Reserves having been put aside for further science lab refurbishments (six more Science Labs to go)

Reserves having been put aside for the furniture and build-in of the new uniform shop

Financial support for students attending competitions, both sporting and academic

The running of the Year 7 Parent information night in February

The organisation and running of the two working bees

The organisation and running of the Year 12 interview skills workshop

The running of the Uniform Shop, which mainly relies on parent volunteers to continue providing quality uniforms with reasonable prices

The Year 12 Graduation Morning Tea, which was supplied and served by the P&C

Support of the Year 12 English Study Day during the Term 3 holidays, with morning tea and lunch supplied

The running of the P&C information booth that explained P&C roles and activities to new parents on Orientation Day for all incoming students

The organisation and running of the hugely successful Multicultural Food Fair.

Please continue to support the P&C by paying the P&C levy to enable us to keep supporting the school and help our students.

The P&C would like to sincerely thank all parent volunteers who contributed their time to the events listed above. We would like to wish all school staff, students and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as well as peaceful and restful holidays.

Young Justice Program – Law Society

In Week 9 of Term 4, 5 students from Year 11 (Tina Rota, Rucha Thosar, Tahia Mujtaba, Bob Chen and Bridgette Lee) and 4 students from Year 10 (Sara Wardak, Vahin Ravi, Diya Goswami and Gauri Sharma) took part in the Young Justice Program run by the Young Lawyers division of the Law Society.

Students heard a keynote in the Supreme Court from Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, Governor of New South Wales, who asked for their viewpoints about current legal issues. They undertook workshops in sentencing/legal literacy in the Law Society building and heard from a panel of lawyers with diverse backgrounds about legal careers.

They were given a case scenario involving sentencing using the skills they had learnt in the morning session, to compete with the other school (Sydney Boys High School) in roles as prosecution and defence in the final session of the day. They received support for unpacking the issues in the case scenario from a lawyer who had previously worked as a prosecutor and presented before a judge (The Hon. Justice Terry Buddin SC).

Congratulations to Bob and Sara for stepping up to speak in front of Justice Buddin! Congratulations to all students who were awarded best team by the Justice (with a Year 10 student from Sydney Boys being awarded best speaker). I was very impressed by your professionalism, answers to questions asked and the teamwork and participation which resulted in a well deserved recognition! Ms Hardy

Drama Year 9 Drama have been busily finishing off their Australian Drama performances culminating with two groups selected for the Creative and Performing Arts evening. Meenal Janjua and Shaan Goradia performed a scene from Debra Oswald's play “Dags”, and Aniketh Chennapragada, Jeremiah Jose and Timothy Pudin performed a group devised Australian scene. Both comical performances were an excellent representation of the skills and confidence that year 9 have acquired in their first year of Drama-well done to those performers we are very proud of you! Students also became graphic artists and designed posters to promote their performances as featured in the photos provided. Our Learning Intention for our next unit that carries into 2020 is to produce a Shakespeare performance. Students will gain knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays and their universal qualities whilst drawing on their English studies of Shakespeare from Years 7-9. At the end of Term 1 next year some students will be selected to perform their piece at the Shakespeare Carnival which allows students a performance opportunity in dance, music composition, movement, smart phone film, ensemble performance or duologue performance. This Carnival is open to all students from years 7-12; we are looking forward to another fantastic opportunity to showcase the talented students of Baulkham Hills High School.

Yr10 Drama students have been working on developing their physical theatre skills using techniques from the Frantic Assembly to build their work. Students started their devising process with a description and actions of another person in the class, they then modified their own movements, mirrored each other, included synchronisation and added props to create this engaging performance that was much more powerful than the simple movements they started with.

