Issue Four June 2015 On Friday 20th March 2015, at approximately 9:10 am, all of the children and staff of Aycliffe Village Primary School went onto the yard to look at the solar eclipse. A few parents, who had bought their own glasses, brought them to wear as the school had provided a pair of glasses for each pupil and staff. A parent of a child in Year 4 said, “Look, you can see it in the window,” and they were right, you could see the eclipse in the window! So the parents that did not have glasses could look at the window to see what was happening in the sky to avoid damage to their eyes. A solar eclipse is where the moon crosses in front of the sun and blocks the light and makes a shadow on parts of the earth, so it goes dark and cold. The reason this does not happen every day is because the moon and the sun turn on their axis. When the solar eclipse was in progress the children noticed that it was getting colder than it had been earlier. The pupils in Class 7 asked to go and get their coats on! The reason it was getting colder was because we get heat from the sun, so if that is being blocked then we get less heat from the sun. The children also noticed that it was getting darker and that is because we get light from the sun and it was being blocked and there was only a little bit of light. The solar eclipse does not only affect humans, it also affects animals. For example, the lack of light made the birds think it was time to go to sleep and start chirping to tell everyone to go to sleep. We know this because when the children were outside they could hear all the birds chirping to each other and we saw them return to the trees. To sum up the whole day, you could say that all the children and adults enjoyed themselves because it is a special opportunity to see a solar smile. We think that the next time this happens everyone that was there will remember this day! Solar Smile Science By Laura McKenna and Owen Black

A few parents, who had bought their own glasses, brought them to wear as the school had provided a pair of glasses for each pupil and staff. AthleticsOn Wednesday 22nd April, Year 5 and 6 pupils did an activity session with a man called Craig from the School Sports Partnership. At the beginning of the session, Craid said something called ABC’s. It stands for Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed.

For the warm up he got the children to run around a square, made by little rubber strips

on the floor, a couple of times. After that, they played a game where again, they had to run around the square and if he shouted ‘Number 1,’ then they had ot swipe their left hand on the floor and if he shouted ‘Number 2,’ then they would do it with their right hand. Then he gave it up to Elle, a student in Year 6 to choose number 3. She chose when he shouted number 3 they had to do 5 jumping jacks.

They took turns in being the leader to shout the number. Craig kept talking to the children about

different sport events. He then let the children choose their own partners and chose who was a 1 and who was a 2. He sent the number 1s to get two balls. The number 1’s held a ball in each hand at an angle then the number 2s stood opposite them. They dropped one ball to see wether the 2’s could get the ball to test their reflexes. After a few goes, they swapped to the other person got a go.

The Fun RunOn Friday 27th April 2015, Year 2,3,4 and 5 pupils went to the Oak Leaf Leisure Centre to represent our school in a Fun Run.

They left school at 9.30 am and came back at 11.00 am. There were 45 pupils who took part. Everyone ran together. Our school was ranked 12th and Ruby Watson came 12th in the whole race. Logan Hunter did really well for us too!

It was a great event and we were proud to take part. It was also nice to see other schools there too!

Year 6. Firstly, the children went into the little pool. They don’t normally have different teachers, but that day they did because there were some people learing how to teach people; it was their Level 1 coaching course.

Then some people went into the big pool, and some stayed in the little pool. It really didn’t matter because they were going to swap over anyway!

These are some of the things that they did in the little pool

- star jumps across the pool, swim across the pool holding a ball, kicking a ball, and they had to balance a cup of water on their head.

Secondly, after the games, they had to do front stroke from one side to the other. Then they had to do it on their back. After that, they had to do butterfly stroke.

After they did that for 20 mintutes, they went up into groups of 3 and got a new instructor.

Abstract ArtBy Abigail Cairns

This issue we have decided to look at a piece of artwork by Class 2. They did some brilliant abstract art at Greenfield Community College. They looked at all the pictures, chose their favourte one, sketched it and wrote about it.

Just for the people who don’t know what abstract art is - it can be a painting or sculpture that does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world, even in an extremely distorted or exaggerated way. Therefore, the subject of the work is based on what you see! Colour, shapes, brushstrokes, size and scale.

The process began in 1911 with such works as a picture with a circle by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. He believed that colours provoked emotions.

We have been successful in applying for funding to help with the purchase of a great range of equipment for the school playground.

The children love it and due to popular demand, we have a rota in place so each year group have a dedicated playtime to use it whilst supervised.

We don’t want anyone to get hurt so please make sure it’s not used without a teacher present.
