. Ryuji Ueno, S&R Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.

In the beginning, S&R Foundation’s mission was grounded in its support of talented artists and scientists involved in work for charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes. Over the past 13 years, S&R’s mission to support talented individuals has expanded to encompass broad support of individuals with great potential and high aspirations in the arts, sciences and social entrepreneurship, with a special emphasis on furthering international cultural collaboration and ensuing social benefits.

In support of its goals, S&R sponsors annual award programs, hosts concerts and events, and works with its partners to encourage social, scientific and artistic innovation, and to promote cultural and personal development. By supporting individuals and enabling their growth and success within various communities, S&R Foundation nurtures their desires, in turn, to enrich society by sharing the fruits of their hard work and dedication.

Throughout 2013, S&R Foundation continued its commitment to existing programs, including the Washington Award, the Ryuji Ueno Award, the Global Leadership Program, and the Overtures Artist Concert Series. Additionally, the calendar was filled with new programs and events such as the first Artist-in-Residence and the inaugural event of the Illuminate Speaker Series. These programs draw together disparate groups concerned with a wide variety of issues – cultural, economic, research and change processes – enabling them to benefit from small, happy surprises, learn from shared experiences and profit from a sense of community.

S&R Foundation established the Ryuji Ueno Award for Ion Channels or Barrier Function Research (commonly known as the “Ueno Award”) in partnership with the American Physiological Society (APS) in 2002. The Ueno Award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in ion channels or epithelial barrier function.

In 2013, S&R Foundation renewed its collaboration with APS to present the Ueno Award, with a variation in focus. Until 2020, the award will be presented to an early career investigator demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in wound healing, tissue remodeling, and/or organ regeneration.

Past winners have cited the importance the award has had on their careers and contributions to medical advancement. According to 2009 award winner My Helms, Ph.D., of Emory University, “Dr. Ueno encouraged me to do ‘something new,’ and with this award I was able to explore the use of pre-clinical X-ray imaging as an effective way to measure alveolar fluid clearance. My research was featured in several publications – including a peer reviewed article in American Journal of Physiology – “Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology.”

The Ueno Award recipient for 2013 is Dr. Oleh Pochynyuk, a tenure-track assistant professor at the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and a member of the American Physiological Society and American Society of Nephrology. The research in his laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms governing water-electrolyte transport in the distal part of renal nephron.

“ I believe the award and recognition stemming from it were instrumental in my scholarly contributions to my discipline for tenure.”

The International Institute of Global Resilience (IIGR), founded in 2012, is a think tank dedicated to improving and enhancing the readiness and professionalism of the emergency management community worldwide through training, education, consulting and research.

Dr. Maki Fukami, president of IIGR, is the only organization management scientist who has studied Emergency Management in Japan. She has undertaken extensive fieldwork in Fire and Coast Guard for more than ten years and is currently the Japanese representative at the International Association of Emergency Managers.

In 2013, IIGR, in partnership with the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), presented a two-day online lecture series entitled “Global Resilience from Japan,” which was simultaneously broadcast in Japan. IIGR also supported S&R Foundation’s Global Leadership Program for Japanese students from Kyoto University, Keio University, and Tokyo University, in addition to IIGR’s own Kumamoto University program. The program included a lecture by Leo Bosner, formerly of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, on national-level emergency management, and a lecture by Kathleen Henning of the IAEM, on the Incident Command System.

miLLenniaL trainS projectDuring 2013, S&R Foundation forged a special relationship with the Millennial Trains Project (MTP). This unique program began its first transcontinental train journey in August 2013, running from San Francisco, CA to Washington, D.C. with the support of numerous partners, including S&R Foundation. Through ten days of shared discovery, individual exploration and imaginative discourse across seven U.S. cities, MTP and its inaugural class of pioneering participants have established train journeys as powerful engines of progress for young people who aspire to shape the future.

Combining the democratic power of crowd-funding, exposure to diverse landscapes and communities, and the guidance of distinguished mentors, MTP participants have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of challenges with the resources and support necessary to advance their own projects on a national scale. In the coming year, MTP will continue to lead transcontinental train journeys for creative and inspired Millennials from across the globe. The success of the MTP program propelled S&R Foundation to establish the Halcyon Incubator, which will launch in 2014 with the goal of cultivating other programs with social impact.