Open Boys Cricket Grand Final Just wanted to share the good news that we have beaten Model Farms High School in the Open Boys Cricket Grade Final. The boys played extremely well and it was an absolute thrashing, and we have now beaten them in the Grade Grand Final two years in a row. We lost the toss, batted first and scored 3/87 in 10 overs (Aathan from Year 9 playing well opening batting) while they struggled against our pace attack consisting of Shaan Goradia, Adithya Ranganath, and Asan C and only managed to score 7/57 in 10 overs. Our fielding was impeccable as well and overall the boys played really well to get a well deserved victory and unbeaten right through the season. The boys should be very proud of their efforts. Congratulations! Mr Alex Cricket Coach

BHHSACU AFX 2019 For 5 days, the Baulkham Hills High School Cadet Unit went on their annual field exercise, codenamed “Endgame” to Cataract Scout Park from the 15th to 19th of November. The cadets were split into two main platoons; Alpha and Bravo, which competed against each other by completing various tasks to see which platoon could get the most points by the end of the camp whilst the seniors were put in Charlie or “Thanos” Platoon to try and sabotage the other two platoons. Some unique activities that take place at the camp include codebreaking, navigation exercises, hootchie (a type of tent) building and intense adaptations of capture the flag. These activities occur on the first 3 days of the camp and challenge the cadets in all departments such as their team work, knowledge and skill. Furthermore, it enables them to truly demonstrate and ‘flex’ all that they have learnt throughout the year in cadets. Activities can range from individual competitions to entire platoons against each other. A personal favourite activity was the navigational relay in which the cadets had to try navigate in their sections around the campsite. I must admit, it was hilarious to watch the sections get the wrong coordinates or have their compasses flipped and wander through the opposite side of the campsite. An example of one of the platoon challenges was the “Biggest Hootchie Competition” between Alpha and Bravo which was one of the most hectic team building exercises in which the cadets banded together to try construct a larger hootchie than the opposing platoon. Watching the cadets frantically dash around in order to finish within the very constrictive time limit and hearing their never-ending but enthusiastic shouts proved that they truly enjoyed the activity. The capture the flag scenarios consisted of an attacking party who would try to reach the opposing “flag” whilst the defending sections hid in the foliage as a surprise party, tasked with intercepting the attacking parties. One extraordinary section impressed everyone by sneaking past all of the opposing defending sections with mind-blowing tactics concocted by themselves and capturing the flag in record time! There was never a boring moment even when the activities finished and the spontaneous mini challenges were there to make sure of it. Brightly-coloured canisters were hidden around the campsite, giving the cadets an opportunity to turn the entire game around- but only if they were lucky enough to find them. Be warned: they may be bright but the seniors spared no mercy. Cadets were determined to find them and would spend at least an hour looking which made it all the more rewarding when found. The fourth day was a fun day for cadets to bond with their friends and NCOs, filled with third party camp activities like the flying fox, abseiling and the new addition of caving which many cadets found interesting. In past annuals, mud run, archery and kayaking were also available.

The nights were no less lively than the day. Most nights would have activities organised such as a cadet favourite: lantern stalk where one person held a glow stick in a large field whilst the entire cadet cohort would race to touch it first. Sounds easy but the cadets must remain undetected and dead silent. But let us not forget the memories we made in the middle of the night while on picquet. Every night, as the other cadets slept, some nominated themselves to be on picquet, essentially a group of sentries staying up for an hour each, who would keep watch in case Charlie platoon tried to steal the hard-earned canisters. Moreover, every platoon was granted the opportunity to sleep in tents or cabins. When the final day arrived, the cadets still upheld bright faces, despite being thoroughly worn out from their exhilarating week which proved the success of AFX 2019.

BHHSACU DINING IN NIGHT On Friday 13th December, the BHHSACU held its annual Dining In Night. This is a formal occasion where the cadet unit celebrates a year of achievements and recognises the accomplishments of several cadets. It is also the time when recruits advance to cadets. It was a great night, with great food, music and dancing.

On behalf of the school, I would like to thank CPT (AAC) Charlton and the ACS and every cadet for your support and active participation in the BHHSACU. Thank you also to Mr N Vasrem who has been the Cadet Liaison Officer for many years, who officially steps down from the role this year. He has been a valuable link between the school and the Cadet Unit and will be missed.
