Nokia Research Centre Collaboration

UTS Partnership Grant

Big Data Workshop

MOU with Northeastern University, China

Associate Professor Jian Zhang has received funding from Nokia Research Centre, Finland to support collaborative research on 3D Mobile applications. This research will leverage Jian’s many years of research into image/video processing, computer vision and 3D video processing technology. The collaboration research will support the Nokia research strategy in relation to 3D mobile applications.

In September 2012, Professor Longbing Cao and his team were awarded seed funding under the UTS Partnership Grant Scheme.

The partnership with Qantas Airways Limited will look at data-driven marketing analytics in customer relationship management, resulting in the development of innovative algorithms and models for identifying the effective communication patterns of individual customer services.

The UTS project team is cross disciplinary with Prof. Longbing Cao, A/Prof. Wei-Chang Yeh, and Dr Zhigang Zheng from the Advanced Analytics Institute, and Prof. Joffre Swait from CenSoC.

On 15 November 2012, the AAI held a Big Data Workshop at UTS. This one day inaugural UTS short course attracted much interest and more than eighty people registered and attended the event. The workshop program featured a range of speakers from academia and industry including Professor Longbing Cao, Dr Suresh Sood and A/Prof. Jian Zhang (AAI:UTS); Mr David Pracy and Mr Ross Farrelly from TERADATA; Dr Gary Issar, Senior Director, Strategic Research and Analysis – Debt, Australian Taxation Office; and Mr Chami Akmeemana, Managing Director, Huntel Global. Areas covered during the workshop included global trends in big data and careers, social media analytics, risk analytics, government and big data, collection analytics, and multimedia analytics.

On Friday, 26 October 2012, a Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Research Collaboration between the University of Technology and Northeastern University (NEU) was signed. NEU, located in the city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, is one of China’s high level universities designated for the state key construction of the “211 Project” and “985 Project”.

The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to provide a framework for UTS and NEU to enter into a research collaboration in order to contribute staff, resources and facilities to joint research projects across a range of disciplines of mutual interest, and to investigate and consider the desirability of establishing a Joint Research Centre for Data Science and Industry.

AAI Seminar SeriesInterdisciplinary Workshop

The AAI Seminar series is attracting a strong degree of interest from internal and external stakeholders. A summary of some recent presentations is provided below.

On Friday, 28 September 2012, the AAI held a workshop entitled “The Nexus Between Analytics and Social Science: An Interdisciplinary ‘Ideas’ Workshop.

The workshop attended by researchers and thinkers from various fields (e.g. computing, analytics, statistics, data mining, psychology, and social science), sought to explore ways in which the domain expertise of psychologists, and other social scientists, might synergistically work to drive innovation in terms of new data collection and analytic approaches.

Facilitated by Dr Warwick Graco (Australian Taxation Office) and Emeritus Professor Beryl Hesketh (UWS) with assistance from Professors Longbing Cao (UTS), Judy Kay (University of Sydney) and Simeon Simoff (UWS), the workshop generated fervent, inspired discussion and it is hoped that the ideas generated will stimulate new research in both general fields and spawn future collaborations.

Machine Learning Methods for Multimodal Information Access

Professor Stephane Marchand-Maillet from the Viper group on Information Retrieval and Machine Learning,University of Geneva, Switzerland, gave a highly accessible presentation on recent progress in building strategies for online-access to

multimodal information. He closed his presentation with a look at mining strategies for long-term data augmentation, based on content data and usage, in view of embedding more semantics in the information access.

The Generalised Autocovariance Function

The generalised autocovariance function nests the inverse and the traditional covariance functions. Professor Tommaso Proietti from the University of Sydney’s Department of Business Statistics gave an informative overview of its

capabilities at the AAI Seminar series on 5 October 2012.

The Teradata Aster Platform

On 12 October, 2012, Mr Ross Farrelly, Chief Data Scientist, Teradata Australia and New Zealand, gave a presentation on the Teradata Aster solution to analysing increasingly large volumes of organisational data. Mr Farrelly highlighted the

advantages of the Teradata Aster platform which include scalability, database execution and adaptability without compromising performance.

ACM Multimedia Conference

Invited Speech

A/Prof. Jian Zhang recently visited Shanghai University (SHU) and attended the 2012 ACM Multimedia Conference where he presented a paper on Vision, Learning and Applications. During his visit, Jian held discussions with the SHU School of Communication and Information Engineering which focused on future research collaboration opportunities and establishing a dual-doctoral program.

On 28 November 2012, A/Prof. Jian Zhang gave an invited speech to the Australian Workshop on Video/Image Coding, Processing, and Understanding at Monash University in Melbourne.

State University of New York at Buffalo

A/Prof. Jian Zhang recently visited Prof. Chang Wen Chen, State University of New York at Buffalo, the Chair of Steering Committee of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) in Buffalo (10 Dec. 2012). Prof. Chen has made his excellent comments that Jian and Qiang Wu (School of C&C) for hosting the ICME 2012 in Melbourne. Jian and Prof. Chen have discussed future possible ICME events in Australia, especially in UTS for hosting ICME seasonal school in Multimedia and New Media Analytics.

The Future of Advanced Analytics

Dr Dan Steinberg is CEO and founder of Salford Systems, the developer of pioneering and highly influential data mining technology. His presentation at the AAI on 21 September 2012 examined recent developments in the field of analytics and explored

strategies for handling large data sets on single but power servers. These servers are now extremely economical being cheaper to buy than many small cars.
