A strong second half performance ral l ied the

Flemington Pioneers on Saturday, October 1 2th at

Pioneer Field, but it wasn't enough to get by the

undefeated Riegel Ridge Rams. The final score:

Pioneers 1 3, Rams 37.

The Rams were able to score five touchdowns

but going into the fourth quarter that streak ended. In

the fourth, the Pioneers defense led by #30 Daniel

Johnson kept the Rams from continuing their scoring

onslaught. Johnson had 5 tackles and an interception, which he returned 34 yards. This

interception led to the Pioneers 1 st of 2 touchdowns. Other defensive standouts were #11

Daniel Furmato, who had 2 tackles which resulted in 2 forced fumbles and #53 Kareem Salam

who sacked the Rams quarterback forcing them to punt.

The Pioneers offense led by #1 5 Justin Torres was able to drive deep into the

Rams territory in the first several plays of the game. With just inches to go for a touchdown,

the Pioneers turned the ball over on downs, which started the Rams scoring drive. I t wasn't

unti l late in the third quarter when the Pioneers started to drive again. Two of these late game

drives resulted in touchdowns. Torres went 4-9 for the day, throwing for 83 yards and a

touchdown. #11 Daniel Furmato had 83

yards receiving and a touchdown. He also

led the team with 98 rushing yards. #21 DJ

Stevenson scored the other Pioneers

touchdown on a 2 yard goal l ine rush late

into the third quarter.

On special teams, #3 Anthony Darrow,

showed his punting skil ls by total ing 1 77

yards on only 5 punts, the longest punt

being 43 yards. #24 Joey Whalen caught a pass from Justin Torres converting an extra point

for the Pioneers.

Their next game is at home vs Pohatcong on 1 0/1 9.

FMF Magazine - Covering Central Hunterdon’s Premier Youth Football and Cheer Program

In Skylands JV action this weekend, The FMF Jr Red Devils defeated the Ridge Jr. Devils by

a score of 29-0. Coming off a tough loss last week, the fired up Red Devils were too much for

the Jr. Devils to handle as both the offense and defense dominated throughout the game.

Opening the 1 st quarter, the Red Devils kicked off to the Ridge 40. But the defensive l ine of

Alex Sias, Charl ie LaGullo, Luke Bakerian, Kurt Rainey and Nick McClel lan stopped multiple

runs and forced a punt. JRD took over at their own 36. With starting running back James

Fastenau out with an injury, Jack Aimone, Brian Bielecki and Rowan Quintero provided a

strong, balanced running game. After a JRD punt to the Ridge 40, the defense once again

took charge. Ridge tried to attack through the air, but the secondary of Justus Neumeister,

Griffen Cole, Quintero, along with l inebackers, Thomas Krause, Marco Gonzales, Bielecki

and Aimone provided tight coverage on each attempt. On 3rd and long, Aimone picked off a

Ridge pass at the 35 and ran it back to the 5. On 1 st down, QB Brad Totten handed off to

McClel lan who burst through the l ine for the score. Chris Schwoerer kicked the extra point

and the score was 8-0. After Ridge again went 3 and out, a punt to the Ridge 39 set up the

Red Devils next score. Bielecki ran to the 27 and Aimone carried to the 9 just before the

quarter ended.

On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Aimone ran wide left from the 9 and in for the score. The

extra point kick was good and the score stood at 1 6-0. Throughout the rest of the quarter, the

defense, with added help from Jon Mark Whitlow, Sean Stanaway and Schwoerer, held

Ridge to mostly short yard gains, forcing a punt and turnover on downs. The offense, led by

solid blocking from Sal Brito, Dan Appel, Sias, McClel lan, Rainey, LaGullo and Krause

opened holes for Aimone, Totten, Quintero and Bielecki to maintain the Red Devils trademark

ball control offense. The score at the end of the half was 1 6-0.

The 2nd half opened with JRD receiving the kickoff at their own 35. Continuing their

dominance in control l ing the ball , the Red Devils, through a combination of runs by Aimone,

Bielecki, Quintero and a key 1 4 yd pass to McClel lan, drove 65 yards in 8 minutes, capped

off by a 1 yd score by Bielecki. Aimone ran the extra point in and the Red Devils increased

their lead to 23-0. The fourth quarter saw Ridge mount a short drive, but were forced to

turnover on downs at their own 45. JRD also mounted a short drive, but came up short and

punted to the Ridge 20. Again, the tough Red Devils defense was too strong for Ridge to

mount a drive. With the addition of Bruce Washington, Brandon Stangle and Justin Fusco on

defense, JRD stopped the Ridge drive forcing a punt to their own 36. On 2nd down, Totten

completed a 36 yd scoring strike to Schwoerer. The extra point was no good and the score

was 29-0. Ridge got the ball back one more time, but could not drive against the Red Devils

defense.

The final score was 29-0. The Red Devils improved their record to 5-1 . Next week, the Red

Devils face their toughest opponent yet this season, the Phil l ipsburg Liners at Phil l ipsburg

HS.

GRIDIRON RECAP

The Pioneer flag team won their second game of the season on Saturday, defeating the

Riegel Ridge Rams 3-1 . RJ Hart del ivered the game's first score, racing 50 yards down the right

sidel ine to give the Pioneers a 1 -0 lead early in the first half. Strong play on defense kept the

score at 1 -0, unti l Ryan Coury broke free, down the right sidel ine for a 50 yard touchdown, as the

Pioneers increased the lead to 2-0. The Pioneers third touchdown of the day came from Owen

Blum, as he took the handoff from the 1 0 yard l ine and sped past the Ram defenders into the end

zone. The Rams answered with a touchdown of their own to cut the lead to 3-1 , but the Pioneers

held on from there to secure the victory.

The Pioneers had many contributors on the day, featuring some nice running plays from

Kenny Burk, Demetrius Preston, Nick Verel l i and Juelz Davis along with strong defensive

performances from Jacob Saus, Justin Swandrak, Danny Ferguson, Jack Brunetti and Connor

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSONOur Number One Fan

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of theteam. At the end of every summer, l ike the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in footbal l

season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn airand the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he nevermissed a practice in al l of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and wil l beforever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our family

by naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer

Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a greatteammate and a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As much ashe loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. I t was this love that took Joey from usfar too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his l ife in 2000, the organization retired his number55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the corner of the

endzone for every home game so that they wil l always be part of our family.
