PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT I am delighted to announce that the new Deputy Principal to replace Heather Burgess is Michael Hallett. Michael is currently at Hauraki Plains College and will be joining us for the

beginning of 2019. NCEA EXAMs are rapidly approaching with most students starting their external exams towards the end of next week. To help students stay focussed, only those students who can prove to us that they are on track to achieve NCEA will get the privilege to go on study leave. Special congratulations to Amaru Donaldson who received the Supreme Award. A similar evening is on tonight to recognize the achievement of our Elite Sports people. To all those students not returning to Waihi College next year I hope that your journey through life is rewarding and positively exciting. COLLEGE NEWS

Cultural Awards Evening We had our Cultural Awards night last Thursday and are pleased to say the night was a ton of fun with lots of talent on display. This year we had amazing performances from our Kapa Haka group, Te Ara Poutama, our drama and music students, a rocking performance from Mr Bob Paton and a sensational media display stage from our media kids and their wonderful teacher Ms Pippa Russell. We had some of our art students boards on display, our textile student’s entries into Pinn’d dotted around on mannequins and the most delicious food served up by our culinary kids. It was a colourful, creative and culinary delight of a night. If you didn’t make it this year, make sure you join us next year. Our top awards went to Amaru Donaldson who took out the Supreme Cultural Award along with the Maori Performer of the Year award. James Hessey who took home Most Outstanding Performer in Music and Musician of the Year and Avalon McNair who won Most Outstanding Performer in Drama and Dramatic Performer of the Year. Very well deserved!!! Our other students who shone just as brightly are: Dakota Sinclair – Most Outstanding in Media Design Teagan McGee and Lydia Rogers – Acts of Service in the Arts Sherina Hodge and Nevada Taikato – Principals Certificates for Art

Shawna Perrett-Dodd – Most Improved Performer in Music Nyah Frew – Most Outstanding Contribution to Music Composition Award – Winnie Choi

Most Outstanding Performer in Drama – Nikita McAlister Most Improved Performer in Drama – Leah Butterworth Top Tech – Jackson Pool Wendy Shave

    Building and Construction

Level 2 and 3 students have been busy with their major project for the year, completing four large garden sheds. Big thanks to Goldpine Waihi for their ongoing support. Level 1 students have recently completed their concreting and

paving standards by landscaping an area behind the automotive block. Thanks to Carters Contractors and Beach Contractors. Peter Roy

Debating Finals The Year Nine and Ten debate finals were held in week one and

we were treated to some very ingenious arguments. Year Ten

dealt with the thorny issues of Zoos and Euthenasia, and some excellent points were raised by all four teams. In the end, the smallest team prevailed, and Sarah Keall and Mystique McKellar took the trophy with 458 points. The highest scoring speaker was Maddison Scott, beating second place Blake Galey by only one point.

The Year Nine competition ended in a tie at 418 points, the first tie we have ever had. A tiebreaker final was arranged, and the eventual victors in a debate about animal testing were Erika Senado, Sean Choi, Cassie Magyar and Matt Barakat from 9MW. Year nine’s highest scoring speaker was Manaaia Nathan, her score was equal to the winning score for Year Ten and 11 points clear of the rest of Year Nine - so a particularly strong performance. The top debaters from Year Nine and Ten have an inter-school competition against Te Aroha College on the 9

    th

    of November.

Blood Donors Last term our senior students had the opportunity to donate blood to

the Blood Bank. Thanks to all of you who did this.

A big thanks to Sport Waikato, the THIS IS ME girls and all the girls who came along and participated. Can’t wait for the 2019 events.
